Quality Control isn't as easy as it seems... In fact it is a real royal pain to deal with everyones screw ups and head aches... Once in a while, QC even screws up themselves. Things happen, move on with life. I QC in a machine shop, in the production end of things, I deal with screw ups on a daily basis... And I make some mistakes myself, no one is ever perfect.

When you do change the file name, don't delete the old one. Don't rename the file, make a new one. Don't even touch the old boot.ini.

Edited by: Vorge on 06/12/2007 05:25:24 Well, I used system restore after I saw that my boot.ini was nowhere to be found. After that, I couldn't run EVE anymore at all. So, I uninstalled it.
Before I download it again, is it safe to download it? Or do I need to wait? How will I know when it's safe to download EVE (premium) again?

Yes, I use GRUB as well and it didn't work without setting up a boot.ini, works perfectly when you've setup a boot.ini though

Interesting thread.
I'll chime in with some equally interesting information: I uninstalled EVE prior to downloading the new (classic) client. I then installed the new (classic) client, ran it, quit the client. Downloaded the classic-to-premium upgrade, ran it, and started EVE. No issues of course.
Yet my boot.ini remains intact:
C:\>dir /a C:\boot.ini Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 1C7C-7447
Directory of C:\
09/12/2007 21:23 211 boot.ini 1 File(s) 211 bytes 0 Dir(s) 28,532,482,048 bytes free
So it appears to me this bug is only affecting some people. Possibly there's an issue with some string parser where it's using strrchr() instead of strchr() on "\". Shot in the dark...

Before you guys do anything make sure you actually have the file or not. With the windows explorer go to C:\(or whatever drive you installed windows). Then go check if you have system file hidden or not by going into the folder option menu(located under tools), click view and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". If your file shows then np, else you must try the solutions posted earlier.

Been a while since i kinda messed with duel OS, but im pretty sure that it loads, and depending on which OS u load it tells which boot.ini to load.
Pretty sure its a, i wanna load windows, ok use this... kinda thing.
Be safe, make sure your boot.ini is ok!

If u haven't rebooted yet, this is how you restore the boot.ini
right click My computer> go to Properties> Advanced tab> setup & recovery> edit> save the file that opens.
This restores the boot.ini from windows memory and unless something else was deleted it should fix the problem

CCP was infiltrated by Microsoft Spies and they put in a few lines of code to whack boot.ini in an effort to hint that if you had upgraded to vista this wouldn't have happened...

You agree to hold them blameless by installing the software.
Typical click-thru legalese like this keeps them safe, meanwhile your computer just got bricked. (only in some cases, this is repairable.)
Epic fail for not testing this. That includes rebooting machines........ I test my installers and include a reboot or 2 afterwards so.....

Well, forewarned is forearmed. I simply copied boot.ini to boot1.ini, ran the premium patch, and then renamed boot1.ini to boot.ini. Problem solved.
I do have to say, this is going to be a legendary screw-up on the part of CCP. Take off every 'Zig' !! |

They should update the MOTD and inform the people logging in. So many noobs and people that don't believe its true... I didn't believe it at first cause I rebooted with no prob, but so many posts...and some people I knew were calling me and asking me WTF? HELPS ME FIX THIS!
So yeah, CCP please use the MOTD or make an ingame annoucement please... It's not your SP I'm afraid of, It's your ship. |

CCP said on page 4 they took down the classic to premium manual patch installer. A few minutes ago i couldn't click the link. A few minutes later I could and I'm downloading as we speak. I backed up my boot.ini already and will report back here if the current upgrade patch is clean or not =)

So not really.
Fortunately I decided to stay up late and didn't turn off my computer yet. My boot.ini was gone too, even though the Premium install failed (not enough space on disk). NB I have to reinstall whole EVE precisely because I ran out of disk space - the installer didn't have any safe solution to such a simple problem and just borked the game :|

So not really.
Such a statement is completely meaningless legally. There is still nothing stopping them from being sued.
If the statement was actually enforceable, for example, if the EVE client somehow caused computers to explode, killing their operators, CCP would not be liable.

Now imagine if someone sues ccp and makes them go bankrupt and they have to kill Eve... I think r/l threats are the least the sue(er) will have to worry about
BTW... I get off work in 20 mins, if I go redownload the whole client will I get the nifty new graphics or am I currently boned till it gets fixed?

Originally by: d1v1n1ty Did you look at the contents? The pulled the patch for a bit (premium), maybe they fixed it?
The contents are correct/what they should be.
And no, the classic/premium upgrade patch is still unavailable. So the version I got was the same as what everyone else got. :-)
I'm betting it's because I install the game into D:\Games\CCP\EVE, so it probably tried to delete D:\boot.ini, which obviously doesn't exist.
EDIT: I stand corrected, sounds like the patch is back up. Maybe it's been fixed. I'm sure CCP will post something soon.
EDIT 2: Nope, patch is still unavailable from the look of it. http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/eveclassictopremiumpatch45017.exe not found. :-)

So, I just downloaded and installed the patch on my XP Home Edition computer, the boot.ini file is exactly where it was pre-patch (I had a backup just in case). At what point in the patch process is this file being deleted?
Or
Has this been fixed?
