When EVE Online: Retribution arrives, so will a whole host of inventory improvements.
Team Game Of Drones has been working flat out to make sure that these are not only awesome, but useful and efficient for both players and our server infrastructure.
CCP Arrow is here to tell you all about the upcoming changes, and how they will affect the organisation inside your internet spaceships hangar in his new Dev Blog.

Random question jumping to my mind (unless already in): Corp Hangars show whether you're able to view or take - nice - but do they show passworded status? Like a small lock icon behind? Looking for more thoughts? Read http://aethlyn.blogspot.com/ or follow me on http://twitter.com/Aethlyn. |

Mmm updates to that window is always good...
And reading about the amazing client performance you get in Retribution, any chance at all that you could apply that change to the mail client as well - so that one actually can read (and find) mails older than a month?
Keep up the good work!

all those tings are nice improvments, and i look forward to test em, i really think they will improve user experience.
but i've not seen anything reagrding the actuall issue in containers behaviour.
actually, if i log out / login, the containers will loose their configuration (regarding the added item status), the behaviour will be resetted to default when the config panel shows the correct saved setting
it's painfull as it is actually cause after each login, moving an item in a container result in said item beaing locked (while in previous session, it was set to unlock new items added), regardess of the configuration reported of the container.
to restore the normal behaviour of the container, i need to open config, set it to "locked", close it, open it again, set it to "unlocked" and then, the item i'll add will not be locked.
next login, i'm good to do it again.
happen on all char / all containers / all stations, even after a clear cache and a reinstall of eve (whole comp in fact, hdd died in terrible fire, but that's another story).
hope this will be fixed, has been reported many time but i still haven't read anything about this issue, wich is really painfull to me (and many other with no doubt) |

Quote:Shortcuts can also be a good way to open and close inventories. Alt-C will open the main Inventory window. Alt-N is for Ship hangar and alt-G is for Item hangar. Alt-C was used to do open ship's cargo. is it actually a good idea to shuffle this short cut around? I'd opt to just leave this at its function, and have some other keys open the inventory window. Just my tuppence.
Quote:In order to cater to these two ways of interacting with wrecks we created a mechanic that checks if the player has the index tree expanded or not. If it is expanded, we add the wreck to the index tree and do not open up a separate wreck cargo window. If the index tree is collapsed, however, we open it in a new window. Very smart, that's a nice and automated way to handle this mess. kudos! :)
The only better thing here would be to simply have a "loot this!" button in the "selected item" window. So there'd be no need for opening it AND clicking loot, it'd be done with a single click. I'd highly prefer this to be honest.
Quote:We have updated how wrecks are displayed in the Index Tree. They now show the wreck bracket with all its useful information and the ship name and the distance. If a wreck moves out of range, it greys out but stays visible so that you can use the Index Tree to approach it. Issue here. Right now when a can is opened, and AFTER that it gets renamed, it still displays the old name in the tree. Please update the tree when a jetcan gets renamed.
Quote:No access means you canGÇÖt view itGÇÖs content nor move anything from it Please be aware that corp members still have to be able to _put_ items into divisions that they don't have access to. This is important, because sometime this is the actual usecase. Also for POSs.
Quote:We believe these User Testing sessions are the way to go with future development work Ok, how can I participate? Something that I see the point in, hope it'd make eve better :)
And one final thingie: Will I now be able to define the default inventory listing mode? Since I'm playing the game (2004-12-31), the first thing I do when I open an inventory, is switch it to list mode, without icons. That's the only mode which has the most information, and also, the sufficient amount of information, that I can do my tasks with. So, enforcing some unusable mode is very irritating, and would be time to set it. Also, since unified inventry, it more often tends to switch back to the icon-mode, which means more pain.
So can we set the default inventory listing mode now? |

Thanks so much! Because of this devblog's awesomeness the inventory tweaks is my favourite feature of Retribution, now.
CCP Arrow... wrote:we have changed the default behavior of the index tree in such a way that now when you open any inventory in a separate window you isolate the tree of that inventory. CCP Arrow wrote:You can now make the width of the index tree much greater than before, as well as minimize the inventory content area all the way down if you just want to use the window to view the index tree of a certain tab. CCP Arrow wrote:You will also notice a set of GÇÿ<<GÇÖ and GÇÿ>>GÇÖ icons to the left of the View mode icons in the Inventory window. These are the Back and Forward buttons to move between the inventories in the order you selected them within the same window. I'm confident, thanks to these changes in particular, that the new Inventory will be more practical than the old one, finally :) Giving us a lot of options to customize the inventory's behavior is much appreciated as well. Now if only the ship bay would switch on its own when switching ships...

