In the northern hemisphere, July is a time for warm weather, taking vacations, and snapping photos of all the gorgeous places you're visiting. And while New Eden is hot in the west right now (topical!), the Sisters of EVE and the Illuminati Team are bringing you an all new event for the July month that will cause you to break out your camera drones.
In this new dev blog, we introduce the Sanctuary Image Contest, a chance to get out and explore space and earn some cool stuff for your troubles, plus get a chance to leave a permanent mark on New Eden.
The first week of submissions goes here. EVE Online/DUST 514 Community Representative GÇ+ EVE Illuminati GÇ+ Fiction Adept

Interesting. I'm slightly surprised that CCP is using someone else's image hosting site. Good that the "not invented here" bias didn't prevent CCP from using a good product.

A contest that actually looks interesting! No alliance voting blocks. Exploration in the sense of looking around EVE (not the mini-games).
It looks like the entries will be limited to one per account but a clear statement might be best. |

So just to be sure I understand, we need our pictures with the UI showing? Because they won't look as great D= Although I understand why you need the UI there...
Either way I will be giving all of these a shot! It's an interesting concept
Edit: Just to add on this, could we submit the gallery with both UI showing and UI hidden? So 20 pictures in total per group? |

Goon station in B-DBYQ (uncloaked and less than 10k from the undock) Mr Vee Absolution in combat (this one must be taken from a expensive fitted T3 ship, uncloak and from less than 30k from him) DBRB body in space surrounded by at least 100 TFI or tengu recs (this one is easy)

N.B I've completed this first set.
This was really fun; while the competition doesn't require it, trying to get new and unique angles on each site provided a new breed of creativity in the 'sandbox,' something which i rarely find outside of the fitting tools.
Fortunately, i was able to get in the channel before it was full. Really the member list is irrelevant, seeing as no-one can talk anyway |

Since it is the first time they are holding such a competition you can expect things to be a little chaotic. Can you find any other photography competition held under the same conditions and environment? If you can, some of the rules of that competition might be useful to CCP, make sure you link it here. I can't help but think this is going to be mighty good fun for the gankers in the universe. How soon before the tears start rolling as highsec players wander aimlessly and dangerously into our beloved low sec and null sec play zones.
As they decloak they will be offering themselves as a token to the foolishness that is uninvited infringements upon places they are not supposed to be, that is, until they have paid the right price for safe transit.
Come one come all, snappers are all invited for a safe passage through all the nastiest of places, for a small uninteresting fee, of course. |

I'm excited about this. And I really hope that this first group is meant to be the training wheels segment. It would be great if, first off, some (more) of the sites required traveling to low/null/wspace, and, secondly, if there was a bit of a scavenger hunt aspect. Some examples of appropriately challenging targets for the second and third group:
Kruul's Pleasure Garden Deserted Starbase Storage Facility Clone Soldier Negotiator Wolf-Rayet EVE Gate (obvious, but the low-sec chokepoint on the way there will make for fun times as pirates try to prey on camera-toting tourists!) Sleeper Sirius turret Fort Kumar The Titan wreck in C9N-CC Two navy frigates from opposing factions engaged in combat A Gallente Large Stargate with a Lava planet in the background
Also, it would be excellent if there was some prize for actual BEST screenshot. I understand the impossible task of judging the tens of thousands of screenshots you will be getting, but maybe let the community vote and award a couple of PLEX or a pirate cruiser as a People's Choice award. To make for prettier screenshots, you could allow that the UI be hidden so long as it is a (near) perfect match for a submitted UI-visible screenshot.
All that said, this is an excellent idea. Thank you. |

Is there a deadline for when each tier of this has to be completed or is it just that they all entries for any tier need to be in before the deadline?
Also, I noticed that the screen shots need to be done all by the same character. But would about for different tiers? For example, if for Tier 1 I used an alt but for tier 2 I decided to use my main. Is that ok or should it be the same character though all the different tiers.

