PROBLEM NUMBER ZERO : SECURITY & STABILITY
Combine the initially observed slowness of larger threads with the "ganked" messages, add a dash of security holes, and you have a recipe for disaster waiting to strike. Fix : keep these forums as "open just as beta" and reopen the old ones until these here can finally be considered complete and secure.
Problem 1 : Why are the sides cut off at an arbitrary width for absolutely no good reason ?
And no, to look at pretty Incursion-themed background pictures is not a good reason at all. There are two ways to fix this : either make them span 100% of the available width (quick and dirty) or make the width user-modifiable.
Problem 2 : Text is aligned to the "top", making it an eyesore.
Fix is trivial, center it vertically in the corresponding cell instead.
Problem 3 : Lavish waste of vertical space and too few topics per page
You reduced the "per page" topics count to a mere 20, but at the same time, you kept the big vertical spacing, and you have A TRUCKLOAD of junk taking up a lot of the vertical screen real-estate (as if wasting horizontal screen real-estate was not bad enough already). You still have to scroll up/down to see all topics on a page, so what the hell ? Possible fix : the quick and dirty way, you might as well make "threads per page" a user-selectable value (and 20 would be either of the middle option or the lowest value). After that, start cleaning up the junk on top, reduce it in size.
Problem 4 : Readability sucks.
On top of the fact that you're eating from the both vertical and horizontal display areas, SOMEHOW you managed to make the actual text EVEN LESS READABLE than it was on the old forums. I can't put a finger on it and say it's the font type or size or colours chosen for text and background, or maybe the weird contrast between the huge portrait plus large text beside it and the tiny text for the actual posts... but fact remains, IT IS HARDER TO READ. Fix : look at the old forum, copy the style as it was there. It's THAT simple.
Problem 5 : You ditched all the content of the old forums.
So far, the only news about it we ever got was that all old content will be simply forsaken, shoved in the soon-to-be "read-only" old forums. Was it really THAT difficult to commit to at least EVENTUALLY migrating all the old threads and topics from the old forum to the new one ? WHY ?!? Seriously, WHY ? Fix ? Even if it takes a few days, or weeks, or heck, even months, as long as you do migrate them one day it would be fine.
Problem 6 : The "quotes" are HIDEOUS.
You don't know what I mean ?
Quote:THIS is what I mean Fix : make them NOT hideous, duh.
Problem 7 : IMG tags, where are they ?
Sure, MOST subforums in the old format were not permitted to have images in them, but in some, they were. Also, the whole policy against ANY images at all is ever so slightly hypocritical, considering everything else. For starters, the fact you can select NOT to see any of those images if you don't like (say, if you're on a small bandwidth connection), and also the fact that we now get spoon-fed huge portraits. Plus all the junk in the background. Fix : bring image embed capability back, and limit image SIZE that's allowed instead of simply denying the possibility to post images at all.
Problem 8 : Signatures.
They don't work properly (i.e. "the way we were used to"). Fix : err... fix them ?
Problem 9 : You are now limited to 5 quotes per post.
Seriously ? So now I CAN'T respond to more than 5 people or more than 5 sections of somebody else's post, but I have to make new posts every time I don't want to subject anybody to a huge quoted block of text and an even larger response, so nobody really knows anymore what's what and where ? I could understand if by that you meant NESTED quotes (hell, even 3 would be too much), but NON-nested quotes ? Fix : differentiate between nested and non-nested quotes and remove the stupid limit when dealing with NON-NESTED quotes.
Problem 10 : No way to see which topics you already viewed recently.
Sure, the "open to last unread post" feature is nifty... for a while, WHEN/IF it works right (and it doesn't always). But that still doesn't do much good in knowing which threads you read recently, and which ones you didn't, not at a quick glance anyway... and with some people not exactly naming their threads properly, you don't always know which ones you already read. EDIT : apparently there's a tiny icon that differentiates that... sorry, not enough. Fix : color-coding for (partially) read topics, to differentiate from those not recently read at all.
PROBLEM 11 : WHY THE EXCESSIVE CACHING ?!?
I edit my posts, I can't see the edit until a few minutes later. I see somebody posted something recently as per the front page last poster, I load the thread, SURPRISE, the post is not there yet. Fix : heavily reduce this annoying caching time, or if possible, almost completely eliminate it. |

They will FORCE you to switch over. They're closing down the old forums. "Read-only" indeed. As in, you can't post in them anymore.

If you think these things are so easy, why haven't you asked the biggest question of all;
Why haven't they been fixed from the start or during the experimental phase?
Perhaps they are busy doing important things instead of messing about with SpaceBook.

Most of these "concerns" were posted on every test version of the forums so far. If they had nothing better to do than "work on SpaceBook", how about they should leave the old forums alone as they are now until they get these new ones working up to snuff ? |

In regards to old forum posts, get use to it. It takes a hell lot of effort to export all the posts from an old forum to a new one. I have seen several forums in my lifetime that struggled trying to get old posts into new ones. It's just not easy. And besides, aren't we all more concerned about lag at the moment than some measly new forum look?
I like this new forum better anyways because of how it's integrated into the EveGate system and how I can better search for old threads and keep track of them. The old system was too cumbersome to do that. |

Problem 1:
To fit different resolutions. There are people who still use 1024x768, even 800x600 on desktop. And make it mobile friendly as well.
Problem 2:
Do you write on A4 paper in vertically aligned at center as well? People read from left to right, top to bottom. Not from center to bottom.
Problem 3:
For easier reading. Don't need to cramp text making cell height same as font height. It's not late 90's, I don't want my eyes to bleed out with no CSS adjustments.
Problem 4:
It's not harder to read, it's hard for you to get used.
Problem 5:
There are gazillion reasons why. I think one of the main reason - CCP doesn't want new pilots read/search topics that are 5+ years old that are useless now because everything has evolved and changed?
Problem 6:
Quotes are great as they are.
To sum up, this is just "i'm used to that, I don't like this new" whining. Man up, drink some concrete and always be free to try something new. CCP - great job!

All of this and much more was pointed out during the forum 'testing' phase. Yet none of it has been fixed. Even the most obvious items that may require only a few minutes of work at most. So not much hope.

A CCP commitment would have meant just that much more of player frustration expecting results that never come. CCP probably did the right thing here to just honestly say that this will never be done. For whatever reason. |

While I refuse to jump on the bandwagon of "OH GOD NEW AND DIFFERENT THINGS WHINE WHINE WHINE", I will offer criticism.
As mentioned, the general layout could do with trimming some fat. Expanding the width of the post display area, and shrinking the character portraits of the posters would be a good start. The background of the post area could also do with darkening a few shades; the extra contrast would do wonders for the readability. And the quotes are hideous, yes. I couldn't give a toss about signatures, I always turn them off anyway so you can remove them altogether for all I care.
But on the positive side, all the new features are present and accounted for, and they work well. I especially like the "jump to the top" button that appreas after you scroll down a little. Although if yu're going to do a "Like" feature, there needs to be a "Dislike" one too. Yes, it's open to abuse, but isn't everything? |

I don't know if it's just me, but I sort of expect to open the first page of a thread the first time I click on it, not the last. What possible use could I ever have of opening the last page without knowing what the thread is actually about?
Maybe it's just me who's stupid and don't understand how to open the first page of a thread, does someone know if there is a setting or something I could change to open the first page by default instead? And while on the subject of settings I'd like to be able to disable the warnings about external pages. |
