A co-worker (Mike) received a call from his wife yesterday, saying GÇ£Come home, our daughter has been in a car wreck.GÇ¥

Mike left and on the way called back to get more details. On the surface it appeared that the daughter (Katie) had called her grandmother (MikeGÇÖs mom) and said GÇ£Grandma?GÇ¥ and proceeded to beg that she not tell the parents, but Katie had cut school, got some alcohol with a girlfriend and ended up in a wreck. Her voice sounded funny because her nose was broken by the airbag deploying and she was at a police lock-up somewhere. There was a lawyer there who was telling her that he could easily make all the charges and whatnot go away, for a fee. Ten minutes later the lawyer called Grandma back and told her for $1400 the whole thing could be cleared up, then pressed to find out how quickly Grandma could get the funds.

When he got to the house Mike asked more detailed questions. Found out that the girl had never identified herself, when sheGÇÖd said GÇ£Grandma?GÇ¥ on the phone, Grandma had replied GÇ£Katie, is that you?GÇ¥ Also, KatieGÇÖs car is a 1981 Mercedes that Mike had bought for her. They donGÇÖt have airbags.

So Mike and his wife rushed to the school and found the Mercedes safely parked in the parking lot, and Katie in class.

They called the police who confirmed this scam is pretty common around the holidays. MikeGÇÖs mom is totally seething in rage, if she ever finds the GÇ£lawyerGÇ¥ he may not like what happens. He never called back as he said he would. They surmise he realized that Grandma wasnGÇÖt going to be able to come up with the money fast enough and moved on. They usually call many hundreds of numbers in the book a day, until they get someone like MikeGÇÖs mom who unknowingly puts her foot in it. GÇ£Katie, is that you?GÇ¥
