Sick and tired of seeing ships called "John Doe's Iteron Mk. V"?
Tired of witnessing an endless parade of ships whose owners haven't taken the few seconds needed to grace them with a name?
Do you name your shuttles?
Then behold - the ship name pool - a tool for the easy use of anyone having trouble thinking up a name for their ship. I name all my ships Pimp[insert whats relevant]
If I ever loose a ship and have to travel about pirate lands in a pod, I tend to rename the pod 'egg' when people see this on scanner 'I hope' they laugh at the name rather than think OMG HAAAaaahaaa he got PwnZorrED!

It's easier to generate names if you have naming conventions. For example. If I was given a ship by a corp mate, it will have the corp ticker in the front, by an alliance mate, the alliance ticker. My Cormorants, for instance are all named 'Snow [Something]' Snow Queen, Snow Fall, Snow Flake, are all names I've used. I cannot create a convention for every ship I fly, so some of them borrow names from other classes. my Kestrels either use my mining ship names, or my Cormorant names.

On my main (this char) I name all my ships according to size
Kestrels are Little Daddy followed by the number of times I've owned that ship, usually due to them exploding. I'm currently on Little Daddy VI
Caracals are Daddy (Currently on IV)
Drakes are Big Daddy (Currently on III)
Ravens are Whose your Daddy (Currently on I)
On my alt I name my ships things that reflect their purpose.
My Ares is called Lightning, top speed of 9500m/s sustained forever for blockade running
My Taranis is "The Punisher" because its my primary solo PvP ship
My Ishkur is "Death Becomes You"

A lot of my ship names tend to be in other languages. Currently my Typhoon is called Abflussrohr and my Tempest is called Fliegenpatsche which is German for drainpipe and flyswat. My Cyclone is called Chi'ing Fung, which apparently means 'gentle breeze'. My Stiletto is always called 'Combat Mosquito'. Currently I fly a Stabber which is called Descuernacabras. I leave it up to you to figure that one out, but it seemed funny at the time of naming.

I have had: Hot Demon Gel (V1 - V5), Lil' Hosehead, teh BIG Hosehead, Fast Little Hoser, Mishapen, Mistaken (for that odd setup), Thurd Burd (for the third Raven I was on, I think I have had six now...).
I have also named them after Canadian cities (go back to my roots). Named it HMCS teedotohdot (T.O is Toronto).
I named a shuttle 'The Yarrrr', once.

I used to take names from Homestar Runner, like Strong Bad, Strong Sad, Trogdor etc, then I moved on to characters from Terry Pratchett's Discworld, naming my badger "The luggage", viciously fast ships Rincewind and so on.
Left all that behind though, these days I go for real names, giving gallente ships girls names and caldari ships boys names. Sometimes I take those names from movies if there's a character who reminds me of the role I have in mind for the ship, or I simply name them after RL friends . I remember that one of my friends got rather upset when I told her I named a ship after her, which subsequently blew up in a matter of days. I told her that, naturally, it was her fault.
So it's a boring naming convention, but at least it's better than "defiler's whatever". Dunno what names I would pick for amarr or minmatar, but it doesn't matter since I can't fly them anyway.

I name my ships under a standard convention of Corp Abbreviation followed by something associated with the ship design, style, or purpose.
So, assuming Republic Military School (RMS):
Salvage Destroyers - RMS Junker/Scrapheap/Junkyard, etc...
Drake - RMS Flapjack
Kestrel - RMS MoB (Missiles on Boosters)
Rifter - RMS Magnet
Hurricane - RMS Dum-dum-da-dum/Paddywhack
Rupture - RMS Fang
Typhoon - RMS Shipyard
Dominix - RMS Fat Mama
Imicus - RMS Prober
Badger - RMS X (Replace X with a German phrase I found that, roughly translated, equals Tug-job)
Bestower - RMS Bestowed Betrayer (shortened it to Bestowed for the in-game, but the full-title I wanted reflects it's full meaning as a Minmatar pilot)
Retriever - RMS Lapdance (Strip Miners)
Shuttles - Some variant of Taxi or Taxi associated term
My one and only reserved name, if I eventually fly a Titan:

I generally name my ships in reference to how I lost the previous one, like I lost my caracal in an accidental can flagging incident "Never Fight In Gangs" and "Never Fly To M-0EEB" (you can guess how I lost THAT one...).
However I always call my ECM ships (blackbird/scorpion) 'HMS Primary'.

Main in a Nighthawk called "I Blame My Mother" and alt in a Dominx called "I Blame Your Mother" at the moment :p
I also name my shuttles after rubbish cars - Nissan Micra, Ford Fiesta, Robin Reliant and Audi TT are my most common ones.

I name all of my Ore Barges after vacuum cleaners. I name all my Ospreys after hand-held mining tools like Mattock. My Badgers are mostly random like "Beast of Bourbon" or "Bucket". Warships are names suitably majestic and whatnot. My ships that can cloak are all named things amusing like "Jaws Theme" or "Ambush".

A corpmate of mine confessed that he doesn't like fast ships (flying an Atron made him dizzy), so I named my slowest ship, a retriever, after him and I always take some time to annoy him and MWD circles around his industrials with an interceptor.
My interceptors are ofcourse named after Godesses, since I love fast ships.....

I named my Cyclone "Stormbringer" and my rifter/Jaguar "Errant Venture"
other names i've used are generally themed around hunters/predators for warships, or for haulers i have "[systemname] Express" depending on where it's based, for example a hauler from Rens would be the "Rens Express".

