Location: Leaning Tower Cafe The coffee this morning was different; not necessarily bad, just different. I asked the waitress about it and she said that they changed brands. No further explanation was given because she was busy and whisked by as she answered. I am embarrassed to say that a thought occurred to me that afterwards I saw as very arrogant and self-important. "Why didn't they ask me before changing coffee brands." I wish I could have stopped the thought before it snuck out, but at least I didn't verbalize it. However, I realize just by the presence of the thought, how easy it is to become convinced of our own self-importance. As I look around the caf+¬, I realize that I am no more important than anyone else sitting here, sipping their coffee. I think I'll leave an extra large tip this morning. Social Barbarism vs. Social Discipline Where should our evolution take us?
We humans exercise social discipline. Social discipline enables us to willingly decide to behave differently with each other than our base drives may indicate. Social Discipline enables us to engage in diplomacy, government, and social organizations at many levels. Social discipline enables us to conquer the urge to destroy others of our own kind in an effort to dominate. We have evolved this ability not only that we may survive as a whole but also that we may thrive and form thriving societies.
ButGǪ Social Barbarism is not yet the evolutionary vestige that it ought to be. Social barbarism is that base drive that gives impetus to domination, violence and the subduing of others. It is the GǣtakeGǥ impulse whereas Social Discipline is the GǣaskGǥ volition. Social barbarism is rooted in impulse and social discipline is rooted in volition. Social Barbarism is an evolutionary dead-end. It may appear to work temporarily when local communities or cultures are in competition, but it cannot work on a galactic scale. Social barbarism is hopelessly inflexible and is based on a rigidity that will eventually fold in on itself.
Social discipline allows a plurality of cultures to carve out a buffer of time to explore cultural elements that are compatible or at least tolerant. It is flexible and self-sustaining. Social discipline is a later development while social barbarism is primitive. It is time for us as disparate cultures to make social barbarism the vestige it needs to be while embracing Social Discipline as the norm.

The level of crudeness and vulgarity often expressed in this forum is a sad commentary on how little social discipline we have. I recently read some very base and primitive comments by someone with both the education and social position to know better.
We must learn to not respond in kind to those who lower themselves to the primordial soup of insult. If the sophistication applied to tearing others down verbally were applied to reasonable argument, imagine how much greater this forum would be. The problem becomes compounded when the blinders of arrogance prevent us from seeing our own verbiage for what it is. We need to ask ourselves more often, "Did that really come out of my mouth?" |

Eerily quiet. Very seldom do we encounter such a lack of activity around the major commerce traffic areas on patrol. There was not one Concord ship; not one customs ship. There were very few other ships. We all noted the curious lack of activity. The report above was from an earlier patrol as we did not discover any cans either. We decided to head back to the center. A peppermint tea was ordered at the Leaning Tower as a change of pace. |

Now and then we rescue groups who, for whatever reason, are separated from one another. We see it most notably during disembarkation. I am not referring to simply friends and family seeking each other in reunion; this is something more persistent. In the second rescue, I reported it to reflect this. In this case and also in other cases we have reported, the separated groups are usually highly fearful and disoriented after rescue. Often they are former slaves who had been recently traumatized or had been highly isolated while in slavery. Our challenge is to "matriculate" these very carefully with a high level of therapy, sensitivity, and gentleness. One significant step that we often look for is the first meal taken in the commons. When that happens, usually integration proceeds much more rapidly. We'll watch of the next few days. |

"Would you care for our exclusive service agreement on that new module sir?" No thanks; my mechanics are quite capable of servicing and repairing our ships and modules. "But..." It took nearly ten minutes to beg off the salesman and escape his pitches for a service agreement on a simple capacitor module for the DSS Assist. Each pitch was more oriented toward fear than the previous. Fear tends to make us spend too much in the wrong places ending up with the same risks and insecurities. The service contract industry seems to built on this human capacity. The pitch has that emotional edge and almost always creates an inner doubt. Ironic that the question begged is seldom asked, "If your product is so great, why bend over backward to convince me that it will most certainly break and put me in need of your service contract?"

