Hello,
I have a simple interface improvement to help the player better understand what is happening in the heat of combat in regards to their own offensive measures. This improvement simply spits of the friendly and hostile damage messages into two locations so there is no change in the amount of lag generated by this change. This improvement would take up slightly more screen real estate but as a user with low resolution as it is, I feel the change would be more than worth it.
Here are some pictures to explain:
http://i19.tinypic.com/4bnvyxg.jpg <-- Basic Idea http://i18.tinypic.com/4360qie.jpg <-- Basic Idea + Color Coded for Wrecking hits
Pretty neat huh? The old value would display for up to 1 minute or until replaced by the next value.
Some advantages:
1. Received damage messages are easier to read because they donÆt compete for your attention in the old location.
2. Players quickly see just how many of their guns are hitting when burst firing.
3. Players can use staggered firing to ôtestö transversal on the fly.
Some negatives:
1. The interface would have to be slightly shifted to accommodate the new bar. 2. Slightly more screen clutter.
3. Large numbers might have to be abbreviated. IE: 23,450 damage = 23.45 k?
4. CCP would have to find the guy who programmed the interface, perhaps he fell down a well?
Thoughts and comments are more than welcome.

Small addition: Same values might have to "flash" somehow to let you know they've registered.
Also I took the liberty of assuming no one cares if they do 432.7 damage or 433 damage.

For damage that you take, could you also have a bar beside the main HP bar that shows up to the last few hits you took, too?
Otherwise, /signed. CCP, please please -please- consider this idea for immediate application. We know every damage value is already processed in the log. This shouldn't cause any graphical or server-based lag at all.

Smart.
It can be applied to other modules which would otherwise convey textual reports to logs. They should still go in the log naturally.

I'm pretty sure you're getting a ton of messages in that black box up there during combat, with at least 60% of the messages being thrown away. Client overhead shouldn't be a problem.

At the moment, I have no idea how well my weapons deal damage against targets and I can't be bothered sifting through logs to figure it out.
This provides a simple on-screen reference.
And quoting these two for very VERY good additional suggestions.

Looks good, but I have one question, comment regarding this:
What do you do if you have your weapons put into the lower slots, so they aren't on top anymore? Where do you want to Display the Numbers in that case? Do you want to spread out the distance between them ?
Because I usually have my weapons put donw in the lower row, because I just have to activate them just once and have my shields booster on the upper row, to toggle it on off to save capacitor using them on "F1" rather "CTRL+F1" or "ALT+F1"
Otherwise good idea, it would also allow better to track , im my case, to track which weapons is hitting for what amount of damage and if you are loading different ammo types, set the others to reload to the most damaging type. Garr Anders - Minmatar

One other thing I miss is that you can't go back and see what happened in a combat. I.E. I'd like to be able to log all of the hits and boosts and see what happened post combat. or be able to quickly scroll back and see what the heck/ and who the heck just hit me for half my shield, when the pop up alert is gone. Most other games have this feature.

Nice option, but if included - it should be just that, an option > toggle-able if you will. It will generate a small fps loss.
Personally, the current damage messages don't really bother me much. They're inaccuarate, true, but the little red bars that move are a nice indication if you're doing enough damage.

The damage could be overlayed in the current "blinking" of the buttons. There might even be a "analouge" style clock to show the percentage of max damage the weapon does. Several different kinds of options for this style of messages should be available.
GREAT IDEA from the OP. =D

good concept. Any extended version of UI customization other than colour and transparency level is great.
Only thing is some people have weapons in there lower slots as u can move modules around.
I would probably recommend putting a bigger gap in between the high, med and low slots for that reason. OR you could have the number display over the actual module doing the damage. I would also kill for a module timer like there was very early on in the game. Something that gave u an idea when the next hit a module would put on your cap.

Love it, Green for miss, amber through red for glancing - full hit. Comes up when hit, then fades after 10-15 sec (very long time in a fight) or is over taken by the next shot.
The back ground could have a hue on it, that would show other info, suck as reaload time, no glow once fired, then gradially increases (like a halo on them their angles) until its bright white, then fires again.
I like it. Signed with a big red pen...

I like this idea as well as the OP's.
Having the damage displayed until a new value (next shot fired) comes up is good for you to be able to glance down at after the shot is fired. Too many times I have missed information by it not displaying (too many messages at once) just flashed on screen and didn't have log open.
Damage messages at the moment are spamming the prime real estate (i know they can be turned off) but it is good information. Having them by the modules makes sense. _____________________________ Public Health Advisory - Say NO to OOC! |

Amke it like a bar that fills up, simpler than glows and such.
For colours, perhaps yellow for glancing, amber for normal hits, red for well aimed, and crimson with exclamation marks and glowiness for wrecking!

The best thing to go with this is better logs management.
For example, we should be able to toggle their activation, but only feed them into memory. There should be a second phase to toggle for writing them to HDD.
One without the other would be popular along with better UI.

Yep, I want that. As a couple of people have said, it would be cool to also have more than only the last damage received displaying at a time.
While the combat log does both things at once, it is incredibly laggy (client side) and takes up way too much space. Wasn't there some dev post a long long while ago that CCP were looking into this matter...? ______________ Join the Family |

Love it! Simplicity at it's finest.
Number and color code for hit type is all we need. Don't have time to read those long sentences with new messages coming every second anyway, making the current system almost unusable. Could also do the same for incoming damage as numbers above our ship's shield/armor/hull view.

Nice idea, but I have one thing to point out concerning this.
The UI is already slowing the game down heavily. Some UI optimization before adding any more to it would be HIGHLY appreciated. Even a single window open on the UI steals way too much performance.
Mentioned earlier is the overview and its transparency, begone with it, or... at least give us the option to make it none-transparent. |

I think a simple (and usable) combat log would be easier and more useful.
Currently, the combat log acts more like a list than a log which causes all sorts of screwy behavior, and is reset when jumping or docking.

I read someone else mentioning this, but for when you're trying to gauge which of your ammo types is doing the most damage, instead of straining between the combat windows that pop up and are quickly replaced, you could just look down at the nice digits displayed above your modules. :D
