How does CCP hire? Does anyone know? I mean, hypothetically if I were one of those people who got a degree in networking or programming, how would I land a job with CCP?

ummm....off hand....
I'd say the same way you apply for any other job. Build a resume, lie about your experience and work history, create a generic cover letter stating that since the day you were born you wanted to work for a company that operates an MMO. Sigh...what else....ummmmmm....wait six months to find out that there were 200 other applicants vying for the same two open spots with much better fake resumes....and all 200 of those people actually lived in the country of Iceland. Give up in despair. Procure a position teaching 7th grade social studies in a Mississippi public school. Become depressed, fat, go bald....then finally die.
Thus completes the "circle of life".
Much luck to ya sport!!!!

I'm looking for information about what someone with a family can do about working in Iceland.
My wifes a Nurse and I've got a primary school aged daughter, would there be opportunities for them over there ?
If you can't respond here, is there someone I can email, send me an eve-mail if you don't want to post the information here.

You might want to look at Iceland and see what the country is like. It's small. Opportunites are pobably limited. It may be a great place for kids to grow up, but it may not be a good place to move to with the expectation of finding a job.

You're pretty close, but in the case of CCP there are additional requirements. You must know at least 3 people in the company that can (and want to) recommend you, and you won't ever find out "that there are 200 other applicants vying for the same two open spots" because CCP doesn't respond to every application sent in, only to those they think are viable for a position at CCP. Hell, I know for a fact they don't even look at all the applications sent in. |

There are no requirements to "know people in the company". If a person has a skillset we can use, he/she gets hired regardless if he/she knows ten people or none at all.

Yeah my manager throws alot of C.V's away mainly because most people handing them in have poors grades. He believes that if you didn't try at school to better yourself then why should he give you the oppertunity now.
Now with a record of unemployed for under 25 years olds for thoses that studied in school can now reap the benefits.
When will the credit crunch be over ....games are starting to go up already from ú39.99 to ú44.99 for most new games .

Your manager is an Idiot.
Back in university, I saw plenty of students getting high grades that couldn't code their way out of a paper bag. Not saying that people with good grades are bad programmers... Rather, the correlation isn't as strong as some assume.
What do you get if you have a student that does all their schoolwork to the perfection, and spends the rest of the time relaxing and doing stuff that are important in life? A student with good grades.
And what do you get when you have a student that does the spends enough time on schoolwork to pass, so s/he can spend the rest of the time writing code? A student that knows how to program.

He's not an idiot, he's right.
If you interview everyone who sends a CV why bother with them? You would never get anything done. I check for spelling mistakes and sloppy English If I see any it tells me the applicant either does not care or does not have attention to detail, so its bin time for them.
I run my own business and I can't afford to be a charity and give people a chance who have shown they are happy to throw those chances away in the past.

of which both of those people tried hard at school and got the grades. You never pointed out the fact that people that didn't get the grades at school, what about them? Would you accept them to your company to code ?

You know how you do? You require them to include code they've written outside of schoolwork. What they've produced of code beyond what was required shows not only their real skills, but also how passionate they are about programming.
BTW, you do know that writing good code is something you learn by doing?

Wrong. It is pretty much the most vital part of the application if it is to have a better chance than a snowball's life expectancy in hell, to get looked at and/or considered, as CCP's hiring policies are too much based on biased clique connections rather than professional, unbiased standards. I'm not saying the former happens more than than the latter at CCP, but the simple fact remains that the former is prevalent at CCP. Which it shouldn't.
Let's not forget that being too lazy and/or incompetent to send a standardized reply along the lines of "We've received your application, but are not interested, thank you for your interest and good day" is a gross insult, considering that many of your applications come from overseas, from people that are willing to leave their homeland and either leave their families behind or take them with them to whichever CCP office they'll be working at. These are people that are willing to change their lives drastically to be a part of CCP...and you treat them like slime. And what about the few souls that (somewhat foolishly) take up a field of study with the specific intent to work at a company like CCP? They sure would look like fools if they spent 3+ years of their lives in a narrow and highly specialized academic field of study, only to find that their carefully worded and heavily revised CV is met by a wall of silence, wouldn't they? Unless, of course, they've spent their time wisely by building up connections to CCP staff to strengthen the chance of their voice being heard and listened to. Which, as everybody agrees on, should not be a required step. |

