While I am, just like everyone else, happy about all the new combat changes, coming POS infrastructure and speed initiative and even the PvE changes that are coming at some point I cannot ... help but keep wondering when something worthwhile is coming for mining people.
There are countless dev posts and I heard only one thing that might be interesting for miners. And then maybe. The ORE capital. But other then that, where exactly can a miner grow? The common arguement is that combat people can literally train for years and miners .. for significantly less time before they hit the roof of absolutely maximum.
Presumably one should see mining not as a profession but merely as part of a profession that ought to be complimented by other things such as production. The eventual question remains though: what can the ultimate miner train for in the end? When you have accomplished T2 mining drones, level 5 interfacing, level 5 exhumer, T2 crystals and many implants .. what more can you do? Even the drone rigs add perhaps but a day or two training.
After that, a dedicated miner is simply done training. I know very, very few combat pilots who are done with the same amount of SP.
What is a dedicated miner to do?

Do something different for a change instead of watching some miners suck a roid and hauling the ore. Sorry, I didn't want to post and keep you in peace, but I just can't get it how someone wants to be nothing else, than a miner for months and years.

Oh, calm both of you. We all have our money maker. I am the money maker. And besides, I haven't seen ships being build out of janitors yet. Something or someone has to pay for the fun.
Some like ratting for a bit of money to pvp. Others do mining to get money and ships for pvp.

agreed, its a perfectley valid question, lots of people have a industrial char and a combat char.
i think the only light at the end of the tunnel for bored miners will be the Ore capital, i just hope for the poor miners that it doesent require the capital ships skillbook, 380m for a skillbook is one of the stupidest isk sinks in the game.
i actuley think it would be better for ccp to add 3 higher tier / T2 industrial ships to the game.
- mini freighter that moves and alligns a LOT faster with half the cargo space.
- capital mineing ship, basicley a T3 exhumer.
- mobile refineing platform that can hold a crapload of minerals in an onboard silo and jump drive them beck to base.
yeah we can dream

The ORE Industry ship comes to mind, but you're correct, there is lots of room for improvement. I'd suggets currently, if you are adventurous, gas cloud harvesting? You could also use Exploration for better asteroid belts.
The bigger improvements will be possible when we move the asteroid belts to the same system as exploration and complexes, allowing us to make bigger, more interesting and less predictive belts.

Sounds interesting. Not being a miner myself it does hold out a glimmer fo hope for those that enjoy it. I'm guessing this is not the only expansion on Exploration your looking at though Oveur? It has a great many possibilities in my mind. -------------

But how will this effect belt ratting as a profession. Right now you need to churn through a LOT of belt to make isk if you aren't in 0.0. Should make low sec mining a little safer though. Now the pirates will need to scan you down where ever you are. I just worry that mining will become too much trouble unless there is a new, easy to use, probe given out. And by easy to use, I mean launched from your cargo hold. Well, I can always add a scanning ship to a GSC in my my iteron. But how will the mining noobs know how to do this?

Well i used to be a miner, and when the Barges came out i was one of the first to get me one of them sweet Covetors and modulated stripminer II's, but after a while i got tired of it, there wasn't much else to do but sit in the belts, activate lasers on roids and... watch... and yawn... the occational beltrat was quickly dispatched by my wing of T2 medium drones.
The only real challenge was mining in low sec, either solo or in a group, waiting for the inevitable piwate(s) comming into system and making the choice of staying in belt hoping the guy was only passing through, warping back to station to wait for him to leave or warping back to station to get your own WTFPWNBBQ machine and go to battle.
Actually of late i've been thinking again about perhaps picking up my old proffession if only to have a break from missionrunning and the other stuff i do.
We'll see i guess... Resized tag... again... hope this pleases the tag ninjas from ccp... again :p

I agree 100%... i'm an "almost" maxed miner (still need some refining skills) And it is just damn annoying to hit a brick wall when everyone else can train their entire life against 1 specialization.
IMO Miners need more bonus skills like combat has, like the sharpshooting and all that, why not introduce more "less cycle time" and "more ore pr cycle" and maybe some more different things?
I can say that gas mining is totally not worth it!, its better to just mine bistot, crokite and arkanor. :/
Also... we need more Hulk BPO's out there. A hulk is seriously overrated and 600 mil a piece is almost the same as a damn carrier. :o If you dont see the difference then you're less than smart.
Maybe its an idea to make "hauler" drones aswell, that can automaticly pick up stuff from a can and move it to a station?

