If like me, you have SP1 windows OEM disc which does not include a repair utility,
you can try making a new file, calling it "boot.ini" save as all files in your C:\ directory with the following text in it:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
But, probably better to do the restore.

I tend to support CCP through long patches, etc. because their product is just so good. But this, this is amateurish and unprofessional to the extreme, putting something out that damages the customer's computer. All the fixes listed are well and good, but a lot of the customer base is non-techie and screwing around with install discs, rewriting system files, etc. is something they just don't know how to do.
Maybe releasing it a few hours early was not smart. Get your act together, CCP, this is really poor customer service. Really poor.

Confirming that the fixes in this thread worked. Thanks to everyone here and those who helped me--I'm like a blind man trying to pick a redhead out of a crowd of bald women when it comes to PC-related stuff, and this would have basically ended my ability to use my computer until I finished completely unpacking my house after my recent move (probably several weeks from now).
As for CCP, not much to say that hasn't been said already. This is truly a colossal ****-up, and frankly it's a crying shame that the positive press this patch should have generated will instead be overshadowed by this completely and totally unnecessary glitch. ____________________ GM Sunshine > oops Neurotica > Hate to see a GM in your gang say 'oops'

Gross negligence on CCP's part. Whoever wrote that brilliant bit of code should be brought under disciplinary review, if not one person but the whole department.

I'm still having issues with my system hanging when I restart. I still have my boot.ini file... I installed the game to C:\Games\CCP\EVE.
I get no errors at all. The only thing that happens is the computer hangs when my desktop appears. so pretty much when the system is starting-up programs.

Classic should be safe. I think a lot of people have found a reason not to upgrade to premium (at least for now). ---

Times like these I thank myself for installing EVE on the good ol' external hard-drive. Yesiree.
Checked my C:\ Drive, (seeing hidden files on) BOOT.ini's still there. I guess I dodged a torpedo-sized bullet on this one, but I sympathize for whomever's finger slipped and added an extra "\"

My Boot.ini file is still in my C: Folder after the Full Trinity install.
Could this be an issue with just "upgrading" to Trinity from the standard version?

New ship skins
New Graphics?
NO! The best part of Trinity is the look on everyone's faces when their Boot.ini went POOF.
Oh dear, well CCP godspeed to ya all in getting this fixed. And thanks to those on the forums putting up warning signs. Sig? What sig? |