Overall, very awesome changes to the inventory. It looks like you're going to fix a lot of annoyances.
One big point of concern (for me especially):
Quote:You will also notice a set of GÇÿ<<GÇÖ and GÇÿ>>GÇÖ icons to the left of the View mode icons in the Inventory window. These are the Back and Forward buttons to move between the inventories in the order you selected them within the same window. Please please please please PLEASE give us a check box to disable this feature.
I use the thumb buttons on my mouse to talk on TS, and when I have reason to have multiple TS/Vent/Mumble clients open, I use the other thumb button to work the second client. Needless to say, when I'm trying to browse the web and talk on TS, it is a HUGE pain in the ass. Every time someone asks me a question or says something to me that needs a response, I end up either going backward or forward on the internet if I have focus on the browser. When I read the highlighted statement, my thoughts immediately went to fighting with the inventory while trying to talk on TS. Overall, anything that improves ease of use is a good thing, but understand that there are going to be a significant number of players out there in my situation, and for them it will be a major headache, probably the BIGGEST headache of the patch. |

Nice work, the changes look nice.
While you are looking into corp hanger permissions, would it be possible to address the issue of not being able to directly drag items from a corporate hanger to the trade window? At the moment (even if you have the correct permissions) you must first move it to your personal hanger before trading it.
I understand this would probably be a small use case, but for test_free (the program that we have to give out free ships to newbies from the corp hanger) this is used very heavily and would make our lives easier. |

Exceptional work there Team Game of Drones!!!
love the fact you included and addressed some performance issues and not just usability issues!
One of the few things that ive really wished for is to get a group of minimised stacked windows to sit in their own area on the neocom. Pretty much so that 1 group of chat windows are separate from another group of chat windows when minimised in the neocom and i can see it blinking when 1 group of 'more important' chats receive a new message without opening them all up. Example being a bunch of intel channels all grouped into 1 window, and a bunch of social channels like alliance/corp etc... grouped into another.
thanks again for all your work btw! |

If not, please do this. irrelevant cause the price estimation is related to the region you are currently in, so the regional market could be flawed on specific items (both ways indeed) no, it's a global price
If it's too much to ask to be able to differentiate looting 3 caldari navy BCS from looting a 10000 stack of T1 scourges, then don't do it...but I'm pretty sure they have the means...
also, they would not have included price estimation if the region you were in affected a reasonable estimation of the price. |

I love the changes, but again the issue that I don't see being resolved are 20-200-2000 member corporations having to deal with 8 tabs and/or roughly 16 tabs based on security settings.
Not that WH life promotes 2000 people trying to live out of 2 corporate hangers all the time, but seriously... security is an issue in the corporate hanger array. Has nothing been done on this front?
A Corporate Hanger array imho should entail the same amount of storage, but instead of having corporate "tabs" on CHA's, have player hangers that are accessible to certain security levels and above, and having a shared function.
I know one of the joys of WH life is popping a CHA and potentially taking loot and that shouldn't change but there is a need to address my faction loots from kills sitting in a hanger 30 other people can access (Even if it is for the 5 minutes for me to change ships and prepare to haul it out of the wh). As an added bonus, this might encourage more people to be lazy and store valuables in whs longer and make pos bashes more rewarding!
Edit: I should note that corp tabs on industry stuff is fine, but a CHA just strikes me as inefficient or inadequate for security in a pos. |

Nice blog, looks like some good changes/fixes that will hopefully repair a goodly chunk of 'lost' usability if they deploy as planned :)
Also nice to read a blog that says not only what was changed, but gives the reasoning behind each change as well, all too often it's just "We changed THIS." and it can be hard to see what the perceived gain is, reasoning out your changes like this gives us a better understanding what you're doing and why things will work in a certain way, should help greatly with inevitable "Why it works like that?" questions that will asked ingame later :)
All in all, good blog, actually something to look forward too in a patch at last rather than dreading :) |

Thanks for all the work on this. It will make my and others play more enjoyable.
One thing Ive never seen addressed in any inventory iterations is this: There is no way to sort items by intended use. For example, say I wanted to sort out all modules I use for fitting ships, keeping them separate from other stuff. I cannot do it. Sure I could put them all in a can, but the automatic fitting tool in the fitting window will not work for modules that are in a can. I must keep all those modules in the main window.
Now say I want to sell some modules Ive manufactured. I pull them out of the industry can and place them in the main inventory. They are now mixed up with the modules I use for fitting. There is no way to sort those modules I want to sell from those I want to use for fitting.
All ore I want to reprocess has to be in the main window. All minerals I want to use for industry have to be there. All loot I want to reprocess has to be there. It all can get mixed up with the same item type for which I have a different intended use. I am forced to decide between keeping items sorted, or keeping them where I can actually use them.
How to solve? Make several actions work from containers. Example:
I can reprocess anything that is in a container. The fitting tool gets modules from the inventory area in the front most inventory window, and places un-fitted ones back in that same inventory. Items in a container can be sold. Materials in a container can be used for manufacturing.
The main issue I see here is volume change. Players could take actions that overflow a container. I see two ways of handling that issue.
One is to test if the action would cause an overflow before actually doing it.
The other is to create a new type of container which I call a bag. A bag is a container with no defined volume. Its as big as it needs to be to hold the contents. it would have no hit points, and if jetted it would go away with the items just appearing in a normal jet can. All a bag really is is a way for me to decide how I want to sort items. All the extra actions I listed above (reprocess, fit, etc) would be extended to items in bags, and just bags.

