Ok, already on my third character now. This time I decided to play a stealthy Wood Elf marksman... So far I am VERY satisfied with it.

*yawn*
Played it for four hours, man this game is boring due to several bugs.
The sound code of this game is terrible, speech is only active 50% of the time, footsteps are non-exsistant etc. unless you have a soundcard with 64 hardware channels (have tried on 3 different machines).
It's decently pretty but unless you have HDR able gfx it's not anything special. The characters are badly animated (I'm referring to their face and speech syncronizing, texture tears etc.) and looks like something out of 1995.
What do however look promising is the story, too bad the packaging is not up to par.
Seek not to bar my way, for I shall win through - no matter the cost! |

or
"well u nice looking elf u are playing in the blablablablal" [conversation] pls insert disc 17 [ continues the conversation]

If it wasn't done anyway, and the one component I guess wasn't done, it would've been nice for Bethesda to adopt a system like the one used in Half-Life2
Y'know, that one where the people's emotions and faces reacted to a scripting system, that merely took the sound, and automatically applied facial expressions etc to it.
I want to see someone create a text->speech AI system that can actually be influenced by emotion, and that doesn't sound monotonous. That, I think, would allow games to become a lot smaller in size, but also allow for a LOT less voice recording (can you see how I'm trying to get games voice actors fired here? )

It is Oblivion Day but sadly idn't dawn sunny and bright as I thought appropriate. I have to wait till not only I finish work for the day, but for my brother to get home with my copy of the game he's getting for me. And there's a family thing on tonight...anniversary or some such I don't know what to do. -------------

The one thing that really ****ed me off is how your compass has markers that show mission objectives and nearby dungeons.
I disabled it but xbox players are screwed.

I'm still considering whether or not to buy it. Anyone who's stuck into the game so far: what's the atmosphere like? Have Bethseda addressed the 'dead' feeling of Morrowind at all? And...I've read concerns about the interface being too optimised for the console version...opinions? tyvm -------------------------------------------------- Loyalty, Integrity, Honour. |

10 hours in....
The interface could use some work, wait a week for some mods...
The radiant AI just completely makes the world come alive... So far I've run into people hunting out in the wilderness, I broke into a house to assasinate some rich bumbody and ran into a thief that was busy burglarising the house!
Another time I saw a dog (not a wolf) chasing a high elf through Cheydinhal....
I want more factions, thrown weapons, and a better video card... but all in all it's a great game... oh, it feels at lot less like a console cross over if you turn off the compass and don't use quick travel.

Edited by: Mirral on 24/03/2006 19:34:10 10 hours in and 2 restarts for new characters and I have to say is WOW!
The basic game is still the same... "Do anything u want and take the main quest at your leisure".
The monsters keep a par skill level with you so it always is a challenge and u can adjust the difficulty on the fly (for those who are teh suck).
I was on the Beth forums last night and there a lot of threads about the RAI (radiant AI). Sure... the people go to work... eat.. go hunting... socalize with others... sleep... etc which is teh roxxors! There has been pickpocketing by AI when you go afk for extended peroids and NPCs get scared when u have your weapon out when talking to them.... teh cool!
I have a beefy laptop and it runs well @ 1024 with med graphic settings and runs nice on 1280x800 (widescreen baby)with little graphics enabled.
One thing I do not like is that some of the monsters can get stuck once an awhile and it allows my orc to lay the pwnage.
Combat is awesome... blocking on the fly... different attacks (for those who rise in level in "Blunt"/"Blade"/"Hand to hand" weapons. At first it is a click fest but once u fight harder opponets (like in the gladiator ARENA!!!!!!!) combat gets technical (not eve technical.. but technical enough).
Eve has become a 14.99 a month skill leveler for awhile... Oblivion Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Highly recommended!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty cool game.
But, when you attack lots of enemies at once the sounds doesn't keep up. Other than that It's very good and I haven't noticed any other bugs.
The story is better than I thought and the game is very addicting

