we had problems during startup. we changed the node configuration to try and address the market problem that we are currently experiencing. we have had to reboot the database server now, startup estimate is 12:30
will keep you posted
oh and fixing the market is our main focus atm

probably gonna be more like 14.00 i'll go play a game that is free and if it comes up before then i might feel happier
maybe ccp will add a day to ll accounts bearing in mind all the server issues we have had this year so far ( and as point can we move DT to a US time zone so us EU players can have at least 6 months of uninterupted play and sitting around on forums waiting for the servers to come back up

Yes, and some people use **** poor arguments. Do you play 24 hours a day? I certainly don't and downtime falls in the middle of my evening, usually just after I manage to get the kids settled into bed.
So, $14.95 a month (which is more like $AU20 or so), I get to play normally maybe 2 hours a day if I don't want to be totally wrecked for work the next day. So it's costing me 50 cents and hour roughly to play. Still not a huge amount of money and tbh the money doesn't concern me, it's not being able to play that makes me cranky  . That and having to wait until the server comes up to change skills or do other tasks that need doing (such as fueling POS)

And some silly forum mod goes and locks the thread, even though it's a different topic.
Anyways, Australians are seriously getting the shaft at the moment. Almost every day 2-3 hours of my potential play time is cut short. If it were just 1 hour I wouldn't care so much.
Additionally, this makes it harder for us Australians (and other people GMT+10 or there abouts) to train skills with such an unstable play block right before night.
CCP, if you would just put priority on skill training backup a lot of the whines would stop? It shouldn't be difficult to do at all. C'mon..

I'm not supposed to do anything execpt play the game, can you dig that? When i'm doing my RL job and something goes wrong with it, i have to listen to my costumers say they are disapointed, or worst, refuse to pay me. But i guess you will figure that out when you finish high school. |

I also am in Australia, but no matter what time they do it, its going to inconvenience someone, this game rocks and I appreciate the fact that when something breks, they fix it NOW, not like others I have played.

I'm not supposed to do anything execpt play the game, can you dig that? When i'm doing my RL job and something goes wrong with it, i have to listen to my costumers say they are disapointed, or worst, refuse to pay me. But i guess you will figure that out when you finish high school.
If your not supposed to do anything except "PLAY" the game then what does you crybaby whining about the problems accomplish? Oh it's your own selfish gratification that you complained, jeez why didn't I see that in the first place.
PS: With the way you spell I don't doubt that alot goes wrong while your at your RL job, where you probably log into eve and get paid to play, which is btw steeling from your employer!

I will take the rushed method. I normally don't do this but last night I was stupid enough to set a skill that finishes right after dt and now I had to call the boss and tell him I'm having car probs so I can get the skill switched before going to work.

I think CCP would lose money implementing a skill queue which is why they might be hesitant to implement it. People queuing 2 x 30 day skills and leaving the char inactive till they complete for example.

Thats a good point, though could it be fixed by training not happening if your account isnt active? I understand that is already the case on the Chinese server, so clearly cant be too hard to implement here. I would happily accept that if a skill queue was in place.

No, as a customer you have the right to stop being one at any time of your choice due to any reason you wish.
By that means, you do not have to put up with start up issues, or any other issues you feel as unfair service for something you pay for.

@ skill training stopping.. wrong.. it does go on atm.. they said they removed that on the chinese servers is because there they can pay for shorter intervals (pay-per-minute? or something).. it should be somewhere in the coldfront q&a thingies.

Secondly playing while at work does not mean you're stealing from your employer. I play at work every single night. I have one of those oh so important jobs where I cover the night shift and do close to, well pretty much nothing. So in order to pass the time I play Eve. My playing Eve at work in no way shape or form causes my job performance to fall. Hell if anything it IMPROVES my work performance cause its either play Eve or fall asleep from the utter lack of things to do.
But I suppose you're just one of those jealous types who doesn't get paid good money to play Eve at work. I'm sorry your life sucks but please don't take it out on the rest of us because really you have no idea what you're talking about.
As for the servers I'd rather they start them up correctly instead of rushing into it and have to take them back down in a few hours like a couple days ago.

I dont think id like my training to stop when my character is inactive, sometimes i leave them inactive when i have a 15 day skill going, but i usually always activate them at some point in the month - a skill queue would probably stop that.
CCP will have worked this out and realise its not really broken, and fixing it the way your suggesting will have a negative impact on their turnover - i dont blame them, its just good business sense.

a 2 skill queue would do the job. first skill: short time, second skill: long time.
so the short finishes and i wouldnt lose skilltime due to downtimes.
or maybe let a random skill start if skill training ends in a downtime

How many other MMOs can host 34k players in the same world?
And yes, SiSi is usually online during TQ downtimes. It does have its own daily downtime at 13, 14 or 15 GMT though (I don't remember when).

TBH is they did implement that your skills dont train while your account is not active, i would probably never return to EVE.. as sometimes I get really bored playing and its good to have a little break, set a long skill to train, possibly wait a week or 2 after my subscription ended, then re-subscribe, knowing that on my return I have a nice skill trained an a few more SP under my belt, which all in all makes me feel better upon my return and makes me want to stay..
(P.S. Sorry for the messy writing lol, i jus took some medication, feeling abit woozy)

Ive read somewhere that they plan to introduce the ability to train 2 skills, but they both train at half the speed they would normally.

