We are going to improve the EVE forums and give the user experience on the forums a nice boost by making the forums responsive with as little resizing, panning, and scrolling on as many devices as possible.
While the web team already cleaned up the forum back-end code during the past months, it is now time to make more visible changes. In this first of two phases we will remove the EVE Gate header from the forums and move most links there to a nice menu in the navigation bar.
Please read about all the changes, bugfixes and details in CCP raRaRa's latest dev blog Upcoming Forum changes - Phase 1 of 2. CCP Phantom - Senior Community Representative - Volunteer Manager |

I noticed RSS feeds mentioned so I'd like to grumble about something.
If you take for example the devpost rss feed here https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=rsstopic&pg=search&devbadge=1&gmbadge=1
If you add this to any RSS reader (I've really tried a free one for Chrome) and click the the items as they are listed you will always be taken to the top post of the thread instead of the post that the feed item is about.
This is because the link-tag points to the thread in general and not to the right post. The correct link is there in the content, but the reader I'm using doesn't even show the content so my only option is to click something that takes me to the wrong place.
Please please please take the time to fix this. |

Please please please bring back image signatures like we had in the old forums. I think it really enhances the community in that it lets people inject a little style. We are the content, are we not? As for responsive considerations, well that's an easy fix, isn't it?
@media screen and (max-width: 500px) { {div.sig-image {display:none;} }
Really easy. Bring back forum sigs!!!
For the dissenter below, it would be nothing to place a control in the forums so people could disable all image sigs in their own view. We can accommodate everyone here. Conversely, you could "opt-in" to see people's forum sigs. I am a meat popsicle.-á |

- Adding links to GM, ISD and CSM badges bringing you to the next relevant post
- The forum login should now correctly redirect users to the page/topic they were viewing
These are the two most useful forum features in years. I have been asking for that first once since the very first dev blog. I don't care what the peanut gallery is saying in threadnaughts, i want to see what the "important" people who can actually answer questions and make changes are saying.
Thank you. Thank you. THANK YOU. thank you. ThAnK yOu. tHaNk YoU. and so on, and so forth (typed like a tween at times to show you i didn't just copy/paste... i typed every single thank you out)
One question about that though, is there one button that takes you to the next "important" post, or is there a link for each type of "important person"? I'd much rather have 1 button that works for all of them at the same time (so i don't miss a CSM post in between GM posts for example).
And in the spirit of never being satisfied and always wanting more.... would it be possible to have a button (or add in to the button above) that takes you to the next post by a contact of yours? That would make it easier to see if my friends have posted in a thread, or even the people I don't like in game. Shenanigans for EVERYONE!
That second thing, the post-login return to forum page, is such a quality of life (on the forums) fix. Thanks for that too. I can kill you with my brain too. It's genetic.

That feature is nearly useless. First off, it shows every dev/gm post on the entirety of the forums. Second, you have to constantly look for the forum thread that you are interested in. Third, it doesn't generally show you useful information from the post because usually the devs are quoting someone, then answering their question, then quote then answer then quote then answer several times in a row. The few lines the search page shows you are practically useless.
What would be more useful, is to have a button in a thread you currently care about that kicks away all the riff raff and only shows you what you care about. That way you don't have to worry about the whining, the trolling, the "can i have your stuff", the "eve is dying", the "me and my 15 accounts are GONE" posts. I can kill you with my brain too. Cool stuff indeed.
But you should first fix what's broken : - Editing a bio from the website deletes it. - Bold, underline, colored, etc... text is sometimes erased from mails when you read them from EVE Gate. - Corporation forums not showing for all members at all times, and a pain to create. - A search too complicated or too long will just yield an error. - Devs posting only a smiley as an answer will have their message listed as an error, the "Dev posts" search. - and so on... Aside from this my two biggest wishes are 1) notification links to take me to the first unread post, 2) see who a post author is without having to scroll left.
On the mobile (the only way I view forums) I zoom in to the post column and can't then see the far left column with character names and portraits. Glad to see this is on the agenda.
As per previous comments, it'd be nice to get forum sigs back. I know they are a pain to moderate but for noobs they are entertaining and informative - especially if they redirect to guides/blogs etc.
The scripts on forums gold were really useful (while it worked) especially the no-nom feature and being able to jump to the last unread post. Long term I'd like to see the ability to customise our own forum view. The more I look at reddit the more I prefer it all squished up with less wasted space. Some of the functionality eve-search has would be awesome, particularly view thread as one page and thread/ user stats. I'd really prefer to see a longer development phase tbh, there are stacks of improvements that could be made. DON'T BE RIDICULOUS! |

