why do guys do this, thats easy make a waif like fem char and play noob/helpless, and see how fast u aquire things! besides the drooling followers of course. some guys are trying to figure out women ,some may understand eventually. Really Most of all, Its to pull all the scams and other nefarious woman things/tricks that have been played on men since the beginning of the 1st relationship. And anyone that thinks they are going to FOOL other women online are sadly mistaken, women do not type/speak the same way as men do. Its like fingerprints. People who think guy's are crude, should hang out in a women only chat channel and keep their yap shut! if they really want the truth of the matter. men are nice guys! Tsk tsk. Women in general type/speak differently to men in general. However there's so much variation within both groups that the general rule is worthless.
One person who got surprised (though not in the ONOES manner) to find me having a male(ish) voice on TS was female. Then again I am also frequently accused of being speshul.

To be honest, I don't think that most, not even many, of those who play a different gender do so for a role-playing reason. I think the often stated "oooh - Boobies! *drool*" is quite true.
I would assume that it's rather those who are true to their gender that are roleplaying. Even if it's just a small bit of RP, by saying "That is ME in there.". I try to create my characters to look like I would ideally look like, while keeping some relation to my true look. -------------------------------------------------- I'm a rich person. How I know? While I don't at all agree that role-playing a character of opposite gender would be the "ultimate fantasy" (how would that happen - cyber yourself much?), the boob hypothesis has one pretty big problem: there's no boobs in eve. Well okey, the Gal fem model can be made to show something like a few centimetres of cleavage, which on-screen gets reduced to like 5 pixels. Mmm sexey.
That said, I shall have to try out this thing with cyboring myself.

Originally by: Joceb I guess only guys who are comfortable with their sexuality can play female characters?
Yup, more than likely. Although I do find it kind of funny when you get the "matcho alpha males" *coughs* start ranting and raving saying "You're playing a female, you're ***, there's something wrong with you, you're a freak".
I mean really, get a grip of your homophobic, xenophobic tendencies for a moment and see how silly you look. It clearly points to the fact you're scared of something, have an "issue" in your own mind with it. Everyone sees this, so just keep shouting - it's very entertaining.
Originally by: KeeperOf Truth I havent been here since beginning , but I still believe it had something to do with the fact that it was a male club and universe was full of males. Probably some people decided to choose female alts for adding more females to Eve universe and then it became a normal thing. I see most people create a male character when they first stepped in Eve and once they see its very normal to play a female character here they create female alts. As time pass some of those alts become main.
Knowing %95 of Eve players are male, I still prefer treating female characters as female. Gender of person behind them doesnt matter to me. I respond what is going on in Eve. I dont think there is anything wrong playing a female character as long as you dont get offended when somebody calls you lady.
I control the character in EVE, so to all intents and purposes people interacting with me call me "she". No, I wouldn't get offended if someone called me "lady" because that's the choice of character I made. Likewise, I doesn't bother me either way. I still call guys who play female characters "she" because it's their *character* I'm referring to, not them personally. They don't take offence at that either.
Why did I choose a female character?
Because I wanted to. It's a character in a game. I don't mind how I am represented, and others are entitled to their opinion of me. I am quite comfortable being a guy playing a female character.
If it's something you're not comfortable with then don't do it, or just don't talk to me but at least have the decency to respect others choices without assuming they have "issues". It's more likely you have issues because you are raising the subject and feel a need to voice it.
Originally by: Hannobaal The character and the player are two separate things, so who cares what the character's gender is and if it's different from the player's gender?
Well said! Shame not everyone sees it that way, but I guess the whole "guy playing a female" is much too complicated for the 14 year old awash with hormones boy
Originally by: Zurrar i had a female char once, it was easy to play like a chick and get free stuff from the lonely guys in eve... its quite funny

I have to agree with this. I have never hung out in a womens chat channel, but I have traveled with one of the US's elite College Softball teams for a full season. OOO Boy are they ten times worse then any baseball team I have ever traveled with. I actually had to hold down food at a Chinese Buffet once when the girls/ladies were talking about cunilingous. Not that I find that topic disturbing at all, but they took it too a whole new level.