Probably the same words re-invented every time a server doesn't work. This isn't a problem unique to EVE, murphy's law governs all of IT. I remember many an all-nighter fixing a production server which had a hickup and wound up taking down the entire system with it...

ok, so why is the server down 1 hour every day(althoug some ppl are hinting that the server usually is down more than 1 hour?)
Is it because everyon is playing on the same server? isnt there another way to solve this? And 1 hour a day is aprox 30 hours a month, that's more than 1 day loss of playtime:p

and yet again i loose skilltime.... not because it completed in dt, but because it had a margin of 2h 7m past that... i really dont know what to plan in margins anymore when it comes to skillcompletion... even in normal gameplay i lost skilltime due to reboots that would take 20m but actually took 2hours....

I normally never say anything on this "downtime" subject, but honestly, it is VERY difficult to defend what is happening here and dismiss "skill time wasted" by ending skills and not being able to continue training so easily when the main part of the game is based on YOUR skill set and that skill set is tied DIRECTLY to TIME involved.
Eh, just add this to the:
You know your addicted to EVE when...
... your sleep, work and family time is put on hold while you wait for servers to come up so skill training can continue.

No, all is well. This is the game EVE, it's call guess the time when the server is up.
There is another rarer part of EVE that has some kind of space game where everything works fine, but thankfully those times are not often seen.

I noticed something after I had been staring blankly at the login screen for two hours.. something strange and new. There is apparently a rather bright light source suspended at some distance above and beyond my current environment. Furthermore, I have seen at least two bilateral biped hominid organisms in this extended environment.... I am going to investigate. Wish me luck!

TBH After a long break from EVE and general coupling out of hardcore mode playing GAMES I feel like pointing out to all complaining about lost skill time that for a game you are enthusiastic enough about to worry about couple of lost hours in skill training that you might be set for a long time playing so in retrospective after a year or 2, I promise you 2 hours of lost training is nothing to sweat over or become irritated of.
Ok assume it happens 5 time in a month that a skill is supposed to finish right after downtime and it's extended, 10 hours a month is 1,4% time lost of training. With assumption of 1 skillpoint each 3 seconds average it's a whooping total of 12000 skillpoints, that's not gonna affect your <high rank skill> lvl 5 that much.

for all of you whineing chumps out there here somethink to think about.
On avarage the server comes up early by 20mins at least 3 times a week
3x52/60=52hours a year now if they have more than 76hours of downtime not linked to a daily downtime (1 hour) or a server patch which goes over scedule, Then and only then should you complain. and since i can't think of it happening that often pls Shut the hell up!!!!

Yeh, you must be right. I am sure CCP would detest having a chunk of their subscribers paying money, but not logging in to use server resources

I can't help thinking that this is somehow my fault. Y'see I have a massive piece of coursework that I have to finish by 16:30, and I keep taking short breaks to check on the status of the server, only to find that it's always down.
Is this some form of deity making it so I'm not distracted by loading up EVE? If it comes up at 16:30 then you know why.

ok, it wasn't just me involved in making it work. it 3-4 of us all working together. i'm just the face you see because i'm not as ulgy as the others.
basically we put out a fix for the market problems, which worked perfectly on sisi but for some reason stopped the market even starting on TQ. this issue is being looked into right now. after trying to start the server a few times, we decided to role the fix back and run with the older code.
while trying to start up the server with the old code, 1 of the servers kept dying, but having over 100 servers, it's hard to find out which 1. once we found out the problem server, it was removed from the cluster and the cluster started up 1st time.
now there is still an issue with the market leaking memory serverside. this is currently our top focus, but as a temporary fix we have changed the market to use 30 nodes instead of only 4. this basically means we have 72gig of ram instead of 8gig. so there is now plently of memory for the market to eat, but this does not mean the problem is being ignored.
i would like to say sry bout all of this and thx for the support, it does help us tbh. even if it is only words

Nonsense. Don't allow people to queue more than one skill. If that turns out to be months, it's because they have only very long skills to train and so what?
Personally, I'd love to be able to have something queued up for 4-8 hours after something ends in the middle of the night so I don't have to change skills and then change back after work to finish or chip away at the remaining time on the first skill.

just to follow this up. we have a possible fix for the market issues on TQ running on sisi over night. if you can please log in and test the basic market functions.
if i see nothing wrong with the market node in the morning and there are no errors in the logs, then the fix will be on TQ at downtime tomorrow.

Thanks for an open explaination for the extended downtime. There are few companies that would be so open and honest. Good luck hunting that bug, and thanks for finding a work around.
Edit - When I get home from work I will see what I can do for you with testing.

I appreciate the information that's come out with this problem. Normally CCP keeps us in the dark, and although I missed a night's gaming (being an aussie and not having that many nights to play), I don't mind as much knowing WHY.
Being a programmer of complex apps myself, I know that things can work GREAT on the test machine and fail in a big fat heap on production. This is using identical hardware, I can't even imagine the issues deploying to a cluster.
