I have just spent all day minining 0.4 sector for jaspet and had one of my alts ships blown out from under me in three shots and another one barricaded in a station so that it does not get shot at by the same jerks.
When I started playing you could mine in low sec and survive as long as you stayed alert. Nowerdays the jerks have got big ships with great weapons and unless you are also in a tank you are dead in five seconds.
It is killing the game, there should be a way to stop these killjoys, they can kill without any comeback. Alternatively create a new game for the boys who just want to shot everything and let them play with themselves.

Uhm, how the heck do you manage to die in low security if you stay alert? I mean the only possible circumstance is taking a hauler into a gate camp without checking and getting sniped =/

The point is it is difficult to shoot in a miner and flying my Apoc in is something of a waste, especially as I can not fit much ore in the hold.

Last I checked mining in low-sec isn't all that dangerous if you know what you're doing.

What is your solution then? Give miners god mode? No PvP unless you got your PvP tag up(Like WoW)? You do know, that this would not only ruin the pirates fun, but also the whole economy.

What ever gave you that idea? Keep an eye on local, make instadocks, fit WCS and you can avoid most hostile encounters. However, the very nature of low-sec prevents any guarantee of safety no matter how many precautions you take.
If you can't hack getting blown up, go and mine kernite in high-sec. --------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, sort of like that, but with more lasers and smacktalk. And opening the can is like opening Christmas presents, but with less irritating wrapping paper, and no relatives ****ing you off. Also, you have no requirement to pretend you like the contents if it does not satisfy you.

I stopped flying expensive ships, with lovely mods, into low sec because the risk of losing them was too great and the insurance did not even cover the cost of the ship. Now I fly cheap old ships with stuff all on and they still shoot.

Are you mining in a heavily populated low sec system? If so, you may want to move, hostiles can hide amongst the crowd and jump on you before you've figured out who's who.
If you're mining in a backwater low sec system, then it's your own fault for not watching local and safespotting when someone jumps in.
Risk vs. reward.

I am a miner too and I do not want solo-mining in lowsec to be risk free. This is where you and I get to PvP via proxy. I mine in low sec with a team and live. You mine in low sec solo and die. I get better prices for the minerals because you bring nothing to the market.
This is the EvE way...everyone PvPs in some fashion. |

Edited by: Lucio on 03/09/2006 20:22:23 He does have a point, no matter how alert you are, a mining ship that isn't a fully tanked BS stands zero chance against a PvP setup and the haulers are also defenceless unless you have a top of the line T2 hauler.
Perhaps CCP should reduce damage across the system and make it more interesting for the victim rather than a foregone conclusion that the pirate always wins....

good suggestion
Get some friends as protectors. Many pirates wont shoot if they feel they are outnumbered. Friends doesnt mean alts on different clients thats like knocking one out your friend is your right hand.
Dont play with 3 clients open its hard to stay alert when u have to concentrate on more than one client.
Leave your noob corp and join a real corp one that will allow you to do things together a little like first suggestion really.
As for ruining the game this has been happening since the dawn of eve its stil,l in there and it hasnt ruined the game expect it still to be in game in 3 more years.
Finally if you dont want to get blown up because your 3 clients are too much to operate effectivly and you are not able to find friends becasue of some difficulty that is unforseen by myself then stick to high sec.

A well prepared pilot has no excuse to get caught by anything but a covert ops cloaked ship.
It's all a matter of how paranoid you are.
I'll give you a hint, for those among you with a veldspar complex: your ship has a scanner. It is not just an offensive tool.

it's not like you HAVE to go to low-sec, right? if you do, expect to be shot at. why? because ppl can. because it's how they play the game. next time bring a friend or two in combat ships for protection. or when ninja mining learn how to use local and the scanner. so... yes, low-sec and 0.0 is contested space. the strongest one gets the pie. or the smartest one? or...? definetely those with guns.
and tbh you should know that being almost 2 years old. it's pretty difficult to solo around so might as well recruit ppl for your private corp or join a real one... and why does it ruin the game if it has been like that for years?

The best tip I can give you...
Skip .4-.1 mining. Get yourself into an alliance and mine in 0.0. Its extreamly safe to mine in an alliance controlled area, even more safe than lowsec. The dues you will need to pay to be in that alliance are miniscule compared to the mins you will get.

Higher reward comes with higher risk, if you want the good rocks you need to put in effort for them. That may involve a stabbed out mining cruiser, or what about having your corp/alliance have a mining operation to provide escorts? There are ways, but if you are solo they won't be as efficient as you can do in 0.9 space.

Actually, we can. We fully understand that not everyone wants to PvP. What we don't understand is what catastrophic misunderstanding on their part leads them to believe that they should be safe, despite their refusal to take the necessary precautions, in unsafe space, having clicked past the "OMG EBIL PIE-RATS CAN KILL YOU!" warning sign.

