Somethings are mostly e-peen enhancers. Outposts don't make enough money to justify building one instead of jump hauling for a POS. Titans arent worth the BPO costs and the build costs for their combat/logistics utility under anyone's valuation. Eventually people need things to do and in a game what is actually pragmatic and efficient won't prevent people with the means to be inefficient from taking the next step. The Enemy's Gate is Down

Yay, another indestructable item in EVE, goes along fine with the Outposts. No one will be able to destroy the thing as it is probably parked on an alternative account which will at most log on for people to watch the giant ship inside a POS forcefield, and from time to time use its "remote super weapon" to annhilate a hostile fleet for a mere cost of approx. 20m ISK. Good going CCP, and congrats to ASCN.Never drive any faster than your guardian angel can fly.

Off topic but i certainly wouldn't say outposts don't make the money they cost, thats just dumb. Maybe certain ones don't, but the minnie one makes loads. They really don't. For the time being lets assume that the Outpost is secured only by 1 POS. All you need to replicate the function of a refining outpost is a POS, a dreadnought (or carrier) and a conquerable station that you did not build(or NPC station). You can setup the POS in your mining system. Mine to your hearts content and haul to a common can at the POS. You then jump the dread back and forth to haul to the NPC or conquerable station. The result is that you have ore in a station with as good or better refining than the minnie outpost (i think, not clear on the %s) and you don't have to build a station much less put up 40 large POS to protect it. The only way the POS makes money is if you are taxing someone else to mine there who would not take advantage of the POS and only then it makes money when the amount taxed exceeds the build cost of the Outpost. Alternatively you would have to spend enough money on fuel for jump hauling over time to offset the build cost of the outpost (and the time spent putting it up). I can't imagine anyone using that much fuel. The Enemy's Gate is Down

Edited by: Halafian on 25/09/2006 19:43:15 Seems very cool -- congratulations! I'm curious about what it means exactly, though. Just how powerful are these things? How much more powerful than a carrier? For example, titan:carrier::carrier:? (Titan is to carrier as carrier is to what?) What happens in one Titan runs into another Titan? Just whoever fires the doomsday first?

But when you factor in time and effort it doesnt make sense at all. If its simply the choice between logging in and doing half an hour mining in a belt and then getting an instant 100% refine at an outpost or a 40%? refine at a pos after an hour!? The numbers dont even come close. Especially for a large alliance, what so everyone and their dog will have a pos with a refinery? Which also needs to be paid for with fuel, defense etc.

You make 12b+ more by default if everyone did it the other way. What's the "other way"? Mining yourself? What I meant was building an outpost to mine in yourself vs. placing a POS (even a bare small one) and using it to stage jump hauling to existing stations. This costs a few billion isk and involves redelopyable resources (you can sell the dreadnought(s) and you can move locations easily) I can actually understand the rationale of building them to tax the mining of others and I mentioned it in my first posts. This is revenue you would not be getting otherwise because you are not doing the mining yourself. It just takes time to recoup this investment. In this case my criticism is of those who are letting you tax them isntead of using available stations if they exist. The Enemy's Gate is Down

Which also needs to be paid for with fuel, defense etc. You didnt read what I said. If the only options were placing a POS with a refinery and refining at 75% or using an outpost then the outpost would be the best choice. There is another choice; jump hauling. You can mine anywhere within jump distance of a Conquerable, NPC or existing outpost and haul the ore by using a dreadnought. This way you spend nothing on fixed assets (bar the very small cost for the 1 POS you would want to place your jet cans in) and can also move locations easily. The Enemy's Gate is Down

Making things easier for people has made a lot of other people rich in the real world. same applies and works very well in eve. Sure there might be more Isk-effective ways of doing it but if they are more complex many will prefer the easier option and after all, the money is in the masses. -