Frankly, I'm all for removing all plexes (except the noob-plexes) from the game all together and replace them with exploration plexes.
It'll lead for less sploits and harvesting and a more interactive game for the player. Sure there are some problems with exploration now, but none that can't be resolved rather quickly.
The big alliances will complain though, with exploration they will actually have to work for their isk. -- Drone users unite! Support drone whinage |

Once you have most of the mining skills you have something huge under your belt that a lot of people won't take the time to train. Just leave it at that. The rest of the mining is in technique and experience. If people wanna spend 3 minutes on a rock with 5 ore left then that puts you ahead of the game when you learn to use a scanner. The same for knowing which systems to strip clean, or which belts have the omber clumps or which missions you can mine out for the most profit. There's not too much that is bad about maxing on mining yeild as "quick" as we do, leaves a lot more time for training all the skills you'll need eventually when you do lvl 3-4 missions or need to kick some guy's ass who just blew up your covetor and got a small armor rep and 2 hobgoblins as a reward...

Have you seen the prices of the gas cloud skill and module - it's an INSANE price for something u find very few of in exploration
(beleave me I have been exploring for ages and come in contact with 2 clouds only)
and I don't know if I would want to fly around 0.0 looking for these things with a 700mil module fitted to my ship thanks. (litle point in doing it in empire tbh)

I think if they added to many new skills and ships it could imbalance the market as Mining would become too easy and fast. Mineral prices would drop like a rock.
CCP is on the right track by putting in things like gas clouds and explorable belts. I think that is the direction they should concentrate on and improve.

The things I would like to see are system wide belts, mining capital ships and fatter roid respawns, since my alt trained up mining director etc and plugged inthe foreman mindlink them roids pop too damn quick, I actually have to pay attention these days - and there was me getting into my daughters DS Lite.
I like the idea of integrating mining with exploration - look forward to seeing how that pans out

I don't understand why people hate on miners? So what I like to sit and mine on roids while I browse the forums? I make great ISK and it funds my ships for combat. I am a miner first and combat pilot second however. The only way to get 100% refining is have a lot of standing at the station you refine at. That means grinding missions to raise your standing. Plus fighting is fun.
But my plan is to be maxed in mining and then move on to production. I hope to be able to build whatever my corp needs and fund our war efforts.
But I do agree a mining capitol ship would be awesome. And hauling drones that can warp to the station in system so having a hauler friend or alt isn't required.
Because right now with decent mining skills GSC don't hold near enough and the barge's holds don't hold near enough to have solo mining really viable. They both fill up to quick.
We either need a much bigger hold on our ships, or a bigger secure can. Or hauling drones or a capitol ore ship. ======================================== Production Assistant of APEX Unlimited Pilot of the ACV Digger (Retriever) ACV Respite (Carcacel)

I dont see what this will do to combat macros, and I certainly see it being a huge time/money sink if it's as intensive as Exploration currently is. I hope to hell I dont have to spend an hour dropping expensive probes, and raising ANOTHER skill to be effective at it. Another Q, is what effect do you suppose will this have on new/n00b miners? What effect will it have on belt ratting do you suppose?
I really want to know if any Devs or even Gms like to mine. We KNOW they are in end-game'ish aspects of EVE, Alliances and whatnot, but are there any miners out there? |

