Ive played many mmos in my time and every time i chose a female avatar over a male. The reason? Well.. i dunno to be honest.
One thing what comes to mind is the way captains always name there boats a girls name, its kinda the same, just in a different way! xP
*Has yet too hear of a boat named Johnny*

Don't give me the lame excuse of I don't want to stare at a guy's face or it doesn't matter. When you choose a character's sex it's permanent. You can't change the sex character or even the name.
Do you regret choosing your name or gender?

I regret the names I chose for my character because;
1. I would have liked one of those two part made up names, like Chad Jenson, or Hikori Menora, or something but unfortunately nothing I can do about that now, I would pay to change it if I could but they won't let us because our names is how our enemies ingame can find us, they should give us another form of unique identity seachable ingame, such as a Concord Citizen ID or something.
2. My alt has some numbers used as letters within its name makeup, which allows supposedly maturer players to come up with certain assumptions about your age, intelligence etc...
I have no issue with my character portrait, I take no particular pride or hate in it, I can't particularly hate it because I envisage it being a portrayal of myself within the game world, on the other end I can't take any particular pride in my character portrait because its not really very personal thing, no matter how creative you try and get with the creation tool there will still be hundreds of other characters that look like your twin brother. So in the end I'm indifferent.
I think males choose female Eve characters because -
1. They are homophobic/scared lookin at a male portrait will make them ***.
2. They are able to be aroused by a crappy rendered image that resembles a female.
3. They hope males ingame will think they really are a girl and will hopefully therefore be more cooperative with them/kiss their feet.

I would have to disagree with the part about the character creation tool and hundreds of twins I mean some race/sex combinations do look vey similar to each other but I have found it extremely difficult trying to recreate a certain character to look like one I have previously made, yeah there will be people with the same hairstyle and clothing but when it comes to the facial features I'm pretty sure it's near impossible for them to be identical facial features, hairstyle and clothing.

And this I think you have very little understanding of why males chose female characters, and about the "crappy rendered image that resembles a female" are you playing the same game as everyone else? Eve has the most detailed realistic and complex character creation of any MMO I have ever played.

People getting defensive about this are funny.
As are people who have female avatars with male names. Or female avatars who make it a point to declare their manhood at every possible opportunity.
Because it's okay to play a female, but "I'll be damned if I'm gonna stand for someone believing I am a female!"
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

This was actually an alt to begin with, now it's my main. The initial idea was that my main was going to marry my alt... but then my main died. Now I am left with a widowed main. *sigh*

You would be surprised how many females play male characters to avoid male attention and the males playing female characters teach the male characters a lesson with a "I'm male" response to their rude sexist remarks.

I didn't like any of the Khanid/Amarr males, so i checked out their females, and I thought they were much nicer.
I've never had a problem playing as people of the opposite gender, especially in EVE where, for the most part, gender is not an important factor for social interactions, taking a back seat to skills, affiliations, and factions. |

its always funny how often this question comes up.
"Why do males play as female characters"
I have no idea why, I do it, have been playing a mixture of male and female characters since DAoC, depends on the race and class often to me
Male ogre who hits things with a really big axe Female saracen who stealths and stabs you in the back
When i started EVE i didn't know we weren't fully bodied avitars, i had no idea what the game was like when i make the character. I was thinking sleek sexy space pirate and made Reven Zero.
I have roleplayed as my female characters, not in eve yet but in other MMOs but only with people who i've know for a while and understand that I'm male, I don't want to give people the wrong impression

I havent been here since beginning , but I still believe it had something to do with the fact that it was a male club and universe was full of males. Probably some people decided to choose female alts for adding more females to Eve universe and then it became a normal thing. I see most people create a male character when they first stepped in Eve and once they see its very normal to play a female character here they create female alts. As time pass some of those alts become main.
Knowing %95 of Eve players are male, I still prefer treating female characters as female. Gender of person behind them doesnt matter to me. I respond what is going on in Eve. I dont think there is anything wrong playing a female character as long as you dont get offended when somebody calls you lady. |

The character and the player are two separate things, so who cares what the character's gender is and if it's different from the player's gender?

I agree with this. I don't have a problem at all with players being whatever character that they want. But I will always refer to female characters as "she", "her" etc in-game (and on forums ), even when I know they are males. But, yeah. Edited by: Mr Friendly on 15/04/2008 03:06:12 I picked a man in Eve because I am male, and I wasn't going to be staring at my ass for the rest of the game.
Other games, I usally pick female because I'm stuck staring at my ass all the time. Also, the devs usually make female toons have better sounding screams and noises when doing things (get your mind out of the gutter).
If I was q u e e r, I'd probably pick a male character.
I don't consider 'choosing esthetically' to be an odd choice.

I created a few characters when I first started EVE since I had no idea what to do. My main was a male, as my mains in all other MMOs I have played were males and then I would play female alts to try new stuff and new character creation looks. Also I'm an RPer and I like to RP both sides. Helps with trying to figure out how to write females when writing stories (aspiring author)
But with this game, I took a liking to the personality i developed with Cloora, funny thing is my wife started an Achura female and we played for about 6 months together before she quit. Now I have that character as another alt. I also started a Male Khanid alt because I like thier visor/helmet thingy and I like the Khanid Kingdom backstory. (more RPer stuff I know) |

Edited by: Isobe Mitsu on 15/04/2008 03:16:17 I see a lot of defensive posts in this thread and some of my posts were a bit defensive, I mean there's obviously some insecurities attached to males playing female characters. The OP didn't really say anything offensive about males playing females he was apparently just asking the question why and perhaps wanting to understand why. I would suggest any male who has never made a female character to make one and see what it's like for yourself, see if you like your character then you will better understand why others do it. Of course we are male and get a bit defensive if anything might threaten our masculinity this sounds quite ludicrous considering the situation we are putting ourselves in. Heh! Well anyway I think people are getting a little defensive including myself but it's not necessary the OP was just opening the discussion which I'm glad he did.
A little more insight into why I play them. It's like if you read a book or watch a tv show or movie and a character in the program that you like for example Rommie from Andromeda so you really like this character you're glad that the actress plays that character, you might not enjoy the show so much if she wasn't there, this is how I feel about my female characters I see them like I see the characters in a book or on TV or in a movie. |

I've seen all 3 of my reasons come up in this thread at least once, they might not be the most common reasons (Although I certainly think 2 and 3 score quite high) but they register.
On the spot impulsiveness comes up I bet.
Ok, crappy rendered image was a little harsh, but it still looks nowhere near like a real person to me, and nor would I want it to.
