It is my understanding that using the in-station environment will not be a requirement for capsuleers. One of my initial concerns was that players would be required to move through the station to check out their hangar, look at the market, run over to an agent, run over to fitting, then back to the ship a la Earth & Beyond. I've been told there will not be any unnecessary time sinks added to the game, such a having to run everywhere in station.

Honestly to me i think this will be a great addition to the game if/when its implemented. Not being able to see your whole avatar in this game is rather awkward if you have come from other mmo's as most of us have. While you may think it is just useless fluff and thats fine i would find the possibilities opened up by the addition of this technology very intriguing. Maybe opportunities to make isk outside your ship? Running a shop or truly being able to hunt someone down and assasinate them? What works for you may not work for everyone else, I would welcome this change if its not required and opens up new possibilites for exploration and social / monetary gains.
I find it rather ludicris that people dont like this idea, this community does seem extremely adverse to change which is rather odd. Some of us DO get sick of never being able to get out of our ships. Now would pvp in stations work again i dont know if its done right it could add immense ammount of depth on top of what we already have. If done wrong well yes it would be useless tedious fluff.
"z0mgs' the servers are still teh lag!"
really now? Yes so the servers are still unstable it is also a fallicious argument to assume that it will always be the case will it not? To just say we dont need any fancy new content the game cant handle it will just lead to stagnation of the content that ccp can provide for us.
Sorry for my ramblings I just kinda banged this out and rather suck at trying to get my points across. Bottom line is i think that if done well this and thier other plans "planetary flight/fight :)" could very well make this game the premier MMO on the market. -----------------------------------------------

I have a concern that stems from the sheer size of the Eve galaxy. With so many stations around the actual player interaction in each one of them would be fairly minimal. This may have the effect of drawing players to more populated systems such as Jita, Rens, Renyn, etc, increasing lag in those systems as well as high-sec ganking.
It could be done well as it could lead to a great sense of immersion. Imagine a bustling station where an Amarr is giving a sermon, Matari marines are practicing manoeuvres, etc. News tickers can keep you updated on recent developments. In the back of a seedy bar you find a rare NPC than when approached can be bargained to buy a cheap battlecruiser BPC if only you run a special mission for him. Corporation boardrooms provide spaces for meetings. You can play gambling mini-games against other players where you can bet stuff in your hangar, or ISK.
There is a lot of opportunity for immersion here, but they have to tread carefully and provide proper incentive for players to stay away from extremely populated areas.

This may have already been said but..
Those who play FPS know how easy it is to get plugged. Implant and clone costs would be immense.
Big no to combat.
I love old characters that post 'I've beeen playing the game three years' when I know their account has been sold on.

If this is so, then why waste time and space on this project. Or is this for the "Station Bears"? You know the ones like Zeppo who never undocked....
I personally dont want nor need it. But know its going to take up space on my hard drive for no reason...

Actually. This could be an interesting feature for mission runners. Imagine getting a mission to retrieve the data sheets from an Angel complex, bringing a couple m3 of marines along with you and boarding an "Angel outpost" to find the required items. Of course, you would probably need a friend to handle any reinforcements that spawned while you were on your mission. Or maybe just leave some sentry drones out depending on mission lvl.
I agree walking in stations opens up a whole new can of worms... But really, if you dont favor the idea... just stay in your ship. CCP isn't going to FORCE you out of your ship every time you stray to close to a station hangar.

why are you idiots flaming this topic... would it not be cool to just walk around a station for a break and grab a drink or 2 somewhere... why not check out the strip club on deck 39.
there is no way that everyone would spend all there time in the station because that would just be lame... but when taking a station think about a counterstrike like assault on the occupants(t's) as the invaders(ct's) hoping to find the control room and command control of docking bays, services, airlocks and anything else ccp can wrap their beautifle imaginations around.
this in no way would be a bad thing or make it a clone of any other mmorpg... i honestly dont see how you loyal subscribers could even compare ccp to other developers... no one has had the chance to make something like this before... it would add an insane level of immersion aside from just the space aspect and make it like a true futuristic second life mmo.
I'm all for it ccp... pave the way!

When u enter the station and exit your pod this game should turn in to : UNREAL TOURNAMENT '99 even the maps would fit in perfectly !!! and its probaly not to expensive to buy... so CCP get ready from some fragging.

Wow. I love to see people ignorant of the development process whine and cry that CCP is wasting their resources.
Listen up and learn something.
When a developer is working on a project, it has teams of differently-talented people working on the project. The problem here is that the teams don't always work at the same pace, and the content sometimes requires only a little attention from one team as compared to another, etc. If the devs are working on the graphics update, what are their regular programmers going to do. Does CCP just pay them to sit around and drink beer? No! (Well maybe a little :p) They put them to work on a secondary project.
Not EVERY dev is a bug hunter / art designer / engine coder / animator / gameplay designer / spreadsheet monkey (and I'm sure there are many more). So THIS is where this seemingly random stuff that "nobody wants" comes from.
Why aren't they working on any of a million other wonderful ideas? Maybe they are. Maybe this was the best marketing decision because it would appeal to more player types. Maybe this was the kind of code they wanted to have for future cool ideas (like planetary landings). Maybe this is good practice and substance for the new graphics engine. Maybe CCP is doing this so that White Wolf has a basic engine to work with for their new title that CCP is going to manage (thus increasing CCP's available revenue for EVE). Maybe it's because the game developers DO get tired of working with the same software for years on end, and actually want to "stretch their legs" by expanding the game in a new direction with new possibilities.
Maybe any of these or something I could never guess. The point is, WE DONT KNOW. I, personally, would love to walk around stations. I enjoyed it in Earth and Beyond when I betaed it years ago, and I'll enjoy it in EVE. It'll flesh out feel of the game and the storyline and give us a richer environment to play in.
So quitcher bichin' and come to terms with the fact that CCP didn't take all of their QA bug-busting staff and magically turn them into artists and animators for working on station environments. I'm willing to bet that the art department is well along in it's re-rendering of the ship models, and since they can't release it any sooner than Vista and DirectX 10 come out, they may be working on the station artwork in the meantime.
PS: I'd also like to note that in the software industry, not everything needs to be coded from scratch. CCP could well have purchased a pre-coded structure for character animation from another developer, and only had to throw skins over the models and draw up the backdrops. Once again, we don't know, so lets not speculate until we do.