Hardly a life-time, but definitely WELL over-due… Also, I feel very strongly that mining should also have skills comparable to weaponized lasers, particularly:
Mining Laser Range: Adds 1,000m to maximum mining range of all mining lasers per level. Class 1 skill, Perception Primary and Willpower Secondary.
Advanced Mining Laser Range: Adds an additional 1,000m to maximum mining range of all mining lasers per level. Class 2 skill, Perception Primary and Willpower Secondary.
Mining Laser Efficiency: Reduces capacitor power consumption by 5% per level. Class 2 skill, Perception Primary and Willpower Secondary.
Mining Beam Interfacing: Reduces CPU need of mining lasers by 5% per level. Class 2 skill, Perception Primary and Willpower Secondary.
Advanced Mining Beam Interfacing: Reduces CPI need of mining lasers by 2% per level. Class 3 skill, Perception Primary and Willpower Secondary.
Beyond new skills, I also think a change to the interface to allow for “mining laser scalability” would be a definite improvement for many people. Basically, it would allow players to increase/decrease cycle time and their yields proportionally because often 180sec cycles (or worse yet ice harvesters) can be a pretty mind-numbing wait between cycles, and if we could scale it down to 60 seconds while also reducing yield to 1/3 and power consumption to 1/3, the performance and costs would remain identical across the board, but it would allow the miner to be a great deal more active if they want to be, as well as allow potentially less wasted time on an asteroid if it was near empty to begin with.
On that note, can we PLEASE get some graphical representations of just two things, cycle time, and remaining ore in an asteroid so long as the user is using an asteroid scanner.
These two things I know have been asked for easily dozens upon dozens of times by myself and many others. Simply a little “pie-chart” clock above each mining laser, and it could even only track 15sec segments and that would be plenty, just a better means of telling where you are in the mining cycle of those beams please.
Second, please do away with the current asteroid scanner interface, as it is so close to useless that it may just as well not even exist. Simply have it work ONLY for asteroids you’re locked onto (as you typically only care about the rocks you can actually mine at the time anyway) and just put a simple bar, or number of M3 or even units of ore, or something representative of the volume of ore left in the rock as of the last cycle of the asteroid scanner, because logic would imply that a “scanner” for “asteroids” would presumably “scan the asteroid” for what’s inside it. I know with an interface like that they will be used, because they will be useful. CCP has gone back to many modules that used to be a complete joke in the past, and has since made them useful and worth having around, can the industrialists also receive a bit of that attention?

While I am all for the “ORE Industry Ship” for those that want it, I for one have little/no intention of bothering with it because I have little/no use for it… However, I’m certain I am not alone in the desire for a new echelon of “true” mining craft, presumably in the same size area as a freighter (technically not a capital ship, but in that same size range).
I’ve suggested it several times, and I don’t want the ORE Industry Ship scrapped, or sidetracked, just that an actual mining ship that’s meant to be an enormous mining ship be looked into. Not for the sake of having 8 strip miners with 500% bonus to yield per level, nothing nutty like that, actually something barely superior to a hulk (if not quite comparable), but with the expressed intent on being the core-ship in a mining operation.
I think that a Mining Operation Command (MOC) ship would be its best role.
It could have perhaps four high slots, and an innate limitation of only being able to mount two possible modules to those high slots, those being:
At most three Capital Mining Lasers and/or a single gang-warfare link (Mining Foreman Link to be specific).
Since current T1 strip miners mine 540m3/180sec (plus numerous bonuses), I see no problem with a capital class mining perhaps 600-700m3/180sec (10%-30% increase in base yield), however it wouldn’t receive bonuses from prerequisite skills like Mining Barge and Exhumers, only from “Mining Operation Command skill” which would perform as both personal and gang bonuses. So in effect, it ends up right at about where a Hulk already is, so nobody start crying that it would be the end of every asteroid in EVE.
I think bonuses like 20% bonus to range per level of MOC skill to all members of gang would be a perfectly suited and long awaited bonus that miners have asked for in the past but are still yet to receive. As for a second skill bonus, there are numerous possibilities from bonus to mining cycle time, to yield, and many other things, but let’s get something useful.
A “role bonus” could also be used to encourage ganging up with a Mobile Refinery Ship (ORE Industrial Ship), perhaps increasing yields another 5% or reducing cycle times a bit for everyone, and for the MRS it would perhaps increase refining quality 5%-10%
