To attempt to create load on the server we invite everyone to join us in attacking a Starbase on Singularity (the test server) on Sunday, 8 July at 11.00 to 12.00 GMT. To participate in this event you'll need to have a client set up for testing, more information on that can be found in this FAQ. When you log in, join the in game channel 'starbaseattack' the event will take place in the FD-MLJ system. Because the event starts at 11.00 GMT and lasts for about an hour you should make sure you have your character set up with ships prior to the event, preferably in FD-MLJ or very close to it. Since we'll be attacking a starbase we suggest you use Dreadnaughts or Carriers.
This is being run to compare performance between Revelations 2.01 and the upcoming Revelations 2.1 (with Python 2.5 runtime). We would like to thank everyone who shows up to help us test this in advance.
Please post here if you have any questions about this event.

Maybe you could give the skills for a capital ship to the people who have shown they actively test the game instead of just sitting in FD- PvPing all day? You know, a sort of reward thing, you get your server load and we get to do some more testing with the caps after this is done

capital ships are not required for the testing, we need to create load for 2 reasons.
1. we need to measure any performance gain (will get to this later) 2. i need to review the logs afterwards to see if and what new errors are created due to the language change.
we are upgrading from python 2.3 to python 2.5. we are also upgrading visual studio to service pack 1 which effects the compilers.
the change to python 2.5 is mainly because it's better to use than python 2.3, it has newer functions and will give us a performance increase. it's also about bastard time we upgraded it. some of us have been working on this for sometime, i have done alot of benchmark testing on my local server where it is easier to do exact tests on the different languages and measure the results. in some services we have gained a 5% CPU reduction, in other services (like NPC combat) we have gained as much as a 30% reduction.
what i was planning before we announced the release to you peeps and peepetts was a devblog with some graphs and numbers and stuff, but tbh i have been so busy lately i haven't even got all the results together and sent them internally. i was planning to have my 1st weekend off this year, but i want to get this together and send it out to the powers that be at CCP. if i have time i will try and blog it somehow so you have an idea of the gain etc.
1 more comment before i pass out due to lack of beer and sleep, we are gaining memory and CPU on both the client and the server. i can't prove this for sure, but the biggest gain is on the server.
ok, 1 more comment. there has already been alot of testing for this internally and it has been running on sisi for the last 2 days. there are no issues being reported that don't already exist on TQ. so we have no reason to delay releasing this, so when i say "it will be out soon", expect something in the news rambling about a patch bla bla bla very soon.

so, never been involved in any fleet battles yet, so how do we fit? pure for damage or should we bring some tank it it aswell (fitting a geddon for it)
also i noted that you said "make sure you have your character set up with ships", is it me readin to much into this or should i fit a coupple?
on a sidenote, maybe make a few cyno's so people in capitals get a chance to get outthere (incase they dont have themselves an alt to do it)

Not sure if it's the case, but from the looks of it you're mainly interested in server-side performance and server-side logs, right ?
Is there a chance you'll be asking a few of us for client-side logs ? If yes to any of the above, do individual computer specs matter ? Are you interested in a fair spread of systems (from really lousy, barely-able-to-run-EVE machines, up to the best gaming rigs possible) or just in the upper spread ?
Should everybody (or for that matter anybody) run the "client logserver" at all or not for this particular test ? I mean, would it be of any use at all, or would it just interfere with the normal test, seing how it's "normally" not used on TQ by pilots ? And, for that matter, should we be running whatever other programs we normally run (EVE-Mon, antivirs, TS/Ventrilo, etc) or shut them all down ?
On to more "mundane" matters.
Is this a "live random fire" POS, so should we pack a strong buffer tank on a battleship, or can we just get in and add some load with "whatever" ship we have at the moment ? Or, quite the contrry, should we bring weaker ships, as you need loads of wrecks and drones and other objects scattered around in the aftermath ? Should we "optimize" our overview, or should we just leave it packed choke-full with stuff like beacons, drones and so on ?
And, so on, I guess you know where I'm heading

Running the LogServer is highly reccomended. If you get any weirdness or errors of course you should then report it.
Your shiptypes don't really matter. What we want is just a good ol' fashion lagfest under realistic circumstances, and that's easily obtained with a bunch of ships, bunch of drones, bunch of explosions etc. Your survivability however will probably be greater the bigger ship/harder tank that you have. Small ship pilots can expect to have to grab new ships a few times ;)
Also, just have fun, I set up a starbase that should survive some spanking, and is meaner towards smaller ships then bigger (lots of small and medium guns, not so many large).

