Originally by: hugodrax Is this typical? I just signed up yesterday and I dont usually play long stretches but it seems that its down more than it is up. That would suck since I have limited time to play games and if the times I choose the servers are always down I guess it is time to move on.
no, this is highly irregular. never had this big problems since the roll-out of exodus.
last night, it was quite funny. pop in, move two jumps, pop out again and read the funny comments. it has however stopped being funny for some time now.
i understand that they are working like crazy to fix it, and they must be under a lot of pressure, and me saying "hey, fix it already!" would be moronic. like in "no s*** Sherlock".
however. it's not like it can't be done well. there are onlime games that work much better and seldomly get these problems. one guess would be that they are suffering from growing problems - started small, still having hardware / software / policies for small, it can be difficult as requirements grow and the existing infrastructure starts to approach the limit. I know it is very difficult and most of all extremely expensive to go from a "quick-fix it works" solution to "always works no matter what". I'm not saying they absolutely should do it, maybe they can get away without doing it. But they should consider it. Having the servers bomb out on a weekend like this can be quite damaging.
It may sound like I'm wearing a tin-foil hat, but I wouldn't completely exclude the thought of some form of sabotage. Caldari or other.
However. A good infrastructure, made by people with experience in demanding network applications, should survive sabotage, power failures, server melt-down and other such issues, with at most one or two hours off-time. But that again is very very expensive. The last ten procent are always much more expensive than the first ninety. So in conclusion, I don't know. Just some thoughts.

There are multiple licensing models for SQL Server, if CCP use the same one that we do, you pay more up front but you can have as many users as you like. Its called a processor License ... to quote directly from Microsoft
Quote: Processor license. Requires a single license for each CPU in the operating system instance running SQL Server. This license does not require any device or user client access licenses (CALs).

Discussions regarding the EULA is really off topic, and I can't answer any of those questions because they're not something I know much about.

Howmany EULA's have stood up in court. There are usually a bunch of 'illegal' statemants (contractually speaking) in most EULA's that are there purely to scare people out of taking legal action. No I haven't gone through CCP's EULA with a fine tooth comb to check the exact legalities of it. As yet I haven't been annoyed enough to. Not to mention that CCP has changed the EULA on more than one occasion and while yes you have the right to terminate your account, most people have invested considerable time and older players such as myself money into the game, so the option to simply stop paying doesn't cut it.

That's the general idea - that's why they're written that way. Your first, automatic reaction is just to say "Ah, !^%& it" and scroll to the end and accept / sign / whatever. Then, when something goes wrong, like it has done today, companies (like CCP) who use the EULA concept can just point at this pseudo-legalese document and say "We're not obliged to give you squat".
Just the way the world works unfortunately.

As I've also said, you have all the information I have, as soon as anyone tells me more I'll tell you more.
But to be honest I think that they will investigate it and then post some news on what exactly went wrong and why. This kind of information will most likely come from CCP directly and not me.

The contract of the EULA would be legally binding in the UK so long as the terms are not proven to be unfair due to the position of one contracting party over the other, at least as far as I know.
The US might be different, but their legal system is a mess anyway, at least from what little of it we see in the news in the UK.

If we didn't live in a selfish 'my rights' compensation culture, they wouldn't need so many documents to outline exactly what they do and don't cover.

the news board is a great place for that sort of info. It isn't going to get lost with all the comments players are making

I must admit the server issues are a pain in the ass but overall they are moderately rare. The biggest annoyance is lack of information for most people.
I think we all agree that if CCP would at least put a regular update on the problems on the site then we'd all be a little less p'eed off. Even if it was simply a 30 minute update to say Phoned server bloke in London, found out he'd spilt coffee on machine then gone on a long Bank Holiday weekend trip.
Seriously though I do think wwe need updates made regularly.
Ok, so what the hell is this Golden Ratio? |

That can be easily fixed, all you need to do is volunteer to do some work for ISD, and you'd get your own Polaris ship. Provided you pass the application and interview(s).

Well, I have now been playing Eve for a month and the downtime on this MMO is a joke. Server connection troubles since the day I started, now the damn thing has been down for 2 days. I am half tempted to move back the DAOC. They never had any server troubles on the scale this game has...
The more I play this game the more it seems like an unfinished crappy beta. So many things just have not even been implemented in game yet. I keep asking questions about stuff, and the reply I always get is "not in game yet". Along with the connection problems this game is really starting to make me think twice about wasting my money on it...

I'm ok with the servers going down, its not a huge deal for me at all. Hell the WoW server I played on went out for almost two weeks, and my FFXI server (while back) went out for days at a time.
My only complaint is that it really does like like, "Reboot and Pray" tech solution.
CCP, if it isnt fixed, thats ok, these freaks can finally take a shower, God forbid, go as far as to clean. The people here that say, "OMGWTFHAX, UNSUBSCRIBE, REINBURSE ME, I PAY, WHERES THE SERVICE?" obviously have never been to an auto-mechanics.
But, CCP, if it isnt fixed, please just make a news post about it, make the servers unavailable, so that we stop getting second by second updates on what people see when the click the "Connect" button 400 times a min.
Right now it looks like your tech guys have no idea what is wrong, which means its time for some personnel performance reviews.

Yes, But only as long as you AGREE to the EULA. Thats why its called an End User License Agreement, not an End User License With No Right To Refuse or just simply an End User License.
