Right now we are just killing time till next year when they drop in player owned items and have a fun game that doesn't get boring after 2 months. They know this, and they've changed the way they develope the game. Net year we will see a change. I have to respectfully disagree. 10k players online is a goal that has been set by CCP itself. If we get 10k players online we will have the opportunity to show them that this is an unachieavable goal right now, due to lag. If we get these players online and the servers start dropping people or going offline, we will show that the infra-structure is not ready to even fulfill their standards. I think it's better than watching a diminishing online graph in EVE-I. _______________________________________________

The Amarr championships already embarrassed CCP no end (even if they are too proud to admit it). 10,000 pilots in space - 'without a crash' is a worthy goal. It would be like a Prime 95 test for online gaming, but there needs to be parameters. Just having 10,000 online (sitting in stations) wont cut it imo. One good test would be to get all the pilots to set a return fixed destination of say 20 jumps and just repeat, going back and forth - the servers need to be stressed. But it is being done not by moving in and out the load from servers, but by geographically splitting the world. So if we all try to do a specific thing, like using the market, travelling to a specific region, etc etc., it would be a good server test, but not a good concept test, IMHO. I think that we need to get 10K+ players online doing what they use to. That would be enough. BTW, let's boost this. CCP has roughly 15 days to sort lots of things out _______________________________________________

I'm sorry that I can't remember who originally thought it up and give props to him. We do believe that this goal is possible if people don't dogpile up in a few systems or all try to log in at the exact same moment. Hellmar's been stoked about the idea since the first time he read about it on the forums - and it's very important that we keep him happy, so I hope that everyone will at least give it a shot. There's a strong possibility we can put something in the News as we get closer to the target date so that those who don't read the forums can participate as well. Can they take more than double the load they are under now if not at least CCP have a start point to work from. 2) World Record.... just think of the adverstisement and reputation that can be gained from this. 3) Gives US somthing to cheer about.

As I said before, this goal can be accomplished if we DON'T TRY to gather at one system or try to "brake" things. The idea is simple: get in the game, and do what you are used to. Not something that you would with "stress testing" in mind (oh, 10k players online!! I'll keep docking and undocking, or searching the market from 20 to 24 GMT ) We need to test the concept, not bandwidth or server capacity. And the concept behind EVE is about distributed computing. Statisticaly speaking, that means that the infra-structure should handle the load if we are splitted all around the EVE universe. Edit: oh, and as someone already said, it won't hurt to remember: let the word reach your corp mates. These forums represent only a tiny portion of the players that use the servers. _______________________________________________

Our community is very diversified, with people that play it for fun, to have fun with friends, and to have fun destroying the game play for others. These are the ones that Im afraid of. While this attempt is a user thread, players come to the forums, read it, and if they don't find it interesting, laugh once or twice and forget it. Those hard time griefers may post 1 or 2 comments, post some fancy sig, etc. But the low profile remains. Once CCP advertise it in the news, it will gain an "official" aspect. It may encourage sutch people to try to brake it. Maybe trying to gather in a highway system with friends, I don't know. The possibilities are quite numerous. Maybe I'm being a bit extremist. But you asked my opinion, here it is :) I hope this message won't raise a hell of a bunch of flames and etc and get this thread eventually locked... _______________________________________________

So expect a lot of lag on the 7th. I hope the server wont be to laggy, but i seriously doubt they can handle 10k players. My pesimistice preview: there will be 100+ ppl in amarr and the server will be rebooted. After the reboot everyone tries to login again, second crash, rinse repeat till enough ppl get bored. -- The worst thing you can do when suggesting a solution to a problem is to provide alternatives, people end up arguing the alternatives instead of implementing the fix.