Moa = Rinoceronte (Rhino)
Cormorant = Scolopendra (big centipede)

I use names from the fighter types in R-Type Final, theres loads of different shiptypes that sort of cross over from R-Type to EVE so it works (Recon Fighter names = Covert Ops and Recons, Basic fighters = T1 frigates etc)
Also, LV-101 Grand Finale was just too cool a name to pass up for my Thanatos :p

I used to have a Nanophoon named "There Goes A Tenner".. I take the names from songs or such, whatever comes to mind and seems to suit the ship. For example I've got a Blackbird I've named "Born to Hand-Jive".. Just well, because.. It's twisted little ship.
My upcoming Raven I haven't yet pondered, I guess I might call it.. If I stand by with my Kate Bush -fixation... "Hound of Love" - yes I know, might be a better name for the Hound stealth bomber.. But still. I like it. Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. ^^

Thorax: The Rocinante
The name of Don Quixote's horse, or more aptly for EvE, and a personal favorite of mine, the name of the space ship in the songs "Cygnus X-1" and "Cygnus X-1, Book 2: Hemispheres" from my favorite band, Rush.
I tend to name shuttles "Shuttle of Doom". Most of my other ships I'm still trying to think up decent names, so they tend to be "The Rocinante II", etc.

If you want some seriously cool ship names, get Total War: Rome. Whever you transition from the strategy map to the tactical map in that game, there is screenshot with a quote from a famous classical era general, leader, or philosopher. The names of these great men can be found in the data files in the TW:R directory. They are listed out with their quotes (which are pretty good evebio stuff).
Just as an example, my carrier, one of the very first in my alliance so long ago, is the [SGS]Onosandor. Each ship in my not-so-small personal fleet is either named from this list or from the more obscure names found in Homer's "Iliad".

Hurricane: The Bonnie McNabb - named after my wife
Rupture: Dana's Delight - again, wife
Drake: Illustrious Ella - named after one of my ferrets, she died last month

On one of my alts, I named an Ishtar "Refusal to Pay", as a slap in the face to ore pirates who tried to steal from me while I was mining, only to be jumped by the sudden arrival of my alt.
BTW, this is not ment to disrespect pirates, who, I believe, add a realistic side to the eve galaxy, and a challenge as well. Still, it is important to protect one's assests, neh?

I sometimes like to misrepresent my ship's names, calling T1 ships with T2 variants "Delta Vite's <T2 name>" and vice versa. If I don't do that then it's either a name filled with innuendo or one straight out of classical mythology

I have named two of my ships after systems, and one after a player who left the game (in-game, they said that he died) just as I was getting a new ship.
My salvager is the Scrap Eater.
My Amarr alt (for roleplaying reasons) used the names Atonement, Redemption, and Salvation for her ships.
Other interesting ship names I have used are Arsenal, Seraph, Destiny's Bastard, Schlepper (for an indy), Faction Loot Courier (for a noob frigate), Ibis of Doom (an Ibis I used for scouting purposes), Worthless Piece of ... (a Reaper), and This Space For Rent.
If I get another stealth bomber, I am calling it the Squirrel. My Scorpion will be the Great Cthulhu.
Other ideas: Dragon, Stealthblade, Death(shipclass), Paper Bag, Possessed/Demented/Evil/Killer Scrapheap (for Minmatar ships), or Fluffy.
Another fun idea would be to name your ship after a celestial object. Perhaps a different ship type - throw off pirates, and call your 0.0 ratting Raven the "(name)'s Crow"

Personally, i name my small frig / cruiser-classes from Battlestar Galactica pilots; such as Kat, Racetrack, Cally, Novazek, Boomer etc.
The bigger type ships I name after the game: Conflict Freespace, also known as: Descent: FreeSpace ù The Great War, such as: The Eva, GTD Bastion, mostly all ancient gods of all earthern religions.

I use a simple method...
Have a list of adjectives (Angry, Happy, Sad, Furious and so on) and a list of animals/insects (Elephant, Rat, Cat, Dog, Locust and so on).
Then, whenever I need a new name, I pick the next item from both lists. I have picked the number of items in each list such that they are not divisible by each other, so I have lots of names and I plan to go on as adjective noun 2, 3 and so on when I run out!

I kinda wish more people named their ships in a military style with corp ticker infront of it (like navy ships are USS Nimitz, and HMS Invincible.
all of my ships are named in the following style
corpticker (with s denoting ship), abbriviated letters + ship number + ship name.
Also i like to name my ships in line with that race's ship types.
Minnie ships are based around pirate/freedom fighter, gallente, are named after mythical greek creatures/heroes, Caldari are named after birds of prey / animals and amarr will be after religious words (though i dont fly them) :)
e.g
Astarte - TYCS CS02 'Medusa'
Vagabond - TYCS HA01 'Renegade'
Tempest - TYCS BS03 'Patriot'
Claw - TYCS -TK03 'Razor'
Raven - TYCS - BS02 'Manta'
Though im not in a role playing corp i do like to feel "part" of something so naming my ships like this gives the feeling of being part of a military classification - even if noone else does it :)

I know I don't put any sort of ticker on my ships cos when I'm in ma safespot waiting for a target I don't particularly like them seeing what I'm flying. It's sucha tactical booboo to use your corp as a ticker. You may as well not change the name of your ship at all.
