ummm...yeah...it's pretty important that CCP does the right thing as often as possible for this game to work in their capacity as impartial gamesmasters
If it takes threats and bullying to do that, then it's an unfortunate but necessary state of affairs. That said, CCP acted with full integrity in this instance. Most understand that if an account was hacked and billions stolen a great many items can be purchased very quickly, which in the event of them needing to be returned would be a logistical nightmare for those involved - not to mention the difficulties in explaining to sellers the reason why a transaction has been reversed and recovering the ISK (they themselves may have spent the ISK already)
CCP has listened and acted in recent months. They state categorically if something is an exploit - examples being a firm decision made over POS bowling, stating via the news that neutral remote repping of POSs is an exploit immediately after revelations 2 patch when the problem was first discovered. This kind of behaviour is what people have been asking for and it's good work on CCP for listening and looking at ways to fix things to the benefit of everybody. It's a long road, but CCP are clearly trying their best and I think a great many players actually appreciate them for doing it and trust is beginning to rise once more. I don't see why you're so bitter about it, you seem to be a bit of a clunk to me.
Captain Thunk
So, everybody that gets petitioned gets instabanned till the full investigation is over?
Seems to me with THIS policy Goonswarm could all KINDS of havoc... Thatd be even worse than the thread thingy they did
For something on this scale yes, what choice is there when you consider the logistal nightmare of returning bought items to what could mount up to thousands of players. It would take a very long time to reverse these transactions and could have further complications in that the sellers could have already spent their ISK - a reversed transaction would then put them in the negative - is that fair to a player who just had items on the market? just another victim of the hacker? I don't think so. What's your solution exactly? shrug and move on perhaps?
It's not pleasant, but for something of this scale it has to be done and CCP made an investigation very quickly. As for abuse of the system, well it has to be high scale and mass petitioning would of course give the game away and would probably get the people trying it on in trouble, so it doesn't seem to be as great a problem as you make out.

*snicker snicker* seriously... I've seen us lose more then this in a single fleet battle, in which I died of 'course dictors being primary :(. I have also seen enemies (specifically the northern allied fleet in F-T *cough*). The BPO set (inless researched) is nothing more then a small annoyance, and I'm assuming its a T1 bpo set. AND last but not least to say... Someone commented on EVOL being a communist corporation, which it is. I would like to point out the following facts. EVOL has 449 members (as of post). Say half are alts, thats still around 224 members. Market cost of what was stolen as per that list 100b (and I'm being generous). Someone tell me about how much ISK then each person needs to make to recoup that loss?
Yea, thats right, they would make nearly double that if they sent half their members to the belts to kill 1 battleship spawn...
Mmm math, gotta love it.
P.S. I think corp thievery is underhanded, peroid. Use of spy's is fine (off-lining POSs, aggro'ing titans, ect) but straight out stealing is bad!
Sorry, you've lost me...
100b between 200 players = half a bil each.
You make half a bil from a BS spawn?

I'd love to hear the reason why he did this. Was it:
A: Long term plan from the start
B: Someone really really annoyed him
C: He just woke up crazy one day and though..."why not"
Oh and to ProphetGuru, since you say you thought of him as a friend, I will offer you a little bit of sympathy. As having your friendship betrayed like that surely hurts far more than the loss of the isk.

Obviously if BoB had the logistical prowess that they claim then this wouldn't have happened. Corp Theft is a fair tactic used in EVE online to remove power from the hands of your enemy, and little light-hearted fairies dont like that because they're too soft to keep a grip on the corp.

The dreadnaughts have already been replaced and we are now a stronger alliance than ever! RA has achieved nothing today!
What? Because we lost the baby titan means we're dead or something? That just shows what a strong alliance we are that we can easily take such a loss!

But i also dont see what this has to do with beeing a game or not, someone you thought is a friend backstabbed you. If he does it in Eve or when you play poker or steals it directly from you makes now difference for me, its simply lame.
Is it lame when BoB does it to other Alliances? Weird I don't see you saying how lame it was for BoB to use their alts in other Alliance to cause losses of 10's of Billions of isk. Please point me to those posts if I missed them

1 BS spawn = 10m ISK w/salvage & loot generally (thats a triple spawn of 1.5+)
So, they would have to each kill 50-60 spawns...

10m with loot and slavage? Try 2 unless you have T2 BS spawns... and 2 is generously assuming you've found a good one.
Try 10-20m/hr. Which makes it more like 250 spawns and 25+ hrs ea.

I always think that corp thefts are horrible and cringe whenever I heard about them. However, in this situation I recall the POS bowling, the smack talk and the ninja-titan aggro and I find myself thinking no one else could have deserved this more.
Sadly though, I am pretty sure Evolution will bounce back from this. They have many renters lining their pockets. It must suck though that this is happening so close to their annual bbq. -------------------

My RL sympathies go to the RL folks behind the characters that make up Evolution - your trust has been breached, and that can be a shocking / somewhat traumatic experience.
As to the characters and the in game Corp / alliance... I maintain political neutrality, so all I can say is that this was well performed, and I am interested to see if this makes any waves... however much bravado it may seem being displayed by comments of it is already replaced, I tend to find them accurate - I really think this will be a ripple in the ocean...

Zeros, might I suggest brushing up on your math?
224 x 1,500,000 != < 100,000,000,000
Unless Evol has belts that spawn 10mil ISK bounty NPCs, they'd need to kill more than 1 each.
But yes, a large corp/alliance that has every member do an hour of solid isk-making for the corp, will get billions of isk easily. Doing it daily will give the corp more ISK than it knows what to do with.

Edited by: Cadiz on 18/07/2007 19:15:19 CCP temporarily locking accounts involved in corp theft is hardly unheard of; it happened in NoQ when one of our directors had his account hacked and tried to run off with the corp wallet. The account got temp-banned by the GMs (and wasn't unlocked for a month after the fact much to the chagrin of the legitimate owner, but that's another story) as the situation was investigated.
So CCP is not doing some strange and new thing here just because it is BoB, for those who seem to be implying such. ------ Director, No Quarter "There is no problem that cannot be solved by the judicious application of violence." |
