There's no sound in space.
Even taking the sounds you ship might make into consideration, you are suspended in a goo-filled pod, and all of your sensory input is managed by the ship's systems.
There should be nothing more than sounds indicating the activation/deactivation of modules, warp initiation/completion, enemies targeting/jamming/whatevering you, etc... Basically anything that already has a UI display.
Additionally, the sound engine should be designed so that it doesn't suddenly blast 110 dB white noise after a random period between 5 minutes and 2 hours of playtime, causing the player to throw an expensive pair of headphones against the wall. (this is what happens if I turn sound on, it happens with no other game or program... just sayin')

The space game with the best music had to be Star Control II, hands down. I luvs it!
I'm new to EVE so I think the sounds are still nice but I can certainly see areas where some improvement would be nice. One of the biggest ones that would be nice are audio warnings. The "you've been targeted" sound is pretty weak. When I'm in a scary place, I want to know when someone has me on target lock! When you are in a dogfight and splitting your attention, it would be nice to get a warning you can't miss.
It would also be nice to have ambient sounds in space. What would also be nice is if you could use that sound as a means of exploring your environment. With submarines, the ears are the boat's eyes. It'd be neat if you could hear a representation of the local electromagnetic spectrum. With computer networks, there has been work done to represent network states with sound patterns. You can "hear" when the network is off. It would be interesting if you had hidden drone bases that you could discover by hearing some binary bips over the radio, perhaps hear distant warp activity and that would be your clue to fire up the probes and locate the target.
There's certainly a lot of room for exploration here.

Aggreed. New soundtracks for the jukebox are very long overdue.
More importantly though, fix the ****ed sound system! Why does it cause so much lag? I just don't get it! I like the sound, it pains me to have to mute it every time I want to PvP or do a large mission........... -----------------------------------------------

the soundtracks need to be context-sensitive and scale/switch tempo to fit the situation.. instead of a static playlist.
I remember swg had this worked out pretty nicely when i played.
after being podded for example, maybe tone in a Deep Dirge for a few minutes before fading out to some ambient stuff again..
That sort of thing

Since most sounds are artificial, made by the ships computers to trigger the correct response in the minds of the pilots I'd like to see different 'soundtracks' being up for grabs.
Why not let me slide in my submariner soundtrack?

definately a big fat /SIGNED. biggest thing i want changed is for it to not lag like crazy every time i turn it on. better sound effects and positional audio would certainly be a reason to keep it on. a more dynamic soundtrack wouldnt be too bad either, but i dont think thats as big of a priority as the added lag. --- What I have shown you is reality. I remember when I was a noob ratting in my Tristan and you could hear the radio chatter of the rats if you got close enough to them. But I think they took it out a while back with some patch.
I like the EVE soundtrack so I don't want it replaced but adding regional and situational variety to the music would be really nice.

This should be a high priority imho. CCP stated the reason fro the graphics update inpart was immersion, well imho sound is extremely important part of the immersion, which is why i never play MP3's underneath my games. I like the moody music and the ingame sound fx. Eve defnitely needs a serious sound update, anyone who has played with a decent sound system in eve understands why i am sure :P

I think the worste part of the sound is its performance penalties. In no other game i've played before (not many since i began EVE ) have ever had such a penalty on performance as in EVE. Maybe since i have an independant sound card i may not notice as much as other players. The whole sound FX should be re-worked. I do like the powerful warp drive sound however. With a surround system really sounds intense. But then the other sounds lack alot of that. I suppose some extra musics could be put in as well, but i wouldn't replace them totally. I kinda like those musics, like a trademark in EVE. |

Yea, Sound can actually be a more contributing imersion factor than graphics at some points imo.

There are a lot of areas of improvement they could make in the sound subsystem, but two of them are top on my wish list.
1. Audit the code and adopt a more "standard" method of using the DirectX sound layer. EVE is the only game that reliably crashes my Audigy 2 drivers whenever anything else touches the sound device. Running a second copy and forgetting to turn sound off first is a guarenteed blue screen.
2. I suspect one of the culprits in the performance hit is the fact that all the game sound effects are in ogg containers. While ogg audio is (usually) better quality than mp3, it also seems to take more CPU horsepower to run. It might be worth handing the devs a few days to experiment with CPU benchmarking surround sound ogg format vs. multi-channel mp3's... just to see.
Beyond that, it would be nice to have seperate volume for music, sound effects (as in explosions, guns, etc), and the UI (beeps, clicks, the sexy computer voice).

I don't sign many (or any, before this one) of these feature petition threads, but what the hell. I got tired of the music after about a week, and the sound effects are yawntastically generic. They do the job but certainly don't add anything. And this is far from realistic science fiction anyways, so I have no trouble with sound in space. If this were real SF, we'd have a newtonian flight model, instead of flying through...what was it, motor oil?
Anyways, yes, better sounds, fix the sound engine so it doesn't lag the client, and immersive tunes please. ___________________________________

It's still there, just VERY VERY QUIET.
CONCORD has it's own chatter, too (ancient Earth aviation radio chatter, no less), and rouge drones get a suitably creepy backdrop.
Just be forewarned that listening to the CONCORD chatter at a gate is a guaranteed speaker explosion if someone warps through (it's really that quiet).

I'm completely in favor of this idea. I don't want to be put to sleep when I'm killing things. I only recently turned the music back on, and fairly quickly realized why I had it off in the first place. I'd like something a bit more upbeat.

Hey, CCP!
Can we get a new "Warp Drive Active..." chick? The current one is starting to sound a little annoyed and I think her promotion is overdue.
Besides!
You know as well as I do that this would be material for two if not three 15-page threads in General Discussion.

We just got a new female voice, let's not go over that again. I'm glad this thread came up because it wasn't but two days ago that I was thinking along these very lines. Wouldn't it be cool if EvE sounded great with booming guns etc. It feels like there is such a barrier between myself as a player and the EvE on my screen. I would love to be immersed in it audibly as well. ________________________________________________________________________________ "My once immaculate white pants are now stained from the weak and innocent. Having played Planetside, I LOVED the music even when it weren't that many tracks. Eve music is mostly uninspiring, exception maybe the shiva theme from the login screen.

I agree, the sounds in this game are cookie-cutter, I'm sorry to say. (but this game still rocks) I also have the issue where when my audio is turned on my FPS can drop by 10, sometimes a bit more, no other program has this issue on my machine.
Also could we get one more option. SFX Level.
We have Music, UI sound, and Voice in the audio menu. What if I want to hear the computer voice, the UI sounds so I can "hear" what I'm doing, but don't want to listen to myself warp all the time. Being able to hear your interface and or music would be great, if we could just turn down the SFX some times.

I've never noticed any sort of performance difference between sound on or off, regardless of where I am, what's on screen, or how many 100+ ships are shooting all at once.
Then again, the only sound I don't keep on is the jukebox, I got tired of it after a while.
I would like to know why, when you zoom out, gun sound effects get softer the further away you are, but missile explosions don't.

BRING BACK THE "WOOOOOSH" SOUND AND THE HUMMING SOUND AT THE GEMINI CLIENT LOGIN SCREEN. THANKS.
Not sure if the following section is allowed or not, if it aint i apologize and i'll remove it.
You can get the song out of the eve folder. Stellar Shadows its called (Ambient001 when you extract it). Think you had to use the EVE_Stuff_Extractor (can get it from evefiles) to pull them out of the eve folder on your computer. They end up in ogg format.
I listen to it often, just such a nice song :D First time i installed Eve back in Easter 2004 this music started playing on the login screen and before i knew it, an hour had passed just listening to it hehe.
