Now there is an announcement that I would love to see. I have been plazing with my new XBox360 and it is a great piece of hardware. After attenting Game Developer's Conference in Europw this year, I had the pleasure of talking to one of the senior people in charge of the 360 and he enlightened me that it is a DirectX based platform. I could only think that it could not be that tough to cross compile the game to the 360 from the PC. Naturally the game would require the 360 with the hard drive for client patches. Perhaps even 360 subcribers could order a new DVD, or perhaps download a burnable image, with the full build of the game at periodic intervals. Personally I think the ability to order that CD would be good for the PC platform people as well. In addition, the game UI would have to be converted for the 360. This wouldnt affect the PC interface but would be specifically for the 360 version of the game. There are certainly enough buttons on the 360 to manage this. In addition, for chatting the user can connect a keyboard to 360 or use a built in voice over IP solution with a headset that connects to voice servers. Integration of VOIP into Eve would be a great thing anyway. I know there will be some flamers and malcontents that will make silly statements about maturity of XBox360 owners. All of that is rubbish of course. In every community there are idiots; the PC Unreal and Counterstrike communities are beyond description for immaturity whereas some of the communities on the Xbox360 are great fun. People make such statements simply out of bias, desire to flame and malcontent tendenceies. Those that plaz Eve on the 360 will have to deal with the math and the other intellectual facets of Eve which will keep the vast majority of the immature players playing something else. The potential for CCP would also be huge. It would be only the second MMOG on a console and the console audience is just plain HUGE. There are hundreds of thousands of potential customers out there. In addition, the advertising for the PC version of Eve would be great. Its just a win-win situation for Eve. For the cost of hiuring a couple XBox programmers and porting the game they get a new market! Finally, since XBox programmers would have to be found anew, this would have minimal, if any, impact on the features of the game for the PC players. I know that there will still be some selfish players that will demand all dev resources on their pet peves but the rational people in the forum would have to agree that this would be an excellent move for CCP with FAR FAR more potential revenue than porting Eve to Mac or Linux. -- Rells◄ Replacing Local with a practical alternative.

YOu read all that, considered it, hit reply, typed and hit submit in 2 minutes? Perhaps you might try reading past the topic line for once. At any rate you are wrong according to the development manager of the XBox platform. I know you often seem to believe you know more than everyone else about every thing but if you had actually read what I wrote, you would see that I talked to the manager of the XBox platform in person. We discussed something like this. The fact is that the XBox people couldnt care less if you require the hard drive. Several XBox apps actually do. This little piece of misinformation that you have is a widely held urban legend. If it was true then there would be no reason at all to even have the hard drive because you couldnt use it. -- Rells◄ Replacing Local with a practical alternative.

I remember first opening FFXI when it came out for the PC in North America. I installed and was instantly surrounded by smart people of a like mind who enjoy cooperative teamwork and who do not mind waiting patiently for rewards. Most were literate and had a genuine love for the game. Integration into the exisiting japanese playerbase went surprisingly smooth. The first question when looking for a group usually was: Do you know how to use the universal translator function ? We'll be a mixed party. Then FFXI was released for the PS2 in North Amercia. Then I was surrounded by a bunch of teenage american kids whose teamwork consisted of everyone bashing on only two targets with absolutely impractical class combinations that held everyone who was unlucky enough to be in their group back. They were impatient, illiterate and could not be bothered to learn the game. In short, they were a liability as worst and a crutch at best. Around that time the first question I got was this: Are you an NA player ? We don't want those in our groups anymore. I don't want to see that in EVE. Let's keep EVE for the people that don't look at Co-Op modes in Halo 2 think they're ready for an MMO with the complexity of EVE. ******************************************* Sei du selbst. It would be a bold move and the server thing would need a huge overall and upgrade, and as we all know the lag issues that current numbers can generate would increase alot. Other then that I wouldnt mind seeing hordes of new players just as long as it didnt impede on my gaming experience.