Hey devs, just curious - have you tested 2.3 vs 2.5.1 with massive numbers of fighters on grid? I figure that's fairly CPU intensive and some of the changes made might benefit that a great deal, you DEFINITELY need to make a dev blog with the charts showing the difference, what other stuff than ratting benefits, etc. :)

Zulupark, what would you consider a hard tank on a Raven ? Would 68-78% resistances be enough, in combination with some shield boosting once in a while ?
(or if anyone else can respond to this question...never actually tried to tank POS guns)
---------- I made a bet for 100M and a faction fitted Raven that I wouldn't get any dev/admin change to my signature even when I specifically ask not to. So please, think of my poor wallet! |

This will be a starbase assault only, it should not be considered a free-for-all, anyone shooting gangmates or in any way disobeying the rules of the test server will be punished.
A good tank would be something with 60%+ resistances and a shield booster/armor rep

The 1 2 3 steps above worked. The added test patch ( 34493 ) on Singularity asked me to double check where it was going before it installed ( after downloading as if normal ). Before I dared try, that part worried me as I saw on the sparce info I did find that test patches can not be removed if applied to one's Tranquility installation ( 34381 ).
FYI - the last mirror seems to be about a month old at this point ( wierd to logon and find my main in an area I was working early June ) Is this posted anywhere exactly ? and who knows when it is mirrored again ?
any other info of note for noobs to Singularity would be apprciated. besides Server and Testing F.A.Q. List (must read!) and Test Server bans and rules

When trying to connect to Sisi, it failes after ccp.ve201.fr3.lon.llnw.net.
This seams to be one of the proxys of ccp's multi homing system. So ppl coming in over thsi server seams to be affected from teh problem. others may not. ------- http://www.stillbruch.ch |

Ive been ready on the test server for the past week, preparing ships and getting everyone there. I invited friends and corp mates to the testing today but I cannot even login because the server status is 'Unknown' when its clearly up with 486 players right now. I even had to wake up at 6:30 am to get on 30 mins BEFORE the testing began. Thanks for wasting my week of work to get ready for this event, Thanks for wasting my morning by having to wake up for nothing. Thanks for inviting the whole EvE community when you really didn't want anyone but your friends to join you on SiSi. This might sound like a Flame but thats because it kinda is, Im very upset with CCP right now...

Well, from the sound of things according to the GF folks who are on right now, they do have at least a few hundred people on SiSi, most of whom are shooting a POS, so hopefully CCP's getting what they need to work on the lag issues even though we can't join the fun.

Thanks for wasting our time CCP. At least let us know that it was a controlled test. And that you dont care about battleship, and + of the capital fleet. Zulupark even stated that the test is ongoing, and they likely dont need more. Yet there was less than 200 in the testing system, and theres 500 on the server.
If you keep doing it like this, where + the people sit around doing nothing, people arent gonna come and help out. And then you dont have enough people to do tests.
*sigh*.

i finally get on the test server today 15mins before the event i spend another 45mins trying to get a gang invite before this is posted in the starbase attack channel
CCP Zulupark > we're trying to run a controlled load test, and that takes a lot of coordination. We now have enough people right now, and probably don't need more.
all i can say is dont ask again ccp cos i will not be able to try and help you out
and since you set the limit very low for the ammount or players you need why was this not advertised? a plan is just a list of things that dont happen!

Needless to say, the results were as expected. The lag was horrid, the people paid little attention, and the test server took a hit. All in all, a good test of the new python code upgrade. =)
Doesn't matter what was going to happen - problem is CCP asked a lot of players to get a ship and log on @ 11:00. A lot of people wasted their time getting a ship ready, getting up at some ******** time and generally just getting ready for this, and what they get is a blocked port or a failure from CCP officials to do something as simple as invite someone to a gang. I think you would find that the whine is just as much about CCP incompetence in this matter as it is about not being part of the event. ____________

The lagfest -sorry, stress test- was pretty boring with the server lagging out on everyone. Zulupark's language wasn't always appropriate either, and not spawning a Titan to DDD everyone after the test is just rude. It's the least you can do.
Anyway, glad I could help, but not sure I'm in for the next one... ---------- I made a bet for 100M and a faction fitted Raven that I wouldn't get any dev/admin change to my signature even when I specifically ask not to. So please, think of my poor wallet! |

Dear CCP devs, what happened on the test server was, again, a display of lacking communication and disregard towards a lot of your customers.
I'd seriously suggest:
1. More Information
2. More Communication
Please do it right next time and please assign one of your staff members for communication purposes in the test server chat channels only. People won't freak out half as much if you just talked to them.

