I love to play with the sound on in eve but I have to turn it off on the esc menu because of the lag it generates in battle. Will the vox system work with the game sounds turned off? ================================================

I keep hearing people complain that vent/TS is better/cheaper than the proposed embedded voice channels...
You're missing the point.
Here's a point-by-point comparason between the three:
Cost - The proposed in-game system is on a per-user basis and costs about 80 cents per user per month. Vent and TS require a single person to rent a site at a cost of about 40 cents per person. Assuming you have a modest account of 100 people, that's $480 per year one person will have to pay to keep the vent/TS cahnnel open. Compare this to the $10 per year for Vivox. People seem to be under the false impression that vent/TS are free... as someone who has a 250-slot account on both vent and TS, I can assure $2000/year isn't the same as "free".
Ease of use - This is perhaps the biggest thing Vivox has going for it. You don't have to constantly swap between your game and the vent/TS window to see what's going on. Everything is on the game screen.
Game-specific features - The problems Vivox has can be easily addressed by CCP, and I expect it to get even better as the game ages. Things like having the icon and name of the person speaking appear at the top of the screen could be quickly and easily added at a later date. Ventrillo and Teamspeak, on the other hand, have to remain "generic". This means they have to be able to work with every game, which further means they will never implement features that are game-specific.
Longevity - Whether you like it or not, admit it or not, whine about it or not, Ventrillo and Teamspeak's days are numbered. Because more and more MMO games are being written to be "console friendly" to take advantage of the exploding console markets, you will see a growing trend of embedded voicecom in the source codes... and people are simply going to use the available in-game channels as opposed to the third-party services. This will result in more and more companies developing embedded voicecoms to stay competitive, which will result in less demand for the third-party services, ect... The end result will be the extinction of third-party voicecom services like Ventrillo and Teamspeak. CCP is simply being pro-active about this. They are working on it now instead of having to play "catch up" at a later date.

Would like to test Vivox, but I can't get into it at all. All I get is a bunch of "Error logging into voice chat please try again" messages.
DX is fully up to date, and I've even repatched from Tranq client.
I'm putting in a bug report with attached log server info as well as this post.

It seems that they've anticipated this from players and have somehow disconnected the EVE sounds from the voice sounds. The down side to this is that there's currently no way to control the sounds from Vivox.

The Error's don't mean anything... forget they exist. Often times the first time you login and join audio after patching the client you will have to relog before your join audio works properly. Try reloging and you should be set.

Better than me! I can't even play the game because of this bloody thing, cant test anything because (from what the log says) Vivox is causing my game to crash within like 5 seconds of being in the station. Says something like "Logging into Vivox" or somethin along those lines then EvE just vanishes. ------------ Peregrinus Amarria

erm 100 times 10 is alot more than $480! all i want is it to be priced competively with theses programs bearing in mind we alrdy pay for the game! TS is completely seperate to eve and can be used for may oter things

This is from a UK perspective.
Looking at the prices of Teamspeak hosts in the UK (I took the first five on google UK search) I found the following prices per person per month (best value package): 40p, 30p, 42.5p, 62.5p, 28p
That is an average of 40.6p per person per month, Vivox works out at 43.6p per month, I for one am quite happy to pay 3p more per month to gain access to the in-game VoIP management features.
(please note this was an very poor scientific experiment, I have not taken into account the other features offered by TS2 hosts or vent hosting.) --

Im sure this was said, but I dont want to read 4 more pages on this, and a repeat will be good. If the devs decide to make this something you can use in local as well, I would very much like to have an option to turn off the voice chat. I do not want to hear some 12 year old kid making fart sounds into his mic.

You must manually turn on voice chat in a channel anyways so this is a non-issue.

Wait - you need to pay for this service? :( I had assumed CCP were paying for this service, and then letting all EVE subscribers use it for no additional cost.
I think the main difference to a TS2 / Vent server is that only one person pays for the server, compared to Vivox where everyone who wants to talk has to pay. I don't think most people I know who play EVE is going to do so.

The bug: The first time that you log and join audio you must relog before your voice chat works.
Has been fixed. Now when you log into sisi one of the first thing that the game does is create your voice account.

Nate would you list in the OP the features and fixes and things that need to be done soo we have a smooth transition.
A simple user manual would make the non believers aware of the simplicity. The hardest thing I had to do was explain short cut creation.

OK... That's easy enough I'll make a tutorial for use of voice chat features and post it online in about a half hour.
ALSO the bug:
Binding talk to the same keys like Ctr-Ctr makes your mic a constant on.
Seems to be fixed...
I've also added the widly known bug: Vivox blows up Vista.

Yes... it's not caused by "lag"... but you're right... I don't know much more about it but the devs are aware and they don't seem to be too troubled with it... it may be because we're not using Vivox's talk servers. /me shrugs...

Nate its funny to see people complain that $10 a year is an outrageous price then they go buy a new game for $50 and play it once or they buy a console for $600.

Whatever you're into I guess... I only play MMOs now so... Consoles aren't really my thing anymore... But I love Halo!
I've subscribed to just about every MMO for atleast a month to try them out... but EVE's the best... hands down. I'm just surprized that I didn't bring up the 150k people (-alts) that you could talk to... vs. a TS or a Vent server...

No harm meant... like the bottom of the OP says... $10 a year... sorry It wasn't clear... I'll bold it or something...
My parent's payed the first few months that I played EVE so I understand! And then the Ice Cream store came around... and free ice cream is a good incentive to get people to work there... Oh... and being payed... Hmmm... and back to my parents... yeah... uh... College really made them stop paying for stuff... I don't know why?
But dude... when it comes down to it... it's an extra 84ó a month... I'm sure you might be able to sweet talk them just a bit!

Edited by: Elaron on 17/11/2006 13:14:32 I'm disinclined to shell out for it unless I can actually get it to work. Two nights I have tried it, across two versions of the client, and nothing.
Some more documentation from CCP about how it works and transmits the voice and login information would help with troubleshooting - after all, I can't even reliably see who is in voice coms, even after relogging, completely nuking my cache directory (yes, prefs and all), leaving and rejoining the channel etc.
I really don't want to have to start digging around with packet analysers. I do enough of that at work.

I think having integrated voice comm is great. Not having to use an external program, having to deal with user setup/passwords etc is good. Also it can be integrated nicely into Eve.
However the big problem is that it require you to have an optional subscription. If not everyone in a corp or alliance have it it will be pretty useless. $10/year is not much IMO but many don't want to pay that or even having to mess with their subscriptions.
It would have been better if CCP just included it and increased the subscription rate (probably would not have to pay $10 if every eve account pay)

ya they should just work it like, any other voice coms, the host has to pay for a server, however, they shoulds offer a limited fee service, for people sycxh as like what he said, not all people will have it ther for a free limited account will be nice. ___________________

I wouldn't mind them adding 84ó - $1 a month to the subscription costs... I havn't heard anyone gripe about the idea and it's been suggested several times. And that way people paying with GTCs could use voice comms as well. I wonder what the general concensus would be?