This has probably been said already but I can't be bothered to read. CCP have already said they won't even make EVE for other PC platforms, because it would take too long for them to make a new client, and patch it every time, let alone making the server work with accepting different clients all the time.. therefore, what the hell makes you think they would do this for the XBOX!! Not only that, the XBOX 360 would suck badly for playing EVE, unless EVE was made into the other horrible idea that keeps being thrown around, of it being played with a joystick.. If it became popular on the XBOX, CCP would need even bigger servers anyway, because the lag would start getting bad. Sorry if this seems overly flame-like, but I'm tired of all these silly ideas about EVE on *insert platform here* when CCP have already said they never will. --- ---

I would rather see imprvement on the game is it is now then having to wait for Microsft to ajust there coding to Eve. My god I can only dread the LAG and bug it would create... On a shard server I see no troubles but that is pretty selfish (as long as it does not hurt my sand box) but then again the server are close to being lagged to death already, maybe the Asian shard will help a bit but who can tell until it happens I would pray for no Xbox version. Besides unlike FFX which is back by a huge legacy (and is mostly the only reason why it is played IMO cause it is one crappy MMO) Eve is more for a very specific type of hardcore players. You say don't think about the age/maturity of the ppl but you should keep in mind this is a rough game where you can loose much ISK in a few seconds, maybe a restricted label or parrental advisory so ppl who not whine coudl be used. But I fear the influx of ppl and the $$ of microsoft would ruin CCP stile of we by Islandish code warriors.... My 0.022 ISk

Quality above quantity. Let's keep requiring people to actually be able to operate a PC to play this game. And VOIP? Are you stupid or something? The only experience I have is the current Eve game play which is pretty laggy and the usual we will fix this and that from microsoft, we already wait for some implementation from CCP why put a 3rd party coder in the mixt? What the other one probably reffered to was the chip mode you could install on the very first release of Xbox to modify the console for game copy and hacks... Mind you I figured out she was wrong because most app will either save data on the HD or put downloaded upgrades or mods you can actualy use with some Xbox games. But your post was a bit imperialistic you could have just pointed out her mistake and not just block her. For my opinions they where clearly written in my above post. My objection are more for practical reasons but you seam to have a optimistic point of view of the offer required to addapt a game on the UI point of view. I do have lots of experience there and take your longest estimate and do x3 this is closer to the real thing, trust me. Well you don't have to but I do have so experience there.

Whee for pointless flames. An XBOX360 version could _VERY EASILY_ work. FF11 on the 360 is not a new version of the game. It is not a port, it is THE PC version running on an emulated softwear pack. How do I know? I work daily with it. Technically it wouldnt be very hard at all to make the 360 run an emulation program then load up Eve into that. The only catch is the UI. Basically, the WHOLE UI would have to be re-done from scratch and GOD would moving the camera AND courser be a pain. (It worked on FF11 becuase you can play the enter game without ever touching the mouse on the PC version) In theory its very easily do-able, but making it playable is another problem. When you say voice chat would be a problem. No it wouldnt. You COULD do it the way FF11 does it and NOT have voice chat. Though the 360 Dashboard can connect to someone else on your friends list and you can cha while playing, watching a movie, etc. So yeah, like i'v said, its very easy to do, it (in theory) could be done in minutes, but then we have the issue of controling your ship and UI, scince 360 TRC specifically states "NO MOUSE SUPPORT ON ANY TITLE" Exactly like that. (By the way, there is NO TRC saying you can or cant require the HDD. If you don't have it, tough, no FF11 for you)

No this is not a good idea Lag is bad enough as it is. And with the Xbox Live the lag is so much worse. I personally don't know how you consolers can do it. Also Eve on the XBox would prolly lose money since this game is trended more towards a mature audience. Its not fast paced or blind sided action. It won't appeal to many of the console genres. Eve is fine on a comp. SYKOSYS _______________________ "She'll fly apart sir," "FLY HER APART THEN!!!"

OR EVEN BETTER, to sell EVE to SOE so that they can provide the game with new high-quality content and even better customer support. *releases the big red button of irony* Seleene, I just had a shiver on my spine when I thought of EVE in a 360. I play eve because I hate most console games. There are a few worth getting and I do own most of the systems.(no 360) I would cry the day eve came to 360, or any other console. Cry like a child who is forced to watch a baby seal being bludgeoned to death. So yea, no eve on any console please. _________________________________________________________ The Fallen Shall Forever Be Remembered As The Emperors Finest!

