I got vista but if not mistaken there is no Boot.ini file due to the new boot processing system. I'll check prior to reboot.

Thank god I read this before installing the Trinity Premium patch.
Took a backup of boot.ini and installed the patch. Yep my boot.ini was gone too.
Backup ftw!

I will be extrememly **** if I have to reload my OS at the end of this patch.
XP64 here.
In your case just backup your boot.ini - run the installer, and if it's not where it should be after you installed, just restore the copy of boot.ini that you have. Just make sure you don't reboot until you do this!

Edited by: Cadiz on 06/12/2007 04:12:34 Oh dear lord, am I ever glad I don't have EVE installed to my C:\ partition. I think I'm also really glad I decided to just do a fresh client reinstall...oh, fortuitous timing of client preferences corruption due to a crash just a few hours before the server went down for patching! ------ Director, No Quarter "There is no problem that cannot be solved by the judicious application of violence." |

Looks like it's just the premium patch. Looks like it does not effect Vista. Looks like the premium download highjacks your PC too if it starts and does not finish.

I don't know whose idea it was to name a game file after one of the more important system files, but he should probably be kicked hard somewhere were it hurts.

i just have to laugh this has to be the single biggest os destructor patch caused by a typo. Anyhow is this affecting only ppl that had classic client and patched it? or its also problem with the premium client as downloaded
the CCP boot.ini file in the eve install folder looks to be a config file for the premium, and it sounds like it only affects people applying that.

I do not guarantee this fix for anyone.
If you make a new boot.ini and put this text in
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
Save it, and then run MSConfig from the Run box. Under the Boot.ini tab, click the "check all boot paths" to verify that you should at least be able to boot back up from one viable OS.
Otherwise read the MS technet article someone linked.
This is a pretty big FUBAR really. Bad press inbound.

I just got home from work getting ready to install and a little voice in the back of my head said "Hey, If I were you - and I am - I would read the forums before you download and install the patch."
Glad I listened for once. ________________________

Dood...you could just make up a boot.ini file...it's just a text file...as long as you know your harddrive setup...see above post.

How to edit boot.ini - Microsoft Knowledge Base
That link has an example boot.ini file that supposedly works for systems with only one OS. I made a boot.ini and moved it to C:\. I'm going to try that and pray it works.

For most setups that use the primary hard-drive with one single partition and Windows installed at c:\Windows ( you can change that below accordingly ) this ( as posted above ) will work fine for you:
Go to Start, click run and type: notepad C:\boot.ini
Because this has been freshly deleted, it will ask if you would like to create it, obviously click yes.
Now paste the following in to the text file, and save it:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
I'm not sure if this is important, but also do the following, click Start and click Run, then type: attrib +S +H +R c:\boot.ini
Goodluck, hope this helps.

I had my roommate email me a copy of his, and it worked fine on a reboot. We're both on XP Pro with no partitions, etc. So that's probably just a fortunate coincidence, though.
Edit: What Huldradans posted was exactly what his boot.ini contained, character per character.

Sure is alot of waaaan in this thread.
Msconfig, boot.ini tab...click the button that says "check all boot paths"
if you have a hal.dll error on reboot...yeah good luck. It can be fixed but its a long one and I am not posting it.

The boot.ini tab will not be there if c:\boot.ini is not present.
