Recently, some of our players have experienced performance issues in EVE. As this impaired the player experience and enjoyment of those affected, we consider these issues to be critical. To make sure the weekend is as enjoyable as possible for all players, we went into overdrive and are deploying a patch this Saturday, 22 November. The patch will require an extended downtime starting at 11:00 GMT and we expect to be back up at 13:00 GMT. During this downtime a portion of EVE Online: Quantum Rise 1.0.1 will be deployed and patch notes are available for your perusal.
This patch contains the performance fixes from the originally planned 1.0.1 patch. We will continue to work on other issues that have been found and will deploy those in an upcoming patch which will be released within the next two weeks. |

I would also like to thank the upgrade crew for coming in on a Saturday to make the game that much smoother.

I really hope the memory leak is handled correctly. I have filed a bug report with a screen shot of my Task Manager. It showed that exefile.exe was using nearly 1.5 GB of RAM (Classic Windowed). This was only with a Classic client after 1 hour of play. I have yet to use Premium because of these gross oversights with memory management in the client.
Slightly off topic: Will CCP ever offer a native 64-bit client for those that run 64-bit OS systems? This would require them to be more aggressive with their memory management. I would hate to watch a 64-bit version using 4GB or more because of a "kitchen sink" memory leak.

Same question was asked when they announced the change to 64bit server software. Dev response was that the client has a lot of third party 32bit tech holding the client back.

If you are referring to corporation standings not updating correctly then I can confirm that has already been resolved. It was hotfixed a few days ago and all corp standings should now be updating correctly.
Note however that the calculations for corp standings were changed in Quantum Rise. |

Okay, kudos to CCP for acting quickly on an issue that is obviously affecting the gameplay experience for a number of people.
I am very tired of the disregard for Asia/Pacific players in the timing, however. Regular downtime is right in the middle of prime playing time for east-coast Australia: 9pm ordinarily, or 10pm in daylight savings times.
This patch deployment will be from 10 pm to 12 pm Saturday night - one of the very few times I have to play for an extended period.
CCP, it would be greatly appreciated if consideration could be given to an alternate time for the regular downtime. I appreciate that the relative number of players from each geographical location needs to be weighed up, but Australia is always the short end of this particular stick. Surely there's a time that would be in non-peak for Europe, America and Australia simultaneously? |

You gotta love when a company chooses the one time you get to play to shut down the entire system, all to fix bugs that would have been found before ship had they invested in competent and qualified test engineers instead of depending on a mix of so-called 'agile development' and 'it compiles with only a few warnings, ship it to sisi for alpha testing!'.
No.. not really. I see things like this as failure on CCP's part. If CCP's quality control practices used actual industry standard best practices, they would have known about the memory leaks as soon as the BVT's that checked for them failed when the dev checked in his code and triggered a new run of the build. The test engineers would have seen it in there daily test cases for play testing, and the SDETS who work in test but code tools to break the product wuld have been able the give you a per-interface count of the memory malloc()'ed verses the memory free()'ed, with the full list of pointers leaked so you can know the order on top of it, since you should know what endian your hardware is and be able to know that too.
I am of course, speaking as a developer myself. Consider this some constructive, professional feedback on the quality of your product, and keep in mind I pay for my account like anybody else before you get mad at me for saying this. |

This has been happening since before trinity.
It's especially bad during FW plexing. ..so many npcs and reds while orbiting makes the whole overview jump around wildly when the selection action icons change size or clone upto 3 times.. I've had upto 4 rows of icons at times which caused my overview to move left 3 inches and bugged out my drone window.

Because the 10 or so ships you encounter in a test environment have the exact same end result as the hundreds you encounter in either a fleet battle or 45 to 60 minutes of playing...
Some bugs are only obvious when 40k people are hammering the software.
Edit: they may even have done all you said, spotted the bug and figured it could be fixed later. Not realizing it would be a more serious bug in the live environment.

Thanks for the updates CCP!
As for you guys going on about QA, please have an understanding that QA is not the same as a full deployment (which then reveals bugs not found in QA). Its totally unfair to have a go at the QA people who are no doubt working their socks off every day. I know what I'm talking about as I was a QA tester at a Microsoft Game Studio for a short time.

They could be. They have enough statitistical data from data-gathering on production (or they should, since every other game does) that creating a few thousand Mock objects's using test automation that both agreed with the data and also (and some could say more importantly) disagreed with it (for bounds testing, etc) while keeping to the interface contracts should not be a 'hard' task. Unless of course they dont care about quality and don't invest in basic, unit test friendly code.
Originally by: Washell Olivaw

Thats why you have a seperate stress enviorment set up with loads of automation running week soak's on the last production build as hard as you can, and validate the ship by soaking it before shipping the code to Production.
Originally by: Washell Olivaw

Valid, but only if you dont take into account that memory leaks are always considered a top priority by anybody who knows what they are doing, and IMHO any competent developer will express physical pain when such an issue is found in his code until it is fixed if he really cares about his code. Additionaly, if a Test Engineer knew about it but didnt say anything or file a bug to be triaged at the daily scrum becouse "it was not a big issue" then I would personaly fire that test enginneer for not doing his job.
Then again, based on what I have heard said in the dev chats and so forth, they use an agile, sprint based methology like 'scrum' and dont invest in test engineers or dedicated developers who work only with the test team.. like I noted above. If I'm wrong, I would love to hear CCP say so... but then that would mean the QA guys dropped the ball and possible have no clue what they are doing.
Its not personal, I'm sure they are all great people, but I'm just calling it as I see it and I see epic failure.
Oh, and BTW I got Microsoft creds too.. so lets not get into an e-peen war.

