The concern for our choice of granularity has been noted, we won't make drastic changes to the system or the assets before the winter release, but this is obviously something many are concerned with and we'll examine what we can do.
However, I encourage you to check it out on Singularity ( or TQ once it ships ) before making final judgements! Instead of a separate download, high-res backgrounds should be possible to download on-demand. Turning on an option of some sort could make the client download skyboxes of much higher resolution for the region you are in.
This could also be extended to provide more granularity, e.g. if you're flying around in The Forge it will download per-constellation backgrounds in that area. And if making backgrounds for _ALL_ constellation takes too much time, at least make them for the most popular regions of space.
E.g. 4 extra images for the Jita and the different directions would impact quite a lot of people. 84,000 AUR ($420) spent on NeX store for Troll and Profit. |

Making it on-demand would increase server stress, and the servers already deal with a lot to begin with. I would definitely prefer a separate and optional patch for more cube maps.
I've been playing EVE for less than a year, and one of the first things I felt that could be improved were the nebulae. I was pleasantly surprised to find out not too long after my personal comment that they were, indeed, being improved. I'm very excited to see these in Singularity. |

Imigo Montoya wrote:I'm liking the change but I'm not entirely sure I like the relationship between natural phenomenon and security status (and to a lesser extent racial colour). It seems a bit arbitrary and slightly counter-intuitive.
While the racial colour thing kind of makes sense (nations base their colour schemes on the local surroundings), I would have thought that the over-populated urban sprawl of high-sec would be more dark and grey, where the vast wilderness and freedom of nullsec would have more vibrant and bright colours. Think Los Angeles vs the Amazon Jungle, or New York vs Madagascar.
I think that might even be a psychological queue that would encourage more people to explore beyond the boundaries of highsec. Food for thought at the very least. I'm not trolling, but... to my mind, it makes perfect sense in a 'lore' respect... While I can concur that having more 'beautiful' or at least 'less scary' looking regions out there would encourage people to go exploring -- that in itself, in my mind, is the very reason why hisec looks so 'nice'... Those were the areas that the initial explorers from the EVE gate were attracted to and settled in.
The harsh 'scary' places were left til later... ;) |

CCP t0rfifrans wrote: So you will be downloading 201 megs, which are then compressed, I can't tell you the exact compressed size at this time. The maps were authored at twice the resolution we are delivering them in, and they are compressed. Ofc, they look much better uncompressed and in full resolution, so we might offer those as an optional download at some point in the future, for the die hard astronomy addicts with space on their hard drives and video ram to spare.
Yes please!
Witcher 2 was what, 15gb download? I think a lot of folks could handle the larger textures if offered, that would be great (same goes for ship textures too :-)

I've always wanted EVE to have this. Although I still dream of the day where every sytem will have it's own unique cubemap, this is a good step in that direction.
One of the first things for customization should be the EVE gate, as it should be visible from the Amarr homeworlds, IIRC.
This is one of the few things that makes me love EVE a bit more, since the cancelation/postponing of Incarna/WiS. |

I love what we're getting, and the teaser that it might be possible to get higher rez versions later is awesome :)
In a perfect world we'd have a separate texture for each star system, a star field consisting of only the stars in the EVE cluster, etc. But I'll take these new nebulas as a wonderful advance on the current skyboxes :)

They're not inside the wormhole, the wormhole only connects one system to the next, much as a stargate does now. Note that you can even reach other known space (k-space) systems via wormholes, that doesn't mean k-space is inside a wormhole.

Except with an on-demand system, it would be distributing data for thousands of users at a time, and that bandwidth could be used for better things that are more relevant to gameplay. Assets for online games are usually pre-loaded before any sort of live interaction between the player and environment occurs. This is done to ensure a smoother playing experience.
Imagine jumping into a system containing 1000 players who all jump into the system around the same time. Before ever having to deal with player input, the server would have to distribute cube maps to every player's client first. Each cube map is 3 MB in size. With a system containing 1000 players, the server would have to distribute nearly 3 GB worth of data, which just isn't practical when the server could be used for more important things. It's more efficient to have assets on the user's side than on the server's side. |

Distributing static data is a _SOLVED PROBLEM_, no one ever has trouble distributing static data these days. Where the **** do you think you download the client from, or the avatar images? Does that lag your fleet fights?
And on-demand downloads do not need to finish before you jump into a new constellation, as the generic regional background can be used until the download finishes and then next time you enter one of the systems it loads the new one.
There's no technical reasons why they can't implement my suggestion. 84,000 AUR ($420) spent on NeX store for Troll and Profit. |

Illectroculus Defined wrote:Looking great, but I have a couple of suggestions: Within a region you can still generate some feel of differentiation between systems by warping the coordinate space of the skybox, this is a trivial thing to do with existing shaders.
Can we fix the gates orientation in space so that they appear to jump in the direction of the destination system - right now every gate points the same direction.
Are the stars painted onto the nebula texture? Are the constelations going to be static within a region? /signed |

yet another x GB Patch containing things not needed & not changing anything .... CCP should really think about laying off 75% of the graphic designers and replacing them by game game designers & programmers ...
BTW the new fonts sucks also. Instead of fixing the one single character "Zero" in the existing fonts. Graphic department proved its justification by designing a whole new font .... and causing much trouble in implementing the change of font in the UI ... well done .... NOT. (i am talking of the nice UI/Common/Formatting/ListGenericDelimiter, we see right now in corp titles) |

There's no technical reasons why they can't implement my suggestion. The reason why they can't do the constellation granularity now is of economic and prioritisational nature. It took them nearly a year from talking about some company doing the high res rendering of the raw data until they are finally usable by us on TQ.. for 68 cube maps. Multiply that by a factor of 5+ and you get it for each constellation.. so, about 4-5 years ;-)
Someone further up said something about layers of backgrounds, with the big stuff being sector bound (not region bound, so a streched region could have several backdrops and a compact region only one) and then some local/regional stuff thrown in by good measure (read: transparent overlays of smaller things that scale when you move from const to const). I think that this would be possible and should be looked at. |

t0ri, I appreciate you're trying to look through a lot of replies but part of what caused all the drama over Incarna was CCP's mismanagement of expectations prior to launch (i.e. us thinking we where getting something more than a single CQ). Unless you want to repeat the same mistakes again, we need an answer on this question otherwise the first fleet battle involving almost 1000 pilots that crashes the node is going to result in some serious unholy rage |