Originally by: Takitoo I remember first opening FFXI when it came out for the PC in North America. No. No, No and NO. The last thing I want is a sudden swarm of stupid 8 year olds prancing about with their Xboxs playing a damn good game like EVE. (This is what Halo 2 is for) I don't understand why everyone wants to see PC games for the Xbox360. Soon enough it'll be outdated and won't be able to run PC quality games. Again. Also, EVE + Consolized (Note, SWG) = suck.

If you are going to post about this topic at all or even just reading because you have an opinion, some things to consider: -EVE is a niche game, it is not for the broad audience. That means that CCP will never be able to market the game to the masses(the masses wouldn't play it) and there are many reasons why this is good. However, it also means that CCP, just like the creator of any niche game, has the responsibility of finding as many people who it does appeal to as possible if the game is to grow and prosper. One way of doing this is making it available in more formats. -As has already been said, getting EVE to run on a 360 would take less coding effort than probably any other platform. The 360 uses DirectX which means that the same things that EVE relies on to run on your PC (and indeed what makes it hard to run on platforms like mac or linux) exist there. I'm not an expert on the EVE code but there are plenty of reasons to assume that once properly set up, updates to the game that function on both PC and the 360 could be produced with little (extra) effort. -They are already making a fricking PDA version of EVE. Granted it is just to check skills, maybe chat, and do station stuff, but it is being done. -For $400USD you can get an XBOX 360 which has the computing and graphics power to play EVE better than current PCs that would cost 3 times as much. -As has been stated, there is no reason why you can't require players to need the 360 HD. There is also technically no reason why you couldn't require them to use a keyboard and mouse. As has been stated above as well, you can plug in such USB devices to the 360 just fine. (In my personal opinion I think the current EVE UI and its modal windows are a horrible kludge that represents the best way the devs could deal with the complexity of their game given the technology they chose to use for it(python) and I would honestly welcome a streamline of the interface such that it COULD be used with a 360 controller. I think it would be a welcome change for both the PC and 360 crowd.) -There is NO reason why, if they did want to use a voice system, it would have to function in ANY WAY similar to how it does in games like Halo. As has already been said voice chat in organized corps is a must and if they did include something like that, it would only makes things better and easier for the players. -NO extra lag would result from people playing from a 360 any more than it would if they were playing on a PC. The devs have time and time again identified to us where the sources of lag are and they have also outlined what they are doing (and how much they are spending) to fix it. If you still want to whine about lag STFU and read Oveur's Blog. -All 360 games run in at LEAST 720p High-Definition resolution and could run up to 1080i. That means that with an HD-capable TV you would be playing the game at either 1024x720 or 1920x1080 which most likely meets or exceeds what most EVE players are looking at now and it would be BIGGER overall. (this point is for anyone who thinks it would be hard to read on a TV) -The platform does not make the gamer, the game does. People associate console gamers with immature people who like simple games because simple games are what consoles have had for a long time for various reasons. The simple fact is that if you don't have a console, that is probably because they don't have "your" kind of games, like EVE, on there. But if they did, you might come play. The other fact is that there are noobish 15-year-old *****-children on every platform, including the PC. It is the game that determines where they concentrate. On a 360, EVE would have the same affect there as it does on the PC, people looking for Halo get bored quick and quit. Not a problem. -WOW and FFXI need competition in the 360 market and 360MMO gamers need a sci-fi alternative. Why not give them the best? "Lead, follow, or get the #@$@#$ out of the way"

Well, so far all I have read, with few exceptions, is a list of flaming and emotionalistic responses in opposition to the idea. There has been people statiting idiotic things such as that people that p[lay a 500 dollar computing system are all kids. Others seem to have rated the maturity of all XBox players on ... well ... no grounds whatsoever. Others have simplz refused to see the idea from anzy rational viewpoint whatsoever. Cool! If the opposition is this weak then it must be a great idea. The idea makes technical sense; it makes business sense; it makes commercial sense. All the problems to overcome are trivial in nature and in fact overcomming them by redesigning the ui will even be good for the game. In fact, there is no RATIONAL reason to not do it. I say no. The reasoning is simple; its unnecessary. Its also probably not cheap, and its going to take a decent amount of developer programming time. I'd rather see the money used to go to advertising for the PC version. I mean, you can run EVE (though not well, but reasonably) on pretty much an average PC with a functional graphics card; most people will be able to play it. The only real problem is, simply, that most people don't know about it and haven't tried it. There are far more people with PCs that can run EVE then have Xbox 360s (and I'm going to guess that it is going to remain that way.) Not to mention, dev programming time. I'd rather have bug fixes and new content faster than have an Xbox port. I think most of the player base agrees. ------------------------------------ Humbug !