Also, in the info for the contest theres 2 links for how to create an account and how to make a gallery once you have an account.
Both links are to the same youtube page showing how to make an imgur account....
Also, off topic, theres a news story on the eve launcher about new bug reporting stuff....the link is buggy and can't be clicked on.
I like the idea of this contest but a sample image would of been a really good idea like the above poster says. I still dont know whether my first weeks screenies are going to be ok or not without system show info displayed. Ever read the rules of a real photo contest? So i would like to know if my screenshots show enough of the chat window to qualify, or if i need to retake them with the full MOTD visible?

Excellent. Another Exploration / Photo contest.
I remember years ago there was a contest to find 5 different Cosmic Signatures - Grav, Radar, Mag, Ladar and Combat. You had to have a screen shot of each site showing probes active and 100% signal strength along with the Eve clock.
If I remember correctly it was done in phases with the last phase having 10 different winners. The prize was a $50 credit with the Eve Store.
I was one of the winners.

Even though I'm a week late getting into this contest, hopefully history will repeat itself and I win again.

My favorite from my own set is the one of Luminaire Graveyard: http://i.imgur.com/qVAYJZTh.jpg
I wish there was an option to have the game automatically take duplicate shots with the UI disabled... Not only would it be convenient, but minimizing local and the overview while in lowsec just doesn't feel right.

Considering the speed with which help chat scrolls, just the answer will be sufficient. We'll be really disappointed if people are faking things, though.

Most of them do not. Some are landmarks visible on the overview, some you'll have to warp to a planet to find them. I'm not giving any hints on where to find them specifically; there are ways to figure out where the sites are (try asking others or through Google).

It doesn't matter who opens it, as long as you have a picture of the cans scattering.

I did 6 out of 10 sites for the second group so far. I have trouble with those : Sansha wormhole Prime Arkonor
The biggest problem is the Arkonor, i was going through WH space and couldn't find any. Am i just unlucky or should i look for it in null? Any ideas what will be the ore site name where Prime Arkonor might be ?

About the arkonor: I have found arkonor in WH-space before but since it's rare I guess you'll have to jump around and hope that you get lucky and find a site with prime arkonor. |

Damn. I was really lucky I guess, I warped to the planet where the wormhole is without even knowing it was there. Sitting at the gate I thought, "ok i have to fly somewhere until I find where that wormhole is". And it was right were I decided to go. I didn't even see my shuttle blowing up, I was looking at my ipad and then all I hear, boom. So I was not that fast with warping off. |

I have two questions. First, is the Sanshas Wormhole in group 2 the static wh in a certain system labeled as 'Violent Wormhole' (which is the one that I and all others have taken a pic of), or are there wh's during Incursions and we needed to find one of those? Clarification would be nice in case everybody is doing it wrong. :-) But I've never done higher levels in Incursions so not sure.
Second, I set my imgur galleries for both groups to 'Vertical' as requested, but did you actually mean 'Blog' layout (which puts all the pics in descending VERTICAL order) or really mean the 'Vertical' setting (which is in fact not very vertical)?

The landmark could reflect endurance, stamina, patience, tolerance, humility - the qualities it required to get to many of the sites. The final drawing is indeed random, chosen from a pool of contestants that did quite a lot to get into that pool.
(my opnion) It could be simply a small token, like real life explorers leave in the places they visit. Reaching destination is more important than "us" - we are small, insignificant, at least that is what the traveling and hardships, and beauty, sometimes convey to me. It would be almost unseemly or gouche to make a big deal about the marker. I mean really I've lost a few ships so far, to me a statue of a capsulleer sitting in a huddle of their wreck, cooking over a campfire with a smile on their face, would be about how I "feel."
But I like the idea of everyone who finishes having some kind of lasting memento to show the accomplishment, like the medal idea someone mentioned. I would rather have that than the grand prize to be honest. the grabbing hands, grab all they can. -áeverything counts... - depeche mode |

Seeking clarification on "10 corpses in a hangar" - do you mean a station hangar (as opposed to a ship's hold), and if so, I assume we still need the picture of our ship in the background (as opposed to being in the captain's quarters, for instance).
Thanks in advance. |

I bought mine on contract. Some enterprising individual had groups of ten up so I snagged one. A bit pricey (15 mil) but I didn't want to take the time to buy them one at a time... I figured it would be hard enough doing the whole thing in a Gnosis, and I didn't want to take any more time than I had to!

