They could go even lower considering a few things. - Most people aren't going to use it anyway so bandwidth isn't going to be used on 30k players at one time, something much less, but yes much more than if you individualized - They would be getting $.80 more out of 100,000 players rather than $.80 on 10k players (an estimate of 10% of the community paying for this feature was used) --- Nytemaster

What bases do you believe that if everyone had this feature that they wouldn't use it?
Anyways... here's
How to: Split audio for USB headset users!
You can play voice chat back separately from the rest of the game audio (i.e., you can use a USB headset to hear chat while you hear the rest of the game audio on the main speakers). To do this first make sure the EVE application is not running and that all sound devices are properly plugged in, and then:
1. Open the Sounds and Audio Devices function within your Windows Control Panel. 2. In the Audio tab select the primary input and output audio devices from the drop down list. If you are using a USB audio device make sure it has been recognized by Windows and shows in the drop down list.
3. Open the Volume tab and make sure that the Mute box is not checked and Device volume is set where you want it. 4. In the Audio tab uncheck the ôUse only default audio devicesö check box. 5. In the Voice tab configure ôVoice playbackö and ôVoice recordingö to point to the secondary audio device. 6. (Optional) In the Voice tab select ôTest hardwareö to open the Sound Hardware Test Wizard and use the wizard to further tune voice playback and recording.
7. Finally, go to the Sounds tab and play the system sounds to make sure you can still hear them through the main speakers.
Note standard EVE system notifications like ôDocking requestedö will also be played back through this secondary device.
Also on
Quality:
In terms of codec quality there are many factors sampling rate of the codec, compression ratio, frequency spread which all determine the quality under lab settings. Things like mic quality, sound card, ambient noise and data noise (generated through packet loss, 60 hz feedback from bad ground loops etc.) all impact voice on the net. In general any codec that is 32 kbs or better will give relatively the same audio quality to the vast majority of listeners.
Vivox uses a high bitrate and low compression which puts less stress on your processor and that's why it performs so well under client lag.

Originally by: Khetchi I keep hearing people complain that vent/TS is better/cheaper than the proposed embedded voice channels...
You're missing the point.
Here's a point-by-point comparason between the three:
Cost - The proposed in-game system is on a per-user basis and costs about 80 cents per user per month. Vent and TS require a single person to rent a site at a cost of about 40 cents per person. Assuming you have a modest account of 100 people, that's $480 per year one person will have to pay to keep the vent/TS cahnnel open. Compare this to the $10 per year for Vivox. People seem to be under the false impression that vent/TS are free... as someone who has a 250-slot account on both vent and TS, I can assure $2000/year isn't the same as "free".
Ease of use - This is perhaps the biggest thing Vivox has going for it. You don't have to constantly swap between your game and the vent/TS window to see what's going on. Everything is on the game screen.
[rant] Firstly, you can host your own Teamspeak server for free if you have DSL (I use to host one). Secondly you can download a nifty little Teamspeak addon called Teamspeak Overlay or setup a ingame website to work with Teamspeak. Teamspeak overlay works almost exatly like frapz working with the DX engine and sticking the images over the game. [/rant] |

TS Overlay sometimes disapears after you alt tab... kind of annoying. I'd like the "who's talking" indicator to be just like TS Overlay though it's very nice.

Aren't you still paying for the server though and the bandwidth? Yeah I could set up a server but I'm not sure my 3mbps DSL bandwidth could *reliably* support a 100+ Teamspeak/Ventrillo gang.

You're Angry that I changed the title? On what bases of facts are you assuming that most eve players don't use USB headsets?
I have changed the title to deal with USB headsets and Splitting Audio due to the fact that people were talking about it earlier (Page 2) in this thread which you claim to have read.
There's a lot of things that integrated voice comms can do that out of game voice comms can't but if you don't see them by reading the OP then I won't bother trying to explain.
You seem to have Tourette's... I'm sorry that must suck. Seriously though... You are paying to use a service. It's just like the service that allows you to play eve which if I may remind you... you also pay for...