Edited by: Eddie Knight on 08/07/2007 11:57:17 I won't complain because I'm not sure what the test was about. Was there even an official gang? What was attacked?
All I know was that there were a lot of people in the system and most of them were around a station half an hour after the event was supposed to start. Someone eventually discovered a POS and some people went there and attacked it. I doubt that was the target CCP had in mind since only a hand-full of ships went there and there was no official CCP char to be seen. I decided to stay cloaked and watch for a few minutes instead of joining the attack since I came there to help and that attack could've ruined the actual test. After a few more minutes it was announce the test was over. I'm clueless about what happened and I look forward for an official reply. :)
Oh forgot to add, I experienced no lag and in the worst moment (at the station with lots of people around) I experienced a minimum of 15 FPS which was great. Well done CCP. _____________

could not agree more.
there were about 300ish people in the starbase attack channel and about 200ish in local in FD-
the attack was taking place next door so if only 100 people took part and that is all ccp were after why did they not tell us?
i generally go on the test server everyday to try out set ups and you can see over 100 people online most days so why then make a major news article asking for people to attend and then ignore them?
its not the fact that i did not get to shoot a pos ive done that loads its the total disregard ccp have had for there players who have attended this "event"
what will happen next time ccp ned help? will players go or will this have put them off? a plan is just a list of things that dont happen!

Well was indicative too live server, though this was only to see how far the CPU bar went pretty much from what I can tell.
One thing it does highlight - Logistics ships in fleet is a waste of time unless you get 3++ mins advance notice to activate rep model let alone lock.
So for me it was useful - wont be rushing to do logistics l5 now to save my frustrations.

I decided about an hour before the event was due to take place that I'd join in.
I logged on, flew to the appropriate system, fitted a ship, undocked and got gang invited. Then I jumped into the next door system when asked and shot a POS.
Once finished, I logged off and went about my way elsewhere.
I don't see what the problem is. I'm not a 'friend of CCP', I'm just a grunt but I was in on the test.

Edited by: Ol'' Delsai on 08/07/2007 13:57:47 I've just fled my ship in FD-MLJ yesterday, and log in today 30 minutes before the event starts ... Everything went well : - I was ganged - jumped in the system - fire at the pos - experienced 3/4 minutes module / movement / reload lag - log out when the test finished
That was the first time I participate in this kind of event. It was not really fun but was a good simulation of POS Warfare on TQ, so CCP has lot of data to play with now...
Hope this will help reduce lag on TQ
Btw, even though we were ~100 in gang, we were 170 in local including 50 ppl not ganged and hitting the POS
For spammers and ppl that are upset, don't expect to log 10 minutes after the beginning of the event and participate in it ... Moreover this was an event created to recreate lag and test some code ... that was never intended to be fun and entertain you .... I really don't what you were expecting/thinking about it for being so much disapointed ...

1. It's not disappointed, it is angry. 2. Expectations are very simple - Communication - Perhaps a tiny bit of appreciation on the part of CCP for all the players who show up and are willing to help - Not a complete waste of time
Is that so hard to understand? It's not like the players wanted something from CCP. CCP asked for help. Get that into your heads. There are many players who aren't bootlicking fanboys.

Communication was awful to non existant. Quote: To attempt to create load on the server we invite everyone to join us in attacking a Starbase on Singularity (the test server) on Sunday, 8 July at 11.00 to 12.00 GMT.
Not 100, not 200, not 400.. everyone. There was no communication in the 'starbaseattack' channel, no popup window telling the rest of the players that there are already enough people. The first post was an announcement. Nothing more.
Appreciation in form of proper handlung, e.g. good communication. That includes the time before the test starts, while it lasts and after it is over. You don't show appreciation by treating people like a bunch of worshipping teenagers who haven't shown up because they want to help, but because they want to be entertained and will suck up anything.
However some people will defend CCP at all costs and won't allow a critical word being spoken..

