Seems like I'm back to needing a voice convertor software thing again. I'm guessing voice changing isn't implemented. And seems like my current setup will payoff now, one rig for the eve client, using headphones for teamspeak. Second rig for Eve-radio, Excell, OGB, MSN and the likes. Having only a 15,4" monitor on my gaming rig, needs me to go fullscreen with 1600x1400 to fit the infomations I need while Eve-line, and that is getting too small a workspace, and upsizeing the fonts so it's readable is hopeless.. I'm rambling again sorry. Dual rigs to play is starting to be a must for us.

This is just my opinion, but I'd really prefer the name of the person speaking to show up on the top level screen rather than a change in an icon in the chat channel. I keep my chat box smallish to conserve space so I can see, so no more than 3 people actually show up in the member list. I'm thinking something like TS overlay type display, where the person's name shows up while they have the mic active.
I'd also like to see the voice comms volume controls separated from the rest of the volume controls, so you can increase volume of voice comms while reducing the volume of everything else.
I'd like to be able to 'join voice listen' on several channels, and 'join voice chat' on one. This would be helpful for the gang structures, so a wing commander could listen to the fleet ops channel, but speak on his wing's channel. He would hear both, talk on one. That way a fleet commander could give general instructions to a wing commander and trust the wing commander to give more specific instructions to his wing. (Ie, FC: 'go kill that EC gate camp', WC to Wing: 'interdictor, warp to 0 on the EC gate and drop a sphere, all others, warp to 60 and engage')
Lastly, would there be some way to buy a group subscription? Say, some member of the corp pays $20, and all members of that corp gain access to voice? That would make the payment structure a bit more like a TS server, where certain people pay for the whole group's access. I don't know if that would be used a whole lot, but that seems to be one big bone of contention as it's set up right now, so apparently it would. ---

A bump for a great thread, some great info, thanks Nate.
I agree that having the talk indicator more prominent is ESSENTIAL. No one scrolls through the member lists as it is, so having their face and name appear like when someone on your buddy list logs on/off would be ideal.
Any news on any of this CCP?

I was in a gang with about 7 of the 10 people on the voice client. The sound quality didn't seem as good as when there were just 2-4 people using it... maybe it's just me.
Only 1 person in the game had problems with a laggy or glitchy voice... and since the incident seems like such an issolated problem I think it's just him... Don't know why though... internet connection... pc... who knows... Anyways this is the FIRST time I've seen or heard of anyone lagging in voice chat. And I've probably had at least 30-40 people talking to me (not at once) in the Voicetest1 channel throughout the day.
I think my next test will be somewhat of a stress test on the number of users in the voice channel. See if I can get 30-40 people talking all at once... hmmm... we'll see...

I've gone back to the audio wizard a few times and it does seem to draw focus and no one else has reported problems with it... so it may have just been me. I'm going to take it off the issues list for now.

Agreed. If this is not the case, CCP can very well scratch the whole voice comms idea, and not into recycle bin
EDIT: How people use mouse for the mic? I mean, left and right buttons are used ingame, only way to use mouse is the 5 button mouses like Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer.
Nate - are you saying everyone you know has such mouse? or somehow people assign mic to left/right buttons? In which case I would love to know how, while keeping eve functionality etc. ------------------ Save Tranquility! |

The scroll-wheel can be used as a button if you press down on it. That is how nearly everyone I know has their voice key setup. ---

Most mice have center buttons now days... the scroll things... most click down... that's what I use... but yeah... I do see a lot of people with insane mice and insane keyboards. But even a $5 dollar mouse with a scolly thing can do it...

Has this been tested with any low bandwidth connections such as dialup?
This wouldn't be any use to me if this lags, when I can get TS to work decently on my connection.