Admittedly my comments are primarily about mining outposts vs. jump hauling. How does using a POS build array compare to the bonuses in an outpost? This is not a rhetorical question, as I do not know the answer. If it is the same though, I can't see much if any justification for the outpost. If the difference is substantial enough, say 5-10%, then I agree that its worth it. You could make a similiar, though somewhat less plausible (from the Outpost owner's side) argument about Caldari POSs. P.S. I'm really not trying to derail the thread ..... but the only "rail" is people saying congrats so I don't think this discussion can hurt much. The Enemy's Gate is Down

But im sick of the whole "you rekon ths is the first titan, well BoB aready has 3 and D2 have 1 and AAA think they have one but its actually an asteroid" Can any1 confirm that this the FIRST player controlled Titan in eve. Kieran. You will know this and you have already commented but nothing could be better than "i can confirm this is the first player owned titan in eve" As this is one of the biggest, if not the bigest event in EvE history, any chance of some clarification. IŠm not privvy to the calcs on LV ref OPŠs but I have a feeling that those Xb isk in deploy costs are repaid rather fast. This kind of reinforces what my point was. The issue for these people is convenience, not making the most money. I don't think I was at all clear, but what I meant to say was that if you had the money to build a (mining) outpost and you build one to make money by using it yourself that you would be better off jump hauling and spending money elsewhere. If you know that you can facilitate mining in a far cheaper way and in effect save you the cost and effort of building an outpost, then you are paying for convenience not for isk making. As we are getting at though, convenience and isk making go hand in hand, its just hard to quantify to what extent. The Enemy's Gate is Down

I can see your point, but I am not actually sure its right. A dread can realistically haul around 50km3. The only lag time in doing it is the time it takes to undock, jump, scoop the can and recharge your cap. Its more realistic to me that the constraint won't be jump hauling the dread but rather the haulers moving ore to cans for the dread. Of course these haulers would have to move the ore to the outpost, which should take the same amount of time. I think the question is that if you needed 4 dreadnoughts continously hauling (this would be PHENOMENAL mining output, but I wouldn't put anything past the hobbits) would you be better off with the disolvable assets of a dread and the easy relocation or with the similiar cost of placing the outpost. I think the logistics of the outpost might be more difficult than the logistics of the larger scale hauling so I would still choose the former, if I could get people to do it. I can see your point with respect to output constraints, but I am not actually sure its right. A dread can realistically haul around 50km3. You assume that there will always be enough people to organize a mining op like that. If you put an outpost down, everyone at any time of the day can refine their loot/ore/etc. Corp arrays fill up really really fast, if you want to use them as a buffer I guess you could, but even filling a freighter with ore is done pretty quickly by a couple of people. Outposts work out better, because you can tax the solo-ratters that are refining their loot there and such forth. ------------------------------------------ BURN in the Righteous Fire of Amarrian Lasers! @Baun: You're right, you could jump haul ore to a nearby refinery, sure. But over time the refinery WOULD pay for itself, even if you just based it on the savings in jump fuel. You are, however, looking at it in 1D. We don't just deploy stations to mine in, we also use them for pos logistics, for jump clones, for "safest of safespots" and various other reasons. They are also, of course, deployed to hit that magical number of (3?) outposts in a constellation that will enable constellational sovereignty for future use. I know you will agree with the points in the last 2 paragraphs, but your point against the "users" really is moot. As a user who jump hauls he must: Run a pos (even if it's just a small) Run a dread (to jump haul it). All of those take time and money and may not even be in the best locations. Refinery outposts, however, are 80% of the time in PRIME mining spots. The people who use them aren't dumb, your criticism of them is, imo, unfounded.

