Is it true that Oveur messed up the database by typing in bad words like poo and willy in unused fields beside people he didn't like?
Yep. Then he spilled beer into the database server's air intake. ----- CONCORD Notice: Don't drink and fly. Drunken jumping can result in loss of ship through "navigational error".

Aus playtime screwed again
Why does CCP hate Australia?
It's intersting, but I haven't noticed the usual deluge of "OMH CCP U SUX I R CANCELIN MI 17 ACKOWNTS!!" posts. Or maybe I just got so used to seeing the same threats from the same people week after week during every little unscheduled downtime that now they don't even register in my consciousness anymore.
...then again, it's possible the beers are helping there.

Edited by: Elias Modron on 18/08/2007 12:58:58 Seems it's starting up again. Then when it's up, it'll crash again due to everyone joining, heh.
This is one reason I like this game and CCP, when the server goes down they actually tell you the problem and give a switch-on ETA, rather than "Oops sorry, the part-time night-watchman spilt coffee on the server's biege-box."

Didn't you know, 100% of the EvE playerbase all work with exactly the same datacentre/cluster as is running the Eve universe, this automatically qualifies them to comment on the merest hint of an issue, let alone a server going down... ------------- Freedom is the right of all sentient species - Optimus Prime |

No what you don't understand is that CCP deviously plan all these down times to make extra money. It's true, they really don't want us to play their game because we tax the system which costs them money. Every time the server goes down unannounced kieron and Oveur can afford another bottle of vegetable oil to slap onto t20 while the entire workforce at CCP chase him around with paddles, it's part of his punishment for the t2 bpo thing. Why vegetable oil? Well with all the money they save on server downtimes, what else are they going to spend it on?

Out of interest, anyone know the answers to the following?
- which other MMORPGs use MS SQL Server as their persistence layer - which other MMORPGs require 1 hour (or more) downtime... Every. Single. Day?
Just wondering.

I'd like to thank CCP from the bottom of my heart for screwing up and letting the server crash. Seriously. If it wasn't for the server going down, I would have forgotten about my toast in the grill and it would have burned. Mmm toast.
My toast and I thank you.

I believe EVE is the largest, non-instanced/sharded server to date. So I think we can let them have 1 hour. Remember they are doing things across a larger area than any other server currently in existance, if this is all true. If not, then I'd like to know too

Shouldn't the failover to the secondary server, you know, keep the stuff running? Otherwise, what's the point of having failover hardware?
failover hardware != performance hardware... if you see that eve now has 3 ramsams, it's a bit stupid to have a second cluster with ramsams not being used 99,9% of the time. Probably fallover, as in, no transactions get lost, no money gets lost... etc..