Building a resume is so old school. It's all automated key word searches now. You scan related jobs for common words and use those in your application. Then use a thesaurus to look up related words and add those. Then add the usual mix of HR-speak pseudo-words. There's no need to waste time on content. If you get a response back immediately you're also safe to use a dictionary search and keep re-sending with random words until it gets in. If you get no response at all it's probably a human who likes to torture applicants by not responding. In which case you're also safe to keep re-sending with random words. Since they care so little about doing their job they'll probably be happy to let you in if it makes the job aps stop. |

There was a similar question posted over at Iceland Review a while ago (keep in mind the article and numbers are outdated, especially the wage conversion). With the financial crisis and all many jobs are scarce. The educational system here is rather good and there is also an international school in the greater Reykjavik area. Maybe this helps you on your quest for information.

As a recent computer science graduate, I've been going through the same questions. I've had some interviewing experience and have been given some helpful advice on applying to companies by my university's careers department. Hope some of this helps:
Most IT companies use the same traditional hiring process. They list jobs on their websites or hiring agencies, then you apply through that with a brief resume or CV if you're interested. How each company goes about discarding inappropriate applications and shortlisting people for interview varies. In general, companies shortlist people for in-person interviews if your background, skills, interests, grades and awards etc are all relevant to the position you're applying for. Don't hold your breath after applying as some companies take AGES to get back to you and most won't even tell you that you've been rejected.
If you do get shortlisted, the type of interviews and tests you'll be put through depend on what the company you're applying to use. Some companies just give you one short interview but game design and programming are very competitive fields so expect some intensive interviewing and probably some testing. One of the main things an interview is used for is to make sure you're not trying to "big up" yourself and pad your CV/resume. Lying on a CV can be easily detected at interview if the company you're applying for has any sense (which I imagine CCP does). Another big reason for interviews is that the cost of hiring the wrong employee or hiring someone into an inappropriate position within a company is estimated at approximately three times their salary. Hiring someone is a significant investment that the company needs to be absolutely sure on to limit financial risk.
After you finish an interview with a company, my top tip would be not to hold your breath waiting for a response. I know what it's like when you have to put various parts of your life on hold while waiting for a company to get back to you. I actually missed out getting a year of professional experience with my degree because I waited for Microsoft to respond before applying to others. They didn't reply at all and I left my applications for other companies too late. It can be months before a company gets back to you and many won't let you know that you've been turned down. They will sometimes just keep your CV on file in case they need to go into a hiring frenzy later and create a new position you'd be good for. But given the current economic climate, I don't see that happening as a lot of companies are currently going into hiring freezes.
Applying for jobs and being rejected can be absolutely soul destroying but hiring an employee is a big cost risk to companies so rejection shouldn't be taken personally. Just keep applying to companies you want to work for and see what happens.

I don't understand why you feel you have to move? this is 2009, we have so many 'instant' forms of communication that i don't understand why you'd need to move country to do a programming job. With todays mobile phones you could probable write the code on the mobile and then just send it via the web or log into a FTP site and upload the code into there.
My job however is in a data center, where i do maintenance on the servers, MFs and switches, along with a bunch of other stuff. Yes if anybody from CCP is reading this I'd love a job with you, looking after your data center

sucks to be in australia becuase if you are accepted after you apply for a job at ccp its pretty much a 12 hour flight to anywhere their offices are based at lol hurray for massive jet lag
Feed the hampsters, oh how little you understand it. * The hampsters are on a strickly enforced carb rich diet, to keep their energy up * you've got to talk to them and encourage them when they look to be getting a little tired * have the nightshift hampster crew ready to take over * change the hampster litter trays * have to keep the coffee brewed hot so they can get coffee in their little hampster cups
we're planning on assigned hampster wheels because there are a few that want to fight over getting the good ones and sometimes they take awhile to sort themselves out.
all in all its a full time job.
As for the Australian thing yeah that might put a bit of a dampener on it, but i would love if they open a DC here, from what i understand its pretty cheap here to have a DC and I could run it for them, and all i ask is what I'm paid now, free eve and to be allowed to play while I'm at work

I've worked on group projects through face-to-face collaboration and through online collaboration, so I have some experience with both. I have to say that there is absolutely no substitute for daily face-to-face group meetings and scheduled work sessions. Scheduling a physical meeting with other people has the important psychological implication of raising your internal priority of the event. I guess on some subconscious level people feel they're letting someone real down if they don't turn up to a scheduled face-to-face meeting. Whatever the reason, it's been empirically shown that pre-arranging to do something with another person reduces procrastination by an incredible amount (details in the book "Predictably Irrational" by Dan Ariely).
I used this all the time in university for group projects and to make sure I did well in exams by scheduling revision times with someone else rather than just revising by myself. Since I started doing that some years ago, I jumped from around a 55% average mark to over 70 and I recently graduated with a first class honours (in a Masters degree in Computer Science). So it works, and it's an incredible tool for increasing productivity and making a workforce effective. Collaboration online just hasn't had the same effect for me, it has to be face-to-face.