People will quit complaining when they roll into a fleet battle with 1000 people and experience it with very little lag. Imagine no lag 500 vs 500. I quit Eve ages ago and im back to see the lag free version. If they don't get it all this time at least that is where there current focus is. Without lag this game will get back a huge portion of the players who quit.

As to the little back and forth on development ...
Most gaming companies aren't going to invest the time and resources into bullet proofing a game that go into a mission critical application.
Yes. I was surprised they had memory leaks too as there are a number of 3rd party products that will check for that ... Maybe they'll think about making a little investment there after this ...
But on the subject of stress testing an application that requires a great deal of user input ... you really need a full blown simulator for that and ... having worked on such a simulator ... I can tell you that it had a development process that was a substantial percentage of the size and cost of the application it was testing. Most gaming companies would vastly prefer to use their customer base to stress test their product to incurring such an expense.
Yes we're each investing a whopping $15 US (or so) per month but that's nothing like applications where peoples very lives are at stake. Screw up and get people killed and ... suddenly ... really expensive testing equipment and personnel ... don't seem so expensive any more. (Look at all the trouble Rodney McKay is in as I write these very words!!! LOL!!!)
Now ... as to "best practices" ... I've always hated that term. It's ... pretty much a buzz word. There's an inherent assumption that there is this one set of "best practices" that fit all (which managers oh so eagerly want to believe *sigh*) - when there isn't.
Sorry but ... I've had so much TQM and ... to summarize it all ... "Special High Intensity Training" (the insiders will get the joke) ... that I could vomit. Oh God! The fortunes that were lavished upon that (for those who didn't get the joke) S.H.I.T to no useful purpose ... all by very, very bright people with the best of intentions ...
*sigh*
I will agree however that testing for memory leaks is - a good idea.
LOL!!!!!!

It's actually a very valid whine when it affects one of the few times you can play. I'm gonna go ahead and guess that you're an American and DT has never ever bothered you because it's at a time of day over that most people aren't generally playing.
I, for one, don't support the time of DT being changed, but for us, this extended patch is Saturday night, not Saturday morning. It's no wonder we whine. ----------

Quite, but necessary evil for a single shard server. They have to have the downtime sometime and it's obviously going to be bad for someone when people from all around the world are playing. I would play now if it wasn't for downtime, but I'm not whining because it is pointless and CCP isn't going to change the downtime. It doesn't make sense to change it. That would just switch the whines from one timezone to another (quite possibly creating even more whines).

No..

I notice the issue with d/t has been raised. I petitioned CCP about this a few months ago and asked if it could be changed maybe every 3-4 months by 6 hours. This would rotate the d/t and allow the inconvenience to be shared instead of always hitting the same players. Their response was unsympathetic so I don't envision a change anytime soon. This is an inconvenience to players when anything you're doing needs to be planned with d/t in mind, for those who never experience this problem you can have no idea how this cramps your playing style.

Actually, your original post complaining about the DT gets the Applause for the post most utterly devoid of merit, and your reply isnt much better. Typed like a true child whose dummy has fallen out. Believe it or not, the servers are based in the UK. So, unless you think that CCP should pay for the server engineers to start at 2am Uk time, just so you can get the dt times that YOU feel should suit you, I suggest you keep your whine to yourself. I play mostly during daylight hours so this affects me, the Yanks are asleep so it suits them, you are, unfortunately, 10 hours ahead so it REALLY affects you. Sorry about that, but thats time zones for you. But like I said, why should CCP change something to suit you and a couple of thousand other Aussie players? Dont like it? Either leave (can I haz youz stuff?) or move (we dont want you back anyway, damn colonials ) or stfu and stop whining like a baby.
This IS a critical patch. The memory leak was a desperate issue for many players, really affecting their game more than you having to suffer an extra hours dt. Most players with the leak couldnt play for an hour before the game got to much to bear. I applaud CCP for dealing with this issue so quickly and decisively, so well done them.

Im wondering, an know that its probably been mentioned before but will CCP be adding a server status to the website/forums so that we can see the current status and perhaps the game time. Think it would be useful tool so you dont get all the confusion about the time.... Plus it helps some people from running the client all the time to check and see....