Originally by: Louisa Torres @Baun: You're right, you could jump haul ore to a nearby refinery, sure. Quote: You are, however, looking at it in 1D. We don't just deploy stations to mine in, we also use them for pos logistics, for jump clones, for "safest of safespots" and various other reasons. Most of these things require multiple outposts to be realized to their fullest extent. This complicates quantifying the marginal utility of each additional outpost. I agree that they have other benefits. Quote: They are also, of course, deployed to hit that magical number of (3?) outposts in a constellation that will enable constellational sovereignty for future use. Depending on how this works it could serve as the sole neccesary justification. No one really knows at this point though so I am not sure it should enter the discussion. Quote: I know you will agree with the points in the last 2 paragraphs, but your point against the "users" really is moot. As a user who jump hauls he must: Run a pos (even if it's just a small) Run a dread (to jump haul it). All of those take time and money and may not even be in the best locations. Refinery outposts, however, are 80% of the time in PRIME mining spots. If a user of the station belongs to the alliance that built it, there is almost a guarantee that they can run a POS, since they have to run a kagillion of them to defend the outpost, and that they have access to dread pilots, since they need a kagillion of them to be able to defend against POS assaults. This is why I think using the outposts makes the most obvious sense for a party that cannot do what I am suggesting and when those outposts are run by people who want to exploit a resource that they could not tap and do it by proxy. If you couldn't realistically jump haul back and forth to the one mining conquerable in Feythabolis you could build one outpost to serve as a hub for the areas you wanted to reach. This would give you the benefit of mining the entire area with just one outpost. All "prime" locations would be accesible and people could choose where they wanted to go. Quote: The people who use them aren't dumb, your criticism of them is, imo, unfounded. I don't think they are dumb, you can't really be dumb in the simplest sense and be organized enough that you have the "problem" (heavy quotation marks, its not a problem) of having placed alot of outposts. The problem I have is that most of the actual benefits you cite are largely unquantifiable. It is at best a judgment call to say that you are better off placing outposts for the ancillary benefits than you are in jump hauling. You are weighing convenience and possible convenience realted increased output in addition to nebulous ancillary benefits against the creation of insoluble assets and relatively large up front costs and continued logistics. I am just not convinced that it weighs on the side of outposts and not vice versa. I like the convenience argument and I can certainly see the effects of a large number of outposts of some of the current alliances, but I fail to be convinced that those are the most efficient means. I readily concede, to return to where I started, that the utility of an outpost relative to a titan makes the former less of a purely e-peen enhancement than the latter. The Enemy's Gate is Down

@ Lousia: I got curious so I decided to do some number juggling. If you assume 14billion isk as the cost of the outpost, then you would need to do 8,000 jump hauling trips (back and forth) with a Dread that holds 50km3. This means you need to refine 400,000,000 m3 at the Outpost before you used 14 billion isk in fuel. This values isotopes @ 250 isk p/u and does not take into account the money required to run the POSs that support the outpost (nor the one for the mining op and the cyno fuel). I have not mined much at all in over 2 years so its hard for me to know what these numbers mean anymore, but it seems pretty substantial. The Enemy's Gate is Down

I chose about a 7.3ly jump. I have not mined much at all in over 2 years so its hard for me to know what these numbers mean anymore, but it seems pretty substantial. Considering the fact that when TSYND has a serious mining spree we are talking about a total volume of 4 - 5M mŠ a day which makes up a ROI for about 80 - 100 days. And there we are talking only about 1 corp doing 1 MO, Eventhough our mining division is substantial, i know we are not the biggest out there Guess those figures make the investment less substantial. Also logistics are way easier this way. I think that not all benefits can be measured by isk.

This would actually be true in this case for only one corporation, which is really surprising. My remaining question is what happens when you introduce a reasonable number of POSs to hold sovereignty and secure the outpost. It seems possible to me that if you include this that it might be more expensive to run the Outpost than it ever would be to jump haul the ore. On the other hand if you added a few more corporations that mined alot that might not be true. I don't know the exact numbers on POS operation costs with sovereingty or how many POSs are needed to provide reasonable security, so I cannot attempt this calculation. Q2 how do you secure it? (anchor it or something, soz pos noob ere) Q3 u gonna fit small guns or miner I on it ________ You guys are really lucky about the server state right now. It means you get to keep that titan for longer then you might with the current blob vs pos, GMs norm force a truce. Congrats, ASCN! @ CYVOK: Jump portal generators work, AFAIK. I went through one a while back on SiSi when one of the ISD team was screwing around with a titan. You have to have enough of the appropriate racial fuel to make it work, however. I don't know if you were fueled up when you tried it or not. I think he may have also needed some liquid ozone for the initial activation, though I'm not 100% sure. The guy just had a buddy put up a cyno in another system, then he did something and a massive jump portal appeared, looking similar to the normal jump drive except in that it continued to exist for more than a few seconds and was a lot more flashy. Once the portal was up, anyone wishing to use it had to be in gang and get within 2500m of the titan, then use the jump command from the right click menu on the titan. Each jump sucked up some of the titan's racial fuel. -Wrayeth "Look, pa! I just contributed absolutely nothing to this thread!"