How about optional dual panes (and dual directory trees).
The addition of tabs would be VERY welcome; the directory tree can be very cluttered for advanced users, and very inefficient to work with. Configurable tabs would solve this, perhaps different set of tabs (color coded/different UI locations or whatever);
Active ship locations (drone bay, cargo hold, corp hangar, ore bay etc) Corporation hangars Personal Locations, containers POS objects
Trying to emulate the old win95 file manager in 2012 is so 1995, what CCP needs to do is to develop a modern user friendly file manager (because it's a crucial part of their main GAME and income). |

Will do. This is a defect, will investigate if there is a technical reason we cannot allow users to drag directly from a division to the trade window. A few people have mentioned it in this thread so I would assume that this is a problem for more than some.

We tested this out using both Protanopia and Deuteranopia and it had a visible difference between the two types. Let me know what type of color blindness it is and I'll look into it for you. Hope that helps.
I have all kinds of problems with colors. The more distinctive the color the easier it is for me to tell what it is (sometimes). When the shades are close together I cant distinguish the color. In this case of these two icons the only way for me to tell that they are different colors is to use the digital color meter. To me they both look red. |

Wonderful to see such great new additions and fixes. I wanted to add 2 things that may have been overlooked.
1) When clicking on an Orca and opening the corporate hangars the focus is taken from your current window and is set to the hangars. In most situations (at least in my experience) players opening a hangar are doing so to put items into the hangars, not to take from. This basically means almost every time you open a hangar you need to click back to what you had open previously, and in the situation of a miner it would be back to their ore hold. It may not sound like much but when you have 5 players/miners having to re-open the corp hangars every 15 - 20 minutes and then reset focus back to the ore hold where the window focus was previously and then drag and drop to the hangars it begins to become a very annoying ui feature.
And yes I know corp hangars will be replaced with fleet hangars, but I'm guessing this functionality will also be carried over to these hangars.
2) Blueprints. Sorting and searching for blueprints vs blue print copies. There isn't a way to separate between these two items, either within an inventory window, or within the filter system. Now I understand the difficulity of seperating the two items because a bpc is a bpo but with a llimited number of runs.
What I think would work great is when filtering blueprints there are no real useful options to filter blueprints by. For example ME level greater then 0, or requires > then minteral type amount. If we could sort blueprints by for example licensed production runs remaining = infinite or > 1000 or < 5 we could then easily have a system that allows us to filter / sort between BPC's and BPO's. |

Great blog post, with lots of useful and well-thought-out information. I look forward to some of these improvements (the others I probably won't use just based on my usage habits).
Finally, a cosmetic issue that's been nagging my OCD for quite some time:
Is there a particular reason an item's text name changes to a darker grey (and remains that way until either re-opening the window entirely or doing Stack All) after the item has been selected + deselected? (Yes, the RGB values actually differ) If so, what is the reason? If you want screenshots showing it, or an official in-game bug made for it, I'm happy to provide either.
Things like this, as well as Bug 144789, indicate to me that some CCP devs (as well as QA) lack good eyes for pixel-level details. Shame. |

I don't like how locking in the secure containers currently works with regards to different clients/installations. Basically the choice whether an item put into secure container will be locked depends on client settings, not on the container itself. Will that be changed? |

I was the one that opened the FanFest roundtable bringing up issues about how the colorblind see things. Looking through the blog, I came to the 'limited access' vs. 'no access' icons for hangars. I can barely tell the difference between the yellow and red being used.
I will ask again what I said at that round table: Please use a different symbol. Maybe use an X in the circle for the 'no access'. It isn't like we are trying to see something that is encircled and crossed by the icon, like you would on a road sign to tell you what is prohibited. Relying on color alone to distinguish states is incredibly frustrating to me in the rest of my life (I work support for an equipment manufacturer who unfortunately uses 'amber' and 'red' for the same LED to distinguish states. I have to get a co-worker to look at them to see what they are for me). I really don't need it in a game.

This. Is. What. It. Should. Have. Been. Released. As First. This is exactly what we were asking for when we gave you our feedback in the first week of SiSi testing, while begging you to delay release. (instead of botching all the feedback that told you to do it this way while it was on SiSi for a month, then taking NINE months to figure it out it wasn't ready, with only a few token 'tweeks' after promising "weekly fixes till its as good")
Seriously, i would have gladly, ever so gladly, traded the last 9 months of crap for a delay of this 'improved feature' if this is how it is now. It is finally equal to the previous non-unified version in functionality and work flow. Sad thing is, if one goes back and looks at the initial feedback from SiSi, it describes this new awesome version. Why oh why could you not listen to us the first time? (have you learned your lesson now?) After this update i will no longer hate on the Uni Inv, only to hate on how arrogant the Dev's were through that whole process. (and in some limited cases continue to be)
If you guys ever realize the current public image of where you are taking the capitol "corp hanger" is in the completely wrong direction, this will be an epic update.
Glad you finally understood that we wanted the cargo-capacity visible while not needing that insanely useless border around our cargo holds and Ore holds. (Still not sure how that made it past the design phase, since you all claim to actually play this game)
Glad the fleet hanger no longer closes itself upon session change.
And i bet your payroll/subscription department is wishing you would have listened to all the feedback the first time, b/c then if you would have delayed pushing that pile of Pre-Beta crap on us in march, you might not have had near as many unsubs...as this is what it should have been, and you would have received few unsubs. Just a guess though. http://blog.beyondreality.se/shift-click-does-nothing -á-á < Unified Inventory is NOT ready... |

