This exactly same thing happened last night, when I had 1 minute left of training a skill and preparing to go to sleep!
Now I need to sit up and wait 1 hour until the server's back up and I acn start training a skill again

1: Oveur spilt beer on the server switching hub
2: Oveur spilt beer on the cleaning lady so she got angry and unplugged everything

First of all people, the server has not crashed. It is up and showing people online.
Connecting to the server is causing timeouts.
I'm in the UK here. Anyone else care to provide where they are in the world instead of howling about CCP first? You know, engage some actual thought process to the situation instead of jumping to conclusions? Or do we all work for Microstof as Bill Gates' lead developers and have PHD's in computer programming and network administration now and know better but just complain instead?

No matter how upset we get or how poor the service becomes, the people at CCP will still get paid. Change that and my bet is that customer satisfaction and service would improve quite a bit!

ok so what the hell happened. the server's down agin. this is what 4 times in 2 weeks that the server died. come on. ccp needs to get this **** worked out fast or they will lose alot of people. the new people to eve wont put up with this crap.
on the other side ccp has done great work on speeding things up with this last patch but really what is the problem with the server ccp. can we get an answer about what happened.

Not normally - you've caught everything at a bad time - two patches in two days, one of which involved a change to the Python library version.
Normally maybe once every 10 days the servers cough and spit out hairballs for a few mins but this week is exceptional - and bit more than the usual glitches.

It is during times like this that I give thanks CCP has chosen to assign its various resources to projects like EVETV or EVEVoice. I find it reassuring that CCP is so clearly focused on delivering value to its customers in the form of a stable and reliable gaming experience.

CCP, i think you need to fire all beer drinkers, and then, before you release a patch, theres this thing called singularity, its called the TEST server, you know where you "Test new stuff before we release it on tranquility" which isn't happening, therefore its cutting in to our play time.
I think we deserve a free month of play time on this, now if you'll excuse me im done with what i had to say there for

Yes unfortunately it is usual for something to be going wrong whether it be server crashes or stupid amounts of lag. Also, it is quite common to be treated like mushrooms, although lately there has been a small attempt at giving us information.

Don't know whats worse the broken off restarts or the total lack of information from the CCP officials.. the little box is still saying: Revelations 2.1.1 patch deployed... if it was deployed then the server would be up and running, its not...

why o why did i decide to come back to this game this week. i should have just waited till all the bugs where fixed.and now eve-mon says the server is starting up for what the 3rd or 4th time now. lets see if it stays up.

please not the sever will be back up in 16 mins for thoes that havent been though this reboot problem . It takes ccp 3 times to reboot the sever before they get luck wasting 4 evenings in a row now chears ccp

probably nothing, but you can loose your drones, ship and all things inside it. But probably its all alive when you login fast enough. But its also possible loosing everything when starting up and login all together.

Apparently this is the thread to talk about compensation for CCP not providing us with the entertainment service we have paid them for.
I say 'apparently', because the thread I started to talk about this has been locked as the moderator decided it was actually a discussion about 'server downtime'.
This is my first experience with forum moderation, and I'm quite surprised with the heavy handed approach (having run online forums myself).
If it is forbidden to talk about compensation, and service level agreements, and what the EULA actually says about uptime - well, I apologise to everyone and will go back to sleep again.
As I said in the other thread, I appreciate that all software and hardware will have unforeseen problems, and to blame the devs for this is just stupid. However, someone is taking our money to provide a service and - like anything from cable TV to food - if the service is not there, then you have a right to compensation.
I believe there are even some laws that consider this problem in some countries.

The remainder of that was that I wish they'd get the server issues resolved. And, two days? Previously, I wanted to know how many hours of game play has been lost due to crashes this month. It might come very close to being two days worth of time.

ok so when is ccp going to fix the database issue. the last 4 times now the server has died was do to the database server. i thought you chaps at ccp said you fixed the database server. well if you fixed it and its working this bad then please unfix the darn thing.
so ether replace the database server with new or get it fixed fast. 4 times in 30days is way to much.

I've just returned to EVE after a year off. I thought I was going to have a lot to learn, but it seems as though the forums are exactly the same as when I left, as are the DB problems after a patch.
You're not getting compensation for the time you could be doing something more important than playing a game. Get over it.
The devs are not going to implement a skill queue. They have said so consistently for the last four years. Get over it.
Patches will cause downtime. Always have, always will. Now might be a good time to discover the fact that there is life outside of EVE.

It is nothing personal, they just don't want the forums flooded with threads about the server being down. It is standard policy on this forum to lock all but the longest thread related to a server outage.
As for compensation, CCP has stated several times that they will not provide compensation for minor unscheduled downtimes. Nor will they provide compensation for longer planned downtimes. Should there be a multi-day unplanned downtime, I would expect CCP to revise that policy.

It is this sort of loyalty that makes this (a) such a great game and (b) such an easy cash cow for CCP. They are providing you with a service; if the service is not here, they owe you. Let's face it, you've paid.
Just because this is some kind of uber-leet space game doesn't make it any different from bog-standard cableTV, ISP or any other kind of service.
Remember, any of that ISK you have is all CCPs property...

