Sovereign533 Caldari The Collective Against ALL Authorities	Posted - 2008.01.31 16:08:00 - [8] i read somewhere that the image web server for the images and the image server are seperated... a lot of different pictures are created every day, and they are all stored on the game server under very high resolution... each downtime only a small number of these pictures are transfered to the image web server... this means that you all have to wait in line to get it transferred... this transfer doesn't happen at extended downtimes or at downtimes where there is a patch deployed (patch can be deployed at normal downtimes without a client update)... there was a time when only 1 picture was transferred, and abotu 50% of the users on the forums had the '!' icon... or in short, you just have to wait =)

If you impress someone with your banter in the forums enough they will look you up in game and they will see your face there, online where it somewhat matters. Matters only because you are active in the game. On the other hand I could see how "some people", knowing that their face is their only avatar outside of a game, where; what you look like doesn't matter even in the slightest bit, could care that their toons face is not rendered. I've been around since before the last patch which apparently broke portrait rendering ingame (which I think is an unrelated issue?) - my portrait has never worked on the forum and currently I'm told to just wait an unspecified amount of time for it to appear magically. Managing it to the point where they have personal alts that are in alliances such as, GOONSWARM, BoB, RA....etc. These accounts, considering the wars that they are in, allow them a first hand look at how the game is being played; mechanics and all. For the good or the bad is for the individual to choose. The pro's are obvious and I would say the con's are quite obvious also. Unfortunately I had a cut-n-paste "sig" that had a link to the portrait server issue but that got snipped be CCP Mitnal. It say that what I was doing was breaking the forum. I personally have no clue why what I was doing was breaking the forums. Personally the forums take forever to load with all the picture sigs that are starting to pop up again after the way to get the sig back up has leaked out over the pst 3 weeks. Not really sure how extra text with 3 links in it can break a forum. Then aain I am pretty illiterate to how internet technology works so I cacn really not act all high and mighty. CCP, a piece of advise - you really might want to get rid of a couple of accountants and start hiring additional engineers.

Whether or not the portrait showing up in the forums is 'important' is irrelevant; the fact is it's important to enough people (myself included) to warrant so much response as evidenced by this thread. CCP knows this - but ultimately gameplay issues are far more important. I'm confident CCP will get around to this forum-portrait issue when the time is right. Until then ... I'm proud to count myself among this elite group of people whose force of character is so profound as to transcend the very problem that brought us together in the first place!

Quite honestly, if ambulation works, a new isk sink could be created where someone could pay a massive amount of isk to have a complete face over all the way to a sex change. I'm no expert on CCPs code (but I am a programmer) but it strikes me that rendering images is trivially easy in most languages. I also can't really see it being a hugely intensive process either in terms of system resources to do, plus it clearly can be written as an automated process. If there really is 200k+ portraits left to render (according to another thread), prioritise it according to those of us who are actually active in the game. I know forum portraits are low-priority, but I don't think you can write off the investment people make in their characters - even if not from a fully RP perspective. It's annoying to have to put up with the ! :(

I also started a thread asking the same question, as did many other players. As for info on the rendering process who knows. If we really want a face to go with our posts we will get a sig with our face on it. So create a sig or pay a few million isk for someone to do it for you. Otherwise, it is about what and how you post not what you look like. Something along the lines of 95% of the posts were from pilots without their images rendered. I think this is a funny read, but that may be biased opinion since I was one of the few that kept bumping it. When I firsted started posting on the forums there were multiple threads started weekly asking about this, one being one I started. More profit to be had there I'm sure.