I've never really understood the reasoning behind developing your own custom forum software (or trying to patch up some stone age version of what looks to be... phpbb?) when there are plenty of fully functional forum softwares available. I can't imagine developing and maintaining a custom forum is in any way cheaper or easier than using a pre-existing product. Writing plugins and custom code to hook a forum into EVE Online for crucial functionality is infinitely easier than writing the entire forum yourself to do what you want.

Making the forums look nicer on more devices isn't as critical as making sure that players feel like CCP is always actually reading the posts by players, esp. comments on devblogs. Sure, CCP can't fix or address everything, but players should feel that somone at CCP is reading what they made effort to write.
Typically, players feel that CCP devs only read posts for the first day or so (a week at most) after the devblog went up, and pick/choose a limited number of posts to which to read/respond, completely ignoring the rest. This impression creates bad feelings from players towards CCP, esp. since it is probably not true.
Unfortunately, CCP devs do not post as frequently as required, justifiably arguing that spending all day responding to forum posts means less time doing actual work - design, coding, debugging, whatever. Thus, relying on only the posted replies by CCP devs, as feedback for players to know if their posts are being read, is not sufffcient.
With this in mind, I'd like to suggest adding the following features:
1) Add seperate columns on the topic pages which track the number of "CCP Replies" and "CCP Views" - which, ofc, should only keep track of how many CCP devs have replied to or viewed the topic.
2) Add a tracker to each page of posts within a topic, which indicates the number of "CCP Views" of that specific page. This allows players to know that someone at CCP has read the posts up to page 5 or whatever. It also lets CCP track whether someone *should* make a special effort to read through the posts of the latest pages within a topic, since the tracker shows that no one at CCP has done so yet.
3) Add simple response templates for the CCP devs, with a customized dev-only forum UI, which will allow them to more quicklly indicate that they are indeed reading the topic posts, without needing to actually spend time to write, format and post a full message. For example, to answer posts from players about bugs or test server feedback, there could be a templated "bug/issue reply" button for CCP devs which simply quotes the original player post, and adds "Issue read and acknowledged. We'll fix it. Thanks!". Or for a longer thread, there could be a button that generates a templated post that says "I've read up to post #####. I'll post an update based on your responses soon. Thank you for your feedback - keep it coming!"
Note: Item (3) isn't meant to be abused by CCP devs - ie. used all of the time instead of posting "real" responses. It is only meant to let players know that someone at CCP is actually reading the posts, and hasn't had time to write a "real" response yet. |

Love the overall plan for the changes.
I wish we could get an option to make the background white and the text black.
As well as to set a default size for text on the pages.

I know the black background is tradition, but please give us the option to reverse it. |

There will never be * An [IMG] tag - no pics here * Good karma system - current "likes only" system is pretty false and deceiving - anyone can get any number of likes for his main with his twinks (any alt will make this twice efficient) * Any polls - we'll have to use likes as before * Just a single "reply" button - instead of "post' button for a quick reply AND "reply" button right beside it, which opens a text editor * The annoying warning of leaving eve-forums will not be removed * Lettercount cap removed
Also, when I want to answer a person, I do not want to quote all his quotes, and the quotes that were quoted in those quotes (also, when we remember that this counts against our lettercap - the things are turning really grim). These cascade quotes are bad, and if I clean them manually, there will likely be a broken tag, so the post becomes totally illegible. |

Hmmm...how about sorting results by date and whether its CCP member post?
If the forums continue to be the primary source of EVE documentation, this is essential to effective use of time.
As is its hard to find the MOST Current info on any topic given the 10+ years of forum data (not all online but way too much).
And random user comments (especially off topic comments) can bury relevant data.
---
what would be even more valuable (but possibly impractical to implement) is a historical list of CCP topic authorities to automatically be applied to results.
(e.g. topic Missiles: CCP NewAuthority 6June2014-14:32:32 to current CCP Fozzie 5November2011-00:01:01 to 6June2014-14:32:31 etc
Then when users search for rules on missiles resulting posts could limited to the most authoritative or at least those authorities highlighted over CCP posts where non-authorities on missiles may be commenting primarily on some other rule change and only using missiles in an example and perhaps not 100% correctly.) |

