It's got a very real world counter part, 'scuppering', a word I think that comes from Britain's naval history. Although in real life scuppering was normally done to save the crew, equally it prevented the enemy from taking the ship. In eve, it prevents the enemy taking the kill... And from what i read there was no point in trying to fight to the death, he was warp scrammed in a carrier Vs a mother ship, he only had one tactical option left really...and that was to deny the mother ship the Loot and the kill, it's kinda analogous. Blowing up your own ship is a million miles from lame.

For example, when they complain about people "blobing" and "over killing" their carriers, while they camp gates in multiple capitals popping every solo newb ship that comes through. I pointed that out once, and made Ginger look like a tool. Then he war deced me, and threatened to come "wipe" out BKFT for making him look the fool on the forums. Guess what though? Not only do they do this quite often, aka: "You guys are aweful pvpers because it took you 4 capital ships to kill our two carriers, but we're the best PVPers in eve, even though we just camp gates and pop newb ships in carriers." But the last time I pointed this out once Ginger war dec'd me. Point is, going into low-sec might as well be self-destruct for many. If you want to be consistent in denying insurance payout, then it should be incremental based on the security of the space you were in when popped.