Maybe CCP should work something out with EVEMon devs and provide MOTD, versions and such, so this would be more obvious. Maybe this is already available but not parsed by EVEMon.. I have no idea, but could be good.

Best idea ever. ccp should take over EvEMon. proceed to get a decent developer crew for it, then launch it on their own site, with their own loadouts and battle clinic.
just in my opinion i think that would be rather cool. not really feasible... but cool.

Angel, you are the bringer of Light! (no pun intended, strangely enough )
As you've said, the Devs wouldnt have released the software if they saw an issue with it. They are now wanting (or was that wanted...) 1000+ players on Singularity on one system at one time, EXACTLY to test the software and the Lag issues...
When they deployed the patch on Singularity they MAY have seen a 1 msec lag but how is that going to be noticed? Would it affect the gameplay? Who knows withotu a SHIITE load of players running on singularity at the same time, to test the limits of the software.....
So in effect, the Lag issues are OUR fault for not participating in the game we saw we love - if we cared then why wont we jump into Singularity to test it...
Question Devs: Can we run our characters on TQ and SING at the same time? Alt characters on the same account?
Because if I could do that then I'd run it to help test any upcoming patches.... Just an idea... (Now standing back for the inevitable flames!) Regards,
Jason Brisbane

Oh, and hurray for CCP and the devs working on overdrive and probably using lots of overtime (prolly unpaid also) to fix the most urgents bugs for this patch now!
You guys at CCP could have been lazy and have said 'ah well, it is only some performance issue, no need to hurry, we will fix it next week or the week after'. But you worked hard to fix it as soon as possible.
That deserves my applause, I just hope that there was enough time to test it.
And on a sidenote: maybe annonce tests on Singulary a bit earlier than just a couple of minutes A popup window on TQ might have helped to get attention also.

Well maybe the issue only happens if you have to load up a fair amount of players ships. Maybe it is mostly on classic client and not many had been using that on test. Maybe it happens if you do many missions which people don't do much on test I would imagine. Maybe testers thought the test server was getting to many players and runs on crappier system so the lags were because of that.
There are many situations that is hard to copy on test. Specially hard with memory leak ones that require huge amount of players. |

I've been getting that vertical text bug on my end while typing as well, so you're not alone here. It seems to happen when I've done a lot of alt-tabbing but I may just be imagining things and it could just be happening randomly.

I actually find it pretty entertaining when people get on here and whine about the time and how they waited 4 months for this specific day to get on and play or whatever the whine might be.

14:19, now server isnt starting up as of yet (unless its been started but in a new hidden mode with the unknown protocol thingy). Start up takes around 12 minutes and then the guys need about 15 minutes to finish what they are doing as well. The better annoucement would be 14:19+12+15=14:45 or even 15:00.

Look folks you think it's easy keeping all those hamsters going in the cluster? They need feeding, cleaning, taking care of and the little blighters go on strike without so much as a moment's notice siting "union rules" or just make for freedom as fast their little Nike trainers carry them. They will all be be back in their little wheels soon enough so we can get back to commiting to our second life rather like we should be our first. :)
I for one applaud CCP's willingness to fix the current issues so quickly and Wrangler if ever someone deserves a medal for patience then I hereby award you one.

Exactly, it's nice that the memory leak issue was addressed this soon. Assuming of course that patch works, CCP has earned the medal.

The problem is they won't let the server go live until they get the autopatcher working right. They may even pull the patch and rollback, leaving you maunual patchers up the creek without a compatible version until the re-do the patch.

Please stop this tomfoolery
That is one way to fill customer time. Make them read all the prior posts - may be with a mandatory checkbox. It is beautifully self-limiting as the number of posts grow.
On the other hand, I think most people just prefer ASAP update information about additional delays -- as soon as it is suspected you are going to miss your current posted goal. I at least would prefer to see you come up a little bit earlier than your last posted estimate of completion.
The quibble about 8 minutes left in prior CCP post was pretty bad as any reasonable person could tell that the server wasn't going to be up in 8 minutes. I mean even without a new patch to post, EVE normally takes 500 seconds for the last phase.

Why are pre-prod patches being released on public servers? Why not only make prod-patches available after they've passed Q&A? Who's the rudest of them all! |

Originally by: Pit Panic Did anyone in CCP has tested the patch before making it available for public... ? (a corupt 4MB patch zzzzz....)
Unfortunately it looks like CCP subscribes to the 1950s business model of declaring deadlines and then proceeding as if they will succeed no matter what goes wrong or is not done. At least until 5 minutes after missing a deadline. Though it might be partially for practical reasons like union agreement to stay late 1 day in a week but only 1 day versus getting customers with bad clients back on track ASAP.
But I am betting someone in CCP management apparently thinks that sort of PR looks better even in the face of significant work slippages. I don't know why those sort of managers don't like just extending downtime or just admitting that maybe they should postpone deployment for a couple days. But they don't.
And I have worked for such people myself. I am sure everyone is at maximum sweat and tempers are short.