I don't know the exact numbers on POS operation costs with sovereingty or how many POSs are needed to provide reasonable security, so I cannot attempt this calculation. I am interested in what it would show. From what I've heard, it costs around 150mil per large POS per month. You'll find that 5-10 large POS's online (750mil - 1.5bil/mo), with plenty of POS's to back it up, are sufficient to secure sovereignty. That's the bare minimum, though. Many alliances have taken advantage of moon mining to alleviate the supplemental costs of running outposts. When it comes down to it, the comparison between jump hauling ore and building an outpost is impractical. Consider jump hauling 8,000 round trips. It'll take you one minute to actually perform the two jumps in the trip; tack on to that the time it takes to move around in a dread as well as time for the cap to recharge, and 5 minutes will have gone by before you know it. 5 minutes per round trip x 8,000 trips = a disgusting amount of lag time (27.78 days, to be exact). Even with 10 dreads, that's still an immeasurable feat. The level of an outpost's profitability would never truly be surpassed by conventional dread hauling.Nebba - The Vocal Majority

Originally by: Baun Originally by: Karl Shade Making things easier for people has made a lot of other people rich in the real world. same applies and works very well in eve. Sure there might be more Isk-effective ways of doing it but if they are more complex many will prefer the easier option and after all, the money is in the masses. I can see that. I just have trouble valuing that ease at 14billion isk because its very easy to do what I am suggesting. You can move everything (but the actual miner's pods) into position by starting with a 300k SP char with a cyno field and it doesnt take very long. bit offtopic here, but: Mining with a refinery station in system is much much more efficient. It's also available to character of all levels from 'can fly osprey' on up. It'll support mining operations for about 100 hardcore miners in a 5 jump radius. A factory or admin outpost is a profit source, as has been demonstrated by ISS, however they're a little more difficult to turn a profit. However providing a market in 0.0 is also a good profit source. (It's all well and good to say you can jumpdrive mods and ships to your POS, but it's really not the same as being able to resell at a 'proper' market). As is providing factory space. However that's definitely offtopic, but if you're interested in finding out more, let me know ;). Congratulations ASCN on a big shiny jumpdrive hauler. Can I suggest a 'superweapon party' where you invite lots of people to visit in frigates for a test firing? I know I'd be up for a 'pwned by Avatar' killmail :).

Ascendent Frontier. That name has new meaning now. Congradulations on such a massive undertaking. Whoever was in charge of the logistics of this titan program deserves an award for dedication and organization. The mind boggles at the time and energy it took to build this thing. Myself and some friends had a pool going on who would be the first to construct a Titan. I had a feeling that it was going to either be you guys or BoB. I placed my iskies on ASCN. That was a nice 50 million gamble Although I actually thought bob would be the first because of their competitiveness, especially after the mothership incident back in the day. Well done guys. Hell, I would sacrifice my tech 2 fitted Raven just to say I got WTFPWNDBBQ by the damn thing! And I will make SURE fraps is running!

Reminds me a bit of when Cornexant build the first Battleship (noone remembers them anymore btw, so I don't buy the eternal glory bit). You definately have to use the Jump Portal Generator for it's Awsome logistics. I mean you could plan an entire invasion around sneaking in a cyno field and using the JPG to launch an armada behind enemy lines. and then using the clone vat and ship bay to keep the invasion coming.