Instead of just using the same icon with a different color, could you make a slightly different icon to show the difference too? Circle with a slash to show that you have partial access to a hangar. Circle with an X through it to indicate you have no access. Then the color wouldn't matter. I can kill you with my brain too. It's genetic. |

One big point of concern (for me especially): Quote:You will also notice a set of GÇÿ<<GÇÖ and GÇÿ>>GÇÖ icons to the left of the View mode icons in the Inventory window. These are the Back and Forward buttons to move between the inventories in the order you selected them within the same window. You will also be able to use the mouse to go back and forward, if you have a mouse with such buttons. Overall, anything that improves ease of use is a good thing, but understand that there are going to be a significant number of players out there in my situation, and for them it will be a major headache, probably the BIGGEST headache of the patch. why you don't then attribute another config to those buttons in your drivers, then match them to your voip software? i too use the middle thumb button for the push-to-talk, and because of simiar issue i sat up a mapping and then it works
Because I don't know how to do that. I also tried downloading a program off my mouse manufacturers website, but it wanted to use cloud software which I'm not crazy about. Besides, if I'm understanding you correctly, doing what you suggest won't solve the problem. As long as the EVE Client or a web browser recognizes my mouse button click as "go back" the annoyance of having my inventory flip back a page every time I try to talk on TS will remain. I understand the usefulness of the feature, I'm just asking that CCP please allow me to disable it in the options.
While browsing the web, out of 100 uses of the button: 99 of them were unwanted interactions with the web browser, and maybe 1 was me actually wanting the go back a web page. What I'm saying here is, for many people this particular feature is going to be FAR FAR more annoying than helpful. Also, the answer isn't for the person to change their key bindings or modify drivers to work around some feature. Where ever possible, software should be designed to be customizable for users. This is one of those cases where it would be easy enough for CCP to give me the option to disable this feature.

Oh, one more Q, since the nice CCPs are answering... Will the 'scroll on drag' behaviour be copied to other windows we can drag to? Specifically, bookmarks. If you have a lot of personal bookmarks you're trying to move to a corp folder (or another personal folder), and you can't make both the bookmarks and the target folder visible by resizing the bookmarks window, you have to move your bookmarks to an inventory container first, which takes a long time and you can only do 5 at a time, then move them into the target folder, which also takes a long time. Copy/paste would also work great. |

We didn't just implement scrolling inside the Index Tree, but also inside the content areas of all Inventories so when you drag items to the upper or lower edge of the content area, it will scroll there as well. But as you point out Copy/paste can also work great in these cases so hopefully using one of those two options will make this specific use case easier once Retribution hits CCP Arrow-á-á|-á Senior Game Designer-á|-á @CCP_Arrow |

Just a thought with the looting stuff is there a way we could get a "shift click select" option in the inventory tree with a "right click loot all in range" feature.
When I run L4 missions and salvage in a noctis I usually tractor everything in range and let the salvagers run then loot all the containers one by one. When there are 20-30 wrecks on the field that's a lot of clicking even if I don't have to close the windows now. |

Can you make it more yellow (like the wreck icons)? Which type of color blindness is it? We tested this out using both Protanopia and Deuteranopia and it had a visible difference between the two types. Let me know what type of color blindness it is and I'll look into it for you. Hope that helps.
I just took an online test, which said that I was mostly Deuteranopic but also had significant Protanopia, with very little if any Tritanopia. That is part of the problem with testing with one type of colorblindness at a time - it is a result of multiple copies of several genes, and the human population represents a whole spectrum of colorblindness. How to program for that?
USE SHAPES IN ADDITION TO COLORS
It is bad enough that in the overview/local window the same symbol is used to represent someone who is in my corp, someone who is in my alliance and someone who has declared war on me and can freely kill me in high sec. Any chance of enabling/disabling the auto open option when dragging items to a container in the tree view or setting a longer duration? Or what about once you wait the 5 second time every container you mouse over opens instantly after the first? I find that most of the time when this feature happens it was unintentional, and the only options are to drag back the items to their original container, drag them off the screen because the original container is not displayed, or wait though 45 seconds of checking each additional container to find the one I was looking for. I could deal with it if I didn't need to wait an additional 5 seconds per container after the first one.
So yeah, enable/disable, or set wait time, or after the first 5 seconds any additional moused over containers display the contents without a 5 second wait. |

Looks great. A couple of suggestions:
Add the Ctrl-C shortcut. It shouldn't actually copy of course but a lot of people use it by habit, add it as an alternate to Ctrl-X.
When singling out a tree, can you force multiple trees into one window? IE: in a carrier can I have one window with my cargo and fuel, one window with my CHA+SMA and have any POS modules or wrecks open in a new window?
One other thing I've suggested in the past: when viewing the contents of a POS module, have a button to online/offline the structure, similar to the loot all button on wrecks. This would really smooth out the workflow for a lot of POS related stuff like silos. |

This is no longer the case in Retribution. One issue there is that they've lowered the total number of messages that you can have to 1500 (down from 3000, at least we think that's the old limit).
So, if you have a lot of messages in your Trash folder. Empty it and then use the Reset Settings (in the Escape menu) and clear your mail cache (and possibly relog). Then your older messages will show back up again.
The limit really sucks for those of us who subscribe to large volume mailing lists. Or who are in a busy alliance and need to keep 1500+ messages at our fingertips. |

Excellent, I am glad you guys finally found the time to address these very serious, critical and extremely annoying issues. I commend you for not abandoning the project after the hot fixes applied during summer patches. I go through moments with the UI of hating it at times and loving it other times. Hopefully after Retribution it will be all (or mostly) love.
Couple of things that I didn't see in the blog that I wish were addressed: * I am unable to get rid of the habit of double clicking on ships to open their cargo. It is counter-intuitive that it activates them instead of opening cargo like it does everywhere else. * I may be wrong on this, but wasn't there an option to insure ships through a right click menu? Why has this gone away? It is extremely difficult to find the one specific ship you want to insure through insurance window when you have hundreds of them between corp and ship hangars. * What if we have several windows open in the station, like three corp hangar views, 2 item hangars views, etc. Will all of them persist or only 1 corp hangar, 1 item, etc. and the rest are lost? What about opening specific containers? If I want station containers to always open in a certain location with certain parameters, will they be saved again, or will they inherit the settings of the parents group (corp, item, ship)
To CCP Arrow and everyone on Team Game of Drones, good job and thank you. If all these changes go through smoothly I'll have to finally admit that I like the new Inventory! |

Could you please improve the UI on the "survey scanner", that one used to know how much units of ore there are still inside the asteroid? Add some more information there, like the amount in volume! That would be really useful and would help us allot, especially those who are not afk mining.
Also there could be more info, like avarage isk value for the stack, remaining time to deplete with all strip miners on the asteroid , but I still be uber hapy if you put just the ore volume for the retribution.

Well done on reducing the lag in inventory-across-multiple-clients. But not a good job. Living in a POS has been an unending low-grade migraine since the change to inventory. 30+ seconds to swap a ship, and over a minute to load a hauler with cargo cans to expand the carry-load. Each and every time.
This 'user testing' you've conducted should have been done before unleashing this on tranquility. Hopefully you will continue to use it for any major changes to the basics of how we play the game, and listen to those testers, as you've apparently done here, incorporating their feedback. In fact, EVERY DESIGN CHANGE YOU MAKE ought to have some sort of direct feedback line to the devs in charge.
I'm glad the inventory is getting improved, but I'm pissed about the wait time.

Some may remember that CCP did actually involve in the Eve Community to test the new Inventory *BEFORE* they released it. There was ample time to look at it. Indeed, many wrote reams and reams about just how horrid it was.
And, to what purpose? Several months later we thank them because they pulled the wool over our eyes and say that *now* they have begun a brand new policy of highly rigorous user testing.

All neat stuff.
But what is the progress on EXISTING features that fairly frequently simply stop working?
I am assuming these bugs are well reported. Just wondering how fixing intermittent non-cascading feature crashes that can be fixed by reboot fair in the task rankings against turning out more wonderful new features and generic performance.
Its lovely to have a search function for the current container..except when you type string to match in the box and then nothing ever happens and yet all other aspects of the inventory continue to work. Even better when that same search in same container worked 3 minutes ago. True some of my inventories have scores of containers and hundreds of items in some containers but I am not getting too many items error messages just stopped code.
Of course inventory is not the only area of EVE UI code that stalls out on occasion: meters in the HUD, ability to select lines in overview, etc. But these errors in normally great features are often the most frustrating. Heh any chance there is some little common subroutine with a criticality detector statement ? |

Funny thing is if one sort by like name or something suddenly mails from 2008 pops up so they're all there, just a matter of displaying them. I for one would like to go back years at times.

Trying to emulate the old win95 file manager in 2012 is so 1995, what CCP needs to do is to develop a modern user friendly file manager (because it's a crucial part of their main GAME and income). This. Personally I never ever use windows explorer wich is bad for sanity, instead I'm using the total commander or anything similar in concept. So being able to add favorite tabs to the inventory would be awesome. Like..I set up a filter to show only bpo's then save it to a tab so I can access this view anytime with one click.

I can't tell the difference between the limited and restricted icons. My digital color meter is telling me the limited is 115,101,34 and the restricted is 136,47,34 but I can't tell them apart as it falls too much into the golden/greenish area. USE SHAPES IN ADDITION TO COLORSIt is bad enough that in the overview/local window the same symbol is used to represent someone who is in my corp, someone who is in my alliance and someone who has declared war on me and can freely kill me in high sec. Yes, I know I can change the colors of the icons, but why are these all using the same icon?
or... use both shapes and colours. It would be quite easy to take the yellow icon, keep the yellow colour and use another shape (like a triangle or a X or whatever is meaningful). Visually impaired people will focus on shapes, the others on colours.
Actually... since we're here the same thing should be done with the pos fuel pallets :\ even if the problems is the opposite. They have slighty different shapes (i ALWAYS need to read what they have because it's impossible for me distinguish them on sight) but the same colour. |

Will do. This is a defect, will investigate if there is a technical reason we cannot allow users to drag directly from a division to the trade window. A few people have mentioned it in this thread so I would assume that this is a problem for more than some.
This would be awesome if it is possible. Thanks a lot for looking into it.

In compact mode you would see only the compact member list.
Because almost always the situation is that: i dont care the local chat, and i dont wanna write. I just care the local member list, and the window is unnecesseraly too big.
It would be one of the best features since compact member list :D |

Where is exporting/importing of custom inventory filters?
Now, when I make a set of custom filters on my main account and main character, then I have to do the same actions for all (or almost all) alts anew, and any changes or improvements to this filters have to be done separately for every character. That really sucks.
Really want to freely export and import these custom filters, like overview settings. OpenSUSE 12.2, wine 1.5 |

My inventory wishlist:
- Keep inventory on active ship...wait you fixed this already! Sweet :-) - Stop my items from randomly getting locked when I place them in (non-locked) containers - Allow me to repackage items inside containers |

These changes look great, thank you!
Since you're already working with the particular areas of code, could you give corporate hangars, CHAs, and SMAs an audit log? Hopefully it's not too large of a change, and it would be a great quality of life improvement for those of us who live out of POSes. I'm not asking for proper access controls before the POS revamp, just a way to track what has been taken in the interim. |

YES! Thank you!
Although, one suggestion: when stacking windows, there appears to be no "close window" option for right-clicking; only a "close stack." If I want to close only one window, like the ship hangar, but I want to keep the items hangar open, I can't seem to do that currently unless I close the entire stack.
Otherwise, thanks so much for providing the option for players to construct the old UI! Recommended Changes: -enable ships wobbling in hangar view (pre-Captains Quarters) -add more missions (NPC fleet vs. NPC fleets that actually shoot) -less focus on graphics, more on mechanics -stop "fixing" what isn't "broken" |

@CCP - I have a (terrible) recording of some UI latency while fitting ships. Figured I'd pass it on, but who would want to see it? Was looking at performance issues together with a few other team members. Feel free to post it in this thread or the Inventory Performance thread. Though it may have been caught as part of the general improvements. Also you are welcome!

I posted in that performance thread, as well, since I saw someone else with the same problem I have. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. Some great improvements here thank you.
One extra I think should be considered is the active ship entry in the tree. I believe the active ship entry should always be vissible to the player in the tree by having it fixed at the top of the tree pain. In microsoft excel you can set a row of cells into a fixed position to always show on screen while the rest of the rows still scroll up and down, thats exactly how id imagine the active ship to work in the tree.
This gives the user a rock solid route back to thier own ships cargo hold, instead of having to scroll observ and click, its just a click. |

Not very reasonable considering CCP dosent provide replacement switches for computer mouses When Pi was clickfest like that, it was fixed and fast.
So could you please please tackle Science&Industry next? Pretty Please
Or maybe you could nerf PVP, make it take 10 clicks just to shoot someone, thats should be easy to implement.. Would be reasonable solution considering serious industrials have to suffer that for years now. [Insert something funny or smart here] |

Thank you so much for the improvements detailed in the dev blog. Looking forward to seeing them and using them in Retribution.
But two small questions. As a person who more or less always have my ship's cargohold window open when I play. 1. Can the state of the cargohold window persist between log-ins? If the cargohold was open when I logged out, I'd like it to be open wehen I log back in. 2. Would it be possible to implement a feature where you could set default location, size and stacked/unstacked parameters on the cargohold window? Like place and resize the window to your liking and click the window settings button and chose something like "save as default". So when you get in a brand new ship where you have never opened or moved the cargohold before, it will open with those parameters. |

Currently when you want to stack items together, you donGÇÖt really know if it works until you try, and then you might get a rude error message saying you canGÇÖt. We also noticed that sometimes when players just want to move an item into an inventory they will accidentally move it over an item that will give them an error message saying they canGÇÖt stack those items.
... a problem that so many user interfaces don't take seriously. You drag an item and simply want to move it to another window. But instead of offering the user a place where it can be dropped, the user has to scroll for a free spot or squeeze it in between other items. Why not offering the user a field/area which is always free and where the user can drop the item. As soon as it lands there, the item will either be rejected because it is not allowed in that inventory or it will 'disappear' from that field and becomes part of the inventory list.
second
Since the introduction of the new UI which included the changes on how to handle inventoriesand other windows, I was wondering why EVE goes all the "Microsoft Windows Style". I persoanlly don't like it and from my point of view there are better alternatives. I want to give you an example: back in the old DOS days a program called "Norton Commander" was developed and continued from there as "Windows Commander" and later "Total Commander" (and other spin offs). The principle is easy ... instead of one window with one list of items (which is MS Windows style) it would offer one window with two lists of items. One list is left, the other one right; they are independent from each other and can either show the same folder or different ones. Now you can easily move items between those two lists and navigate to different folders (and that is what we most do in EVE inventory ... move items from one spot to another). In comparison, the MS Windows style needs you to open two windows, then copy & paste or drag & drop, but before doing so refocusing to the new window. And if you do it for a while in MS Windows or EVE, you will often end up with many open windows each partly covering each other, so you have to move them around, minimize them, maximize them, close, reopen them, etc. That would not be necessary, at least when it comes to inventories, if you would use an approach with two lists of items in one window (like in the EVE player trade window) and a clever approach how to navigate "folders" (e.g. list of hangars, containers, cargo holds, etc.). Possibly, this is just personal preference of me, but maybe (for example if you try out Total Commander; it's shareware) you can see the advantages and take it into consideration for your next steps. |