Our community is very diversified, with people that play it for fun, to have fun with friends, and to have fun destroying the game play for others. These are the ones that Im afraid of. While this attempt is a user thread, players come to the forums, read it, and if they don't find it interesting, laugh once or twice and forget it. Those hard time griefers may post 1 or 2 comments, post some fancy sig, etc. But the low profile remains. Once CCP advertise it in the news, it will gain an "official" aspect. It may encourage sutch people to try to brake it. Maybe trying to gather in a highway system with friends, I don't know. The possibilities are quite numerous. Maybe I'm being a bit extremist. But you asked my opinion, here it is :) I hope this message won't raise a hell of a bunch of flames and etc and get this thread eventually locked... Stealthnet, You do bring up excellent points and I can see where your fear comes from. I guess the only thing I can say is in my opinion it would be better to have more people know about the event than to worry about the possible threat of griefers. It is like terrorists and terrorism, do you let them win by being scared to go out of your house or do you make their power insubstantial by not being afraid? Plus, since the event really has no central location, it would be hard for them to bring down the event. I think the worst that could happen is a lot of them show up and cause their usual problems and maybe bring down a sector. While in general I think this is a bad thing, the fact that they would show up would only add numbers towards the goal. "Lead, follow, or get the #@$@#$ out of the way"

CCP have already hinted that the 6300 people that were online back in June may already be such a record but wanted to beat 10K just to make sure. I played UO for years on the Catskills server which was one of the most popular shards for that game - and UO is one of the most popular MMORPGs - asaik there has never been more than 5000-6000 players online simultaneoulsy on any UO shard... I never played EQ but I suspect it has different shards also, and as such will have a similar amount of players playing on each one (no more than 5-6K is my guess)... so EVE has a great chance to make MMORPG history tomorrow.

The most seen at any one time, in the same world (shard for other MMORPG) The time of 20h to 24h is because a single time like 22h might not be possible for everyone, so if as much of people as possible do stay online the whole 4h, they will help to get an higher total with those that can't stay online that long... the goal is not to get over 10k people for the whole 4h but sometime between 20h and 24h GMT, and of course, the longer we keep 10k players, the better!

I am talking about the people who log in maybe once a week to check a skill and who don't read the forums. I think there a lot of these players these days. But at any rate it was fun. I have to say I am HIGHLY impressed with the amount of dedication CCP showed towards this event, especially DJ TomB with his "never before heard Eve music" on Eve-radio. Good stuff. Steini OFSI	Posted - 2003.12.08 00:00:00 - [182] Most problem is that only handfull of players read news or forums, we forum readers/posters are the EVE most addictived players and are anyway always logged on so out part doesn't make that much of a difference. Anyway, after castor and o december 25th I would suspect over 6000 simultainus user without any record attemt, just people playing EVE in finally better shape and little excited newbies runnin around asking questions all day long on their little velators (oh it's so cute, the little kids playing around us oldies dancing around the christmas tree, in this case a battleships, just remember that Tank CEO is a bad battleship, not because of his skills, but ...erm.. of his complications with a certain bodypart, no bad intentions or real facts but a man that is proud of killing newbies in frigates or does it because just he can doesn't get a high reputation score with me).

Knew right from the day this event was mentioned that it would fail and that many people would end up being somewhat disappointed. To be quite honest, I dont think there is a way to get up past 6300 people anymore, unless CCP manages to pull off some kind of miracle. EDIT- One good thing came out of this IMO, I wont have to see anymore of these "The Big Log On" sigs anymore.
BillyDigo	Posted - 2003.12.08 00:18:00 - [184] Well it depends on what you expect: I didnt expect the servers to keep up, and that didnt happen :) All in all we now learned that not to many people read these forums, and that next time a little more promotion couldnt hurt. But then still i dont think that eve is worth staying at home for, epecially during those precious december weekends. Eve is more like something to do when you dont wanna do other stuff... We'll probably have a better chance when tech II is here, and when we start promotion two weeks in advance (though multiple channels, but at least in ingame news), and on a dreary januari or februari weekend :P

For example, and iam very very sure I am not the only one who has better things to do then log onto a game over the weekend. Ive got home about 30 mins ago before you say there no clubs open on a sunday theres plenty. Iam sure there was loads of people out enjoying the weekend instead of logging onto eve.