Originally by: Tatsue Nuko Picked my char gender because the planned character for it fit better with a female. Kinda like how male authors sometimes have female protagonists in their novels and/or movies. (Yeah, I'm one of them weird RPers. :P )
Later I found that it also meant I'd be getting lots of free stuff from people, as well as cause some people to go "WTFNOOOO" when I first got on vent or TS with them. Always amusing. :D
I have since then obtained a licensed copy of MorphVOX, for added lols. Sadly nowadays everyone knows I'm male IRL so I never got to fool anyone with it - but making corpies freak out is funs.
I did manage to convince one person that I had undergone sex reassignment surgery, though. Weirdly, after that point he didn't like me anymore. Strange that.

But Im not, Im very manly 6.1 feet 170lbs and a deep voice and Im very confortable with myself, so being a female ingame is just so much more profitable.
MUAHAHA...Im so clever...and cool... I love myself.

Consider all of the magazines with females on the covers. Why do the vast majority of magazines, especially ones read by females, have females on the cover?

Heh, this is certainly one of the most commonly-reoccurring general forum topics in the history of Eve true enough - seems a point of enduring mystery to some people. But I think the dev guy nailed it earlier on - Eve online wouldn't seem half as stylish and sexy if 99.9% of the galaxy population looked like unreal tournament style prisonyard daddies cruising for "wives" in space.

Well, I don't primary as a female, but I'm not totally innocent.
My main is a male, and honestly he doesn't look too bad for a somewhat slapped together main over 2 years ago. Eh, w/e, it's grown on me, I like it, not totally scary or wanna be evil like a lot of the minnies you see out there.
So I eventually felt my main was lonesome :P So cue my alt, she's female and amarr, she's actually mildly cute in a way... guess it's my own little mental image, or maybe I'm just lonesome, who knows! \o/
So I'm on a split 50/50, my main's not opposite sexed and usually never is in an mmo, but if I create an alt... it's more than likely going to be female, just to balance it out and give me something to look at when I grow bored of staring at my main.
That said, I have no real issue with people playing as opposite genders, but when they take it a lil too far or it gets out of hand... then it's a bit of a concern. Sides, all these females need the ma- ah nevermind that's a discussion for another forum.

Originally by: Akita T Hmm... let's see. The main schools of thought: A) you ARE your character or B) you CONTROL your character
People from the "B" train of thought would never have a problem with their avatar being a different gender.
I rarely post but I will throw into this thread. I am of both schools...depending on the medium. When I would play text based games I always played male as generally I would "sink" into the character. While I would usually have a "me" I would have other characters that would have very different traits to RP out fringe traits that can not be indulged without being chased by angry people with guns and a small room with bars reserved for me.
When I started playing graphicals (so much regret) I gradually started adding in female characters because I never RP with them, I do not identify with them. They are just actors on a stage that I can push around. I will generally choose gender then based on the role to some degree, though usually for me the race would matter more there. Generally it is the better designed model for the race I pick.
An example would be from WoW, my first graphic game. I played a Tauren as my first couple of mains (server hopping to keep with friends) cause the female model felt wrong. When I could stand to play alliance, I would choose a female elf cause the male ones were built so wrong.
With Lotro I picked a female elf, though it was a tough call. I made a female human, also a close call, and I regret it now and wish I had chosen male cause of some of the later armour. The sex of the character does not matter to me. I solo a lot, or just play with friends so comms never bothered me, though sometimes I am thrown off stride when I PUG as some people do view it as odd.
*I would have every profession rolled, these are just a couple of examples from each game.
There is the aspect of enjoying a visually pleasing avatar as well. This does not have to mean female though, as some female models just are not as well designed as the males, depending on the game.
The fact that I always handled most women much better in RL than most guys I encountered (outside chums that were good friends). The 6 years I spent managing a strip club enforced my gender security and enforced my comfort level with the female gender (though some can still twist me around their fingers). I generally view the female sex as the superior one, especially when it is a female with their head screwed on straight so that also factors into gender choices. Though again some roles just scream male and some scream female in most MMORPGs.
But to cut it down to the base level....I futz around with the character creation after picking a race that best fits my view of the profession, play with models and names until something clicks and I commit the changes with little real concern to gender at either that time or during later game play in most instances.
**Yes, my male Gal portrait is ugly. I was going for crazy and not cool. Besides, if I spent any length of time on the model the game would time me out and I would have to start over the creation process, which was a pain before they scrubbed it the last few times. --------------------- "Men are plain and simple.