Silence...
Your mind clears...
As you look around all you can see is the desolate moon below. The vastness of space surrounds you, it's dark. Your scanner is empty and you feel safe. For once you've found a haven where no one knows of your existence.
A glimmer of sunlight stretches over the cratered moon. The feeling of seclusion fades as the warmth of your sun flows over your ship. You close your eyes and imagine being back home... at last...
Suddenly your comms *****le, you hear a faint voice. You turn on your long range scanners and probe for other ships in the area. As you search you come across a distress beacon not too far from your current location. There is a sign of life by the beacon. You set your ship to warp. Your ship enters warp...
As the walls of the warp tunnel collapse around you, flames from a wreckage catch your eye. A light on your control panel starts blinking as if someone is trying to contact you. You open a comm channel...
Silence...
The sun is now in full view and the light is blinding. You hear a frightening sound from your open comms channel. It sounds as if someone is gasping for air, as if someone is dying.
"Hello... is anyone there?" As you finish your question you hear a moan.
"Are you ok?" You ask. A cough is heard and a rattling voice shouts out "They come from the Sun!"
Your comms shut off and whoever was there before doesn't seem to be there now...
As your ship sits stagnant in space you look towards the sun pondering what you just heard.
Squinting in the brightness of the sun you make out an object. It seems to be a very large object and it's getting closer.
Another voice comm channel opens. The voice on the other end is deep and dreadful sounding.
"May God's almighty light clean your disease ridden kind from the face of existence!"
A blinding light fills every corner and every void of darkness that was there before. You feel your heart beating as you look down to find that there is only blinding light from where the moon once was... You have nothing to do now but wait...
And now your heart beats no more...
(At least you know how you died)
Voice Comms are Coming The new Era has begun.

I dont know if this has been mentioned. But I found that you can turn the master volume all the way down in the esc. menu and the voice lvl up and still hear people talk. All you get rid of is in game sounds, ie.. warping/docking etc... This is very nice for those who use multiple characters and for people who dont want to hear in game explosions, but rather hear the FC or whatever...

The ingame "Voice" sound control refers to Aurora's voice. Thw EVE sound controls don't affect the sound level of voice chat.

got exactly the same error message. It is also generated when right-clicking on most channelnames(except local channel).
-Local channel works fine when right clicking.
-Corp, alliance and public alliance channels generate an errormessage like the above. The error message is immediately put in front of the game screen(I play fullscreenmode), when clicking it away, the game continues.
this one is special: -TESTVIVOX channel generates the same errormessage as above, but the errormessage is not displayed on top of everything else, but is running in the background. The game totaly freezes up, taskswitching does not work at all. Only opening the taskmanager will make desktop, taskmanager and errormessage appear, making it clickable. After clicking away the errormessage, the game unfreezes and the game continues.

i bug reported it to just to make sure the devs are aware vivox doesnt apear to support windows 2000 even though eve is meant to.
i hope they dont break windows 2000 support just for voice chat that alot of people didnt want anyway.
btw local channel works fine for right clicking the tab because VIVOX isnt active for local , when you right click a channel tab your meant to get an option to join in voice chat for that channel ------------------------------------------ My opinions are my own and not that of the alliance I belong to. |

I support this feature, but with a few thoughts, most of which have already been voiced, but I thought I'd compile them:
Pricing Add $1 to the monthly sub fee, and make it available for all. This makes it available for all, as well as infinitely easier for players to arrange subscriptions etc Make it possible for a corp to pay for a "bulk" account for their members. This I think is CRUCIAL
Remove the ability to have an open mike. It's just not necessary. I've never heard anyone use it successfully, or well.
Fix/move the who's talking indicator
Make it possible to adjust sounds independently. Most players run with sound off. I don't want to have to turn on the lag-inducing Eve sounds just to use chat.

1. I like the idea of adding $1 to subscription and no one seems to be negative towards it... then again I don't see CCP doing this but I'm sure it's still up in the air.
2. The ability for an open mic was a bug and is now fixed.
3. I was told by the Dev responsible for developing the Voice stuff that he agreed that the talking indicator was hard to see and he'd like to see it more visable.
4. Voice sounds ARE independent from EVE sounds.

it makes no sense at all for an integrated sound system if it's not for EVERYONE to use... that way most won't bother to change from they're current voice system and vivox will just fade away into a minor adition
i can see the days where someone enter's a system and broadcasts to the whole system to hear "Your doom has arrived, relinquish you're weapons and you shall be spared your putty life's. Fight and we will take you're putrid remains from the red hot wreckage of your ship!"
reading that, and actually HEARING it while you're fleeing away from an enemy fleet has a totally different effect
mind games, constantly hearing "come out, come out wherever you are..." "you can run but you can't hide" while being chased upon...

i just LOOOVE the idea

Edited by: D''onryu Shoqui on 21/11/2006 13:42:29 it doesnt work on windows 2000 only XP , eve is meant to support both lets not force 10% of the eve subcribers or however many still use windows 2000 to pay for something they cant use.

Pricing Add $1 to the monthly sub fee, and make it available for all. This makes it available for all, as well as infinitely easier for players to arrange subscriptions etc
If these suggestions were implemented, vivox would be a vastly preferable solution to using vent or TS. Also the ability to have teired gangs on voice comms will be a huge plus. You can do this with TS currently but i hate the sound quality on TS.
But yeah please please please remove any ability to have an open mike. Voice activation never works the way you want it to and i dont need to hear people heavy-breathing in my ear while im trying to pew-pew.