Seems off topic. Though I agree bounties and kill rights are pretty meaningless for players only flying ships in high sec costing less than 20M-50M -- no matter how many Billions in damage they cause.
LOL - but seriously you might as well complain that EVE doesn't treat habitual criminals differently than single or low count rage violators. That penalties do not get more severe with number of illegal pod/ship kills (longer timers or steep cost to buy off security status).

How fixing forum penalty for NEW accounts? This character is about 18 months old. But since I haven't posted much I am restricted by "less than 2 days old".
Actually I am pretty sure I posted to forum for newbie and client help before using this toon. So there is just something broken here.
Why not just use API to pull account age? Or character age if that is not possible.
If needed you could cache that on Logon or forum server for when forums are up but Tranquility and main DB servers are down. Update cached answer at first Forum login if API is up and use cache answer for all checks afterwards. |

While we're at, it, besides the "dislike" and "place bounty" button, it would be pretty awesome to have the "character notes" tab from ingame on the forums, too. So with simple copy/paste you could add any poster's obnoxious posts to the notes and when you meet him ingame, you'd quickly know why this name sounds so awfully familiar and why you felt that uncontrollable urge to blow up his internet spaceship. not sure if trolling/sarcastic, but I assume it is... so i'll respond with...
I do not think we want website developers, which are not the same as game developers, anywhere near the game. The forums are a part of stuff that needs to be fixed. They can't make changes to the game, so they do there job and fix the forums/website. So.. yea.
I find this stuff funny... "why are you wasting time fixing this when you need to fix this ccp!"
its like people think if you say "I work in the art department" or "I work in the web development department" that it measn they can program in whatever language the game is made in, so they should be doing that and if they are not its a waste of time and money.
That's the same thing as saying "Oh, you are a jet mechanic? Can you fix my car?" odds are no, no they can't. or "Oh your are chemical engineer? well I have this electrical issue I need an engineer for, can you fix it?" Again, no, no they can't. There is one issue with signatures that does not seem addressed.
The 120 character limit right now applies to the URL placed within URL tags. For instance, if I use a URL that is 40 characters long, but the link itself displays as "Changes to HACs", this will count as 40 characters, not 15. I could be wrong on this; it might be the tags themselves that count as the extra characters. Either way, that example does count as more than 15 characters.
Please do adjust this so the displayed amount of characters are limited to 120 or whichever limit you decide is correct.
Thanks! Hey guys. |

Greetings guys and gals!
Now I've gone over all the replies in this thread, and compiled a list of feature requests & issues that have been brought up; that will be presented to the rest of the team. Please understand that we may not be able to abide by every request for various reasons, however there have been some that have sparked our interest and have already received some discussion internally.
That having been said, I would like to address a few of the questions that were not directly feature requests or issues.
Megarom wrote:This is because the link-tag points to the thread in general and not to the right post. The correct link is there in the content, but the reader I'm using doesn't even show the content so my only option is to click something that takes me to the wrong place. I agree, the RSS feed should provide links in the same way as the forum view. I.e. when reading the search RSS the main link should be to the relevant post, not the original of the topic.
Moraguth wrote:One question about that though, is there one button that takes you to the next "important" post, or is there a link for each type of "important person"? I'd much rather have 1 button that works for all of them at the same time (so i don't miss a CSM post in between GM posts for example). The badge links will at this time only bring you to the next post by a person with an identical badge in the thread. Links to the first of each badge may however be found at the top of any topic. These are really great changes!
I have a few suggestions for Phase 2/2:
- Ability to upload images as attachments to posts.
- Option to display attached images in-line inside the post.
- Upload an image file to be displayed in your forum signature.
- Colored text.
- Ability for CCP Developers to force certain forum users to write everything in pink.
- Different font sizes.
- Ability to add domains to your personal whitelist of external links that are opened without the interstitial warning.
- Ability to post XML,HTML ( to be clear, essentially replace < and > with < and > ) (This also fixes other issues where people want to use < and > )
- [pre] BBCode for preformatted text.
- [code] BBCode for syntax-highlighted, pre-formatted text.
- Ability to include LaTeX formulas.
- Ability to include small tables with sortable columns.
- Ability to add fittings to your post (paste in plain text fitting format and display a small version of the ingame fitting window in-line).
- Add a karma system that also allows downvotes.
- When the forum decides not to accept your text input for some reason, don't delete everything you wrote and display an error message, allow the user to fix their input instead without having to use the back button.
- Add a light-colored theme.
- There is an issue where the forum just randomly loses all your input when you hit "post".
- Use a different rate-limiting algorithm for forum posts, i run into that limit quite regularly.