You have been shooting down any real cosntructive criticism here with flames. They would have to recode assloads of stuff, go through assloads of phases of alpha and beta testing, and create a new wing of staff members specifically for the X-BOX version of EVE. Now how long do you think all that would take?... Suffice it to say a VERY long time. At least 2 years and thats a laughable short estimate. Oh and I foresee you saying "wtf would be different about it all they would have to do is port it over!" Remember you said this yourself: Originally by: Rells the UI for the console version would be different. Why you even said that blows my mind, you see a vision in your head so it must be reality? Its called a dream. And to most people here, probably including 99% of the devs, a nightmare.

Personally, I'd rather CCP invested their cash into making EVE less laggy and adding new features to the current PC game rather than screwing around trying to please people who stupidly ran out and bought an Xbox 360 only to realise it just a PC with an un-useable OS with no real hardware upgrade path (without opening the case and voiding the warranty) and can do nothing but play games. Originally by: Rells Others have simplz refused to see the idea from anzy rational viewpoint whatsoever. You've provided nothing rational to indicate it's an effort worth pursuing. Originally by: Rells The idea makes technical sense; it makes business sense; it makes commercial sense. It's a new platform with a developer pool that isn't mature by any means. It hasn't been widely adopted by the gamer audience due to shortages in hardware that aren't likely to be resolved for at least another full quarter. CCP would have to hire at least one new developer who knows how to work with the 360. They'd have to be skilled, and I don't think available freelancers are out there that could handle a project of this size. They would have to decide on whether to rework the client entirely or port it. Either way, you've got two clients to support with any patch you do, which could limit future features. And having a second cluster design goes against one of the primary points of the game's vision. Not to mention the fact that MMOs are tiny markets to console gamers as a whole, and this is a niche MMO to begin with. So your commercial opportunities are severely limited, given most people don't play their consoles like they would play a MMO on a PC. None of this is trivial. Originally by: Rells Oh and Maya, I have his card and we had lunch for 3 hours and I couldnt care less if you believe me or not but you are WRONG. Saying this is not the same as proving it's true. Edited by: Winter Star on 26/01/2006 15:45:38 Mark my words a few years from now when a console that isn't online is the exception there will be a flood of mmo's for the console market. Consoles are a huge market and only growing. It's only a matter of time before someone develops an MMO that takes off for one. I don't understand why people seem to think consoles are only for dumb people. Think of the reverse... PC's are only for elitist nerds (which you've mostly proven so far actually ). Additionally as someone already mentioned - it's a game that determines who plays and sticks with it, not the platform. But my point is, ok EVE is never likely to make the transition and I don't think it would be wise to attempt it. However some day soon one game will, and it will make people sit up and take notice like everquest and such like did years ago for the PC.

Originally by: Rells Now there is an announcement that I would love to see. This would be cool. And CCP could hire the guys at SOE to redesign eve like they did SWG for the consols!

How many mmogs are currently on the 360? 1 - ff. How much potential would there be for ccp to capitalize on the 360 market? A lot! Why not ask for MS to provide financial support to make this happen?