Its really simple fellas. See all that smack talk in the thread? its made by CCP employees. Thats how they dont have time to actully fix the server.
Ppl said this before and all CCP does is ignore us. Soon many players will probably start leaving eve and CCP will start crying and making new trailers to get more noobs into the game. Welcome to the CCP way of running "bussiness"
Their standard procedure is probably as follows:
1) server crashes
2) they make new thread for ppl to put their anger in on the forums
3) they restart the server which takes hours cause they never fixed it, probably keep restarting till its up
4) ppl log back in

Their standard procedure is probably as follows:
1) server crashes
2) they make new thread for ppl to put their anger in on the forums
3) they restart the server which takes hours cause they never fixed it, probably keep restarting till its up
4) ppl log back in
5) CCP deletes th thread mentioned in step 1

These downtimes provide the fuel. A high-profile article in PC Gamer would provide the lighting fluid.

*sigh* the sad part is that i'm starting to feel angry towards CCP, been subscribed to the game for 3 years now, but i think my oasis of patience is starting to run a bit dry when it comes to random crashing andd server downtime. It's not acceptable anymore CCP.
I'd really like to support you guys and say that CCP is working their butt off for us, but really... it's starting to get a bit sad.
Blah... i'm going to go and be grumpy in my corner...

The last month overall has been fine. The last week, however, has not. Every day for the last few days, I can recall the server failing for one reason or another for a plenty long time. Thankfully I haven't lost any significant assets, but many people have, and it is putting an unnecessary load on both the playerbase and the GM staff. Being disconnected once or twice a day because of a bad node/router would be one thing, but unplayable lag for two hours or a dead server for an hour and a half is not a minor issue.
I understand that CCP are indeed working hard to get this issue resolved. To say otherwise would be foolish and arrogant. But whatever is happening is all related to a DB error (I'm guessing the contract system). I think the best course of action would be to work explicitly toward the solution to end this nightmare. If the underlying problem isn't addressed, the symptoms will continue, and likely get worse. With that said, I would rather have a 48 hour downtime for DB repair than another week of unexpected server crashes and lag festivals. I'm sure alot of other people feel the same way.
Ofcourse that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...
...But I do find it discouraging that no CCP officials have posted anything this time around.

ALL I know is, I REALLY hope that my petition for re-imbursment gets picked up, I lost over 200MIL due to the crash... and then it took so long to get back up I couldnt even salvage my own wreck... :(

No, Shame On You. It is tolerance like this that allows for nothing to be done. I understand that all games go through upgrades, you have downtimes to fix problems, fix's, software and hardware upgrades, patches, are all part of it. The thing is, the game goes down when there hasn't been a recent patch. The servers die due to faulty hardware or software. Thing happen, I understand, but when things happen TOO OFTEN, that's when I question why. ANd I still haven't seen a post regarding the statistics for July's server crashes. I'm still interested to know exactly how much total game time has been lost. As for compensation, if a service provider doesn't provide the service paid for, then yes, they should reimburse their client when they fail in their obligation.

CCP have in the past given free days back to people's subscription if the server has been truely awful. It's been much worse then this before and they've fixed it and I'm sure they'll fix it again.
It should be pointed out that there are servers supporting (out there in the real world) millions of users that run 24/7 for 365 including maintaince and are only allowed at most 5 minutes of downtime a year (For instance broadcast servers). So it is possible to do this.
However do we have a service level agreement with CCP saying they will provide 24/7 servers nope...

Eve O is considered to be somewhat of a technical marvel by those that know about super computing clusters, and huge databases. How meny of us can really say they have the same level of experiance as CCP in using their own custom designed cluster software, that supports an aveerage of 20,000 simultanious users all making hundreds of database entries per minute each. All of this and it's 23/7 365 days a year, not including unplanned outages and updates, but even with those included it would still amount to over 95% uptime. There's a reason that their server cluster is one of the largest outside of academia, and thats because even the banks don't run their systems on such a large scale. And to top it all, you get 24/7 server support at no extra cost to the customer.
Give em a break, they don't want the servers down any more than we do, to us it's a lack of entertainment, so we go load another game and play on, for them it's a way to feed the family, eve goes down, loses even 1 customer then they have less in the long run.
The server will settle down and we'll find summat else to moan about till the next patch, hope the next thread is as funny as this one :)

QFT. Tranquility is not an average cluster, and EVE is not an average piece of software. It is constantly being updated, refined, improved, tinkered with, expanded upon and, what's more, both the game and the server cluster are forced to endure use stresses that are unique not only in the modern world of gaming, not only in the history of gaming, but in the history of server clusters and databases, full stop.
To demand any higher quality of workmanship and devotion from CCP than they already give is, to my mind, deeply unreasonable.

EVE is not regulated, and IMO pretty unique. But you can still cancel your sub if you want.
I remain a fanboy, and ... well, at the end of the day, if EVE's down for a week, I'll sob a bit over lost SPs, and then go do something else with my life instead. Like go to the pub, and talk about EVE.
I don't like there being downtime, but at the end of the day, so what? I care about downtime on the stuff that makes my life really really bad, like not having fresh water, or no shower.