We've opened external access to phase one on https://forums.testeveonline.com for testing. Feel free to try it out!
If everything goes as planned, then we'll deploy phase one early next week.
Here's list of new changes that were not included in the dev blog:
- Top bar is now sticky
- Quick search is back on the page, no longer in a drop-down menu
- Back to top arrow is shown on all pages and we've also added "Back to top" link to the sticky top bar
- Time on posts shows how much time has passed since it was posted (2 min ago, one hour ago, 2 days ago, etc) and hovering the mouse over the text will show the timestamp
- Notifications always take you to the relevant post

It might be blocking some stuff it shouldn't be. will this continue to be an issue after launch or just a current bug/issue? It's not an "issue", really. Certain Adblock filters are "too eager" in what they block, and they appear to have issues with certain bits of Javascript making, for example, the Like button work. See CCP Sledgehammer talk about one of these problems.
The problem is not with the forums; it is with the overzealous filters causing the blocking. There are a few ways to fix the "overzealous filtering" problem:
- Pester the authors of the Adblock filters at fault to fix up their filters to not cause so much trouble.
- Locally edit the filters you have so they don't catch stuff (e.g. CCP Sledgehammer's post).
- Disable Adblock for the Eve forums. There aren't ads here anyway.
It was #3 that I recommended in my previous post. I hope this clears some stuff up. ISD LackOfFaith Captain Community Communication Liaisons (CCLs) Interstellar Services Department I do not respond to Eve Mail or anything other than the forums. |

With notifications working correctly no need for a go to last post button in the thread but would be a definite win if added.
Will miss the devblog short cut being in the header. Evelopedia being in the drop down works.
Current version of the sticky header needs more color.
Drop down needs a Dev Developers site access point.
Can we get the thread title first with more text showing in notifications, only last poster is needed or a number of people that has posted lately.
And can we follow individual posters if they post again.

I agree, it would be nice to have "Go to last post" button, we'll think about some neat way to implement it in phase two. Not sure what to do with shortcuts, EVE Universe is already cluttered with many links. I expect most people to bookmark their favorite sites :) But we'll see what we can do. Links in the header drop-down menu are now orange, which adds a bit more color variation to the header.

On another note, we've deployed a few more changes to forums.testeveonline.com
- Enabled code BBCode
- Top sticky nav is more mobile friendly
- Removed "Back to top" link in top sticky nav, instead the back to top arrow is now mobile friendly.
- New background
- New EVE Forum logo
- Links in header drop-down menu are now orange
We're thinking about deploying phase one tomorrow if everything goes as planned!

This is how I view the forums. Double-tap the text column and you can't see the portraits any more. So while you can see who authored #103 because of the edit you cannot see who authored #104 without scrolling left to view the portraits. Which is an enormous pain.
Some text of who the author is just where the "Edited by" text is would be great.

Ok, then please select a proper looking background. The current BG is horrible, not even complaining on high standards. Let the Art team decide what background to chose, not coders. Coders have no taste.
--
How can I click on the user who liked me, the post which he liked and the topic the liked post is in in the new notification drop-down? I use(d) this a lot in the old forum settings and would appreciate if I could still do it.
Please make the search box a proper rectangle. Nothing on any EVE forum has rounded corners, so the search box should not either. (actually the light gray frame around the search field on the actual search page has. >.<) Rounded corners are horrible! They make everything look like lollipop child-toys.
All the icons on the posts (new posts, no new posts, etc.) in the thread list are gone.