Congrats to everyone involved in the construction, amazing effort. Its amusing now in hindsight to see the "why" behind many of the things us worker bees have been asked to do over the past few months. Also, props to BoB for their gracious comments in this thread and for consistently bringing honorable fights to us.

I'll be honest and say that I will never be able to accurately reproduce the sound that came out of my speakers. The quality of the capture just doesn't seem to do it justice. My house actually SHOOK before there was an audible sound. It litterally rumbled for about 15 seconds before it went dead silent and then BAMB the ships exploded. I'll have to talk CY into setting it off again so I can get teh Uber capture on it. As far as the domi, that was me in it. I was sitting with 22k armor with 95% EM resists... Shield and half armor was gone. As has been mentioned before, it is extremely possible to tank a doomsday weapon in a BS. But you do so at the expense of gimping your tank and available cap for weapons fittings. Not something you want to do on the off chance you'll run into a titan.

The person that made the thread that a few of you are jumping to arms about isn't a spokesman for ASCN, he's airing his opinion. (Not that I have any official capacity whatsoever, mind you) Take it with a grain of salt, you all know as well as I do that no matter what rules, regulations and procedures you put in place to be respectful there is bound to be something you will read here that you find offensive in some way. I'm happy to get some good fights, to be honest. It's been a really long time since we had a good, even fleet battle without ridiculous numbers on each side, where the hostile fleet didn't safespot and log because the numbers were too even. I say gg to dice for the good pewpewpew sessions we've had over the last few days. Hidden in this signature is a secret message. I like pie.

Seems some of you have forgotten this. But we'll remind you. No worries. Dice, you are an embarrasment to BoB, the real BoB from WW2 that BoB was built on honor and brotherhood mutual respect and self dignity. While the other BoB corps seem to exemplify this you dishonor it. You log off's and hiding and failure to engage any fleet comparible in strengh embaresses it. We lose BS to you because we engage even when it is not tactically sound to do so hoping that you don't log off. You constantly run-off at the mouth. The best fight we had from BOB in the last few days only had a couple dice pilots in it. That battle was fun and gave BoB the upper hand in K-9 I enjoyed being beat that night, I even lost 2 BS to superior tactics employed by the BoB commander. I said so in local, and guess what, nilie and the rest of you dice creeps smacked me while the other BoB guys said nice try etc. Can't you DICE guys see that you are not even liked by your own alliance? I can't wait till BoB holds you to their standard, of course you will fall short and get booted. Let the flames begin, cause when all is said and done flames is all you really have. Oh, is it true you had your spine surgically removed???? Or was it never there. The point I was making was simply that of all the responses by all the BoB pilot's to this thread your corps were the only ones that were rude and inflamatory. Just like in local during a battle or in any forum, your corp and your pilots do not represent themseves well in the gaming community. I am sure that I will be slapped by my CEO for even entertaining this thread but I am hoping that you see how you represent yourself and how you are seen by others. As far as I know this was not the first Titan to be built. Any Alliance having built a Titan wouldnŠt post it on the official boards. The BPO is so expensive... the first Alliance having built a Titan wouldnŠt consider it a great idea to tell everyone they got the BPO and stuff bought, without having built at least a second or third. Most of the initial costs for the first Titan IS the BPO. The two alliances I know of are building their Titans all in secret. DidnŠt know ASCN was building one up until now though. As far as I can see from the links and stuff, ASCN claims to have gathered enough Minerals to build two of them. Now telling everyone it was finished without having spent the Minerals for the second yet, is imho not a rational thing to do. kind regards, Shaala

There's a thin line, but you don't seem to see it. And i f we log off it's due to the fact you had 11 carriers at the POS and this was more than we had BS in our gang. Yesterday you had a gang of 75 and we only had 25 but we fought. And if we log off after the fight it's only logical. We are in enemy teritory, we don't have anywhere to dock. Should we wait there to get probed? Or go back with 15 people to engage 70 after you put a bubble up and drones out? We're good, but not that good. If you can't understand us logging off after that, i'm sorry for you. There was not a single fight where we would have the greater numbers, not counting ganks, thats a different story. And that cheap tactics, trying to separate DICE from BOB with such stupid comments. Unlike ASCN, corps in BOB hold together. Thanks. P.S.: Congrats fot the Titan, even if it's amarr :)