Remind us all where the "challenge" of mining is - seeing as you seem to like challenges. Ah yes - it's the player pirates. You appear to be trying to apply a double-standard - that player pirates should seek a challenge so that miners don't have one.

Yep...
Reference the posts i made last week on the low sec ore.
Time you finished bringing your friends (which won't protect your jet cans, barges, or haulers anyway)
You would be able to mine more minerals in high sec asking them to fit mining lasers instead.
This is not the fault of highsec mining, it's the complete unbalance of the practice of mining in low sec with whats up for grabs and the available tactics of agressor. ______ Long ago one gorgeous night, we let the stars grow free. We let Zhuge do that once, he came back carrying a traffic cone, a forsale sign and three empty bottles of dutch lager. He also lost his Zimmer Frame... - Imaran

What point did I miss? The post I quoted appeared to complaining that pirates attacking miners have low risk - yet totally ignoring the fact that if pirates DIDN'T attack miners, where would the risk for miners be?
If people want to mine with zero risk then they can save themselves $15 a month by typing 1000000+1000000= into their calculator then pressing the = button every X minutes. Then just pretend the number on the calculator is ISK and voila - risk-free mining.
I DO agree that some areas of PVP in Eve look imbalanced - but anything which expedites the risk-free creation of ISK is a bad move.
So please - explain to me WHICH point it is I'm missing.

Edited by: coldplasma on 03/09/2006 21:51:51 Don't mine in low-sec, it really is dangerous. It's so busy and you don't know who's going to jump into system or who's friendly or not. There are pirates who'll gladly pop you and who are positive sec status.
Solution? Join a 0.0 alliance, some of the systems around there have superb ore are quiet enough that maybe a few people will pass through every hour. If that system is in space controlled by your alliance, you are probably not going to see a hostile at all. Also, when someone DOES jump into the system, you instantly know whether they are friendly or not. The reward is also A LOT better, if you ever manage to get your hands on a hulk barge, with the proper skills and proper equipment, you could earn maybe 50million ISK in 1 hour. Just make sure you can tank the 0.0 rats. ____________________________

Some people have made constructive comments, for example I am now looking at the recruitment thread as joining a corp rather than having my own might be a way to get around the problem but it does not solve the problem, which some of the people who have posted here have also acknowledged.

For an industrial type, there are a lot of real benefits that joining a thriving alliance can offer you. One is the already mentioned escort pilots, but of even more use is that if you get with an alliance that controls their own 0.0 space it offers areas that are free of pirates for the most part. Yes, the possibility is still there, but you will see less of them and will have help available.
Then you can also consider putting up your own POS to do moon harvesting. Yeah, they can be annoying as far as the logistics and the starting price is a bit high, but they do give a steady source of income that keeps running when you are asleep. And don't forget more access to ice as well.
If there are a number of manufacturers in the alliance, it gives guaranteed customers for the minerals. Or if you are into manufacturing yourself, the combat pilots are a solid customer base as well. Get in close with them, and you can get some serious income. There is always a demand for T1 Frigates, Cruisers and even Battleships if you can produce them. You don't need to go T2 to make money producing, if you can find market needs that aren't being met. (for instance, Devoid region is really short on T1 projectile turrets, ammo, and Minmatar cruisers most of the time).
And then there is the great intangible benefit.... people to talk to in chat or on a voice server, and that sure does break up a lot of the boredom of mining.
If you are interested, my alt is in a fairly large alliance and I can check a few corps that always need mining/manufacturing types. Drop me a mail in game and I'll see what I can do.

OK, I will explain what I wish that you do. Provide a structured and justified answer to each of these questions, taken in order from your original post:
1a) Why do you assume people are jerks (an insult to the real life character of the player), simply because they do not play the game like you, though they are playing exactly the same game, within the same guidlines as you? 1b) Do you think insulting them makes your arguments more convicing?
2) Why should you be able to mine in unsafe space in safety, without making sacrifices or commitments to aid your safety?
3a) How has "as long as you stayed alert" changed? Were you scanning constantly to see people approching you? Were you aligned? Were you fitting (urgh) WCS or ECM? Were you watching local for pirates? 3b) Have you even tried to defend yourself, or did you just come here to complain that Eve is broken?
4) What exactly is "without any comback" supposed to mean? You recieve sec hits for opening fire, and the victim of a one-sided attack gains killrights on the aggressor. He is flagged for 15minutes, during which he will be fired upon at stations or gates (giving a huge advantage to anyone hunting him), and can be attacked without penalty. If he takes enough sec hits, he loses access to much of space. The aggressor is also just as able to be attacked as you in low sec.
5) Do you realise that "it is killing the game" is fully subjective, and what is your opinion is not holy writ, nor is it apparently near the majority view?
6) Is piracy any less valid as a way of making ISK than mining or PvE?
7a) Why do you join a game where this is allowed, and even advertised as such (the original game box said "pirate" as one of the listed professions, though admittedly, it also says bounty hunter, so that could be called into question), and then demand that it is changed to suit your needs, and another game is made for "the boys who just want to shot everything and let them play with themselves"? That game exists, it is called Eve Online, and you joined it. There are plenty of games which are totally carebear (not intended as abuse) focussed out there, yet you joined Eve Online, possibly the harshest game out there. 7b) What gives you the right to demand that the game you chose, despite it being a piratey game, be made your carebear heaven, even though there are many games out there which already fit your mould, and you have disdained them?