A thing that is bothering me for ages now: How do I use the "EVE Universe" drop down menu, where all the EVE sites are listed on a mobile (except for not at all)? When I tap on it, nothing happens; it erratically extends when I hover over it but collapses as soon as my finger moves.
- In UC Browser V 4.0.0.455, when I tap and hold my finger on it, the drop down opens but at the same time the browser context menu with options like copy link appears and covers the list (this is in UC Browser on WP 8.1) and as soon as I move my finger, the list disappears;
- In IE 10 a sort of long tap on the EVE Online either opens the context menu and when I tap on empty space, the list opens.

the notifications area lost the links to character profiles when that character likes your posts or posts in a bookmarked thread, which was useful to me
someone said something about separating eve gate and eve forums but i think it's a shame to lose this functionality
i can't highlight the character name to google search it or paste it in evewho, either
i like that clicking anywhere on a notification takes you to the post (this is what i usually clicked on anyway), and that the notifications pop up when i move the cursor to the flag icon instead of having to click |

As for the issue you've been encountering in your mobile device. When attempting to expand the menu, does your link on the page add a '#' character to it's end?
[1] They do indeed show up after some time. Guess I was just a bit too impatient.
[2] It does add the # to the url when i short tap on the menu in the IE (standard browser on my Lumia) as well as the mentioned UC Browser version. When I long tap on it, the mentioned context menu (copy link, share link, etc.) opens, which disappears when I tap in empty space around it and the list with all the sub pages opens. Then no # is added to the url.
Also, thanks a lot for reinstating the background personalization setting. Very much appreciated. |

also, a chrome addon used for reducing the brightness of web pages shows me colors that are similar to the Dust forums. I don't think EVE has any lore attachment to these yellow/gray colors, so... is it possible to give the EVE forum a Dust style color scheme? perhaps more customizable color options?

Gawd, you Dev's must really be bored or scared to think up new stuff to work on. Don't know why you have to constantly mess around with stuff that works. Forums were fine before, sure they could have used a little polish but doing a major overhaul wasn't necessary.
I'm Minmatar and I want my Minmatar screen back again. I definitely don't like looking at Sansha ships.
Don't know why you reduced the amount of letter/character count in the forum signature. Forum signature stats were fine before, now it's almost useless since it won't contain very much. Please roll back the forum signature to how it was before.
ISD and CSM buttons? Really? OK, maybe a useful addition but they definitely need to be different colors.

The post date is now shown as how long ago the post was made. Any chance you could add an option to show the date in addition /instead of the time from the post? Better yet, would you give that option to those of us too who don't care to log on every time we want to read the forums? |

A few comments on the current change : - By any chance, if we can change the background, can we have a checkbox to make it static on the page, so when we scroll, we don't have a black background adter a few posts ? - I'm missing a direct link from eve-gate to forum and to dev blogs - will there be again a link to devblog somewhere in the forum ? (that was usefull not to make a few clicks to switch forum / devblogs) - How can i see my last posts (as it's not anymore in gate) ? |

The time stamp definitely needs to be reverted back to how it was before. Come on, this is a game based in the future with spaceships and computers, it should list the year, day, hour, minutes and seconds of when it was posted.
I hate to say this but having it show "A few minutes ago" or "About an hour ago" or "A day ago" tells me you're doing the same thing to these forums as you're doing to the game, dumbing it down.

On the forum profile you'll be able to see latest 15-20 posts made by user and other useful information. Hopefully this update will be adequate until phase 2 is released.

I really miss the Dev Blog link at the top. Thank you for providing a link to it somewhere.
Perhaps this is just my perspective, but there are two things I come to the eveonline site for: 1.) Forums 2.) Dev Blogs.
Honestly, I feel like the information released in Dev Blogs is very important information to have easy access too. As such, I feel like the link to take me to Dev Blogs should be blatant and in your face, not hidden under the "character selection" area of the profile. It is very unintuitive to have it located there too!!!! I'd honestly recommend putting it under the EvE Universe menu. I realize it is part of the community pages, but it's such an important part of how CCP disseminates upcoming changes it should have its own selection choice right below (or in place of) the community pages link! |

It's not so bad when you're only into minutes and hours, but as the time scale increases, it gets more and more imprecise. I wouldn't say that it bothers me, personally, but I'm the kind of person that likes precision, and the date and time laid out in the full timestamp format is both precise and orderly.
I don't dislike the timeago, but switching it to be the tooltip on mouseover instead of the default display would probably cause less furor! Essentially, the default functionality stays the same, while adding the timeago as an option for people who want to see it. I would definitely use it on early mornings when I can't brain enough to do my own math.