I have received word from DSTON development to prepare for changes in the administration of supply production for our centers. This will impact primarily water and food production facilities planetside. Right now, we are at high surplus in these areas but no doubt that is not always guaranteed. Develpoment says that we will need to do more in the area of flexibility. Setting up and taking down production facilities may become more of the routine in the future. Non-violence requires constant adjustment because violence is never the answer regardless of how convenient an answer it may be. |

The suspect timer...an automatic timeout to catch up on paperwork, check ship systems, grab a quick cup of coffee. If only it were so. The life of the capsuleer on these quick station pauses, necessarily means waiting in the pod. Unless I am prepared to de-pod, cleanup, and take a longer break, otherwise in the pod I wait. On a rescue like the one reported, I monitor the disembarkation and the crew reports on preparations for return to patrol. I'll meet the new Matriculants when I have time to spend out of the pod. For now the crew is getting ready for a quick turn around and back out we go. I do hope there will come a time when the technology will be such that we need no longer float in this sea of isolation. |

The 10 Tourists and 4 Pilots were all from Gallente Space. We transported them to our Ation Center where they can arrange for interbus transport wherever they wish or take advantage of our hospitality as long as they wish. Those infected with the Oura infomorph have undergone intitial evaluations in Kaap and will join the others in Ation for residential care. We have begun a new "validation therapy program" until a way is found to restore their former identities. 33 injured slaves with long term disabilities have been transferred to care facilities in Ation where they will receive more advanced physical and occupational therapy. We also provide employment through our development office there. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

Today there is a compelling need for the wise to discern the subtle differences between "loyalty" and "centrism." Loyalty to one's nation, culture, and family involves a broad view that sees not just the near term but the long term. Loyalty isn't rigid or myopic. It is visionary. Loyalty to one's culture does not require disrespect of other cultures nor does it involve a closed mind to the growth and evolution of one's own culture to embrace the new. Centrism is closed, bigoted, prejudiced and fearful. Those who confuse Loyalty with Centrism often justify their ignorance and violence with the claim of loyalty. Actually, Cultural Centrism turns out to be one of the most disloyal ways of life, for it most assuredly eventually spells the doom of the very culture. So it begs the question, "Who among you is loyal?" The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

Abigail is her name. She is an orphan that we rescued some time ago. Her parents were murdered by a slaver raiding party on her village. They were looking for children to traffic in the seamy underworld of major trade stations in the State and Federation. We rescued her when the pilot crossing the border dumped her into space. She has been undergoing both remedial education and psychological treatment for PTSD. Overall, she has been doing well. May Cotton, our social programs director has indicated that she believes that Abigail is ready for the adoption process. I believe they were bounty hunters; there were three of them. They were on us very quickly even though we did not have a suspect tag. There was little warning and we barely escaped. We suffered structural damage to the DSS Mayflower and some crew injuries are reported.
This attack troubles me because, once again, it was almost disastrous. Mine was the fault for again sliding into the "routine" mentality. We have taken many precautions in procedure and method to protect ourselves once we are criminally tagged but we have not taken into account what happened today. The fact that we took as much damage as we did was due to my marginal skills as a pilot. I wish I could say I am getting better at this, but apparently not. That said, I recorded some new pre-patrol procedures that will be a part of every flight from now on. It will not prevent attack, but it will raise the likelihood of survival.
I am going to go and visit injured crew members now. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

