Just to follow up, I have set my MTU back to 1500 since lowering it to 1300 didn't seem to help. I have disabled wireless on my router and never had a disconnect since then.
I have bought a newer router; a d-link WBR 2310 and will report results once I get it installed. I still don't know what my router is changing in the packets when in wireless mode and I doubt I will ever find out.

Just adding myself to the people having the problem
Everything was fine up until today for me, no settings on anything changed and basically not able to play due to (lost count at this stage) disconnects. My net connection itself is fine.

Has anybody that had this problem (constant disconnects every few minutes) actually managed to solve it totally?

I usually run eve without problems.
Since yesterday I am all that changed. I get disconnected from eve every 3 to 5 mins. If I try to log in a second account, the first disconnects and later on the second will die too.
I thought, well, my ISP has problems, so I ping plotter the connection to the eve server. Hmm everything perfect with my ISP (Ireland NTL) round trip.
The only thing that "happend" to my computer was a recent MS Windows XP patch day update.
Does anyone here knows what the recent Windows xp patch (I got it on the 15th of November 2007) "fixed"? Usually I check this patches, before I install them, but this time I was in a hurry ... lesson learned.
Well Bug report created, I hope this helps CCP to kill a bug (Only a dead bug is a good bug, YARRRR)

For anyone having this problem, could you do a trace route to the Eve server and check to see if the route goes through the net provider Level 3?
Thats the route I'm using to trying to determine if perhaps the problem lies there. Maybe we can figure this out ourselves without having the make the devs sober up long enough to help us out

Hi, I also have this problem and am with NTL in Ireland. Any other countries affected? I am also suffering from the C++ bug and have also posted in this thread http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=631115&page=3.
I am going to update my bug report with PingPlotter and MTR logs in case it is ISP related. And Jared, I go through Level 3:

mate just sent me his traceroute results (he's eircom ireland as opposed to ntl) and he seems to be taking a different route. Maybe the issue lies with Level 3?
Also, any know if its possible to force your connection to take a different route?

super, thanks for the traceroutes.
I'm going to collect them all soon and email them in to ccp. It might be worth ringing NTL (I aint doing it, have a credit mobile and aint spending 40 quid just to be on hold :P) so if there are any kind souls that would be willing to do that and report back? :P
However its prob not NTL as other people from other locations are having the same problem.

Runtime errors will reach you all.

I think they do not work today, I say a few 1000 people has this problem.
I think, looking at most of the posts, its a patch/ISP/CCP problem.

Right, I've sent off the traceroutes to CCP explaining the situation and stopping short of begging them to come here and help us figure this out.
Most of the traces are from NTL Ireland players, however there are a couple others that are non NTL and not even in Ireland. The common factor that I can see is that the routes that are having problems are all going through Level 3. So maybe the problem lies there.
This is all just me being an armchair problem solver, but it's the only common factor I can see. The problem people are having with the C++ error is a separate issue as far as I can tell, though some people seem to be having both problem
Anyway, lets hope we get an official response when they get back to work tomorrow. If I hear anything from them myself I'll post here and let ye know.

By the way, if any NTL Ireland users could ring NTL tomorrow and see if you can get anywhere, that would be great. I wont be able to do it as too many meetings tomorrow and anyway I'd rather stick a fork in my eye than ring them. 1 million ISK to anyone who does and gets somewhere (assuming I can stay connected long enough to transfer the cash )
