Three things. One, will any threads from the deleted boards be deleted, or will they be archived(and if so, where?). Two, please don't make CAOD an in-character forum - it might drive the denizens out, and then they'd pollute worthwhile boards.
Third, and by far most importantly, this is an absolutely trivial change. I saw the fact that there was a dev blog about forum changes, and I was hoping for some actual progress on the real issues this board has - appallingly short character limits, random logoffs(to the point of having to log in ten times to make a post on occasion - yes, this happens to me a fair bit), a search functionality at least as useful as a library's pre-computer card catalogue would be, and many others. Instead, it's a change to a dozen sentences of descriptor text, and a merger of some little-used boards.
I think I speak for everyone who has ever used these forums when I say that what we wanted to see from a dev blog on the forums was real changes. Rip out the code base and start fresh, because the one you have now sucks. It's not that the changes mentioned in this dev blog are bad, because they aren't, it's just that they're meaningless. If your forums can't even come up to the standards of a 12 year old who downloaded phpBB off Sourceforge - and right now, they don't - then descriptor text and which topics go in which subforums are really the least of your concerns. ------------------ Fix the forums! |

Yeah, QFT here. Typical CCP reaction TBH: fix what isn't broken and ignore what is.

I wouldn't go quite that far. They're a business, and they operate like one. They look for the easiest jobs with the highest rewards(usually defined by subscriber base), and they have limited resources. I respect that. This is why I usually mock "Fix the lag" threads - I don't expect them to cure cancer tomorrow either, no matter how nice it would be. And there are some genuine problems that they do fix - heavy interdictors, for example, were a great patch to a real problem of untackleable supercapitals in lowsec/post-DDD.
The thing I don't get is why some of the really easy problems still remain unsolved, and the forums are probably the worst of these(hence its presence in my sig - it's not the most important issue, but it's the most head-smackingly obvious). I've known some truly stupid people who used freeware to make a better, more stable, more functional forum in an evening than a software company with 200 employees and a budget in the tens of millions can seem to manage in five years. They picked the hard solution of coding their own, they got a significantly worse result for their efforts, and they still haven't fixed it. For that matter, take the Search bar and point it at either www.eve-search.com or www.google.com site:www.eve-online.com, and I don't much care which. It would take literally five minutes, and it would double the functionality of the website, especially for the new players who don't know their way around and want to find out what this whole "tracking" thing is. Do that, and then come back to me about which forum goes where in the front page. Or better yet, skip your coffee break and do both. ------------------ Fix the forums! |

Edited by: Hober Hardin on 13/08/2008 06:35:04 Just a small point, but in the Eve Marketplace, whats the point in continuing the Want Ads & Trade, and the Price Check forums? They do have a few posts now and again but they're rarely answered and don't have that many reads. Why not just have Timecode Bazaar, Character Bazaar, and In-Game Bazaar, and just use each one for it's relevant [WTS], [WTB], [WTT], & [PC]?

Seriously CCP, some of your changes don't make ANY sense. Forum funcfionality is veery low and you manage to remove usefull forum areas. Finish the freaking SEARCH and make forums readable ingame. THEN **** off people by unecesary forum nerfs. --- SIG --- CSM: your support is needed ! |

Bad Bad Bad decision on CCPs part. API is GROWING and needs the support of these forums to continue. If you start pushing API and tech related threads that are, you know, useful, into other forums they will be swamped by the general trash that exists everywhere else. Combine that with the uselessness of the search feature and it makes everyone's lives harder. Keep the forum, put it at the bottom or the tech area, and support 3rd party endeavors.
QFT on the QFT. This really, really needs reconsidering. Archives of techlab discussions are invaluable to 3rd party developers and artists, amongst other parties. Pushing 3rd party devs to a 3rd party forum is hardly going to breed discussion between CCP and 3rd party devs- a rift that appears to be growing rapidly, not shrinking.
Happy with all the other changes but the Tech Lab, despite being low-traffic, has a wealth of historical information and many knowledgeable readers to help out with API and datadump issues of other third party developers.
PLEASE do not get rid of this forum, or if you do, at least provide a suitable replacement. --------------------------------------