Edited by: Reiisha on 24/03/2006 19:46:10 Edited by: Reiisha on 24/03/2006 19:45:41 Soiler alert: I will discuss some minor spoilers at the bottom of this post. I'll warn you up front.
My first impressions, 6 hour straight game from when i got home from the store.
The speech has a VERY annoying bug - it pitches the sound down a lot, no fix, only after the first line of dialog the speech pitches up to it's normal level. It's crazy to hear an orc who looks like a wood elf say hello, if you get my drift.
Second, it crashes. Save often.
One thing about RAI: A lot of people complain how it's useless and stupid, but i noticed that characters can step through doors and gates now, which wasn't the case in Morrowind, with a few exceptions. This made me look for a character which should be walking around in Cheydinhal, and only after i saw 2 npc's walk into the inn it came to me that i need to think a little bit further.
The quest markers are very handy. They don't show critical things mostly, just things you can find after searching on the main maps a little, it's just to save time. I seem to ignore the compass mostly, so it doesn't bother me either way. ((Spoiler example on the bottom of the post))
What i was most amazed about was that the game ran really well, on medium detail, on my system (Athlon 2800+, Radeon 9600 Pro 256 MB, 768 MB DDR(, which is barely above the minimum specs. On the TES forums is also a post about someone who has the exact minimum specs, and he even managed to FRAPS some of his findings. People can find that post here. They do lose a lot of flair without HDR though - if your card can handle it, take the performance hit and play with HDR on, it's absolutely worth it.
The interface is a big point of discussion, for PC users. It's an almost straight conversion from the xbox version, but i found it rather easy to use after just a few minutes. It's really intuitive once you see how it works. It takes a little more time to find the extra functionality though (dropping items for example is done by shift-clicking, had to find the manual to do that), but overall, it's better than what i expected. I'd still have preferred a Morrowind like interface for the most part though.
There are some interesting additions to the gameplay, like the lockpicking minigame and the persuasion minigame. Once you find out the trick though, it's very easy to gain speechcraft and picking skill, but it gets progressively harder to gain skills (exponential instead of linear requirements).
For the rest, i've just been doing main quest stuff, and a few local sidequests. Especially one that you can find in Bruma is interesting... 4 plot twists in a 30-40 minute quest is daring, but a lot of fun. It shows the detail the writers went through to make the game complete, instead of adding subquests to a main quest. The main quest only stands out frmo the rest due to it's size, nothing more. All quests are refreshingly new when compared to the old RPG style of questing (bring me 4 rat tails, kill 113 goblins and 2 shamans, etc). The mini storylines help flesh the game out even more, especially if you take the very subtle effect of RAI into consideration.
I'll play on a bit more, dunno if i'm still alive tomorrow due to overenjoyment...
Spoiler warning
To come back on the compass - when you enter Oblivion for the first time at Kvatch (use the gate, walking through it does nothing... took me a while to figure out :P), i searched it entirely without looking at the compass. I don't even know whether it would have helped, even. The scamps and daedra are very tough for a low level character though, and a bit of frustration is guaranteed.
In any case, the point is that the compass is just a conveniency, not a game breaking device. Simply don't look at it if you don't want to... And it seems you can turn it off.
/meh, no room for more spoilers.
End of Spoiler Warning

GFX are sweeter than a 'Thorntons' factory and the weapons finally feel heavy!

Personally I think the control system is awful and considering the production values of the game as a whole, I find it rather odd that its so bad. Apart from that, graphics and everything else are nice. It doesn't live up to the hype but then do they ever?
pc version btw, haven't tried it on an xbox 360 yet.

obviously its better on PC. thsi game are not much of a combat sim.
but look around at other RPG's i think i saw only one apart from morrowind that had full control on the slashign and blocking ect.
any other RPG i played wether Sinlge player or MMO, all depended on skills, and clicking every were to go there

oh, bethsoft, where did it all go wrong...?
the animation is a joke, and a poor one at that - I've yet to see a well-animated figure, and could knock up better cycles with a week's work. Normal, parralax and specular mapping is shameful. Speedtree is as hideous as ever, and rocks, grass and other objects can still be found floating in mid-air. The conceptual design is nothing close to morrowind's originality. The UI is a joke, Dialogue is atrocious, the voice acting filled with third-rate "mid-atlantic" americanisations that have no place in any RPG. And combat is an even bigger, and more bitter joke; Western martial art again misrepresented as a lumbering hack-and-slash affair ignoring the realities of weapon use that is accurate, graceful and far more fluid than represented. Missing combat on horseback is shameful.
But... it's a gorgeous game. it's got a great engine, it's had care given to it's design. But it shows careless production values throughout. will it be a genre classic? personally, no. it's got too many flaws in it that any discerning art department should've caught. with player mods, it might well just surpass Morrowind, though.

Yeah I've always hated the huge fantasy style axes and hammers in elder scrolls. Hopefully there'll be a realistic weapon mod eventually.

the swords are bad enough. longswords that feel like they're half an inch thick... and let's not even get me started on the axes or hammers... *twitch*
part of the reason why when the art director on the MeMod, I emphasised reality in design.

I've been handling real mideval weapons for a while, and Oblivion is not far off in design. There are only limitations to the engine.
But then, what are you all talking about.... Immersion is something different than realism. People who complain about something not being realistic should ask themselves whether playing female walking lizards is realistic?