This Event is typical CCP and EVE Online.
1) Official Website info is far from Full and Accurate, more like Hints and Hype.
2) Greater and Better info is found in unofficial sites, Chat, and Forums; often the later after-the-fact.
3) Hoards ( and Alliance ) have tried this game, few have enjoyed it. Seems even most persistant players have threatend to quit at least once.
4) Sometimes 1st timers stumble into it perfectly, while many vets often spend hours to repeat play experience as good as its past, potential, and looks.
5) Given the above, the whole game has an "Under Construction" feeling as things are added or nerfed, rules change, and yet Lag Persists.
For me this past 18+ months resembles a relationship which was hot active lust 3+ months, matured to trying to build something deeper, I did quit once and couldn't stand being single. Now I keep looking for a better alternative, openly dating others.
Feel free to add to the "Typical CCP & EVE" list above.

i must admit i did not know about how the gm's thanked the players after the event by saying GTFO, sort of adds salt to the wound imo
i find it interesting that there has been no offical responce from ccp to this thread after the event.
would not be suprised to see a news article tomorrow after the dt thanking everyone and not mentioning any of the "dicussions" held here
as for people saying well what did u expect? i think the only thing that people are upset about is the lack of communication from ccp before, during and after the event, people just want to be treated with a little itty bit of respect. a plan is just a list of things that dont happen!

This is not the thread to compare EVE and WoW, or the peeps playing them. But personally I feel its stupid CCP invited ''Everyone'' to help today.
Yea - Its communication - as I said in my first two points you failed to quote:
"This Event is typical CCP and EVE Online.
"1) Official Website info is far from Full and Accurate, more like Hints and Hype.
"2) Greater and Better info is found in unofficial sites, Chat, and Forums; often the later after-the-fact."
IDK - maybe we are both right: EVE has many persistant flaws and shortcomings, like boring PvE AI, which are so troubling most 'stupid' players quit, this leaves a more interesting group to PvP ?

Edited by: Buckeroo Bonzai on 08/07/2007 20:15:49 Edited by: Buckeroo Bonzai on 08/07/2007 20:15:20 I went in know full well what to expect. Everyone *****ing about " oh it was too laggy " well that was the point, to load up the server. For those of you that say there wasn't enough "DEV communication" well how long had it been posted with the date and time? I set up my ship the day before and logged in half an hour before the event. The GM came on told everyone where to go and I did. He sent out a gang invite to the CAP pilots first and when the fleet was full said they were not sending out anymore invites ( heres a tip for all you whinners saying you didn't get a invite FLEETS CAN ONLY BE SO BIG ). But just because the fleet was full didn't mean you couldn't play. I did. I jumped into the next system warped to the Cyno that was up and started shooting the POS like everyone else.
Now that being said I will not go to any CCP test event again for one reason and one reason only. When CCP Zulupark (the GM that was running it) said "the test is over thank you now GTFO" that was it for me, never again. I mean damn talk about lack of respect for the players that were there and from a GM no less.
To CCP: I hope you got some good info from this test cause I wont be there to "help" again.

CCP, you throttled connections during a controlled lag test that was supposed to be nothing more than "show up on grid, fire weapons for twenty minutes." I am outraged, horrified and shocked at this barbaric display. I will be writing congress and the United Nations with my complaints, citing crimes against humanity.
To those who 'missed out', chill the **** out already, jesus christ. It was a boring lag-filled experience. Nothing 'exciting' happened and it was just meant to be a stress test. If you're this angry that you weren't able to show up and shoot at a tower for 20 minutes before getting told 'hey thanks for showing up folks' and then logging off, maybe you need to rethink your priorities in life.

So lots of people willing to participate weren't able to log in? Wow, sounds like a fair representation of 0.0 fleet battles to me. Your signature was inappropriate, email [email protected] to find out why (don't forget to include a link to it) -Sahwoolo |

I got dropped twice and relogged back on and had no problems what so ever. I mean it took a few mins to get back in but that was to be expected.

Edited by: Chi Quan on 08/07/2007 22:00:29 stop this senseless ranting. it was not an "event", like you get free beer and a brezel if you take part. it was a stresTEST, clearly stated in the post.
everything was well, trying to coordinate 100 ppl is a hard thing, and Zulupark did a good job in this, everyone warped as intended, he didn't have to punish anyone or forcewarp and was very patient. although he (or she? i'll just refer to a guy for simplicity) asked not to talk in the gang channel, it was full of babbeling nonsense within seconds, yet he didn't complain. when some cap pilots asked for a little time to get fuel he waited for them. everything happened exactly as announced, a larger fleet consisting of about 100 ppl went to a neighboring system and attacked a pos, nothing extraordinary. it was a lagfeast and i am shure serverside resources were "stressed out".
now seriously, what did you expect? it was clear that not everyone could participate, fleets have a member limit. don't worry, you didn't miss anything, stuff like that happens regularly on TQ, althogh most of the time on a smaller scale. it was JUST a test, take it with a pinch of salt, the test server is exactly for this, tests. normally there are about 60 ppl on (double on TQ downtime), ccp wanted to make shure enough cap pilots were there, and they explicidly announced it. it wasn't caps only though, about two out of three ships were bcs or something else, and about 60% of the people in the announced channel were invited to the fleet. the invitation started about 20 minutes to 11.00. if you arrived at 11.00 or later, you missed it, standard operating procedure in fleets (if FC says be there at that time, you beter be ready on time or you are left behind). the invitations were random and Zulupark did not ask if someone was piloting a capship before he invited (he did make shure there were some in though).
all in all i fail to see why ppl complain, it seems like those were never before on the testserver.
edit: and it's a good thing the group was't DDed at the end, someone might have had some faction/officer fiting which is not easy to replace on the testserver. -- Tempus fugit -- |