We have some remote workers in our office, and they're required to use a webcam to join in the daily scrum meeting.
That said, as good as teleworking is, doing a remote buddy check-in is *not* fun.
Besides, I get the impression that CCP is far more touch feely; if you couldn't phyically breathe the same air then you'd be missing out on a lot of things. Not to mention the chance to try and drink Oveur under the table. (I hear you can actually get a certificate for doing that :P) When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained. |

I'd say the same way you apply for any other job. Build a resume, lie about your experience and work history, create a generic cover letter stating that since the day you were born you wanted to work for a company that operates an MMO...wait six months to find out that there were 200 other applicants vying for the same two open spots with much better fake resumes....and all 200 of those people actually lived in the country of Iceland. Give up in despair.
Are CCP interested the rather unused-in-gaming-currently field of Neural Networking and Genetic Algorithms(in a larger sense, Machine learning?) I'm just wondering if that "skillset" which is as of yet not advanced enough to be used in a game like EVE without on-site research, would be one of the skillsets CCP might be interested in.

Same thing really, just keep it to 2 pages and it's all fine. There was a lady in my university's careers department who can do wonders with a CV, squeezing it all into 2 pages :D. BTW HenkieBoy, almost everyone in Iceland speaks very good english.

Not sure what you mean by "work experience" but there are interns around every now and then. We also are not very keen on remote workers, so moving to one of the offices is in 99% of the cases a must. If someone wants more numbers on Iceland the national statistics site is quite elaborate. But keep in mind that with the financial crisis a lots of numbers will change the trends and averages once they are in the system.

The normal steps when you relocate between countries is that as soon as you got the job offer signed you start looking for somewhere to live. If the place is available before the job starts fine, if not it can be delt with anyways. Now fly back home, get a moving company to pack up all your stuff and place it in temporary storage minus a few suitcases worth that you will bring over yourself. Fly back to new country start the job, live off the suitcases either in a hotel/B&B or if by a miracle the house is already availabe in there. When the permanent accomodation is available have the stuff shipped from the storage at your former home.
It's not that big of a deal to move between countries as I moved from Sweden to England 9 years ago.

I have a problem with authority (especially when I disagree with their choices, and I sure do disagree with a lot of CCP's current priority choices) and serious problems having to work on a regular schedule (as in, waking up at a certain hour each day - my schedule is quite erratic, if you can even call it a schedule)... and as I get older, it's only getting worse. While not so long ago (say, about 3 years ago) my dream-job would have been at CCP, I would hate to have a boss (any boss) nowadays. But I guess if I'd really had to have a boss, CCP wouldn't be such a bad choice (and I do love cold weather, hate hot weather, but love hot water... so Iceland sounds dreamy). Too bad they most likely wouldn't want me anyway.

These days, this kind of thing I find very curious in a software design company. Speaking as someone who worked a number of years remotely from home in software development (modular CRM/CMS system for healthcare industry), having a face-to-face once a week was plenty for us. Even that can easily be remedied with Skype or Oovoo these days... But then not everyone is cut out for self-managment. :)

Hi, I'm Prism X!
Persistence is key in my opinion. You have to first get the interview before you can even start to worry about your own aptitude after all. Sometimes I think HR uses that as method of filtering... if you aren't keen enough to work for your interview, you probably aren't keen enough to work here in the first place.

well i still got a few years to go before i finish up all my learning so that still a few years of posting. *preys to get to number one *

Originally by: Righteous Gun i had a look at the open positions but i didn't see any mention of visa requirements. for the US for example, will CCP sponsor applicants without green card or is it a requirement to have one before applying?
Speaking from the US programming side of the house: Yes. For the right applicant, we will sponsor you and assist with acquiring a visa. However, we work closely with all of our offices. If we believe it would be better to have you in Iceland (or Shanghai), we may route you through those offices.
On a semi-related note, CCP North America is expanding!
We're looking for great programmers. If you have excellent technical coding skills and want to work with CCP in the US, I strongly encourage you to apply.
Below are three specific links to programming positions in our US office:

Edited by: TimMc on 22/07/2009 15:20:00 Question for the devs here: I went to the Atlanta office for a holiday and met one of you (only know real name). After meeting I tried via email to get in touch with someone through him about a placement sandwich year during my university course. Are these ever done and who should I contact? CCP uses alot of top of the line technology, and seems to ask for people with prior industry experience so I am expecting this question to be replied with a "no".
I'm starting my second year this september in BSc Computer Science in the UK btw.

I saw the internship on the ccp corporate pages, I would SO love to apply. If only my uni wasn't as small minded. The only thing they require is that I do my internship together with a group of students, and no luck trying to convince my fellow students that iceland is the place to go right now. Oh well, perhaps I can apply when I go for my masters. In preparation for this let me say the following positive points about myself:
- Will code for ISK and/or game time - Will sleep in cardboard box - Will bake [dutch]oliebollen[/dutch]
Come to think of it, ccp should offer a volunteer coding program. I'd happily sign a NDA with a few body parts as collateral. (ok that might not be legal)

Hmm,
I wonder if they have a need for a hired gun who is relatively incompetent with MPmorg UI interfaces, has slow twitch reaction and can give knowledgeable input on how to make the game more friendly to a larger cadre of games who can't Learn2play.
After all I'm sure they're teaming with people incredibly adept with computers and they very well could be clueless in how to think like members a much larger market of people who want to fight and trade but have slow minds and fingers.
I'm also sure that a game forum would be where human resources people hang out and hope to find a real mediocre person without the wherewithal or initiative to go take the basic steps of a job search. I guess posting here is really confirms my status.
You can contact me by looking up my account information.

Interesting.
What if the position is somewhat office independent and the applicant has a very strong preference for a specific office, but the position is listed in a different office?

Same here. The heat just makes my brain not work properly, I can't stand it. I'd rather be absolutely freezing and wearing an extra jumper than sweaty and overheating. I went on a holiday to Iceland last month expecting it to be nice and cool but the heat wave we had in Ireland followed me there >:|. Apparantly it was a record temperature so I imagine I got a pretty atypical view of what Iceland's like . It's a really beautiful country though, definitely worth visiting now that their currency is tanking and foreign currency is worth more ISK. Since I've come home to Ireland I haven't looked at the landscape here the same way.

From gathering a bit of intel I think it should be diclosed, that the main background needs for working with ccp seems to be an incredible ability to party and do office shenanigans.
The demands on resume and background is most likely secondary or a business PR scam.

You will find our job listings here. I'm specifically looking for experienced UI Developers and experienced Graphics Programmers to work on EVE Online in Reykjavfk, Iceland.
I judge CVs primarily based on related work experience and related education, including grades if there isn't a lot of work experience. (I will also look at the overall structure of the CV, organisation and clarity, grammar and spelling.) If shortlisted then you will be asked to take a programming test. If the results are positive then there will a first-pass phone interview, followed by multiple in-depth interviews with an interview team from EVE Development and HR.
A lot of people hired at CCP knew someone at CCP. The reason is simply that internal referrals are the most reliable referrals one can get. But a lot of people have been hired that knew no one, they were simply hired based on their outstanding qualifications and potential.

Good luck to all that submit resumes/cvs to CCP.
I too have BTEC, HND, BSc in computer Science.
Just because I would never want to work for a games company (This is where I come to relax, not work!), doesn't mean IÆm not interested in what happens in the process.
Do applicants have to do any aptitude tests? i.e. sit down and do programming****rcises ? I had to in all of my jobs. Funniest one was with Dr Solomons Aanti-Virus software, what a great company that *was* before it got purchased and removed by the competition :(

I am the world's best games programmer. I am so good that I do not need any references or degrees. Really, I am this good. In fact, I am so good that I do not even need to apply for jobs but have people knocking at my door everyday and I need to give them a boot to get rid of them! Now, I have very little time as I am very very busy and therefore will I make this short. Can I haz a job? --

I never have seen an opening under operations for a Tech Specialist, Junior or Intermediate roles.
Are these roles ever posted? or are they always filled internally?
