I have been playing for a few years, and I have yet to see any major improvements in sound (except for maybe voice comms).
The music got old fast, and I usually have the ambient music turned off. New music tied to being attacked, the aggression timer, different regions, being in an asteroid field, would be an excellent addition to EvE.
The sound effects need work too. Drones when they are launched sound like a hive of buzzing bees. They need to sound like small agile ships flying around, not bees. And I think all drones sound the same, the sound should change according to the size and race used.
Guns don't sound very powerful, and they are using the same sounds for many different guns. I even think citadel torpedos and rockets have the same launch sound! Guns should sound more "powerful" with more bass, and lasers need charging and discharging sounds to them, especially the larger ones. Explosions, especially the larger ones, need to be "meatier" and sound more convincing.
Engines are another issue. To my knowledge, a shuttle's engines make the same sound as a Carrier's engines! And all the races ships engines sound the same. An agile Interceptor should have a higher pitched, more "racy" sound to them, and gigantic Carriers and Titans should have very low pitched rumbles for engines, they should sound very large and powerful. Also, when you activate an afterburner, the sound seems to just get louder. It needs to have perhaps a change in pitch or some sort of "charging up" or "winding up" sound to it when its first activated. MWD should have an even larger sound effect, and change the engine sound much more dramatically.
The warp sounds DEFINITELY need work. They don't need to be so loud entering warp, and they need some sort of charging up sound as you are aligning to warp, and each class of ship should have a different sound for warping.
The sounds in EvE definitely need a large overhaul, along with the graphics.
I don't know what has been said up till now, and I don't care, because THIS GUY HAS IT RIGHT!! Much <3 for him!
Not to mention engine sounds..why is my Archon carrier sounding like a **** frigate pure engine wise??? WHYYYyyyy!? A BATTLESHIP sounds beafier then my carrier

If i start speak with someone of star wars there is a lot of sounds who come immediately like the famous light saber and also musics of the famous john williams. When i start speak with someone of eve , there is .... nothing to talk about sounds and musics :-/

It's too bad you didn't get your chance to ask this to the council at the fest, i'd certainly have liked to see it addressed. Of course I agree - and it's not just new sounds that need to be added (like some kind of variation in the launcher sound) but sounds being fixed. It's true that I disobey fleet commanders constantly by keeping my sounds switched ON during large battles, as I want to hear the epic battle. I am always disappointed however, when it degenerates into buggy clicks and pops instead of ambient battle sounds.
Sometimes ships that are 300km away from your camera drone will produce a sound like it's right next to you - and vice versa - ships you are 'looking at' will produce no sounds at all from their weapons, or strange quiet 'distant' sounds.
The cloaking-uncloaking sound has always been a favourite of mine, but since it's the same sound used when entering/exiting stargates it lacks that special feel to it that such an expensive module *should* produce.
And when a capital ship uses its jump drive, the sound is the same as a stargate being fired. Now that's just lazy. Seriously - I'd generate a nice and suitable sound right now for that if you guys'd let me.
Although, and this is addressed to people who are worried about this - there is a light on the horizon. At the fest CCP mentioned (and they've said this before namely in EON interviews) that once the graphics overhaul has been done and eve looks epic once again as it did on release - other glaring bugs will really stand out and will HAVE to be dealt with. At the time they were referring to things such as warping through planets and turrets shooting through everything - but I'd certainly wager they would have to look at sound as well. -omg-

A reply would be nice. Just a its on the drawing board or we're working on it as I write this would be nice. There are many good ideas here, and they should all be taken into account. Yall must have a couple of sound engineers on the team...

I would love to see the sound upgraded. I loved Earth and Beyond as the sound changed based on where you were and what you were doing. Background music can have a huge effect on immersion. Even some simple things would be great. Split out what you can enable and disable to a greater degree. I might hate the music but want the weapons. Put the sound files in a structure that allows easy replacement and use a common file format for the sounds. I also agree that engines and weapons should be way different based on size and type. If I fire off a huge cannon I should feel it shake my ship to the bone. An engine on a big ship should impart a sense of overwhelming power. These things help really bring you into the experience.
So consider me "signed" for the idea of more attention to sounds!

