Edited by: Stick Cult on 19/01/2009 00:50:29 I'm going to try 0.0.5 now, but on 0.0.4, it says I'm training the wrong skill. At the time I started it I was training a skill, then mid training I switched, but ceres still says I'm training the old one. Seems like it's just a simple thing of not refreshing itself, but I don't know obj-c...
edit: In fact, 0.0.5 crashes when I try and launch it. I think it started the the load it does when it first starts, but then it crashes and the dialog comes up saying it quit unexpectedly.. |

Are you sure you waited 15 minutes? (The API is only updated once every 15 minutes.) But I'll check it out and make sure I haven't broken it this evening.

No idea why, but it sounds like the load failed to finish correctly.
Can you try to remove all files in ~/Library/Application Support/Ceres/ ?
I am going to look into the fragility of the loader. |

Thanks to you for trying it.
Sorry, Stick Cult, I couldn't replicate the problem with skill training. Could you be more precise when it happened, did you by any chance start the program, go into sleep mode and then change skill?
(Going into sleep mode kills the updating code for some reason.)

Edited by: Stick Cult on 19/01/2009 15:11:29 I opened it and added in my api info, and it said I was training the right skill. I went into eve for a few hours, changed my skill during that time... It said I was still training my old skill, and still said it a few hours later.. It probably did go into sleep mode before I went into eve, but it still did that every time I ran the program, even a day later.
edit: And deleting files from ~/Library/Application Support/Ceres worked, 0.0.5 works now. |

excellent start. Literally just installed it, and the first issues that come to mind are:
1. It adds all the characters on an account, that's just annoying. 2. Stick a link to the api key page on that Add API Key page, it's a pain to look it up (I actually ended up opening evemon just to find it lol).
Does it alert you when a skill finishes? If it's possible to add skill finishing times to iCal (which in turn will sync with the iPhone ofc) then that's a route you might want to consider, it would allow you a lot of flexibility with how the alerts are treated (email, visual, audio, etc etc).
Very much looking forward to future versions, keep up the great work! |

1. Yes, that is a bit annoying yes. But you can remove the extra characters at least. (Will fix) 2. That is a great idea, I'll definatly look into it. Since that sounds awesome. |

Looks like a great start from the screenshots. I installed .5 and it hangs at 'loading data (0/5 files downloaded)' so I attempted to switch back to .4 and have the same results. No errors in either case and still seems responsive - however I left it sit for a significant amount of time, an hour or two, and it never budged. I also deleted the sqlite3 file to no avail. Perhaps I'll delve your code a bit and see where it's trying to look. |

That is odd, I'll try to look into what it can be too. But it should have timed out long before that. (30 secs iirc.)

That might not have crashed it, I tried it and it didn't fail gracefully. I'll try and look into that too. |

Hmmm... Got the source (latest one) and tried to compile it. DoesnŠt work and IŠm either to drunk or to inexperienced with Xcode/ObjC to figure it out. hereŠs what GDB spits out, in case it would help. For paranoic reasons IŠve changed the usernames displayed.
Attaching to program: `/Users/MYNAME/Downloads/Safari/Ceres/build/Debug/Test', process 10597. warning: Could not find object file "/Users/AURORAMORGANSNAME/Code/Obj-C/Ceres/build/Ceres.build/Debug/Test.build/Objects-normal/i386/TestMain.o" - no debug information available for "/Users/AURORAMORGANSNAME/Code/Obj-C/Ceres/TestMain.m".

Edited by: Aurora Morgan on 25/01/2009 12:11:43 Only thing I can think of is that you're running Tiger (I haven't found a way to make it fail gracefully yet.)
If that is not the case, could you send the entries from the console log? They might include something useful.
And if you have XCode installed (as implied), then you could try to compile the latest version yourself, that might give some more information.
Mental note to self: Ship with debug symbols so these errors include some more information. |

Oh bonkers. Seems like the whiskey haze of late yesterday night made me try to compile Test instead of Ceres. Now, once I figured that one out, it all seems to work splendidly. Sorry for the inconvenience. Now I'll try to fiddle some with the code. Need to learn this Xcode thing anyway. Cheers! |

