Wwise uses the word 'solution' twice in the first section of its front page and of course what they say actually says nothing at all, just terms out of the marketing department textbooks.
I have all the problems listed here regularly.
Still it may not be them but the way the sound engine has been implemented, its just very strange it can't be fixed. The popping was around when I played a few years back, maybe they have brought back old broken code. |

The reason for a number of problems with audio in Eve can mostly be linked with the implementation of a new sound engine. It hasn't been without problems but we're almost there now. We're very sorry it has caused you such grief but hope you'll forgive us.
Most of the issues that have been discussed here have either been dealt with (in release 1.1) or are being fixed now and will be released next month.
An issue that has been raised here is Sounds (turrets in particular) getting muffled as you zoom away - this is intentional. However, before rel 1.1 it did happen much too fast - this has been addressed now. The idea of placing the listener at ship position is a good one - we will look into if we can have an option of allowing the player to choose between hearing sounds from camera or ship position.
Thanks for taking the time to write about the sound in Eve - we will do as much as possible to address these issues and future ones.
We will shortly do a special Sound blog which should help us all a lot.
This was 2 months ago, here we have a new patch...... and still nothing? Whats the odds that we can get a response on this?

Rocius with the new patch coming out Monday I would wait and see if there are any stealth fixes. I see nothing about it directly on the patch notes but it is possible that something strange and unrelated is affecting the sound and may now be fix. Cross your fingers and wait till then is my advice at the moment. If it is still broken then a petition or bug report would be a step in the right direction.
Sorry I can't give you any more help than.

I'm still getting a lot of popping and crackles, with fairly routine loss of one channel or the other, which magically resets itself if I zoom around a bit.
Seems to happen a lot when I open the system map while in space.

ahem, is this ccp's official view on the matter ? dont bother with trying to fix the issues and rather wait if some unrelated changes may silently resolve them ?
wow ^^

Originally by: Durzel The sound problems are seriously making scanning actually painful. I'll drop a probe, open the Map and shortly afterwards hear a nasty pop in one speaker followed by muted/no sound from one side.
I close the map and spin my ship and I get another nasty pop (or several) that restores the sound.
This occurs every time I scan, and sometimes just when several sounds are happening at the same time.
As an extension to this problem if I am listening to any other music/video on my PC (like a Youtube video for example) the sound problem extends to the application outside of the EVE client ...
Bizarre, but true

Edited by: Maria Kalista on 30/06/2009 08:03:29 I mined a bit today (serious hangover so no working brain cells left to do anything but) and I must say, it sounds to me that CCP did a serious fix to their sound engine. I now finally can again control the sound level by zooming in and out (running two accounts on one Mac). No longer an abrupt break off of sound, but gracefully panning in or out. No pops either but that could have been overruled by the hammering in my head....
Hope I'm not the only one who can hear the improvements.
Edit: and just one post needed to post. (yippie)

My Nightmare turrets randomly make sounds when firing, when scanning if I'm anywhere close to anything that makes a sound then I can guarantee that I'll get pops & complete channel dropouts until I spin the ship out of map view or disable/re-enable audio.
How can bugs as easily reproduceable as this make it to a live server?

The sound has been broken since the apoc expansion. Crackles in stead of explosions, no module effects, except for the sensor booster which is incredibly loud, no missile launcher sounds, except occasionally the very 1st salvo etc etc.
And no word if any of this will ever be fixed :(. It really breaks the immersion in the game.

And..... Nothing has been done about it? This is just like the anti-aliasing issue, that requires either a workaround with a third party application to even get it working for some cards, or yet another workaround to get it working with HDR. Something other games have been managing for ages. Without workarounds, without changing compatability values in 3rd party apps. And still, there is no ingame AA setting?
Seriously.. How friggin hard is it. Just bring up the sound code, hop to the sound cutoff section, and friggin disable it already! I'm so sick of tiny tiiiiny issues remaining for months and months in certain games. Its just bull****. It would be okay if it was something massive like, hey plz make a new ship k thx.
But this is a simple sound effect that we want TURNED OFF. Just disable the muffling! Give us a checkbox! Even i know how to code a checkbox in an options menu! And i'm a noob, and still i could do it in less than a day. I'm just tired of it, thats all. Yes its "just" sound. But geez. Its just the ultimate disrespectful action, to take no action at all. Just have the friggin sound guy code a disable-checkbox on overtime, or on his own free time lol. I dont care.
If you dont want me as a customer, fine, you wont get it. I dont play games without sound, no im not a "h4rdc0re" gamer that only cares about stats and spreadsheets. I care about the experience, the immersion. If you cant fix such a tiny friggin issue after several months, what am i supporting with my cash? I would never pay for a game without graphics. So why should i pay for a game without sound? They are of equal value to me.

Quote: Since Apocrypha, in-game sound has been more FUBAR than it's ever been. From speakers turning off and on, to loud popping and crackling noises to complete silence outside of a very close zoom. while my sound issue pales in comparison, it is annoying to have to hit escape 4 times to get my sound to set to the levels the bars are set to in the audio tab.
they seem to change themselves every time i log in, not to maximum levels, but to some random levels that aren't actually what the settings are set to.
the most annoying one is the chicks voice. seriously, after this many years playing that thing makes me want to kill people when i hear it. and having to go in and turn it off again each time i log in well.. peoples lives are at risk CCP.

Well, as is definitly clear....Sound is still massivly borked. And neither the Monday nor the Tuesday patches seemed to have accidently fixed sound issues. Any further word from the folks that might be looking into this problem for us?

As far as I know the music is the one thing about the sound that's working just fine. (Well, at least it is now that they fixed a little issue with the jukebox a couple patches ago...)
That dang popping / speaker shutting off in the starmap and randomly at accel gates is the main thing that's been bugging me lately. Kinda gotten used to the lack of sound in general though Probably cause I haven't been playing much at all in the last couple months... hehe
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started. |