I've wanted to test out the Voice com's for such a long time now! It's a darn shame that my account was inactive during that time... *Hint hint, wink wink*
But on a serious note, this Voice Com's system, once stable, will be the best "Player interaction" system ever introduced by CCP. I've always been a fan of Voice Com's programs, for the one reason most other people do. I get to speak with new people everyday (If new people joined). It allows me to meet new people get involved in activities more that normal and things such as this.
Typing now-days, just dont cut the cake, when you have programs like Ventrilo and Teamspeak out there. What you can typ in 2 mins can be said in 30 seconds over VOIP.
Keep up the good work CCP. Looking forward to all this stuff.

In theory no one would be joined audio on 2 clients... because most people would only have 1 audio account... so This sounds like a reasonable thing to happen. But can you join audio on 1 client and have your talk button work while in the other client (which isn't joined audio)...?

Added Feature/Possible Bug: The ability to voice join a chat channel and then close the chat and say voice joined. This could be a bug... but I like it because it allows the ability to unclutter your chats or something and still be talking to the people in that chat...

It's not too bad having Voice Chat on the keyboard. I bet that's where most people have their voice binds already.
Sorta wish the whole game could be played with the keyboard, to be honest...
Everyone I know binds chat to mouse... it's just easier and doesn't take up the important keyboard binds.
-NateÖ
Everyone I know binds voice com to LEFT SHIFT or TAB, TAB being a very small minority.
I had voice bound to mouse back in the days. Got fed up with it because it became harder navigating the mouse and talking at the same time. - Am I in the coolest alliance or what? |

I use the microsoft sidewinder voice command with TS and it works fine no need for any mouse or keyboard binding use the talk button on the dial of the sidewinder itself. I hope I can use it somehow when this voice chat goes live but I don`t think it will work

Few things whish are important to me: - it must work when I Alt-Tab to another app, very often I work at something (I am programmer) but listening to my corpmates at once - it can't crash with EVE client - it must cost not much than 2$ per month It seems the only way is to make it is to code it as a seperate application with some sort of connection with EVE client.

Edited by: Nate D on 08/11/2006 12:15:22 I am currently in a chat with 90 something people in it called TESTVIVOX Come join the fun if you get on SISI!
Currently experiancing a ton of echoing and open mic-ness... This is caused by people who have their keybinding set to something like Ctr-Ctr, or alt-alt or something like that... I'm going to add that to the list of bugs and report it as a bug. Before I thought it could serve a cool purpose keeping your mic open for something... but now... I think it's just a bug.
It still sounds Crystal clear and lag free! Cudos to CCP!

Personally I see no point in doing in-game voice chat. There are too many disadvantages, plus you have to pay for it, which instantly dooms it to failure.
Also, I would like something I use in EVE to NOT be made by CCP.

This is some stuff that CCP is currently working on for the voice chat.

Also I tried the moderation tool "Mute" and it only works for text chat not voice chat. I'm going to bug report that one as well.

This feature sounds great! but my only concern is for people who don't want their locations knows... like what if you're a deplomacy guy... would you want your enemy to know where you are while you're trying to work out a peace deal? This could limit who you choose to talk to... I'm not real sure of a way around this... anyone see any way?

New Tech zomg?!
Ventrilo!
Features!!!eleven!:
INSTANT built in lag-free chat. While in laggy battles and whatnot your voice and the voices of others can still be heard loud and clear.
Talking indicator. The talking indicator is a bit small and there is NO 5 second delay between when someone starts talking and when their indicator lights up, IT IS INSTANT. and most ppl play in window mode ftw so we can see who is talking whtether it be gang lead or some miner who ventured to the wrong channel, as well as to look at graphic material on the net.
Gang leader talk...if youre not gang leader or helping command and youre in a real op, youre not talking anyway, youre listening. useless feature of a useless spending of developemental resources.
Informative sounds! 'player has joined/left server/channel'... genius?!
voice joining? where's my voice activated mouse? clicking is WAY too hard i think we need to invent a way for me to tell my computer what to do. sounds like a completely necessary investment doesnt it?
lacks 1/3 of the amount of things the version ccp is working on lacks.
no issues
no bugs...
so why is ccp spending time on something we already have a program for that is in fact better, bug free, and popular amongst anyone who plays an mmo or shooter?