This is really awesome, thanks for tackling this project! I really like the iCal integration suggestion, though it's probably a bit too early to inundate you with feature requests. :) I have absolutely zero coding knowledge, but if there's anything I can do to help out, just give me a shout. |

Almost everyone can do what is probably *the* most important part, testing. Or maybe the other important (but for me a lot harder) thing, having good/bad/awesome/sucky ideas. Anything goes, it just might take a while for it to get implemented, but I promise to read and reflect on any idea.
If anyone manages to crash it in any way, then it would be awesome if you could send me the relevant files in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter (Anything with Ceres in it's name) and if you know a way to reproduce it, that would help a lot too. |

0.0.6, 6 might not be a prime... but it's the number of the new version!
Growl support! Calculates skillpoints, quite accurately too. (More accurate than EVE at least, which is good enough for now.) Requires leopard (Now gives a cryptic message instead of just a core dump, I think...) Sends events for various reasons, doesn't really affect anything visible, but I wanted to add it to the list.
And I lost the list of other things, but it is probably a bit better in several ways...

Looking good! Mine stayed on an old skill when I changed the skill part way through, as well. Deleting the files in the Ceres library also forced me to reinstall my API info ( a bit of a PITA ). Keep up the good work though. |

Wonderful,
I'll check into why the skill change mechanics works for me but not for some others. (It takes around 15 minutes to change, due to CCP:s cache timer)
About the database, yes. If you remove it, then all the API info is gone (via design, since it keeps all data focused, and allows a quick reset if something goes wrong.)
But you shouldn't have to touch it unless there is a bug that corrupts the data really, but we'll have to wait a bit before I say Ceres is free from those.
Edit: If someone can't generate a database for any reason, but want to test anyhow. Download a pre-generated database from http://Ceres.doesntexist.org/db and drop it in ~/Library/Application Support/Ceres |

Edited by: Rhohm on 29/01/2009 15:56:34 Nice one :D Useful to me already.
One feature I would suggest though - When you double click on a character on the list it brings up the 'more info' window.
By the way, if you wanted a quick bit of website design for ceres.doesntexist.org just let me know :) I would be happy to help :)

A very good idea, and it is on my todo list (http://ceres.doesntexist.org/other/todo.txt , might not get updated very often, but I will try to keep it reasonably up to date.)

0.0.7!
It has several new features, including:
Fixed (a few) bugs. Learning skills now counts for attributes. Sparkle auto-updater. (I hope it works too...) Double click on a character now opens the info window. The API window opens on load (if there are no characters).

I downloaded 0.0.7, and tried opening the app, but it took like ten minutes at the progress bar without showing progress (the quickly scrolling blue spiral thingy ) before I gave up and quit the app. Is there something else I need to do with the files before I can open it? |

No, you shouldn't. But it sounds like Ceres for some reason can't connect to download the datafiles.
One other person had the same problem, but I don't really know how to fix it yet. I will try to think about it, since it sounds like a bug...
You don't happen to use a firewall like little snitch or anything similar by any chance?

Ok, that's where I guessed.
It probably won't work (Since you still need to connect to the CCP servers, and that uses the same code), but you can download a database from http://Ceres.doesntexist.org/db and put it in ~/Library/Application Support/Ceres
About wget, that won't be any difference (and wget isn't included in OS X, but the same argument works for curl). Both use http, the difference is that NSURLConnection (the method I use) respects OS X settings for proxies and also allows for more control, and has an Objective C API. |

Edit: Spelling
I have to admit I come from a Linux background so I don't know a lot about objective C or OS X specific stuff, but for me Apple dropping wget from 10.5 was a silly silly decision, the syntax of curl is just blarrgh, I use wget in so many old scripts and stuff that I added it to OS X, a lot of other people I know did the same (or made an alias to curl -O).
I wrote a very basic skill tracker program using GTK perl a while ago so I know the pain your going through, at least now I think CCP's api is somewhat documented.
When I get some more time, (hopefully tonight) I'll take a look at the source see if I can sort out why the connection is screwing up.
