I think a c0 ckpit view would be cool. Sure it's not needed...but what's the problem with having things added to the game, just for the sake of being a neato feature?
Another thing...as far as I'm concerned, and since we're all gaming and pretending anyway...MY ship does have a bridge from which I pilot my ship...heck...it even has windows, and a big leather captains chair! And while I'm piloting around this great galaxy, my character regularily looks out those windows on the bridge. On the few occasions where my ship has met its demise, my character had to quickly make his way to his "escape pod" before ejecting from the burning hulk.
Thats the way I imagine the game.
The rest of you can choose to be stuck in some gelatin pod. But even that doesnt make sence if you think about it. Think about all the docking and undocking you do. So each time you dock, you have to suck yourself out of your jelly filled pod, and hit the showers before exiting your ship just to conduct a few moments business. Then jump back in the jelly? Jump to the next station and repeat process? Shyaa right!
In fact...what's the point of ALL the ships having windows and such??? And as a great example...if you look close at the Minmatar shuttle, you will actually see 2 seats behind that windshield or window.
What's the point of the windows if your not going to pretend your character is standing around on the bridge gazing out into space as you chart your next course, or sitting in his captains chair giving orders during all these cool moments we all share?

It doesnt have to make sense. It is the prime fiction.
The pod interface is how a single player controlls a whole battleship.
Presumably pods arnt needed to fly something as simple as a shuttle.
Also, battleships do actually still have crew.
But you - the pilot - youre in a pod.

Sorry...you may be, but I am not. Not untill I jump into it.
Why? Because I have a better ship that does not require me to be encased in a jello mold the whole time I fly it. That's MY prime fiction.

I have a horrible suspicion the response was to the thread title. Which does seem to be asking for an inside-cockpit view. Which is not what we want is it? :/

I think it is not a bad idea, however for the people that completly bashed meowcat for even suggesting it was the most annoying portion of this thread.

We can all agree that the fiction of EVE is that the ship is normally piloted from inside the pod using a fairly simple interface. But I've always taken for granted that there was a crew somewhere behind that interface taking care of the little details. (like which way to steer when I want to orbit at 15km) It stands to reason that there would be a bridge somewhere on the ship where the pod encased commander could project a hologram to communicate with them if he choose.
It could be implemented fairly easily by having the camera view pull all the way in to the orbit origin. Moving the camera would then cause rotation rather than orbiting. Using the RMB would work as currently. (rotation while held, snapping back when released) The bridge model would be a simple cylinder or hemisphere with a texture. (possibly animated) Transparencys could provide windows or viewscreens. It would be ideal if you could also use your own textures for this allowing you to customize your ship. No one else would ever see your bridge so there'd be no reason to keep it on the server With careful modeling and texturing the performance hit shouldn't be any worse than having a couple of frigates on you screen and of course you should be able to turn it off to boost performance. The only concern would be making the normal model of your ship transparent to you but not anyone else.
While this feature wouldn't add any functional advantage, it would be a nice little bit of content to help people immerse themselves in the fiction of flying a huge spacecraft rather than the little spec you often watch.
If the devs are too busy with shiva to do this (I hope) how about making it a contest for subscribers. Specify texture sizes, poly count, and model format and give ISK or subscription time as prizes. They could probably do that with a lot of ship and station models rather than making them all themselves. All they need to do is pick the best ones , edit a few stats, and plug them into the game. :)

Why there's no*****pit that is, not why the word filter's so crap ;)
there would still be a crew bridge or some other view... and yes there are hundreds of crew on the big ships as it says in other stories...
anyway it would be great if they had a different bridge for everyship.

if you dont want to use it dont... it would be a button to change both...
so yes, if youa re against an option to do something you are a 'tard.
it would be fine...after all even if you are in a goo-ball you are using a camera on a drone to see... that unrealistic to say there would be other cameras?

i'd rather they spent time on improving the current interface then to make another, not guaranteed to be less buggy, one. and yes, i know, shiva is bringing UI improvements. But this feature is so severely unneeded, and also would probably extreemly time consuming, that i would say - no. ever.

Edited by: Rachel Darkstar on 27/07/2004 00:23:32 Excelent idea you can never have enough views. different views in different windows would be cool too.
On the point of joystick controlled Iwar-II/X/elite type of flightsystem in EVE. I don't think it can be pulled of in a massive online game. It would be a totally different version of EVE. A different game for a different kind of player even. It's a game I'd love to see though.
Oh and there's a bunch of people on this forum who react to any idea for change with the."oh there's another one,go play a different game, NOT GONNA HAPPEN, how dare you to suggest it you stupid noob" response. The finger too al of them.

Hey, how about stopping the cameras from zooming too close and INTO the ship before giving us a "cockpit" view? Eh?
It works in a station when you're docked, but then why is it screwed up when your outside?