We believe they are a group of drug dealers trying to smuggle their wares into the lucrative Jita drug market. However, these militant drug dealers did not account for the capsuleer pilot willing to take their transport fare but not willing to risk customs fines. Either that or the pilot got caught and was destroyed. The dealers are not talking. Eventually, they will end up in our Yulai center. The corpse is a bit of a mystery. We are not sure of the drug dealers were involved in the death or not.
In other news: For the first time since we opened our Matriculation Program, one of our rescued orphans is likely going to be adopted by a capsuleer couple. Remaining anonymous for now, the couple has undergone required foster care training, home evaluation, and screening and is prepared for the process of adopting the orphan Abigail, mentioned in several posts. We are excited and hopeful that this will be good for all involved. May Cotton, our Social Programs Director has initiated contact with the couple. We are preparing to hand the process over to the couples local HHS jurisdiction for the remainder of the process just as soon as we hear back from the couple. SCC has granted Abigail "injured slave" status due to her PTSD diagnosis. This is a positive development, because it means her travel papers are good for all jurisdictions. There were four deathcans in the second report above. The last was jettisoned just as we were finishing transport on the third. Because we were already tagged and in immediate danger of being targeted, we did not get the pilot name on the last can. We were just glad to get all the people out and safely to the Kaap center.
Now and then, pilots abandon Khumaaks on the borders between the other Empires and Amarrian space. They are illegal to possess in Amarrian space, so pilots jettison them before entering. In the public bio of the last pilot listed in the report above is a statement summarized by the claim that "everyone is out to get you." I see this root of cynicism as a pervasive poison in our culture. Is it true? Surely, some people are out to get you, but not everyone.
I am not out to get you.
If... you placed me in null sec space with a heavily armed and defended ship and you were in a poorly armed and defended ship, I would not attack and destroy you. I am not out to get you.
If...I found a way to hack into your account and take all your ISK, I wouldn't do it. I am not out to get you.
If...I knew just what to say to hurt your feelings, I wouldn't speak those words. I am not out to get you.
I refuse to succumb to the notion that everyone is out to get everyone else. While there may be few such people out there, I believe that there are some who will not take advantage of others just because they can. There are still those even in the hostility of our universe who restrain their own bent to be hostile. We have choice; we can become better people. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

It isn't that often that we see a pilot discarding commodities along with passengers. Such was the case in the second report above. Mining operations that use slave labor sometimes dispatch mining crews across borders with included supplies for an extended stay. If they contract with a capsuleer pilot for transport, they take the risk of never arriving at their destination. Such was the case here. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

I'm guessing that the confiscated ammo was the by-product of the destruction of a Talos. In our work, we see these ships frequently and we see what capsuleer pilots do with these ships. Almost without exception, aggressive pilots purchase or build these vessels for the sole purpose of mindlessly destroying others. There is no value other than the value of violence. These disposable battlecruisers satisfy the bloodlust of those who pilot them. Pity the crews who must man these vessels.

Never assume that laws within a system or groups of systems are consistent with each other. Unfortunately, the legal system is not like nature. Politics have determined that laws governing such things as inter-sovereignty slave transport do not impact intra-sovereignty slave sales between capsuleers. Apart from all the arguments and endless debate regarding slavery and religion, slave ownership among capsuleers remains a highly unreligious matter.
Those we rescue are technically "owned" by any number of capsuleers religious, pagan, atheistic... They are not object of religious devotion by Holders and somehow lost or stolen. They are object of commerce bought and sold on the capsuleer market. Until and unless their legal status is changed and they become unsalable, they remain so objectified.
DSTON believes that ultimately, all slaves that pass out of slave territories should automatically be given a new legal status whereby they cannot be sold. We don't hold our breath in hope that this will happen, but we bring it up now and then as a matter of value The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

