How could anyone say this is bad, all it does is bring more depth and realism to the game play.

initially it'll just be a skin / perspective change that'll add more depth for some people, and provide an interesting interlude for others. if they add things like combat, it'll fundamentally change the game but otherwise it'll be eye-candy.
one thing that comes to mind is that I played E&B from beta through launch and when I've tried to interest some old E&B pals to try EVE, several of them have said that they don't feel enough attachment to their ship and they "miss" having a human avatar that could run around as they felt this made their character easier to relate to, and while I don't agree on that point, I did always kind of like how in E&B you docked and then ran around on the station grabbing missions and talking to other players and certainly would NOT be adverse to having that in EVE.
look at it another way - if the expansion/content team are working on this and the bug-fix/improvement team are still working on their side of things, you might well ask "sorry, but I dont' see what will be lost by doing this?"

We already have our own elves. The Intaki. Not only do they look sexy and practise a form of immortality, they're even conveniently split into the light/dark divide (pro-Gallente/Syndicate separatists).

well there is a lot of advance concepts here, its clear not all will make it to the final build.
If they did, Eve will slowly becomes the most skill intensive MMO ever. -----------

I really hate the sound of it. I don't want to waste time running around some stupid environment to do things when I could just press buttons instead.
It sounds like a complete waste of time.

to people flaming this thread: embarassing. you have NO idea what they are up to and why.
immersion is immersion and it is game designer game not you game.
Weirda care less if it in or not, but thread like this (30 ppl going on about why they HATE something they know nothing about, speculating Elven ears/perm death/combat/etc) is just a joke. no wonder they probably prefer to keep us in dark.
like planatary flight, they say they wouldn't release it until it would make sense/serve purpose in EVE, why wouldn't it be same with this?

Edited by: Umit Davala on 11/11/2006 17:04:25 Worst idea ever. If I want an FPS ill play Half Life, if I want to talk to virtual people ill 'play' Second Life.
*Sigh* and so the MMO world takes another step at being a big WoW clone.
Edit: I supose your right Weirda, but I prefer to try and nip it in the bud before it all gets too silly Why not just make it like The Sims and you have to make sure your char is fed and has been to the toilet? Where do you stop?! |

Dumbest idea ever. CCP has slowly lost their way over the past 6 months and now they are trying to turn this game into a SWG clone. CCP why can't you stick to what made this game great and different instead of trying to copy other games. I don't play this game to walk around stations. I play this game to fly awsome ships in space combat. If I wanted to walk around in a station or on a planet I'd play a different game.

Screw combat, combat would be nice. But really, all I need is some RP interaction... as well as alot of other players.
Walk in stations will bring alot more ppl to EVE and really I think that it will give alot more depth to the RP aspect of the game. --------

already is....
anyhow
i think it will be more like if u want to get something that u have in the station u will need to go get it and than bring it to the ship and fit or something like
like carry around ur bpo to a fctory slot or lab slot
such sorta things
i dont think they will implement fighting in station tbh

Does this mean that when I chase someone to a station and they dock I can dock after them and go hunt them down in First Person Shooter mode? Cause that would suck due to all the Counterstrike *****s we got here. =============================================== We are Watching You. |

I think its a great idea. Finally EnB type play. Yes, Eve Online is about ships BUT, it would be cool to then be able to customize the ships ala EnB. Walking around the stations will add another role-playing dimension to it. Corp offices will be CORP OFFICES. Then you will be able to see other players from other corps.
I don't see anything negative with this. I think that many of the ship-related station activities will remain the same, but having avatars will be a nice addition and will attract other MMORPG players.
I just hope that they don't bork the game with even more lag... Could be very serious... Let's just see what happens. |

I really like this idea. Adding more immersion and content to explore in a game is never bad. It'll help make EVE feel more complete.

Well, lets look at another game that does this: Space Cowboy Online. SCO is basically an arcady flying game with RPG elements of leveling, collecting weapons and minerals, and crafting new armors and such.
But each of the 2 warring nations have a "City" that you can "walk" around in. They have shops, skill shops, factories, research, and even a small pub. You can't fight in the city, and you use a generic avatar from the small group of selectable avatars. But it does add some immersion to the game.
EvE could possibly do something similar, have some sort of station deck with all the services, have a pub if its Minmatar or Gallente, and be able to give a visual representation of your character, other than your ship. Nothing too fancy, but it would add to the immersion somewhat.
A big problem nowadays is enemies docking in NPC stations in our space, and we have absolutely no way of getting them out. If we had the ability to walk around, you could visually confront the guy, and maybe have the ability to kick him out of the station, or kill him, sending him back to the cloner. Granted it shouldn't be FPS, as thats not the nature of the EvE engine, but it possibly might be turn based. But that would require a ton more coding than simply allowing people to walk around. Depends on what CCP has in mind.
Should be interesting regardless. ___________________________________________________ "I'm an engineer, not a miracle worker!" - Scotty, Star Trek: The Original Series |

I eagerly await the opportunity to engage in immersive activities with other punctuation marks. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

I understand peoples misgivings about this feature, and TBH I share them. However I think that this sort of thing, if done right, will make EVE much more immersive and it will seem a lot more "personal". I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens... ---------------

To be honest... I couldn't care less about seeing my avatar walk around in a station. The resources devoted to this could/should have been better spent elsewhere.
Additions like this are fluff. EVE has always been a game dedicated to substantive gameplay... not fluff.
Color me disappointed.

Edited by: Will Hunter on 11/11/2006 19:43:42 I like the sound of walking around, if its like freelancer - i.e. click the fittings screen takes you to a hanger area where you see your toon, but can't do very much with it.
Or a better idea and would probably safe time on developing models - instead of seeing your toon walk around, show the pod instead:
Pvp pod style would consist of bumping the oponents pod until the egg c r a c k s and the goo drips out.
Movement would involve either rolling the pop or bounching it back and forth.
A new set of pod first person shooter guns - shotgun (sticking out of hole in the pod) ----------------------------------------------
If at first you don't succeed, give up - you tried once already.

Well I donŠt see any positive in walking inside of stations (except that it could allow a higher amount of players ingame without having to enlarge the universe/servers).
I only hope, that CCP wonŠt move too many ressources from developing Eve to developing this station-SIM.

I agree with this, walking around in stations doesn't add much to the game and I don't find it very interesting. To be honest I couldn't care less about this I just hope this doesn't distract them from developing other parts of the game.