It is killing the game, there should be a way to stop these killjoys, they can kill without any comeback. Alternatively create a new game for the boys who just want to shot everything and let them play with themselves.

I feel your pain, but posting on here will just get you flamed. Theres nothing on here but people who just cant understand that not everyone likes to PvP.
If you dont like to pvp dont go into low sec, its fairly simple.
EVE is a PVP game, the entire game is designed around PVP, maybe youre in the wrong game?

I hear WoW has an expansion comming out. You might want to try that game if you don't like PvP. I think its prettymuch a given in eve that killing people is cool. Unless, you're mining with a group of people, leave the mining barge docked! That or hire someone to defend you while you're mining.
Who in their right mind would solo a mining barge? Even in .6 the rats will chew it up without outside help.

You try killing a good pirate in this game, it's pretty much impossible.
Either they snipe you while warp aligned to a safespot, sniping back will only make them warp, so your chance of killing them is pretty much zero unless you have a whole gang including covops hunting them, and even then you will only get them if they are lazy and don't change sniperspots every so often or just log out when they see local filling up with hostiles.
Or alternatively they are in a really fast ship, preferably a vagabond, because nothing that it can't outrun can kill it and nothing that can kill it it can't outrun. Ultra fast ships are also next to immune to warp bubbles because the won't stay in them for more then 3 seconds.
While I agree that there is no point to whining, fighting back is really not very easy right now, the amount of time, effort, people and not to mention luck it takes to kill a single pirate is so great that you will make more money by just ignoring the losses and don't try to fight back or take revenge.

While I have little to no sympathy for pirates, this game is made for them as much as it's made for carebears. As far as I'm concerned, so long as a reasonable balance is maintained it should stay that way. The realism is what makes Eve the best mmorpg out there. Working in low sec, especially solo as is my own preference as well, means you stand a chance of having your *** shot off. Take what precautions you can. Such as taking escort, using your scanner regularly, or just try to stay in the shadows as I do.
Play it smart and your chances of survival go way up. Just don't forget, some time your gonna lose a ship. Take a breather, hunt them down, whatever you gots to do just remember it isn't the end of the world.

Edited by: Tatsue Nuko on 04/09/2006 03:34:17 There really has been a lot said that's good, but I'll repeat it anyway:
Get friends.
Even if you don't play regularly due to RL, get with a corp that suits your playstyle. I reckon most industrial outfits wouldn't mind if you're not there 4 hours every single night, and if you're with a corp you should mostly have access to collaborative mining operations.
If you have enough people, having two-three of you in combat-fitted battleships or some such support shouldn't be a serious dent in mining effectiveness, and most pure pirates will frown at their odds in that situation. If you are mining a location that requires a jump or two for the haulers, have one of those escort guys in an interceptor or cov-op patrolling the route.
Also, if there is a station in your mining system, make sure everyone has a combat ready ship of their choice ready in the station. That way, if the escort reports a hostile gang coming in, everyone can switch with no fuzz and you might even get kills! :D
(Golden scenario there - switch to q-ship BSes at that time: have a few mining lasers on each one and just go back mining. When the nasties come in, keep the mining lasers on but start shooting with the guns and have a few guys tackle them. Then revel in your killmails.)
End of the story is quite simple: get friends. It is an MMO, after all, so having buddies to play with should be one of the key motivations for paying your subscription fee anyway, shouldn't it?
Also, if you want a good place to learn, talk to EVE University. Good bunch from what I hear, an RL mate of mine flew with them a while back and really liked it.
Edit: As an ex-carebear tho, I really got to say that you should ditch the mining lasers and try some high-caliber turrets or sleek sexy interceptors. I used to find mining meditative and would strip systems in lowsec on my own, but then I was with JF a while and now I just want the adrenaline nothing but Player versus Player combat can give.