While the other BoB corps seem to exemplify this you dishonor it. Seems someone is looking abit too much tv and not playing eve enough. As some bob pilots stated many times the bob ingame alliance has nothing to do with ideas or values represented by an american tv show. Anyone making connections or comparisons to prove his point is just stupid. Quote: You log off's and hiding and failure to engage any fleet comparible in strengh embaresses it. We lose BS to you because we engage even when it is not tactically sound to do so hoping that you don't log off. You constantly run-off at the mouth. I said so in local, and guess what, nilie and the rest of you dice creeps smacked me while the other BoB guys said nice try etc. must hurt to lose and receive the smacktalk but buhu thats eve. You shot yourself in the foot here if you tried to point out there is a bob "lite" and a true bob. They wouldnt mix fleets now, would they ? Quote: Can't you DICE guys see that you are not even liked by your own alliance? I can't wait till BoB holds you to their standard, of course you will fall short and get booted. How would you know that, are you in their alliance chat, their forums or can provide public eve-o posts by bob members saying "damn we are now with the dice guys" ? Thought so. Minor flaw in your argumentation, if bob would despise and hate dice why did they let them in in the first place since they knew allmost all the ppl involved already from Atuk (BoB) ? Not to mention they apparently get on well enough to involve them in tournament teams, which is for bob a very important representation factor aswell... Quote: Let the flames begin, cause when all is said and done flames is all you really have. Oh, is it true you had your spine surgically removed???? Or was it never there. Brit The flames already began when u started posted but im guessing your CEO will not come down on you for your spine but for the weak smack and the crappy argumentation which makes you initially look like a fool for anyone with enough clue to see through the obvious forum yada yada. Good Luck defending home tho, seems ull need it, even against the lite edition.

Edited by: Darcuese on 27/09/2006 07:11:07 Well, this thread had more then enough pages allready. I never liked such a politnes in game either. this is a game and all of us play certin roles in it. But I never did anything in EVE to reciave praises how well I done. Things I did, I did it for joy, for couse and for my friends. Expecitng congrats and drinking tea I leave for politicians in RL. And while im here....This Thread remind me about noobs corps when mission runner got his hands on first battleship thinking he is immortal now.....untill he dies in next mission and realise its a brain and skills needed to achieve something and not material stuff itself. Personaly, I will congratulate anyone who will use it properly the way it was intended (no matter if its defensive or agressive style). Good effort for building one...but any normal person should allready know that is a hard thing to pull, so congrats are not really neccesary.....except if some need those to w.an.k at home "How good I am". At the time of the engagement we (the other gang) had 17 in gang of which 13 where involved in the fight itself. I enjoy these fights a lot, yes it's true we lose quite a few more ships, but as long as a fight isn't totally pointless we really like the engagements and hope to learn from them.

I'd like to thank the BoB members who come to our space and give us clean, fair fights, whichever corp they're in. I'm sure the majority of people in both alliances agree that whoever wins, we both enjoy them a great deal, shame about the lag though As for us losing more ships, its obviously because of BoB hax

Maybe our second titan finished at 13:02 today, maybe it didn't. Maybe I made up the mineral numbers, maybe ASCN is just playing EvE, you never know. DICE, Your CEO (s) have an EvE mail from me that I sent several days ago. Consider that ASCN's official stance on our battles, the rest doesnÆt matter. Thank you to the EvE community for your "praise" on completion of this project. It was a great goal for ASCN & AXE that I am proud we were able to pull off. This may be the first, but any Alliance that builds one of these suckers deserves just as much respect, they are a true pain in the butt. I think this topic has served its purpose.MODS, PLEASE LOCK THIS TOPIC. Thank you -CYVOK-