Plastic Wraps are the containers used to do courier contracts. They apparently make the database people cry a bit as they have no set size (being determined by the contents of the contract)
Basically. A plastic wrap had almost unlimited capacity and was a unique container in that it could have multiple more containers inside of it (containerception). When the Inventory opened with a "plastic wrap" it would go and ask the database about all the contents in the wrap and if there were containers too, it would ask what was in each container. So we were having to check multiple levels down of an Inventory without you choosing to look as a user.
This is fine when you choose to look into a wrap of your own accord, we make one call and it is quick. But the game was deciding to check all wraps you had access too in a station and this was just taking far too long as it was having to load them all up.
Regarding restriction icons The restriction icons will have instant tooltips that should help tell you what access you have where, but we hear your concerns. Feel free to poke me on: Twitter |

Hi, devs. Nice improvements here.
However a friend of mine asked me if there will ever be a way to multi sell junk on stations? Nowadays it takes lots of time to filter junk one will get from looting rats.
As I think of his idea now I also have tonns of junk splitted in stacks of 2-10 items per type which would be of better use on the market. And I'm not going to sell any of that atm, because those several hundred millions of isk just does not worth the time invested in selling.
Here are two ways of doing that:
1) Just select bunch of stuff and use "sell all at best price". This should sell every selected packaged item to the topmost avaliable buy order. However the prices may suddenly drop down and people will end selling stuff for cheap.
2) Better way. Create a "sell all" button in the inventory and flash a window that will contain check list of wares one have in the inventory, their amount, buy prices with deviation from regional average, profit per line, total profit. In fact it would be even better to make stuff checked if it was previously selected in the inventory.

That would be super slick. On Duality --> If we drag the drone bay from the active ship to the neocom it creates a button that only opens the drone bay of that specific ship, not any active ship.

Just tested it on Bucky. Fleet hangers, drone bays, and drone bays are linked to ship specific windows. There is also no short cuts in the neocom inventory list for those bays.
Adding those would be a nice touch. |

I regularly have been cursing the inventory (sorry) and everything in the dev blog matters not one bit to me, performance aside, except this:
Quote:if you donGÇÖt want the wreck window to open up in a random spot one of the neat things you can do is stack it once to your active shipGÇÖs cargo window and from then on it will always open stacked there. Then simply clicking on GÇÿLoot allGÇÖ in the same spot will always close it again and show you the content of your active ship's cargo hold again.
When salvaging tons of wrecks with a Noctis the strange ways of the inventory are a real pain. I dont want to stack it to the cargo window, I want it left where I put it - in a new window, no tree, and close to the overview "open wrecks" button so the Loot All button is a very small distance away to salvage as fast as possible. Sometimes this sticks, sometimes it doesn't, and I cannot spot why not.
I also (ideally) want the same for containers, but in a different position -- for jetcanning on mining ops. This was all possible with the old system. In a nutshell;
- docked, current ship's cargo, wrecks (and pref cans) all need separate distinct states that don't keep overriding each other (this seems to happen more when using a new ship, or is it me? it also seems to happen semi-randomly). Different positions, sizes, window locations and tree/no tree (i only have the tree open when docked)
- when docked the inventory window, with the expanded tree, is ace but it needs to close when undocking and not try to show the ships cargo. and when redocking it needs to reappear in the same state
When I am salvaging, hauling or mining, I always have a no-tree inv window in the bottom left showing cargo or ore bay. When I open a wreck, I want it in the same place as last time in a new window with no tree. Same for cans. I don't want them affecting each other in any way.
Thanks :) |

"How quickly we forget."
This. And if i'm not mistaken, most of these 'features' that they are suddenly implementing were asked for in the first week of that testing...and were subsequently ignored by the very arrogant Dev's. Then after they "honestly thought they were ready" they promised those "weekly fixes" that culminated into a couple small hotfixes over the next month. Then there was nearly two months of complete silence and disregard for any Inventory updates. Then a small token fix in August, at which point we were told more would be coming in winter..maybe.
Although i can no longer rag on how crappy the Inventory is (as this will restore it to nearly the same functionality as before), i will still point out that CCP in view of this entire debacle has yet to truly learn their lesson. Even after the big PR speech apologizing for not listening to customers (and a re-commitment to do so)...they still managed to release this despite an INSANE amount of users telling them it was not ready. Simply put, they likely still suffer from the same arrogance that caused the great subs depression known as incarna.
The wool has not been pulled over my eyes, and frankly, i've even stopped really trying to give indepth feedback because CCP has shown in the recent past to not care how much effort i (or others) have put into testing their product and giving them good hard honest feedback, they are the Dev's and they know best...like when to 'not believe' what their customers are telling them.