But I don't really see the problem about getting a pic of an incursion mom. It's not like in the early days of incursions when the mom was killed as soon as it spawned. Nowadays they are kept around for days, so entering a site and taking a screenshot before the rats kill you shouldn't be too hard. |

Well my picture of what I think is the Vapor Sea is in here http://imgur.com/a/kkSrz#0 - I compared it to others shots and EvE Travel and I think it's the same nebula, but I don't know a way to check for sure.
And I only got the idea because I see it listed on several sites as the nebula 'in the Stain region' or 'Stain's nebula'. So didn't know if I had to take the pic in Stain. Doubted it but I wanted to just make sure I have the right nebula before the contest is over and it's too late. |

Is it just me, or were there more places to visit in Amarr/Caldari highsec than Gallente/Minmatar ?
Being in the Gallente militia, Amarr and Caldari highsec sites had some complications due to faction police.
Week one This was just a matter of setting a waypoint to each site, then flying to them. But two sites stood out for me: - Jita Monument. Since I had never visited this before, and my overview was full, it took me a few passes of the 4-4 station before I could find the monument. Then I simply bookmarked it and warped directly at it. - Choonka's Diner. The only time the faction police managed to shoot me was at this one.
Week two - Politely answering a question in Help channel of any language. People who aren't paying attention might wonder why the help channel suddenly became helpful. - Mini containers scattering in a data or relic site. My first attempt at hacking, which is a fun little minigame. Though I don't like the spew. - Prime Arkonor. I never realized how dead parts of nullsec are until this one. I literally had to fly 10 jumps into null to find an Arkonor site. Then I lost my ship to the rats at the site. 10 jumps back in my pod. Then I realized I forgot to show the chat channel, meaning 10 more jumps. And the loss of another ship to the rates at the ore site. After confirming that my picture met the rules, I self-destructed my pod rather than fly back.
Week three - EVE Gate and Monolith. What Eve sightseeing trip would be complete without them ? Also, I probed out the Dead End system on a lark. There were 3 Dead End wormholes - Wolf-Rayet Star. After the number of wormholes I needed to scan down to find the right system on the other side, I've got to say that I felt like I was fighting against the interface to position the probe formation. I'd hate to see how it was when I had to position each probe individually. - Your pod on fire. It took me a while to find a corpmate willing to help with this one. - Steve. I never realized there were so many different ways one can place bubbles. From a gate covered in so many that I had to slowboat 100km through them to reach the gate*. Another gate had a large bubble on it, with a small bubble set to catch anyone warping directly from gate to gate and a can to decloak anyone it caught. A bubble on the planet I warped to to check the gate. A bubble sitting on Steve's front end, filled with abandoned drones, which seemed to be an attempt to get people to die to the NPCs that were camping the wreck. Also, there was a Caldari militia pilot sitting one jump from Steve. He was there when I warped through on the way to Steve. He was still there when I went back through a few minutes later. Why was a cal mil pilot sitting, apparently AFK, in a nullsec system that far south ?
*Good thing I used a cov-ops. The one thing I really feared in it was jumping into a bubble, which never happened. All the bubbles that covered a gate were on the side I warped to, not the side where they would catch me. Naturally after hitting the gate covered in bubble-wrap, I put it on my avoid list for the trip back. |

Week 3 is so far pretty tough but I learned a great deal. So far 13 deaths: 2x in a gate camp on my way to Steve (in a shuttle). Doing the podexpress 1x Because I joined a corp with jump clone service which is currently at war. Got podkilled in front of Dodixie and was wondering what all the red guys are doing here without Concord intervention 10x self destruct to produce the corpses cheaply and fast and not having to fly to Dodixie again....Very bizarre. Made a contract to sell them. Could be a new Noob profession. time effort ca. 30 minutes. Cost 665000 ISK for clone upgrades.
Lucky moments: -First wormhole I scanned and entered was a Wolf-Rayet.... -cov ops bombers with torpedos and target painters have a hard time to kill a shuttle
Next try to reach Steve and finalize week3: As soon as I can fly a Helios with a cov ops cloak |