Due to the unexpected illness and hospitalization of one our academic center instructors, I was called upon to proctor semester examinations yesterday between patrols. It turned into a busier than normal day. This morning, a single person was rescued from a deathcan. These situations always touch me deeply. There middle-aged man was OK; a bit traumatized as expected. I spoke to him on coms while in transit and then again in the hangar. "What happened?" He didn't know. His holder simply told him that he was being sent to manage a mining party a few systems away. What he was not told was that the mining party was located in the State. Non-capsuleer pilots rarely accept illegal fares in high security space. Unlike us capsuleers, if destroyed by customs, there's a good chance your dead and not coming back. The man was dumped at the border.
"Do you want to return to your holder?" "No" He went on to say that his life and treatment were not bad. He was educated in technical skills and management skills, was well housed and cared for. "Were you born a slave?" "No, I was on an engineering crew aboard an Astral Mining ore boat when it went adrift after a reactor failure. My lifepod took me into Amarrian territory..." His story is typical of a good portion of those we encounter. His "holder" was a business man who owned a small, multi-generational mining company. When asked if he wished to continue his religious education, he responded, "What religious education?" Apparently, religion was not part of his experience as a slave.
This is not always the case, but is often the case. I can state this as a generalization that seldom has exceptions: Religious Holders do not ship off their slaves illegally across borders The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

I have not yet exited my pod, but am making this journal entry while watching a monitor of 108 new residents walking down the egress ramp of the DSS Mayflower. We just arrived from Ashokon where we met Captain Kazha Cavin-Guang for the first time. These 108 were rescued by him and welcomed to our Matriculation program.
Many of the center residents like to be present at the egress area when we return from patrol to greet the newly rescued people and help where they can. The faces that these 108 see as they exit the ship are faces like their own who also have been rescued. Those who have been here a while understand the looks of apprehension and anticipation written on the faces of these new residents. I look forward to taking my evening meal with some of the new arrivals. Let hope and optimism rule the day and light the future for these 108 men, women, and children.
Well-done, crew of the DSS Mayflower. Our return trip took us through Gallente, Concord, and State territories requiring seamless cloak operation and a concentrated focus. Two reports (IGS posts) of deathcans in Ashokon with 12 hours. A long time ago, we looked at that system when deciding where to concentrate our patrols. Being few in number, we decided that the traffic within that system was light in spite of the fact that it is the border crossing in that area. We may investigate patrolling it at least now and then. The problem is that we have no way of knowing when we need to be there vs when we need to be other places. The crossing from the Mandate into the Republic also has occasional deathcans. I was able to convince an associate to conduct patrols on Ashokon at least for a limited time. As a direct result, 38 people were saved today. I'm hoping we can convince this pilot to continue patrolling on a regular basis. Since there are three stations in the system, the resources and infrastructure is readily available for a temporary center and maybe a permanent center. Dr. Naltkh is sending staff from Edmal today. For now, 38 people are being tended to with basic means until new staff can set up the center. We may select a facility across the border instead. Part of this depends on the piloting methods of whoever happens to be patrolling. Most rescues near gates can be most safely executed using a gate jump followed by cloaked flight to station. We'll make that determination later today. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

I care not what association you hold if you have refugees who need shelter and care, we will take them under our wing. Let me clarify, if a Matriculant wishes to leave our centers and go elsewhere, we will help them do so as we have in the past. We have detailed how this has happened in past posts. Let me clarify, never have we nor never will we sell any Matriculant once they are in our care. We also will never hand over any detainee to the death penalty, slavery or torture. There.
Those who wish to "conclude the worst" about us and our work will do so regardless. But... the work goes on anyway. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

That's interesting, because 38 slaves are the exact same number that i pulled out of a cargo module floating off the Emsar gate in the Ashokon system, on this date and some time before that timeframe.
Dehydrated a bit, but otherwise good shape after my medic took a look at them. They are doing well and out of Amarr territory. Nothing Personal - Just Business...

Rescue Report:
115.11.24 18:45 Lucius Tark'in 45 people, Ballak Churon 10 people and 10 people
Mission cargoes involving the transport of slaves sometimes involves customs status that treats the cargo as a whole (group of slaves) and sometimes as an individual. When it is the latter, the same customs penalties are enacted at border crossings. It may be that there are a number of identical agent missions being issued that involve certain numbers of slaves in transit. We have found that 10 is the single most common number we have seen. The second report above was of a single can yet the 20 people were in two equal groups.
We'll keep an eye on Ashokon for a while even though we have not seen a lot activity there in the last 24 hours. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |
