You are linking people prefering a female portrait over a male portrait with being homophobic or "scared to look at a male portrait because it will make them g.a.y" where did anyone in the whole thread mention homophobia or looking at a male portrait makes them g.a.y? who mentioned being aroused? in this whole thread who mentioned any of these things? only you.
And I take offense to this.
Quote: I think males choose female Eve characters because -
1. They are homophobic/scared lookin at a male portrait will make them ***.
2. They are able to be aroused by a crappy rendered image that resembles a female.
3. They hope males ingame will think they really are a girl and will hopefully therefore be more cooperative with them/kiss their feet.

"What sane male would want to look at a male face everyday" (paraphrased) kind of strikes me as insecurity more than anything else. Perhaps if it was said differently...
I mean I would say that most of the men who play MMOs play as males and I don't question their mental well-being. But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

I won't be offended at all (having male and female characters across several MMOs...in fact my mains in two other games are both male)...
You just might be in for a surprise the first time I'm on voice chat.

Boffins from the University's International Gaming Research Unit, part of the Psychology faculty, discovered that women were more likely to take on male roles in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs), with 70 per cent admitting that they had done so. Men seem to be less inclined (although not by much) to explore their feminine side with only 54 per cent strutting their stuff as a female persona.

That's funny, I don't remember taking that survey.
Even assuming that was accurate, I'm not questioning the sanity of the remaining 46%. But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

Oh I am sure there are females out there playing. During my WoW days, some of the best players in my guild were female (including one who also teaches some science course at a university) and used female characters.
Going back to what Keeperof Truth said though...an old friend of mine (again from my WoW days) called a character "she" in a group, to which he got the response "umm...I'm a guy in RL." His response to that? "If your toon has boobs, you're a she to me" lol.

Yeah and your point? I don't care if you think I'm a prejudice sexist jerk on the internet.
I think what it means is that you're not secure in your masculinity.
Guys who are secure in their masculinity can play female characters without thinking it's weird.

As are people who have female avatars with male names. Or female avatars who make it a point to declare their manhood at every possible opportunity.
Because it's okay to play a female, but "I'll be damned if I'm gonna stand for someone believing I am a female!"
I used to play Guild Wars and one night I was bored and discussing philosophy or something in town and someone asked if I was female IRL (I had a female character) and I didn't answer, because I normally don't think it matters and they guessed that I was female because if I were male, I'd would have said so at the risk of them thinking I was actually female IRL.
To me, it doesn't matter what sex the person playing a character is, unless you get to know them well, in which case you'll probably get to know the person behind the character and thus, their sex. A character is a character--a player is a player. I have no problem keeping the two separate.

Interesting thread.
I've had/read this discussion before and I think there are many reasons.
Some have been quoted already, I really think that the eye candy thing is a serious point. Although someone can take the extreme opinion of thinking that anyone that wants to get lubed up over a pixelated cartoon women is perverted, it is I think never the less true that female icons are better more interesting to look at than male icons, as far as men are concerned.
I mean, if you REALLY didn't think that Jessica Rabbit was HAWT, I'd think there was something wrong with YOU. :) Indeed, the entire Hentai industry is built up on the principle that female cartoons can often appeal to something inside an individual that real women cannot.
There are a few others that I think should be taken into consideration.
I think that it is possible that a long term MMO player can end up thinking that they <should> play a male avatar, and create so many, that they literally create a female avatar because they are bored.
Kinda like giving in one day and shoving a banana in your ass just to see what all the fuss is about.
The other argument I've given a lot of credence to, is that if you create a character whom you live out a certain kind of freedom with, then you may naturally want to try things that you cannot do in real life (yarr!). Creating a female avatar as a male is a way of distancing yourself from your own persona, and consequently elevating the sense of freedom and experimentation you experience.

Don't give me the lame excuse of I don't want to stare at a guy's face or it doesn't matter. When you choose a character's sex it's permanent. You can't change the sex character or even the name.
Do you regret choosing your name or gender?
Because secretly, we want to have a sex change IRL. Really, it's very, very Freudian.
Every single guy who has a female avatar IRL is a 9ay trans-sexual.

Nope.
This toon is a male, but on the same account I have 2 female alts, my second account is a reversal of this one, the main is female and the 2 alts are males. I have no prefference at all when it comes to which sex my avatar is, though this may change depending on the parameters available to us with the deployment of ambulation
If nothing else, I don't think about what sex my avatar is because all I ever really see is the hull of my hurricane

For the same reason that we aren't caldari, minmatar or minmatar IRL and we still choose to play one, you can choose to play another gender than you really are.
Or, like a conversation I had in WOW;
him: R u female me: no him: then why U play female LOLROFL me: are you Tauren IRL? him: no me: then STFU

my first character was a male inataki and i was pretty happy with him... until i realized how bad a 3 in perception relly is went to inform myself about the stats again and decided to play as achura. and then the whole "ugh, a male achura""-thing kicked in. when you sit there for several hours and try to make some nice looking character and then realize that the only way to make a male achura look good is to show as few as possible of him... you just give up and make a female one.
as for other mmos - people like good looking characters and since most female ones have the best animations and style(here we are in eve again ) people just make female characters and enjoy the game. i know i do :-)

I've moderated on 2 and owned one MMORPG (all web-based) and the reason for choosing an off-gender avatar seems to vary depending on age-group.
younger guys (teens) seem to play as females to get "free stuff"
older guys do it for roleplay reasons, for a change or, in the case of games with a 3rd persion view, because they prefer to look at a female avatar (the last applies to teens as well).
Females in general tend to play males for either the same reasons as older males play females or simply to avoid the "wanna cyber" attitude of the lonlier guys out there.
the above are generalisations of course and there are exceptions.
I personally prefer to RP as a guy and haven't RP'd as a female but do not rule out the possibility in the future.