Those guys in catch seem to have a liking for bubbles, and they also seem to guard their territory quite fiercly.
Wonder how hard the tenths one that was listed earlier in this thread here may have been. Getting a Sansha Mothership screenshotted in an incursion may actually be a lot easier than flying through tons of gate camps to steve ;) |

Yeah, I remember we met the other day on a site. But honestly following the other comments and according to my experiences I think you are either quite talented or lucky for making it to Steve. Either way works fine with me At my first run to Steve I was not careful enough..and died but my second run was an entirely different story. I could escape at least 3 gate camps on my way, made safe spots, was zigzagging through each system but finally in AOK-?? I got caught. The gate was so full of warp bubbles. I think several small ones and 3-4 big ones. I tried from several angles several times and finally some damn tower at a moon shot me down while I was looking for another angle to reach the gate without ending up in a bubble again. Should have done a safe log-off and waited a couple of hours...
But eventually I will make it. Helios or not we will see.

It was all luck - I only ran into a few gate camps and my rather oddly-fitted Gnosis was able to handle them easily. The only trouble I had was flying back to highsec after Steve - in the last nullsec system the gate was bubbled in all directions and camped by 15-20 dessies & BC's. I lost my scout several times trying to find a way, until I finally said "screw it!", warped in at 100 from a good direction, cloaked, and slowboated all the way to the gate. 100 km in an already slow ship, with a 75% velocity penalty, takes a very long time...
The good thing about taking a Gnosis is I never had to worry about the rats - with five large shield extenders I could mosy about and take as much time as I needed to getting the right angle for each shot.

Where exactly in the rules does it say this? Or are you making it up as you go along?
In the list of screenshots it says 'Prime Arkonor' not 'Prime Arkonor asteroid' I don't see how you can change it after the fact.
In the rules nowhere does it state your ship must be in space, it only says your ship must be visible and uncloaked. |

I'm having fun searching for all these sites. However, I am having some frustrations with the Wolf-Rayet star. I've visited a couple dozen wormholes already. Any strategies/tips? Are the wolf-rayet systems evenly distributed between C1, C2, ..., C6 or are they only found in a certain class? It may be all random, but if anyone has some helpful tips, they would be greatly appreciated! |

I didn't count them, but at first glance looking through the WH database they seem to be pretty evenly distributed through all classes. There are 162 WRs out of 2498 WH systems so your chances are about 6.5% per new system you check. |

How are you checking what kind of wormhole system it is ?

Scan for wormholes in k(known)-space rather than scanning down wormhole chains in J(WH)-space...that way there are less signatures that you need to scan down. I've seen several J-space systems with 80+ signatures. Also, pay close attention to any notifications that may pop up after jumping through a wormhole. If you do not get a pop-up notification about system wide effects, there is zero chance that the system is a Wolf-Rayet. If you do get that notification, enter the locus signature into StaticMapper to identify the environmental effects of the system. Good luck! We currently have the world's greatest linguists and scientists trying to decode whatn++ you just said. |

I've managed all the parts except finding a Wolf-Rayet Star. I've now checked around 60 systems in Syndicate looking for one of these elusive wormholes and still not found this bloody star! Wondering if we will be able to get confirmation on whether our photo sets are valid (so if they aren't we can re-take them?). It was mentioned as a possibility, just wondering if it may still happen before contest ends.
Secondly I concur with others who have said a medal would be awesome for people who participated (maybe a medal for each week, or a special one for all three?). Something to point at and say, 'Yes, I did almost die at Steve.'
Great contest, I had a lot of fun whether my entries counted or not. Moar live events please! |

I took my photographs with ship cloaked, or using the "look at" function to get better looking photos. Surely the Sanctuary appreciates artistry! Well, I just got done with all the pictures and submitted all 3 Tier albums to their specific threads. Definitely was one hell of a trip, a lot of jumps required to do this event contest.
I gotta say the most toughest picture to get was finding the Wolf-Rayet worm system. Took quite a few hours and a lot of scanning to finally get one.
The most dangerous picture to get was my own pod on fire. I mean come on, that's something no Capsuleer wants to see. Need to have an alt character or in my case, a very good trusted friend to get that picture. Thanks Kor.
As for the traveling into low, null and worm systems, that was no problem with a Nulli Cloaki Probi Loki.