One reason is precisely that to which you refer : having to look at number and figuring out.
Ex : posted 23 days ago vs an exact date. Is this "4 month ago" was posted before or after the release of June 13, 2014 ? Etc...

My blog focuses on translating EVE related English stuff (mainly dev forum posts and dev blogs) into Japanese and when doing so I always include the original time stamp. I must say that I've come to find hovering over "time ago" each time I check date/time posted fairly bothersome. Rare case, I know but might as well have my voice heard.
It would be really nice if you could choose what to show from UTC (EVE time) / local time / relative time.

Hey all,
I agree with the social media functionality you're going for, and the influences. mobile is definitely a thing.
Something I've always had difficulty with at the bottom of forum pages is navigating back to a section (such as EVE Information Portal). Specifically, clicking the section I'm currently browsing from the drop-down like this is unresponsive, and getting back to an overview of the section takes several actions such as using the Top button then selecting "EVE Information Portal" from the forum tree, or hitting back a few times... but I think you meant for the navigation function to be there in the drop-down.
o/
any chance you might include a "Post to Twitter" button? Could see that getting used, and not just by Dev types.

Let's seeif that works ... it does. Do you see the missing space between "see" and "if"? These are 2 links and in the text editor I have a normal space between the two words, however, in the actual post, this space is removed for some reason. Only if I put a non-breaking space (Alt + 0160) in between the 2 links, the space appears (even 2 normal spaces are ignored). Only if I include the space in the url-tag, the normal space shows. |

I find it easier to read the date because it gives me an idea when it was made during the day. If a post was made on afternoon it can be easily seen from the timestamp rather than working out what the time was 17 hours ago.
If I leave the house for 8 hours at 0800 and start reading the posts at 1600 the relative time doesn't still give me any additional information. If the timestamp is on my regional time or at least some easy to convert such as the UTC, the about 8 hours is as accurate as the hour where I dropped off reading. I can just start reading the posts made after 8 whereas with the relative time I need to guess how the time gets rounded and work from there.
Even further, should someone want to archive a post by screencapping, a solid date is way more convenient than "4 hours ago".
The relative time from post is great, but only for a few hours. After that it the convenience is lost. |

This is just my personal opinion but...
"[x] [timeunit] ago" is to me a very imprecise way of displaying data that by nature is accurate. I get the impression that the entity to whom the forum (or whatever) software belongs to doesn't really care for their customers. They're doing their work halfheartedly.
Twitter and Facebook are popular yes, but is the reason for their popularity the way they display timestamps? I don't think so.
How about this. Make a configuration option where the forum user can choose which way of presenting time is their preferred one a use that for the 'always shown' timestamp and use the other way for the tooltip. How does that sound?

As far as I understand English language that alone is a rather vague time period. It can be used for a 12 hour period (for example from dawn till dusk) or for a 24 hour period. So when it says posted about a day ago what does that mean? 8 hour ago? 12 hours ago? 17 hours ago? 21 hours ago? 26 hours ago? What? This really is a bad way of displaying time. Please give us a choice to use the precise timestamp, thanks.
On a forum where I have yet to discover a way to set the timezone for myself I kind of like this better. In EVE I have no problem working with EVE time. On a forum it's a different story.

Nice upgrade to forums. Now GM, CSM and ISD badges are working.
I'm still missing CSM and ISD badges at forum headline page. I could immediately see where CSM and ISD have made comments.
There could also be option to view DEV, GM, CSM and ISD posts in one row. Now I need to view them separately.
There could also be dislike button. You should keep likes and dislikes separate numbers. If someone raises lots of good and bad feelings in people receive lots of like and lots of dislikes. End result is not zero.
Allow placing likes (and dislikes) in closed thread.
Place bounty button would be nice in forums!
I have noticed that date and time has been removed and instead there is "3 days ago" or "7 months ago" type of marking. Could date and time be displayed after this "3 days ago" type of marking?
ISD and CSM badges could have different background color.