I feel very strongly about this, I must confess i was furious to see them boasting about " cool new ship graphics in Kali" that are completely irrivalant, unecessary and unwanted as most craft in eve appear as a little + or similar symbol in combat anyway and its nice to see people taking notice of game breaking issues like SOUND.
Going off and making pretty ships is the most retarded waste of resources on the go when the **** sound in game:
1. Sounds pretty crap as far as high tech weapons go when it actually doesnt cause you to lag up and have a critical CTD error.
2. Crashes about 60% of the subscribers base computors if audio isnt completely turned off in pvp or player missions with 20+ npcs in same deadspace.
CCP if u wanna give us a completed product FIX THE SOUND ISSUES IN EVE!!!
AC97, onboard sound, etc, it goes on and on fix it now!

make the bloody warp and gate sounds quieter, make tachs and meagbeams quieter, boost ac volume -.-
right now to hear my autocannons i have to play at a volume that makes amarr bs, warping and jumping deafening.
result = sound: off. ----------------

I totally agree with that, and it is one of the most important reason for me to use drones instead of guns. Well, the 250mm sounds interesting though. =]
I would really like the compression method for BGM to be higher. It's about 40-50kbps VBR OGG format, please make it at least 128kbps so it won't make me feel noisy while the music is being played out of my 5.1 speakers.
Personally, I love the music while warping into a deadspace, Especially the file named Caldari2 and Gallente2. =]

Make everything happening outside of your ship quiet.
Sound shouldn't travel in space. :P
As for music, winamp ftw. You get tired of repetetive soundtracks anyway. Waste of resources.

Edited by: Nardon on 19/11/2006 22:53:42 Edited by: Nardon on 19/11/2006 22:52:16 Since the "no sound in space" argument has come up again I got another idea. As sound is already computer generated for your pod pilot why not make it completely customizable(is that a word?). So everyone could create his own sound theme for trigger sounds like weapon fire, engaging warp and whatever. EVE should compile these sound themes either on startup or just once when you wish it to compile and use it afterwards. Of course you could trade these themes freely too.
It would and should not touch the music score issue though.
[edit:]of course CCP should provide a good default theme. So they aren't completely off the hook now! :)

As long as you made a soundtrack that changed according to your environment and situation I don't see a problem in making some really good ones. Try to think of a game where you actually turned of music, I know I can't think of a title on the top of my head. All other mmo's I've played, I played with music..

This is sooo signed.
I'm a sound fanatic, so I still play with sound. But 1) the crappy performance hit, 2) the lack of proper configuration options and 3) the non-working immersion really kill it for me.
Please, pleeeeease take a look at this, mkay? <3 --- WTS: Forum Signatures, 30mil a piece. Evemail me!

sound sound I WANT SOUND.
I mean it's pathethic, I had to extract the music from the stuff files just to listen to the music in winamp while I play ? Because the mixer in eve just plain sucks. You can't turn up the music without also turning up the warping sound.
Also sound is vital in small gang engagements. You know .. hearing that gate, hearing that falcon uncloaking, or the dringsss when you're target painted... it's usefull in my opinion.
And been in a medium fleet engagement lately. 30vs30. And forgot to take out the sound. I hade like ONE frame every 15 seconds ?????? Of course that everyone in gang made fun of me because ... I forgot to TURN OFF a feature like SOUND.

Ooh, what about region specific radio stations? That's probably asking a lot, but it'd be kind of cool to warp to a new region and have to select a new station to listen to.. Just a thought.

Its not just about esthethics, or immersion. Sound is a very important source of tactical information in almost any millitary vehicle made since the mid 20th century. Our ships should beep and whoop to tell us about the tactical environments they're in. <<<< No Boundaries, No Fences, Fly Free Or Die Trying >>>>

CORRECT the problem of lag !!! Sound take a lot of ressource ... I have disable since some years for play correctly. If you correct this problem => sound ON :)
Yes, a little refresh of the sound is a great idea ! (More important for my than graphic ...)