Now about this :

I am pretty sure this rule has been in effect since the beginning. I remember reading it during week one and feeling a little anxious that I would be heading into nulsec and have to uncloak for pics.
Of course, I could be wrong. "He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty, he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself." |

This rule was not in effect from the very beginning, it was introduced during the first week. The devs already declared that the rule will not be enforced for the first week's set cause people had already started or even finished that one by the time the rule was added. But the rule is in effect for weeks 2 and 3.

I understand that is what CCP stated in posts in this thread.
But there was no notice in the Sanctuary channel MOTD nor in the posts that announced group 2 and 3. It would have been easy to add a "hey, we changed the rules on you!" note. I had no expectation that I needed to follow this thread, and I'll be angry if I am not eligible for the rewards after putting in many days this month to get all the photos.
I'm not even sure why the rule change was necessary. If they wanted more ships to get destroyed, I could just self-destruct a ship in Jita. As it was, I still lost a covops to a gate camp in null. Cloaking is not a free-pass. |

All I can suggest is making sure you're using an out of game site to check the hole you're in (the good ones can pull your location from the in-game browser if you let them, making this very quick). I'm not sure if it's possible to check your hole type without them.
If you're already doing that, sorry about the bad luck. Wolf-Rayet systems make up over 6% of all wormhole systems, so you are very unlucky. |

It may be that you've come across one or more and not realised. I know some sites with pictures of wolf-rayets have the sun next to them giving the mpression that it is 2 stars together.
I must have only gone through 20 or so wormholes and found a few but at first I was looking for a two star effect so missed a few I could have taken a screenshot of.
Also, about the whole uncloaked rule it was there from the day I started the competition which was on the first or second day. |

Actually I enjoyed the event immensely. I even dropped corp so not to draw the Uni into sov null politics when I skulked around taking pictures and looking for a WH home.
I understand that the logistics of it make the concept challenging but I do wish that next time there be a 'quality' aspect to the grand-prize winner. Someone encapsulated it perfectly as, "A monument to the winner of a raffle." Which is what it is.
Maybe crowd source it, by letting people vote for their favourite...

I think the raffle method works best...otherwise Gooonswarm would have every voter based competition/event locked down. As for suggestions for more I don't know. I think a raffle at the end is the best way to hand out the grand prize for something like this. Unless it's acompetition which has a clearly defined winner then raffle is fairest. |

I don't follow, sorry. Could you elaborate please? I will elaborate for you
Anyone who had any difficulty finding the locations could simply go to the results posting thread and look at other people's submissions. Next time if the results thread could be private in some way then more exploration would be required. (Or rather, people would have to spend 30 seconds on google instead of 30 seconds finding the results thread...)

Of course people can look up eve travel, use google, etc. but with doing so one still has to actively search and would learn some background info. Also looking into several sources makes it more of research work. Just being able to take the results of the other players is a bit too simple and does not feel like exploration in my opinion. It also takes away uncertainty wether one's result is valid or not. |

Do I get any extra credit for the week 3 submission? I got every picture snapped in time before the deadline but did not submit the week 3 album because it was incomplete. It is such a shame to get 28/29 screenshots only to be shut out in the last week not being able to find a Wolf_Rayet star which is almost impossible to find after weeks of dedicated scanning.
Anywho, here is my week 3 submission. Based on the upload dates of each of the 8/9 pictures I did submit them in time before the date of the 31st of July to the Imgur website. I am hoping I can get some sort of credit for the effort for week #3 I put into this event at least.

They gave the deadline, your argument is invalid.
Seriously though, why should they break the rules to award you when the rest of us worked hard as hell to get that Wolf-Rayet shot (and it was indeed possible, 6% of wh are Wolf-Rayet so a couple days at most of dedicated searching is all it would've taken). You were probably looking for the wrong signs, or found one and didn't know it, especially if you were doing 'weeks' of dedicated scanning for them (which is impossible).
To all the people who are saying 'oh can you ignore my cloaked ship?', or 'Oh I was late', or 'I don't have all the pics' - I don't think CCP is going to bend the rules for you, otherwise they may as well give everybody who plays all the prizes even if they didn't do the work for it. |

Hi CCP Goliath,
It may be a problem that I am planning on transferring this character into my main account whom has also completed the SIC separately. Is this the sort of edge case you've accounted for or should I just plan on submitting a trouble ticket down the line? Sorry that I can't hold off but I'm up against an expiration deadline, unless you can spare a few more PLEX...