Edited by: Kane Ululani on 26/01/2006 21:21:23 Originally by: Winter Star Mark my words a few years from now when a console that isn't online is the exception there will be a flood of mmo's for the console market. This prediction scarcely makes you the Oracle of Delphi. Sony mentioned a plan to move EQ to Playstation as part of the transition into EQ2, prior to EQ2's release. Quote: I don't understand why people seem to think consoles are only for dumb people. Think of the reverse... PC's are only for elitist nerds (which you've mostly proven so far actually ). Additionally as someone already mentioned - it's a game that determines who plays and sticks with it, not the platform. Consoles are easy and therefore attract a statistically significant number of very casual players with short attention spans. Such a user base would be a disaster for a game like Eve. It's not that console alpha gamers can't happen, but that they are drop in the sea. As for elitism, PC alpha gamers likely build their rig from their own design spec, find the optimal drivers, overclock hardware, manually hack opcodes to open closed graphics card pipelines, add complex cooling systems, tweak graphics configuration files for maximum frame rate, etc.... These players are also far more likely to spend large amounts of time learning the most esoteric technical aspects of game play. For example, there is a movement style in certain first person shooters called "strafe jumping". Essentially, the player moves through the air in a curve in order to bypass the engine's max movement speed restrictions. It takes about 2 weeks of solid 8-10 hour a day, 'til your fingers bleed practice to make this a conditioned mid-brain response usable under stress. For the life of me, I can't imagine a console gamer putting this kind of time in to be more competitive. In other words, PC players are generally more competitive. Historically, the few times that console gamers and PC gamers have interacted online on the same servers has resulted in unmitigated carnage. If you don't believe me, google sega and quake 3. When vQ3 for sega came out, Sega was only to play on sega q3 servers. The console fan boys made themselves so obnoxious on the Q3 sites, that someone took the time to extract the sega Q3 map pack from the console flash ROM and write software that enabled PC players to join the Sega servers. Sega Q3 died in about a month. The only way to prevent this in the future is by dumbing games down to the console common denominator. So in summation, PC users are elite and consoles suck.

What's the deal with so many people talking about how a game that needs a mouse wouldn't work on the xbox 360? You do realize alot of people emulate and play games on the orginal xbox that needed a mouse, and they use the joysticks just fine? Also, there are USB plugs in the 360 yes? They can make a keyboard/mouse 'optional' just like it is for ff11 on ps2. Ofcourse nobody tries to 'type' with the controller, they get a keyboard. Hehe yea how do you plan to say anything to anyone in teh chats if you can only type your commands out buy going through a generated keyboard ingame... As it stands now CCP is never gonna port the game to any console or any other OS. So live with it. Personally i dont care how powerful the X360s are they are just over glorified PCs. First if CCP ports it how are we gonna handle the lag from all those new people in the game if were barely able to do it now? The new 64-Bit servers are gonna go a long way in helping this. Secondly until i can surf the net and the forums while playing EVE im never gonna play it on the 360. EVE is not fast paced all the time and sitting there mining on the 360 is not gonna be peoples ideas of FUN... A lot of EVE is outside the actual client. Forums, Jump range planner tools, mining spreadsheets, production spreadsheets, TS, and a variety of other things. The game is growing and its doing it nicely were getting members who watn to play EVE the way the CCP designed and invisioned it. I dont want anyone who can go out and buy a console to pick up the game and play it and bring a world of stupidity into this game. Making a seperate console FPS/RPG style game based on EVE would be cool but not making EVE on a console. (Hell make that on the planets and find a way to link the 2 by giving corps the options to give missions on the console game. Or maybe not.) Eve just isnt fast paced enough for some. That face paced action only appears during PvP combat. Originally by: MAXSuicide only carebears call pvpers 'greifers' ehehehh....

Eve on a console would require re-architecting the entire game. Consoles simply do not work well for point and click games and until Infinitum's keyboard/mouse pad is released there won't be a suitable way to use a keyboard and mouse interface with consoles. Eve would have to become real-time controlled like a space sim to support consoles, the UI would need an overhaul on both ends, etc. Then of course the influx of players would have to be dealt with, which means it'd not be pheasable until after CCP fully deploys their new hardware and re-optimizes their code for the new setup. Now, the VOIP in game would be nice, personally however I think that really shouldn't be implimented without actually truly redoing communications (Each ship has short, medium and long range coms in both standard and encrypted formats that can be jammed/traced/hacked into for evesdropping) to represent that in game. Then there's the fact that microsoft will probably charge fees on top of what CCP charges. All in all the fact is this game needs too much done to it as-is before you could even think about allowing a new massive player base to enter. Like we'd need to finally find a way to remove perpetual pvp immunity of always being in a n00b corp. It's just not practical, maybe in the future, but not right now, it'd only further amplify the severity of parts of the game that are broken now.