Since it is probably not possible to make a whine-filter, could you at least try to add some way to block specific posters - like that Monkey script thing that has was floating around.
There are altogether too many trolls/whiners/alts/counter-whiners etc. for the forum to be used for anything other than a laugh once in a while.
PS: Personal pet peeve of mine. Auto delete all posts containing less than 10 characters. This is a written medium not a conversation at a bar, the "lolz", "c/d" etc are a blight and a disgrace to all sentient life forms.

The Tech Lab is where all of the 3rd party programmers hang out, and is generally an excellent place for us to communicate among each other, and stay in contact with the devs over what's going on with the API. Removing it will be far more detrimental than the extra bit of space it takes up on the forum listing. These changes make it pretty clear the people in charge are utterly clueless and don't use the forums they control.
Nice job replying to the questions about alliance tournament too, oh wait you didn't you just killed the forum where the questions were being asked and then ignored them in this thread.

while you're changing the forums, can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE not have "New Dev Blog" titles but have them numbered as well? The dev blogs from x weeks / months back are no longer new.
It would make it much easier to spot the latest blogs.

* Posts within last day, last week, last month, last year. * Search thread titles or titles & content * Search posts by author * Sort results by author, recency of posting, relevance.
QFT The thing I've missed most on this forum.
Originally by: Dern Morrow The Tech Lab is invaluable for communication about the EVE API. It would be a shame to see it go away.
QFT The only useful section I've ever read on this forum.
Sidenote to CCP: If you really don't want your customers to use your forum why not close it altogether. That's way less time consuming then reworking it so that all your customers flee to 3rd party forums. ---------------

Edited by: Karanth on 13/08/2008 19:43:44 This "refinement" reminds me of the time that all the belts in B-7LYC were turned into Veldspar after one patch. Including the ice belt.
What exactly is the point of this shuffle? There are a few dozen other issues that loom over the boards like a nerdrage-fuelled spectre, and shuffling the lifeboats onboard isn't going to help.
You know, like:
- Not logging people out every 14 seconds.
- Larger, or unlimited, character limits.
- When the only viable option is eve-search, that is bad (Chribba shouldn't have needed to correct a basic flaw, but he did it well.)
- Auto-checking to see if a player should be able to post in a certain area (Try posting in CAOD, and you're in one of the NPC corps (a finite small list?) Forum denies you the power to post on that char.)
The first three are done by basically every forum in the world other than this one, and the last one would take maybe an hour to do.

Oh I'd like to add...
Since the Tech forum has the more intelligent discussions (no offense intended) done by people which are generally less bothered with forums (I rarely use forums myself), there are not going to be as many people here defending the section, but we still want to keep it. It would be hugely unfair if an important minority group (3rd party developers) loses its area just because it wasn't vocal enough about it.
These changes were based on what, post count? _

search function, posting n CAOD reveal all you account chars (make the alts to actual pay a new account = good for bussiness), Faction warfare corner shold be a nice addition and for god sake keep the tech lab.

Guys, you really should think about this and the actual (also financial) outcome of the removal for you. Third party devs make stuff which EVE lacks and players find important/useful, thus drawing people in and keeping them enjoy the game. Think about it. EVEMon, killboards, what do you have running on YOUR desktop and in YOUR web browser?
Keep the Tech Lab alive, please.

I feel this is a very poor choice of focus. Oh, I'm happy you're doing SOMETHING (anything) with the forums, but really, do you think shuffling topics around is really spongeworthy?
No, what we'd all really like to hear about is that you're making the forums more functional, adding tools & features that other sites have. A search feature with multiple filters that works pops to mind. All love to Chribba for Eve-Search, which helps bridge the huge gaping chasm in finding information, but having to go to another site to search for information is just stupid. Now that would have been impressive.
Not an Epic Fail, but definately not your finest work. Please try again.