Hmm. We do redemption on a per-account basis, so in this instance you would only get one set of prizes and I would ask you to submit a support ticket to claim the second. This seems like the most straightforward and risk-free way of doing things. CCP Goliath | QA Director | EVE Illuminati | @CCP_Goliath |

The prize will go to the new account that the character belongs to. If you feel this is in error you will need to submit a support ticket after the prizes have been distributed. That hasn't happened yet FYI. CCP Goliath | QA Director | EVE Illuminati | @CCP_Goliath |

I assumed they would have done all the checking before they announced the grand prize winner or that contest wasn't valid. What they probably have left to do is manually add the entitlements (or whatever they call them there) to each account. |

Actually my math formula was incorrect. It should be :
Week = Submissions x Images = Total
Week 1 = 749 x 10 = 7490 Week 2 = 237 x 10 = 2370 Week 3 = 148 x 9 = 1332
Total amount of submissions = 1134
Total amount of images = 11192
I saw the error after receiving an Eve mail correcting my mistake :
Quote:image calculation
From: Rangh Ovaert To: DeMichael Crimson INBOX
I think you are wrong.....It should be 11192 images. 749*10+237*10+148*9, no?
Thanks for the correction.

Now for all the other images submitted, that's quite a lot to check. Anyway, I think everyone who submitted images should get a prize.
DMC
The number of entries we got in the grand prize contest was directly related to valid image sets. If they just tossed everyone in without verifying the validity of the entries, those of us who did all three sets had our chances of winning lowered. I trust they would not have done this and would have put the entries in (10/25/50) based on successfully completing each set.
I have been fortunate enough to have been able to look behind the scenes at several MMO companies enough times to know they are probably just swamped with the manual process of adding the items to each account. |

It's not exactly free stuff: We took part in a contest and everyone who completed a tier of the demanded pictures "won", so to speak. If you didn't make pictures, not enough pictures or the wrong pictures or ****** up something else, you won't get anything, either way.
So of course the ongoing delay of the prices starts to get annoying, if it were a real contest with real prices, it would start to look pretty bad already.
That said, I can wait. With my luck it will turn out I messed up a single picture in every tier, anyway. |

This is disappointing, to say the least. At this point, unless someone from CCP posts otherwise, I'm going to assume that the entries weren't verified before the grand prize was announced and that drawing was invalid.
The thrill of doing the contest has faded, all I'm left with is a vague feeling that I got scammed. |

Now to be fair, the only thing we got "scammed" out of is our time. And this only if CCP doesn't get this ongoing delay sorted out.
Your assumption about the grand prize is stupid, by the way. The drawing would be invalid if CCP had drawn a winner and then not verified his pictures, but they have and so it is.
The rest is irrelevant: Either they have verified all pictures before drawing the grand price, which means they have sorted out a couple of poor schmucks with invalid pictures, or they haven't. In which case nothing would have changed, a few unlucky fellows wouldn't have changed much about our chance of winning and if they had been drawn, they would have been discarded and there would have been another draw.
Actually, I think we maybe even would have had better chances at winning with unverified pictures: More invalid contestants means less chance of winning, but on the of off-chance of someone getting drawn with invalid pictures, another draw would have happened, thus doubling our winning chance. Or multiplying, if this would have happened several times in a row.
Just my two cents. |