A quick look at this forum software's feature page reveals that enabling this would quite litteraly be a matter of flipping a switch. And maybe editing the settings page a bit. Seriously though, I have no clue why they can't just enable timezones. I don't mind the relative time either, but if it's already available why not turn it on?

The actual time should be the default with the ultra-vague "about x minutes/hours/days ago" in the tooltip.

What I'd like to know is why the Eve Online Community wasn't consulted first before this timestamp change? Just because you like it doesn't mean the Eve Online Community will like it, which has pretty much been proven with multiple replies posted in this thread.
Just a little heads up, most players here don't want a rough idea or estimate of when something happened, we want to know exact details, time and date. As someone else already pointed out about the timeago - it's very misleading and doesn't equate into the same meaning for everyone. Hell, 'a month ago' could be 28 days, 30 days or 32 days. That's a 4 day difference which gets larger as more time passes.
Just because Twitter, Facebook and some other sites use it doesn't mean Eve should use it. That's what made Eve Online great, it was different from all the other sites. Gotta say reading the 'Timeago' stamp seems like CCP is regarding the player base as children. Like when a child asks 'when' and the parents reply 'soon' or 'in a while'.
Bottom line - the 'Timeago' stamp is insulting and demeaning to the intellect of the player base.

Well said.
Here's one more suggestion, There's a lot of space between the 'timeago' and 'number of likes' fields so how about putting them both there.
Mind you if CCP really is going away from the fixed width forums this might not be possible. Then I (again) suggest giving the players the ability the make the choice between time formats.

Small suggestion / complaint
In the old notifications window clicking someone's name took you to their eve gate page. Now it just routes to the post. So when I see "XXXX liked your post", I usually think, "Great! ....who is XXXX?" Would like to see something similar to the old system where you can click their name OR click the post instead of just the latter.
Apologies if already addressed in the thread. (TLDR!)

Some 'cosmetic' things:
- in the top bar the notifications like "you have a message" or "someone liked your post" and "someone post in your thread" used to be in the "forum orange" until you hover over the bar or click
- the bar uses a very "dark grey" #0d0d0d I believe it is. Please use #FFFFFF or commenly know as white or a "brighter grey" intstead
- the "up there" arrow used to be on the left
- the forum threads you were clicking on used to get marked as "read" (the orange star indicating that some posted disappeared) opening them in a new tab

Your reply should actually be reported for flaming with intent to incite rage - as per forum rules.
Seems to me you haven't been playing this game very long. CCP use to consult with the playerbase before making changes, very much so until Incarna which caused the Summer Of Rage. Since then CCP has just gotten more and more distant from the core aspect of this game, making changes because it sounded good then later having to revert it because in actuality it wasn't good at all.
Anyway, in case you don't know this, most players in this game want specific details, not generalized info that's easily misinterpreted by everyone.
Main problem with the timestamp is it's been dumbed down and presented as basic generalized info, it's insulting and demeaning towards the community's intellect. In real life when someone asks the question 'when', they expect an explicit answer, not a generalization.
But if you really need a reason why it should be changed back, having to hover the mouse over the Timeago stamp to view the actual date and time prohibits the ability to copy and paste that info when needed. Not to mention CCP having to write and install extra code in order for players to view the actual time and date is just another example of incompetent programing that's been turning this game into a memory hog, constantly eating more and more Hard Drive space with each little patch that's being done every couple of days.
I'm sorry but this isn't 'Hello Kitty'. This is Eve Online, a futuristic science fiction space game about spaceships, computers, clones, etc. If people can't handle an exact display of time listed in these forums because it requires a little bit of brain work, then they definitely won't be able to handle this game.

Have you made the signature character limit smaller? My signature used to fit with the linking code, now when I try to link to my public roams forum in my signature, it does this weird footnotey thing [1], places the link below the signature, and removes the descriptive text for the link because I've run out of characters. Pretty certain we used to be limited to 500 characters in our signature, now it seems like it's limited to 250. My signature is 245 characters (if I remember right), but with the weird linking code, it exceeds it.
Any chance you can up the character limit for signatures, and/or not count formatting/linking code in the limit?

GG The character limit was decreased by half, as the Markdown code takes significantly less characters for styling than BBCode, or 4 characters instead of 12 to form a link. If the markdown helper is taking up too many characters for your taste, please try the following format.

The problem I was having getting my existing signature (which was under 250 characters) to fit was caused by how the new system counts characters. Since you now have to use two returns for a line break, that was adding four characters, plus something else weird going on that I've not figured out yet with how it counts characters.
I got it to link by doing a bit of rewording.
250 characters including counting for formatting/linking/etc code, line breaks, etc., is too small. While I totally understand not wanting huge signatures, the inability for existing signatures to fit without hassle is somewhat irritating.
I do hope you consider raising the limit back up, if not to 500, at least to 350.
Just my two bytes, thanks for all that you do!

This is a bit outside of the box, but you're reducing the usefulness of the forums as an intel tool (by removing employment history). again, outside of the box, but a move the other way would include bounties or war dec functionality in the forum interface. The notifications are simplified a bit much, imo, but I feel you. The new interface is easier to grope with a smartphone touch screen, and that's just getting with the times. [totally neutral comment, but this burden is shifted to evewho.com/pilot/CCP_Rarara and logging in to the client.]
totally should add a tweet button esp. for dev posts. but also for general spammery because exposure
Hi,
I believe you're mixing up EVE Gate profiles and EVE Forum profiles. The EVE Gate profile still shows employment history while the EVE Forum profile shows more forum related information. Previously you were always taken straight to the EVE Gate profile.
I'll see if we can do something about notifications for phase 2.

DMC Yep, I'm grateful for that - just keeping my fingers crossed that I no longer have to reset it every few days like before! Oh, dear! No such luck, then.
Please, CCP, make it so that our chosen background persists until such time as we choose to alter it.
Having to reset it evrey few days is a real PITA.
[Edit] Ah, it seems that I need to rephrase my request:
Please, CCP, give us back the ability to choose our own background that you appeared to have reinstated but have apparently just withdrawn again after only a few days. |

In the old system all I had to do was click my profile link at the top of the page. Now I can't find it anywhere (except via your link). It certainly doesn't appear on my Evegate profile page.
I have been using the Gallente background, like Salpun, and, just like Salpun, it has switched back to default at some point during the past 18 hours (without any action by me). It has always behaved like this since I first started using the forums. |

Only if you specify which forums you wish to receive Dev posts from, regrettably there are no exclusion rules for this search.

They have at no point been moved from your EVE Gate profile settings. What you're experiencing however is that we've decoupled the forums mostly from EVE Gate with the only setting remaining there, that can affect the forums, is the custom background.
Current route to change background: 1. a) Hover over EVE Universe b) Visit your or any forum profile 2. a) Click on EVE Gate b) Click on "View EVE Gate Profile" 3. Hover over your character name ( EVE Gate header ) 4. Click on Profile Settings 5. Click on Personalize 6. Choose a background 7. Save settings

That isn't quite how I remember it, and considering I've been doing it on an almost weekly basis I'm sure my memory isn't faulty.
Anyways - setting it is one thing, keeping it is another thing entirely. Could you please fix it so that the background persists until any future adjustment?
P.S.
And as mentioned above, please put back the Dev Blog link. |

Thread Filtering
How about an option to "Hide Post from this user / corporation / alliance" ?
Maybe the list of hidden users / corps/ alliances is in the Forum Settings?
Maybe there is a check box at the top of the thread to enable/disable filtering?
How about a "hide posts from NPC Corps" option?

This is a bit outside of the box, but you're reducing the usefulness of the forums as an intel tool (by removing employment history). again, outside of the box, but a move the other way would include bounties or war dec functionality in the forum interface. The notifications are simplified a bit much, imo, but I feel you. The new interface is easier to grope with a smartphone touch screen, and that's just getting with the times. [totally neutral comment, but this burden is shifted to evewho.com/pilot/CCP_Rarara and logging in to the client.]
totally should add a tweet button esp. for dev posts. but also for general spammery because exposure Hi, I believe you're mixing up EVE Gate profiles and EVE Forum profiles. The EVE Gate profile still shows employment history while the EVE Forum profile shows more forum related information. Previously you were always taken straight to the EVE Gate profile. I'll see if we can do something about notifications for phase 2.
EVE Gate profile and EVE Forum profile should really be linked if not merged...Please consider that for phase 2. |
