The first two bits are a nope for me, not my field of expertise, I could handle the Australia bit though, even if I am a whinging pom who doesn't quite score enough points for immigration.

Yay I finally managed to get an interview for a job, which I didn't get. I've been reduced for applying for the automotive equivalent of a McJob, Halfrauds.

Completed a quick telephone interview with them a few minutes ago, it ended thus,

Some HR drone that has no clue what the job entails : You'll have to undertake our 3 week training course to be able to fit products to cars, it'll be at your local branch.

Me : I have 20 years experience in fitting those products, it's all on my CV.

HR Drone: It's company policy, for insurance purposes.

Me : Ok, that's not a problem, who'll be doing the training? *I know pretty much everyone locally involved in the trade

HR Drone : Dave B******

Me : Dave B******? I trained him during his apprenticeship.

HR Drone : Pardon?

Me : Dave was my apprentice at Bavaria, I know him quite well (my previous employer in the trade)

HR Drone : Can I put you on hold?

Me : Certainly
* waits a few minutes

HR Drone : I can't continue with the interview, I've spoken to Mr B******* and he confirms that you trained him. I've taken another look at your CV and you're too experienced for the post, the salary is unlikely to meet your expectations and wouldn't be appropriate for your level of expertise.

Me : I don't care about the salary, it meets minimum wage and it's a job doing something I know.

HR Drone : I'm sorry but you have been unsuccessful in your application.


WTF!!!! All I want is a job and to get away from being unemployed, now it looks like I'm unemployable because of my experience.

That is kind of sad...

i would at least speak to you face to face to ask why you want to do something you are over qualified for and ensure both our expectations are met when it is involving salary and future growth.

Big company who wants to employ mindless drones who won't question what they're told. I've just spoken to the trainer and he's disgusted, he told the HR drone that I was probably the best interviewee they were likely to see.

I think they're worried that I'd know more about the gear, and the cars, than the guys who sell it to unsuspecting customers. I've had the overqualified / too old argument thrown at me a lot recently. I'm on the scrapheap at 42

Jonah, have you considered Australia as a possibility? I know its much easier for people a bit younger to go out half a world for opportunity, but if the alternative is unemployment... Sounds like you are well qualified and chartered.

I've looked into it, unfortunately while my profession is on the list, I have no recognised paperwork for my specialisation, it simply doesn't exist. It doesn't help that I've been out of it for 5 years, so any official accreditation I have has expired for immigration purposes.

I remember playing it for a 14 hour marathon to win the European campaighn, ended up spending the last 2 hours trying to get Napoleon himself to sit still and let me crush him as he had allied with Austria.

British Empire smashing him between conquered Russia, France, Spain and Ottoman Empire. Got a warm fuzzy feeling when it came up with "you have destroyed a nation never to return again" as I was wary of actually starting a war and it was over in 6 turns.

Finally walked in the door after work.

16 hour day was not fun.

Sorry to hear about the interview Jonah. All this corporate crap is coming home to bite the UK something fierce.