I know it's just my time, I said it was a vague feeling.
As for the validity of the drawing, I know the odds don't change much with invalid entries but I'll go through the extreme example to show how the odds are lessened, not improved.
Assume Alice, Bob and Mallory all participated. Alice did all three rounds and they were valid. Bob submitted entries for all three rounds but only the first round was valid. Mallory only submitted the first round entry and it was valid.
If the entries were not verified before the drawing, Alice and Bob each get 85 entries into the final drawing, Mallory gets 10. Alice's chance of winning is 85/180 or .47%. Bob's is the same. Mallory's is 5.55%. If the entries are verified before the drawing, Alice and Mallory still have the same number of entries but Bob's are reduced to 10. So Alice now has a 85/105 chance of winning or 80%. Bob and Mallory each now have a 10% chance of winning.
With invalid entries allowed, everyone's chance of winning is lowered.
And what happens in the first scenario if Bob's name was drawn? He does in fact have a valid entry. If all they did was check the first entry to see that it was valid and stop, he wins with artificially inflated odds.
That's the extreme scenario and I don't know how many entries are actually invalid but I do know it's non-zero. But again, in the end, the odds only change by very small fractions of a percent per invalid entry but they do change and not in our favor. |

Ah, point taken.
But I wouldn't worry too much about the contest, even in an extreme scenario they would have at least controlled all three tiers instead of just the first one to sort out invalid entries and the prizes for the pictures alone are only impressive if it's your first week of Eve Online.
If you did your grand tour of New Eden like me, you'll have at least a shitload of nice pictures as a consolation prize. |

Quote:And what happens in the first scenario if Bob's name was drawn? He does in fact have a valid entry. Then the draw is repeated with only Bob's valid entries this time. This changes neither Bob's nor anyone else's ultimate chance to win. It's just as if the first draw has never happened. Repeat for further invalid draws.
Quote:That's the extreme scenario and I don't know how many entries are actually invalid but I do know it's non-zero. But again, in the end, the odds only change by very small fractions of a percent per invalid entry but they do change and not in our favor. The odds don't change at all if it's done right, as outlined above.

Removing invalid entries if that person is drawn does not change the fact that the other entries had a lower chance to be drawn. In my scenario, if Mallory was drawn first, game over, she wins. Yet Alice had her chance reduced greatly, from 80% to 47%. No one would even know this until some time much later after all the entries were verified.
Invalid entries inflate the total entry pool, lowering the chance for the valid entries to win. Basic simple math. Repeatedly drawing names, pruning the bad entries and hoping to get a valid set of entries doesn't change that. |

Repeatedly drawing names, pruning the bad entries and hoping to get a valid set of entries doesn't change that. Wrong, you have to distinguish between the chance to get your name drawn and the chance to win the prize. The first one changes over the course of several draws when invalid entries get pruned (but as I already said this chance is completely irrelevant), the second one stays the same and that's what counts.
To make this a bit clearer, look at it from Mallory's point of view in the first draw: her chance of getting her name drawn is smaller because of inflated entries, but those entries are not actually dangerous to her because they can't win the prize. So the chance of Mallory winning the prize is not smaller than it would've been with pre-filtered entries.
Sometimes basic simple math isn't as simple as it appears to be. |

But then you will have to give us something else from SoE instead of Virtue Alpha Would have been nice to get the stuff at the first deadline when my characters was ca. 7 weeks old ...now I can afford to buy the stuff if I wanted to. None the less the whole matter slowly leaves a bitter aftertaste.

I honestly don't really mind if we never get the prizes. I had a great time doing the contest. It gave me a reason to go out and do things I otherwise wouldn't have done (yeah I'm a care-bear). I spent more time in null-sec for that contest than I did in the entire year prior to it. Sure I lost a couple of ships but I also learned a few tricks and saved myself from loosing a few ships in the process. Heck, the adrenaline rush of getting all the way out to Steve made the whole thing worth it!

I'm forced to say this reminds me a lot of the Shirts for the New Eden Open.. remember that event held almost a year ago ? Everyone who participated was supposed to get a unique shirt, but that still hasn't happened yet.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I participated. I enjoyed finding the places (well except for that WH, that was several hrs of my life I'll never get back lol). The prizes/gifts are secondary to that, and in the grand scheme not significant to me. But with that said, it just leaves a sour taste that you do the event, are promised something, and then are strung along for weeks or months.
Perhaps in the future, if you aren't ready to deliver, don't say you will. And then if you do decide to give out ships, or items, to people that participate, then in a week, or month, or so, down the road, they can log in to a pleasant surprise. |