Gang with a recon ship or two is going to be really hard to beat. Have your recon alt, set him up in his own corporation, call it 'Something Mining and Manufacturering' or whatever, keep his sec rating high, jump him into the system first, find a mission running guy or miner, scrambling and jam / damp. Then jump your killing ship in.
Unless you dock with every single new person that enters a system, you can never escape from that unless you log out.

They pop you, steal your ore and mods, and sell them. They're pirates, this is how they make money. It isn't about the challenge, its about the isk, AND the exciting life of PvP.
Plus, without the pirates, my friend, your haul of low sec ore would be worthless. It is percisely because miners like you get blown up, that the value minerals extracted from ore mined in low sec have a high value.

The hardest thing to hunt is a pirate, thats what makes it so rewarding. And believe it or not, some ppl play this game for fun, not to hoard isk I'd have loved to have seen [name removed to prevent flaming war]'s face yesterday when he logged back in after "his connection dropped" during combat to find himself in a clone station after we scanned down his pod :)... Oh and good pirates have lovely faction fitted ships, VERY nice loot lol

Edited by: E''Veel P''Tiga on 04/09/2006 06:27:41 Ok, I'm going to try and give the OP some tips here. I mine in low sec only and have yet to be killed.
Here's how I go about it.
1. I find a system that has little traffic. I use a shuttle to scout these possible locations. 2. Once I find a suitable location i make instas, with the shuttle, from roids to station to gates to safe spots etc. 3. I then go get my hauler stuffed with two shuttles and fly back in the shuttle to get my mining ship and a combat ship. 4. Once I have all my ships I start my operation. I go out and mine. I make sure I'm alligned with an escape route. I also mine at the furthest point in the belt from the beacon since this is where pirates jump in. Being far from the jump in point and being allign gives you precious time needed to escape. 5. Watch the local channel like a hawk. If your not sure about someone your better off just going to a safe spot and cheak them out. Jet cans last a while so you can wait it out or jump in a combat ship to chase them away. 6. Change cans offen. You never know for how long you might need to run around or clear npc rats. I'm not worried about my can. Someone in a pirate ship has a small hold so they can't really steal much. Ore thieves are another matter but were not talking about them. 7.When the cans filled I get the hauler and bring in the ore and start the process over.
I know this isn't the most profitable way to mine but it's a lot more fun then mining in High sec. It's unfortunate you view "Human Rats" as you call them as a pain in the ass. Mining is boring without them. I find it exciting to get chased around, or jumping to a safespot scanning to see if the guy in the system is after me. I also take satisfaction being able to frustrate them cuz they cant catch me. Or switch to my combat ship and switch the roles around and become the hunter. The problem is you've put yourself in a situation that you don't want to be in. You also say you can't equip your ship to deal with pirates but your in a mining ship and there in combat ships. You can't have your cake and eat it too. What would be the point of having ship classes if all ships could do everything. _______________

I wish to point you to this link:

Paying attn to the following statments:
̣ Enter space with security status below 0.5 at own risk. You can NEVER expect to be safe in unsecured space regardless of sentry guns, CONCORD presence, and such.
̣ Don't expect CONCORD to keep you immune to attacks or ship losses. Like in the real world, law enforcers often arrive too late at the scene of the crime, and even though they able to punish the criminal, they can't always prevent the crime.
̣ Don't rely on Sentry Guns to keep you a 100% safe. Especially not when traveling in unsecured space. There are several tactical ways to avoid sentry gun fire, which are NOT considered to be an exploit.
̣ Keep an eye on local; if people warp jam your ship, offer to pay them to stay alive - sometimes it works and any chance is better than the alternative. ---

Hate and confusion about piracy tend to raise, when you see only the external face of it. To understand, why people like to pirate, you should become one of them. Don't be surprised, when you start to like it and find yourself being the guy whos harrasing your past fellow miners.
The same kind of experience came to me through Ultima Online. Early when Ultima Online was in it's early stage in year 97-98, the major profession in UO was thievery. Back then, when you stopped to talk to some guy and lost your attention, you would have been robbed blind behind your back. I used to hate thievery so much that send the same kind of whine letters, like yours, to Richard Garriot, the head dev of UO back then. So the inevitable thing happend and the thieves were nerfed badly. But that is not the point of the story. The point of the story is that years after that I trained myself to be a thief amongst thieves and it was the best fun I had in the whole history of my UO gameplay. Then I really hated that the thieves were nerfed so badly back then and well I was also a bit embarrased of my whining on thievery If A is success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut. - Mr. Einstein |

I understand it perfectly. However, EvE has a concept, unlike most other (****ty) MMOs out there, which makes it great; this concept is Risk vs Reward.
You choose to mine in lowsec to reap greater rewards, you also choose to put yourself in harm's way.
If you don't like the heat, get out of the oven. Or sun. Or whatever.
