Edited by: Tachy on 03/01/2007 19:58:39 Will Tranquility finally get the multihoming feature that's been one of the main reasons for the move from Simin to Sublevel3 from early last year?
Are the session issues for the forum software finally fixed for good?
Will the test server, the portrait rendering rig and the forum sserver die again shortly after the patch? (SCNR) --*=*=*--
The cause for this is not yet known, but we do have a possible fix in testing. by Sharkbait | 2006.09.20 |

Originally by: kieron In regards to those voicing concerns about the server being available after the infrastructure upgrade and before the end of the scheduled downtime, they have been noted. If there is a large enough response from the community, I will have the operations team take TQ down for the entire duration of the upgrade and checks. In that case, EVE will be unavailable for the full 24 hours.

Originally by: defiler Seriously, what's so bad with bringing a potentially unstable cluster online if the users are aware of what might happen if they log in?
Why does everyone assume every user even bothers to read the news items (or even the notes on the login screen for that matter)? What about people that were on vacation for the holidays and come back right after the 12 hours expected downtime, logs in, and suddenly finds out his account gets deleted or some bad thing like that?
You can't assume everyone will know what's going on. I'm a project manager at a software company, and if I found out that some of my developers knew they wrote a potentially disastrous application if used incorrectly and assumed people would not use it incorrectly, they would be fired.
Moral of the story: Don't give people the chance to 'be at risk' especially when it's within your power to prevent it.
On a side note, people are going to complain about the downtime no matter how long it is. Someone that's going to protest over a 24 hour downtime is also going to complain about a 12 hour downtime -- and imagine the things they'll complain about if they log on after that 12 hours and something bad happens? Oh yeah, even more complaining and petitions.

Edited by: Jackie Fisher on 04/01/2007 09:36:18 Edited by: Jackie Fisher on 04/01/2007 09:35:28 I do feel that a better job could be done of making users aware of downtimes. Front page news on this site refers to Decembers patch, client news top item (last night) was about key loggers - too easy to miss the downtime as this was down the news items list.
Last patch in December I missed the downtime announcement even though I checked the devel blog less than 24 hours before it happened.
I appreciate more notice is not always possible but keeping the homepage news up to date downtime wise and more prominent flagging in the client would be a big help. Caldari Navy Support |

Originally by: kieron On Thursday, 4 January, Tranquility will undergo an extended 24 hour downtime for external network infrastructure changes and database server software updates. We do not expect the changes and upgrade to exceed 12 hours and hope to allow connections to Tranquility sooner; however we cannot guarantee network stability or connectivity until after the end of the scheduled downtime.
Users that log in before the end of the scheduled downtime will be playing 'at risk' and will not be reimbursed for losses incurred by upgrade related issues.
We apologize for the inconvenience the extended downtime will cause for some members of the community and encourage training a long duration skill.
Will we be notified when the DT is over? I dont want to log in 'at risk' if the server is up and im not supposed to log on. But if everything is done early, i wont to be notified so i kmonw im not 'at risk'.
I don't have a problem with authority... ...as long as it doesn't get in my way. |

Dont ever start making decisions because a few people whine if you dont feel its the right decision yourselfs.
In this case, I think players are probably not mature enough to not file petitions in the first 12 hours, which means you will get some petitions you will have to deny.
So I dont know... maybe its better to play it safe, just to avoid the petition makers causing trouble. But its your call.

The issue is not about the server coming back up before the 24 hour period, the issue is about bringing it back up before you consider it to be stable enough for reimbursement claims to be valid. If that can't be done in less than 24 hours, I would personally not even consider to bring it back up before that.

You may log into Tranquility, the chances of a disconnect due to the need to reboot the server for a network infrastructure setting fix are low and if a change needs to be made, notification will be made.
However, there are staff working in the datacenter on other parts of EVE, so there is a possibility of a power switch being bumped, power cable being accidently disconnected, etc.
When the server team is done for the night, myself or one of the server team will pass along the "All is clear, users are no longer playing 'at risk'" notification.

"proxy not connected to sol servers"
I'm assuming there's a little left to be done (from NZ, in case it matters).

sol server means someone has disconnected the server from the outside world.
i think CCP are still understaffed tbh why they just havent said 70% of our staff are on hoilidays we should have waited until january to deploy revelations bla bla bla i dont know would have given them a more credible timeline and defense to work with instea of lagging everyone out and probably loosing a lot of long term players sure new ones are incoming but they are loosing valuable PR and personalities.

The server team is looking into the last couple of server reboots. However, the team was able to perform the maintenance tasks that normally take place during the daily server downtime. TQ will not undergo its daily downtime on Friday, 05 January, but will be taken down for maintenance on Saturday, 06 January as normal.

Just out of curiosity.... did CCP give a skillpoint boost? I gained nearly 15+ hrs training to a skill that I was training BEFORE the DT started. I changed skills lastnight when TQ first came back up. So my new skill trained overnight as expected but also my old skill too....
Not complaining mind you :-D

Fundamentals of business, my friend. Take YOUR customer base, and only improve your product or service without offering anything new, and see how quickly your business grows. The international company I work for is continually offering new products and services to its clients all over the world, just like EVE. And now, for the first time in the 20 years it has been in business, they are finally spending over $1.8 billion (or somewhere in that range) to remodel and refit all of their locations worldwide to standardize how they do business. What this means to you, is that yes, CCP shoves bugs that have been around for years under the rug, but as an intelligent business decision, they have decided that these bugs are less significant to the game than offering new content. That's the fundamentals of business... know where your weaknesses are, but realize that not all weaknesses can be overcome, so instead, offer something new that makes the weakness less prominent.
Secondly, your quote about...
Originally by: Shemar Having thousands of paying customers beta test CCPs experiments does not count as a 'free upgrade'.
Have you ever been on the test server? There are plenty of times where that's more fun than playing on the main server! Dude... battleships for 100 isk and all the fittings you could ever ask for? And just think... somewhere, there's a 10/10 plex just for you!
Lastly, to all the players whining about "I've lost 3 days in the last 2 months so I want reimbursed my $1.50..."
Get. A. Life. If your life revolves around Eve that badly, take your computer, turn it off, disconnect all cords and wires from the back, open up your closest window, and chuck it as far and as hard as you can out said window. MMO's are addictive, yes, but have any of you ever heard the horror stories of marraiges broken up, lives ruined, jobs lost, and so forth, because of an online game? Go out! Leave the house! Go do something other than waste your lives away on a computer game! Don't end up like kieron or Oveur in this picture... Get out for once! --- Time to update my sig... |

You can't deploy a client patch at the same time as a server patch. Well, you could, but it's a horribly bad idea.