Hummm your wrong, read the OP and Title.
Testing Event - Sunday, 8 July at 11.00 to 12.00 GMT
To attempt to create load on the server we invite everyone to join us in attacking a Starbase on Singularity (the test server) on Sunday, 8 July at 11.00 to 12.00 GMT.

Edited by: Zachstar on 08/07/2007 23:32:02 Wow seems like many who are calling for the ranting and complaining to stop got in JUST fine...
Ya I'm on yall's case because frankly the bootlicking fanboyism that I sometimes see on this forum is disgusting.
This isn't some open source game or HL2 mod where you can say "When it's done (Tuesday)" and "The dev's have lives too" As this is a paid system that is earning them ALOT of money they have a responsibility to act in a professional and realistic manner.
I am very glad I decided to not participate in this test. For even if I would have gotten in, the situation would be equality bad.
From the posts I am seeing here and the limited amount of looking around I have been able to do in the limited time I have on these forums I have determined that the way this public stress simulation test was handled in the worse way I could have imagined.
With my experience in the ORBITER community and other projects that sometimes require a public input or action I can honestly say that this test was an utter and complete FAILURE to properly manage and simulate the client/server riggors of a large scale system battle. I expect the data obtained from this test will only be marginally effective at reducing problems in further EVE updates.
That is just the tip of the iceberg!
With the amount of time to prepare and anticipate the test there is NO way to justify the amount of failed connections and wasted time of the people involved who failed to connect. If they can't support up to thousands connecting then they ought to not have advertised the stress test so. There are network simulators that can properly assure that people can atleast connect. If it's broken FIX IT then do the test. And any amount of bandwidth throttling or connection blocking to influence the "type" of members connection is completely unacceptable and voids the results of any real test.
Then on top of that is the great amount of disrespect shown to the people who were able to connect HELLO these are people taking their free time (Time is money, sleep, family, etc. It can be cheap but these days it's EXPENSIVE) to supposedly help test systems that will hopefully improve the experience they get for the amount they pay for. Again this is not some open source project where you can just say "It's beta, DEAL with it" Money changes EVERYTHING. PLEASE remember that.
If you have an observation.. Share it but the bootlicking and frankly rude jumps on people posting about real issues when you have none is unacceptable. You need to stop it and find another way to support EVE if you want to see that much improvement in PR and game stability in the future.

I wonder how long it took to fit a dread under the week. 5-10 minutes?
better announce a playtest big instead of having a playtest with 60 ppl and being unable to reproduce lag if it helps to improve Eve then those playtests should happen more often

I was there, it was just like any other test event that have happened earlier. Nothing spectacular, standard fleet-pos engagement with lots of lag. You really didnt miss anything if you werent there.
And if you upset about not getting into test server at all, well thats pretty common too. It has very limited resources, goes up and down when devs want. Im supprised it handled the amount of players as well as it did.

Well now, so much flaming that I don't know where to begin.
First off: This was a load test, and it worked perfectly. We managed to create massive load on the test server not just in the system the starbase assault took place but also on the logon code, authentication and nearby systems (FD-MLJ had 200+ people in local and that also helps with creating load). This is perfect for us to find glitches.
Second: I'm amazed to see how many people think we closed the server/blocked ports/showed favoritism. The server was configured to be open for all, the fact that many could not get on, got 'Status unknown' messages and got stuck in login would suggest that we found some issues that need to be fixed, no?
Third: Maybe more information should have been given out to those that had logged in and couldn't get in on the action, but I for one was lagging out badly myself and had a hard time to communicate with anyone. We didn't announce that the test was controlled or limited because, quite frankly I don't think we would have gotten the participation numbers we needed that way. Remember, even if you didn't get in the gang and got to shoot at the tower you still helped.
Fourth: My language was in my opinion professional and fair. At no point did I say 'GTFO OFF' or any such thing. I thanked people for their time and apologized for the inconvenience.
