The reason for that - CCP expects to steal away and cash in on new subscriptions. Problem is this game is designed to be a long term investment and their target customers are now those with 'Instant Gratification' mentality. When those new players realize they can't pay to win and reach the 'End Game' of Eve, they'll just unsub.
As for the game becoming strictly an open free for all shooter, there's plenty of other space ship games out there that tried to go that route and they all ended up turning into Vaporware.
Anyway, I've been playing this game for over 6 1/2 years now. I watched the subscriptions and amount of players logged in rise within the first 2 years. Then CCP lost sight of the core value of this game and started making drastic changes and nerfed the hell out of the game within the past 4 yrs. Those actions have consistently reduced the amount of subscriptions and amount of active players each time. Meanwhile there's been no large influx of new subscriptions to counter that.
So yeah, I'm saying the end is near. It won't happen over-nite and it won't just shut down or burn out really quick, Eve will just slowly fade away into Vaporware.

Market manipulation, scams, ganks, piracy, pvp, etc. I include in that same group of challenges against/with other players.
Even in something purely PvE like exploration (and generally it's a solo PvE activity), the probing changes a while back on the one hand, reduced the competitive advantage the really good probers and hackers had over the average player; but now look at what CCP is starting to do with exploration in the sleeper cache sites.
Harder to scan and the exploration of the site itself is taking on more of a puzzle approach than a simple clickfest.
At least at this stage, the players that are good at scanning have a competitive advantage back again in finding the sleeper cache sites and the smart players figure out the right order to hack the cans to delay the defenses and shut off the egg explosions for a short period of time.
I totally get where you are coming from DMC. Dumbing down the game is not what I want either. The whole reason I'm attracted to Eve is for the challenge it provides that other games don't.
Guess I just have a bit of a different view on what dumbing it down means.
But all sweet. You're one of my favourite posters in the forum because you are pretty open and direct.

I never used it, but I also think it is a mistake. The bomber fleets are a drop in the bucket compared to the hisec people that use it. If it were just bomberfleet people that were going to unsub because of it, I would not think much of it. But the amount of hisec accounts that will be lost because of this will be significant enough I think it is a mistake.