These updates look all fine and dandy, but when is CCP going to look at POS Permissions/Corp Permissions? This issue is one that plagues those of us that reside in wormhole space.
When will CCP fix SMA access and put it more in line with that of a CHA so that members can have their own slots to store ships?
When will we be able to assign individual slots in individual CHA's? If I grant someone access to Low Slot 1, it gives them access to low slot 1 in every CHA with the same permission tree (corp, starbase fuel tech, and config starbase). This is simply unacceptable and needs to be fixed. That gives us 3 steps of security, with the final step allowing members to online/offline structures.
CCP needs to wake up and fix this unacceptable feature. Corps are plagued with thieves and stop recruiting because it is simply just too risky to try and bring in new members.
This has been brought up time and time again and not once has it been acknowledged that it is something that is being looked into.

It's not just a matter of trust and security. We accumulate a lot of stuff, and nobody knows who put it there, who it belongs to, etc. Containers are incredibly awkward to use as it stands.
It has performance implications as well. When I open the General tab of our CHA, I first have to wait a looong time for it to load all those items. Then, I have to really work to find what I'm looking for. Filters help some, search helps some, but it's still an ordeal. We have a Personal Equipment tab, that probably has more items total, but they're in containers -- lots and lots of containers, because people have to use GSCs to hold some stuff, and itty-bitty-mini-containers to hold the modules they need to access from ships with itty-bitty-cargoholds...
But the current access control policy being applied corp-wide rather than per-location interacts extremely badly with the narrow notion of corporate arrays with fixed partitions, sharing access control and naming.
Of course, even worse is the wallet system. Trying to manage a corporation's inventory of ISK is a nightmare. |

Really nice, well done!
One thing for consideration in future though is the operation of scroll bars generally. In most operating systems and apps, clicking on an empty area in a scroll bar scrolls the contents of the window up one page or screenful. In Eve, if I click say at the top of the scroll area, it scrolls right to the top, not just the next pageful up.
To me, this is not intuitive, and even is the only app I use or know of that works like this. Might be worth looking at this? |

Well, this is good news.
It's just a shame that its taken over 6 months since the introduction of Unifubared Inventory with Inferno to fix it all but it's looking almost as if you guys have cracked it. Finally.
I'll play around on Buckingham to see how it performs. I've barely played Eve since Inferno launched because of the car crash that was the new UI made it completely unplayable. Luckily I've had the Dust beta to keep me occupied.
That all aside I'll give this a go as soon as I'm able.

This is a major, major, major annoyance. I have finally *mostly* trained myself to avoid it, but it still screws me up in unexpected ways.
Not only is it counter to EVERY scroll-bar implementation I've ever seen (and I've used an awful lot, and implemented a few), but it has the unfortunate feature of making a HUGE, IRREVERSIBLE change as the result of any stray click.
Probably it's compatible with some bad UI out there, but I really, really, really, think you should just bite the bullet and join the rest of the world on this.

Reading most of this walls of texts, I havent found one thing i need really bad:
Search for an item which i put inside a box or ship-cargohold. Just find it.
Filter doesnt work right. I have L.O.T.S. of boxes, because i do invention and i have cumulated a shitload of crap, only way to keep these are put them into boxes. I wish it would be possible to put small boxes into big boxes, too.
Now sometimes i drag and failed dropping one item into the right box due to hardware issues because my mousebutton sometimes just releases before i want and due to the new interface with lots of open windows which i cannot make smaller because they are hardwired too big, it then drops into one of my gazillion of boxes and i have to get it back somehow. Because of the Interface i also sometimes move an item into an inventory i dont want, and i wasted so much time to get it back. I clicked all my boxes, filtered for the item and did this hundreds of times.
Then i used a third party tool (lucky me I found Eve HQ) and it showed me that my badly missed item was in one of my ships. What a surprise for me after clicking Boxes all night.
So PLEASE: make a search function which really works. I want the result of a search over all my stuff in all boxes everywhere and the result should be that it gives me exactly the place where my item is.
I am now using EVE-HQ for that issue now, its a workaround, it can save my day, but this should be fixed in the GUI of eve client. GÖ½ When your ship gets blown to bits GÖ¬ GÖ½ And you lose your Faction fits GÖ¬ \Gÿ+/ Don't worry GÖ¬ GÖ½ GÖ¬ GÖ½ GÖ½ GÖ¬ GÖ½ GÖ¬ Be Happy \Gÿ+/ |

Hi, I like how you made the new inventory system amost as good as the system we had before this. Finally. A small suggestion (I didn't read the thread, so might have been said before): pls. add unassambled ships to the list of ships in the Ships hangar. It's really iritating to look through your list of ships and not finding the ship you want because it's not assembled. Maybe add a square as symbol instead of a triangle (since it has no bays to drag stuff in). Rightclick menu should be added with limited options (including Assemble ship). |
