/signed. After Kali, we need a new, less laggy sound engine, with new soundtracks, new and better sounds for everything, and the option to (GOD/CCP PLEASE) allow us play our MP3's ingame, instead of resorting to out-of-game players.
... or at least be able to turn off certain sections of the sound engine, and not just mute them.

Good music/effects makes the game that much more immersive. It should not be neglected.

/Massive signage, great topic.
Sound is so important... important to the extent that for many people, the quality of the sound effects makes the game 'look' better. I know that sounds completely ass backwards but it has actually been proven that the auditory experience effects the perception of peoples visual experience.
For bringing in composers from the outside, there is a great deal of talent out there... personal current favorite for when I'm playing Eve is stuff by Bear McCreary, the fellow responsible for Battlestar Galactica's music.
The sound effects need a big makeover. I know the Hybrids didn't get any love in the OP's post... but my 250mm's sound more powerful than my 425mm's. I actually really like the sound of the 250's; the 425's sound like a fart in the wind for the level of bang they dish out though. :(
I do like the stuff CCP is working on for 3D sound immersion currently, I hope we'll see some upgrades to the actual effects though.

Wow that game looked pretty awesome, good sounds to indeed. Love the sound of that constant beam :) Homeworld also had some good sound, or decent freespace.
Great sound in the battle. Also really like the way the frigate sized ships sound more like a sup'd up racer and the huge ships... sound huge, like a rumbling monstronsity waiting to dish out carnage to anything that comes within it's grasp.
I do realise that the sounds in this video have been tailored to it. The results though are what we are looking for. I can't knock the visuals at all... but try watching that video with the sound off, and you'll see that it doesn't 'look' nearly as good.

So there's three things that need adressing re EvE sound:
The technical aspect: the current sound engine is frackin' slow and makes the game lag on even the best of computers. This needs to be fixed before any other concerns can be adressed.
The tactical aspect: the current use of sound leaves out a whole slew of critically important sound queues. The only warning your ship gives is when its too late: 'the ship is out of control' The esthetic aspect: many of the current sounds are ugly, or lack punch. Big guns that shoot shells the size of volkswagens sound like a cat's fart.

It would also be cool if the jukebox would actually play the song I want it to play, I remeber that while running a mission as soon as I activated the acceleration gate the jukebox showed me that it was playing "Red Glowing Dust", after the song ended i doble click on it on the play list and it played something else, I tried every song on the play list and it never played that song again, heh. ---------------- Game The World.

Deadspace tracks are separate from normal. They don't show up in the jukebox.
Which is a shame. I would love to hear them more often.

Eve music is actually quite ok imo. Its one of the things that drew me in initially, those mimimal hypnothising bits of sound. Too bad there's this horrible warp effect to tear the quiet of space completely to pieces, and the rather underwhelming sound effects in general. WTB: Gold bar for this topic (IE dev acknowledgement of problems)

YES YES YES.
Now that's the powerful sound of ships and weapons. The heat effects from exaust were very cool. I also like how you can see the shields when they're hit. But I don't want to get off topic by graphics.
And I know the video is doctored up a bit for dramatic purposes, but I can only hope that EVE sounds and looks like that at the end of Kali. That's the bullseye. ________________________________________________________________________________ "My once immaculate white pants are now stained from the weak and innocent. I don't wear red." |

Somewhere in the not too distant future it will... what with the new dx9 client, and the dx10 one a little further down the line. But this thread isnt about spiffy looks, nor is it about how easily a thread falls down to page 3. Its about sound, and why the guns sound like weak toys, the warp like a jet taking off and the shields breaking like.. nothing at all <<<< No Boundaries, No Fences, Fly Free Or Die Trying >>>>

This should have been addressed more at Fanfest TBH. It's great that we are getting VoIP but let's get some new music and found effects too!

Yes, sound has a very important role in making people feel immersed in the game. Improve the sounds and you improve the fun factor too. The sound right now isnt very good, and I dont think ccp think it is either. Guess its on "the list" somewhere. :)

Hell, hire an outside team to take this on. This is an important aspect of the game guys.
Imagine this game with the graphics it has coming AND an awesome sound base to it...

CCP, being the great guys they are, are very open in their plans and such. But no matter how many times I pore over the in development and drawingboard sections, theres not a peep on sound. So ah.. Meh. <<<< No Boundaries, No Fences, Fly Free Or Die Trying >>>>

I could see this being fun in empire, while trading, mining, exploring or anything else. When I don't want to be arsed with anything else. But otherwise I have eve radio/our corps radio or vent.
It is a nice plus but not a MUST, and I think there is a lot of other things that need to be done before it.
But good luck with your project, I wouldn't mind it being implemented in the future.

Completely agree, i was frequently crashing due to some AC97 "known" driver issue that wasnt mentioned during the tutorial, whilst ive disabled it and got a sound card now as soon as i start pvping my PC lags up like a biatch and get a crit error due to some issue i cant get to the bottom off..........
suffice to say if i disable audio completely the game runs fine and i never lag even during fleet battles, but by having to disable sound it completely removes the atmosphere from the game for me.

That was amazing... We need sounds like that, the high-pitched whine of an interceptor using a mwd, the deep explosions, rapid firing guns. I sure hope some devs read this topic and see that video.

'But otherwise I have eve radio/our corps radio or vent'
This is not just about pretty sounds to liven up the miners' life (tho that too is very important). It is about very important tactical queues, such as the fact that you are being scrambled, somebody trying to target/jam you, your ship being in various states of disrepair. That sort of thing. We cant always have our eyes glued to the meatball to know the health of our ships. Our ships should tell us about those things even when we are browsing the market or are telling our gf's why we cant do the dishes just right now. These sort of sounds should not interfere with voice comms, but should supplement them in no small way. <<<< No Boundaries, No Fences, Fly Free Or Die Trying >>>>

RealX seems to only visit the forum when there's a thread for patting his belly.
The other time he's probably busy designing sounds, the sound engine and playing around with Aura. --*=*=*--
The cause for this is not yet known, but we do have a possible fix in testing. by Sharkbait | 2006.09.20 |

Hoping this will be addressed within the next decade, I agree with everything said in this thread. It's really a shame, because with the right sounds, the game could become that much more immersive.

Good audio design is a key part of the overall experience. It's what takes the game from "That was fun" to "That was ******* awesome!" Play something like Gears of War with the sound off. It's still fun, it still looks good, but it doesn't make you want to take cover behind the coffee table.
This is the only MMO (or epic-scaled single player game) I've played where turning the sound off doesn't make me miss it, and that's a terrible shame. As that video someone posted earlier shows, Eve is precisely the kind of game where the audio is an opportunity to knock our socks off.
So get that audio FX house on the phone already, will ya'?
