One question,
How do people feel on how the US compares to most other developed countries?
I mean, the lack of a good state heathcare system to me seems a joke....
The US (like all countries) was built with the sweat & blood of the people, isnt it a RIGHT of the people to have certain things provided by the state?
As without the countless citizens would fought and died in wars to protect the nation there would be no "great" US as so to speak.
It isnt your taxes, it isnt your presidents taxes, its the taxes of the american people...
I honestly cant think what the US has over the UK for example.
We have
Allot less crime No guns (v.rare) Better wages Free or v.low cost education National heathcare Stronger currency Far less pollution (and a much more enlightened view on the matter) We can booze @ 18
You have
Less taxes Cheaper goods
This is just a disscussion, im curious as to how the "average Joe" feels on the matter.
Also, tbh i dont want to hear the opinion of some guy who earns wayyy above the average US wage, cuz tbh thats the group who benifit most from the flaws of the US.

The Uk is becoming Americanised sadly. No offence to the US`ers here but they're `culture` has rubbed off a tad to much. The only thing the US has over us is the cheap lifestyle.. Gas is cheap, loaning money, the general price of things.
You don't call Britain " RIP-OFF Britain " for nothing or the " Golden isle " cos they hike the prices up for nothing. But id rahter bring my kids up here than there, and yes I was born in the US as well.

Just wait until Dark Matter comes across this...
One sign that the EU is kicking the US is the value of it's currency. I think the Euro buys about $1.40. The British Pound buys $2. Hell, even Canada is pretty much caught up with us Americans. On top of all the good points the OP said, I'm more and more wishing my country would adopt some European ideas.
I doubt it because a lot of Americans are fat, intellectually incurious, and watch way too much television. Lord I hope we can wake up soon.

No. Seriously.
The chances of being shot at school in the US is bigger, but chances of getting mugged is bigger in the UK.
And a few weeks after a ten year old boy killed in a gang related shoting its kinda stupid to start a thread like this, non?

Also, we have:
Asshat cops Corrupt politicians Laws that are slowly removing all rights
You have: Chavs Psycho fundamentalists A nanny stat that's quickly removing all rights
I'd say we're pretty much even on those counts.

Yeah, the fundamental difference between a socialist nanny state and a fascist totalitarian state is one of approach, not result. Both end up with a general populous that have little to no right to free will, and a ruling elite that do pretty much whatever they damn well please.

EU would be my choice. I would prefer to live in Cyprus, English Speaking, relatively cheaper, alot of sunshine.
Also going to the US, I don't feel comfortable with the administration going through my credit card and bank statements/details or taking biometric data, seems too totalitarianism to me, I don't think China's even like that yet.

Edited by: Celeste Coeval on 23/09/2007 13:53:20 Edited by: Celeste Coeval on 23/09/2007 13:52:43 I'm in the UK. Both of our societies seem to be coming to what historically is referred to as the end of a golden age. We are becoming more amercianized and that not a good thing imo. Brits used to take the best of any idea and try to minimize the bad, like adopting the reforms socialism got right. But all of that is changing.
Democracy and "freedom" whatever that is lol are partially to blame, as the majority has the power over government, the problem being is that the majority are institutionalized by being taught things at school that don't really serve their futures. IE Wake up in the morning, do things in uniform all day to schedules and do what your told. When the majority is 99% putty in politicians hands, due to miseducation, how can our perceptions about what society wants be clear? What I mean by this is, politics and government is not taught in school widely.
You are taught that "freedom" and democracy was fought for and it is good. You aren't taught what political parties stand for or what politics is really all about and as the majority doesn't attend higher education, they will never have a full understanding of these concepts. Therefore they place votes based on the "nicest looking" or "best dressed" candidates.
Also we now live in a world where Unilever and Nike have seats at the UN wtf? Corporations get a say in MY world's politics! Yet I don't get a say in their actions and consequences upon any given population.
I'll read more of what others post before I contribute anymore to this thread as it's gonna be a long'un.

Well, if you like free education, healthcare, security, healthy food and nice people I guess that EU wins. If you, on the other hand, like to stick with obese, paranoid, armed rednecks and psychopats then USA is definitively your place.

Never! Won't somebody think of the armchair politicians?
Next topic:
Morocco's population with AIDS is only 0.1% according to the CIA World Factbook. While America's is 0.6%. So clearly Morocco is the greatest country in the world and we should bow down to our new African Overlords. Discuss!
