Ok so ontop of having to do 6 weeks of work in 2 weeks life goes on which means i have to hire people.

Ive interviewed 2 people today and all i can say is we are doomed if this is the cream. one graduated Sciences Po in france and the other is a Harvard grad. Apparently going to elite schools means you have to have no common sense about anything!

For example, an easy question in my line of work. How do you feel about china?

Warning, saying their women are hot and food is good is not enough to endear yourself to me. And certainly wont make you a good analyst! I dont expect a thesis, just concise facts and a damn good general knowledge.

So that if i throw a curveball and ask 'what do you think of the PLAs build up in recent years' i dont get answered with 'murica! Or im french what do i care?

All i want is people who think outside the box or think laterally. Is that too much to ask?

Gray, playing Devil's Advocate for a sec, wouldn't you think an "out of the box" thinker would be better if they weren't sitting on a bunch of preconceived ideas about "XXX"?

There are no preconceived ideas on our part. Our team structure is to always have one person say the opposite to cover as many angles as possible.

But when these guys sent in their resumes they said they were top notch asia pacific guys with strong knowledge of the region with the language skills we need to boot. We called them on this and they were caught out. Or at least unsuitable for our kind of work. Being able to reply quickly to verbal comments for instant knowledge is very important as clients can throw out some truly weird questions.

We ask these questions since theyre pretty standard and gauge the responses. Whats important is a show of their analytic ability be it straightforward / conventional or lateral.

Kir gave a pretty good analysis of a conventional standpoint which is pretty typical of the laymen and its also brief. These are one hour oral interviews which cover dozens of questions ranging from the financial crisis, world history, geopolitics, to just shooting the breeze. Being concise or at least showing the spark of creative thinking is important. We supply training for the actual job when they get hired to mould them to how we want them.

The 3 interviews today failed to impress due to their lack of knowledge / ego / libido / or out and out "im in it for the money and to hell with the job" attitude.

Our hiring process is tough, but it gets the best and we reward that.

In other news im home for a few hours to change / shower / get a real meal. I've said i need to make a real meal once a day. So im cooking the guys in the office a big bowl of chilli, some fetta cheese salad for the side and bought a box of 40 tortillas and other bits and pieces to go with it. Going to cook it here, wrap it up and bring it to the office with a hotplate and serve it up there.