I just can't see a market for the game on 360 or others for that matter. 1) Show me stats on the number of 360 owners with HDTV as the UI would need to be revamped for a standards TV resolution. 2) Show me the number of 360 owners useing the online feature 3) Show me the number of 360 owners that don't have a computer where they can install EVE (including lack of internet) 4) Show me the number of 360 owners that do have computer/net access to play Eve 5) Show me the number of 360 owners who are interested in an EVE style game that don't play EVE on the PC (market survey) 6) How many man hours (and wage) would be needed to conduct the port compared to expected revinues from the peramiters above. My guesses is that it would be in CCP best $$$ interest to further market the game on the PC as the number of world wide 360s is limited compared to net connected PCs. Remember the 360 did not do well in Japan and I am unsure how well it is selling in Europe. ----- David - Proud to be saving the universe since 1984

Originally by: Rells Yes, I am a game developer. Windows game to XBox is a rateher minor thing. Erm, No. PC -> Xbox was relitivly simple. PC -> Xbox 360 is not as simple, by no means. If you truely are a developer worth his salt you would know this. From official microsoft documents, some things that may need addressing: - Multithread your game engine...uses one thread for world updates and another thread for graphics processing. An additional CPU core can be used for audio, decompression, geometry generation or other game tasks. - Ensure your game memory footprint fits within 512 MB - Avoid walking linked-lists or any other data structure that has nodes spread across memory - Prefer UDP as the network protocol for most games. - Plan for voice chat within your game - Update your content pipeline to support big-endian hardware. Intel-based PCs are little-endian, while Xbox 360 is big-endian. - Design for the ten-foot experience. Use fonts that are readable on televisions (they are barely readable on a monitor, ffs) - Avoid using the fixed-function pipeline. It is not supported Note the last one requires a non-trivial change to EVEs graphics engine before it can even be deplyed on 360. EVE effects are achieved using the FFP. Quote: *snip* By testing it on an XBox360 they have tested in on all of them. My point was they are struggling with QA on a single platform and a single code base - let alone adding another factor into the QA equation. Quote: Not substantial. Minor compared to the revenue stream generated...Code base wise we are looking at retooling of probably less than 5% of the total code base. Id bid 12 programmer months if we were bidding this project. 5% change to codebase? 12 person months to port EVE to 360? Let me get this right, FFXI was announced May 2005 for 360 deployment. FFXI is more of a console friendly game compared to EVE, and yet the *beta* only just began this month on 360. 8 months? You think 1 1/2 people can port EVE to 360 in 8 months? a) Hiring experienced 360 developers/lead for the project to port EVE over to 360 - and to upgrade the engine. b) 6 million potential market? It would at least require one further cluster, possibly up to 3 if even 5% of those 6mil subscribed. You do the math on how much the clusters cost. c) Increased outsourcing costs for the already overstretched GM team, starting with one more cluster, possibly up to three or more further clusters that is at least a doubling if not a tripling of the support team. To name but three costs... This, for a relitivly small independant development house that may not even want to be massivly increasing their workforce. You do realise how dangerous expanding your workforce by 30+% can be for a small company? All of the above points are moving EVE in a direction that is not forward (i.e. in new content/feature terms) but just porting what's already there. Quote: Just as a side question why are you commenting on costs if you clearly dont know what would be involved in the port? Isnt that a little bit like a fireman lecturing his doctor about how to do an operation? Seems a bit silly to me. ..... The reality is that if you toss out the nasty, biased comments in this thread that cast a disreputable light on the eve community, .... You put this game on the 360 and you are talking LOTS of new accounts. Thousands of them. THAT is a good reason. Sorry. You decree on this forum (rudely I might add) that you are right and everybody else is wrong, emotionalistic, and flaming. Yet you feel the urge to flame anyone who has a different opinion to you - making out you are above everyone, when in reality on these forums you are no better than anyone else, game developer or not. You have some valid points which have already been acknowledged, EVE on a mainstream console platform would make a lot of money, just other people have differing opinions on how much effort and capital would be required to port EVE Eve Fitting Manager

They just weren't prepared for the level of growth they saw and ended up paying for that for a while. CCP has to have the infra-structure in place to support that growth before it can happen, otherwise that growth could hurt eve like it hurt WoW at first.
