Well... you may have reopened the market forum, but the sell, buy and trade forums are still closed for action.
I still want those reopened until the contracts can fully replace the forums! --- Compare items ? Image 1 - Image 2 Thanks to Daetusk. |

CCP, thank you so much!
You've just gone up a whole load in my good books :)

My city hired a new "traffic consultant" who promptly spent quite a bit turning a roundabout into a traffic light junction.. in the past month there have been more accidents there than there has been in the past 20 years, and traffic now backs up for nearly half a mile ;P....
It does happen.. I am sure ccp had their reasons for wanting this but there was no way contracts were mature enough to take this stuff.. When contracts are much better & much more mature then people will naturally quit using forums anyhow.
Oh, and city planners have decided to turn off the traffic lights and replace the junction with a roundabout next year.

Jesus, you can't even apologise right.
Just admit you made a mistake, keep the forum forever.
Unless the 'improvements' are coming "SoonÖ" expect another thread like this when they actually do close.

I for one am happy to use the contract system in game (if/when it works), I do appreciate the argument of people who buy/sell whilst at work etc and I am sorry that those people will ultimately lose out if/when you finally close down the buy/sell forum.
I suspect Wrangler felt a little bit like the person who knocked the first domino over ... then sat back and went "oopppss ... whhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

Good to hear the forum won't be closed, but I do have a few questions regarding how or why this announcement was made;
Originally by: CCP Kieron This announcement and the removal of the ability to create new posts in the Market channels were both premature.
How exactly can the announcement be premature? CCP Wrangler stated the following:
Originally by: CCP Wrangler With the contract system and market in game we have decided to close down the trading forums.
The only way you can call it premature would be if the contract system would receive a massive overhaul within a short period of time. Is this the case? If this isn't the case wouldn't it be a better choice of words saying CCP made a big boo boo?
Originally by: CCP Kieron While the Market forums will eventually be closed, this action will not be taken until the in-game market and contract systems have been made more robust and useful.
Euhm? One of the advantages of using a forum is that it's out of game. Unless you make the contract system in such a way that it follows the following guidelines you SHOULD NOT remove the trade forums;
-Being able of doing bids out of game and in game from all over the universe, so you can check prices and bid while at work without an Eve client or while camping your favorite .0 system.
-Being able of selling everything from all goods (including officer loot, mother ships etc.), services, forum signatures, killboards to IGB ****.
-Being able of searching through all past auctions so you have a good price indication of what something is worth.
-Have a decent bidding mechanism, allow to see the exact time an auction ends, allow bidding while the server is down, allow the seller to adjust end time incase a server screw up, allow you to set a proper bid increase and allow you to set a proper sniper rule.
-Being able of getting references for items/services requiring trust (eg. someone making sigs can have people posting in his auction to show that the seller delivers good sigs).
All these changes would just make the ingame contracting system exactly the same as the current sell order forum currently is, requiring just as much moderation as the current board.
Now onto the following questions if there is any connection with ISD's removal.
Currently the sales forum is the biggest forum in terms of posts on these boards, hence the suspicion is rather easily raised that the removal of CCP's cheap labor (namely ISD which is guided by a few CCP employees instead of having a fulltime mod squad on the pay roll) had anything to do with the announcement of the removal of the most used forum. Is this correct? If not, don't you agree it was a horrid timing of both posts?
Also in CCP Kieron's blog about the removal of ISD he amongst other stated the following;
Originally by: CCP Kieron We hope that the EVE community will understand and support us through these changes, recognizing the overall goal is to support our players in the best manner possible.
That was posted like 8 hours after the announcement of the sales forum being removed. So you were aware that the forum would be removed. How come you could call this supporting our players in the best manner possible?
Also if this blog was premature, as in posted to soon (which is the definition of premature) how come it took more then 12 hours to figure it out?

I think you guys don't follow why people use the buy and sell forums. And I'm not gonna bother to say why because you wont listen just the same... as you have not listened so far.

Can't see why need to close the market forums and what the benefit is, It's quite obvious if there closed people will simply move onto another forum to do there trading.

Well done, thank you for listening.
Personally I'll be happy for the forums to be closed as soon as they're completely unnecessary and in no way better than in-game alternatives, although I do feel for those who arrange trades outside of the game, for example at work. Hopefully something can be done for them as well.

No matter what you do to the contracts system, they will NEVER be as good or as useful as a forum. This is simply down to the fact a forum is an open-ended area for discussion, and contracts requires you to fill in a certain set of variables. These variables can never be as flexible as a block of text. For this reason alone, the contracts system can never be allowed to sit independently, instead, it should be further adapted to complement the forums, rather than to be furhter removed from them.

I can't understand why you'd actually want to close an active and popular service, when clearly it'd upset so many people. It seems like fixing what isn't broken; shutting the single busiest (and arguably most useful) function of this website for little apparent reason seems like nothing but a backwards step for EVE.
Glad to see you're putting the plans on hold for a while though. More time to "persuade" you...cheques in the mail, guy with a cricket bat will be along shortly after? --------

why all the "brave decision, really have confidence in CCP now" ass kissing? was a blend of stupidity, rashness and mismanagement. if your government came along and introduced some sweeping law that made no sense and was extremely unpopular... then abolished it the next day, you wouldn't be going "wow, i really admire that you backed down"... you'd be worried about what the hell kind of asshats are running the show?
a bit of stability, planning and a half coherant rationale would be nice

Closing down the Market forum is the worst idea ever, amongst others you've come up recently. You are going to remove a WORKING SYSTEM and replace it with an UNTESTED SYSTEM that I assume you think is greater than the current system.
"If it ain't broke, DON'T FIX IT." - some dude
You will just create problems for yourself as many have stated and reconsider ever closing down the Market Forums for good.
"While the Market forums will eventually be closed . . ." - worst statement if the year. If you do go ahead with this horrid idea and close it down in the future, a 3rd party forum for the Market shouldn't be hard too establish. It will completely defeat YOUR PURPOSE.
THINK and LISTEN BEFORE YOU ACT!
Deimus.
P.S. I hope you return to your sanity or get help.

Edited by: Fafhred F''Leiber on 22/08/2007 12:43:14 If you want to eventually close the forum market, you must FIRST be sure that the in-game market and contracts allow EVERY possible transaction, AND that the selection 'ALL' in contracts really covers the whole universe, not just a larger area as is the case at the moment:
a) many items are NOT tradeable, and some existing items do not even have an hyperlink (I saw one of those 2 days ago, looking from the items variants from an existing item. The variant I was interested in was not featured on the market, could not be found using contracts (item not listed), an did not have an hyperlink for it).
b) goods that are illegal in any area cannot be contracted. Well, some have legitimate reasons to be traded.
c) I often found that while going to a station where a contact is pending, that contract appears or disappears from the list using ALL, depending where I was. This was discussed in the CAS channel last week, with example of an item for which a variable number of offers was seen below a certain price, depending where the corp member was. Currently, 'ALL' is a misnomer.
Until ALL this works in-game, suppressing the forum market will be a major*****-up.
Well, I see this being censored, but the expression I used should not have been, although I can see while the character string could have been, taken out of context.

WTS 30k torches and pitchforks, 1 tanker full of tar and 100k lbs of feathers
Guess we won't be needing them after all
In all honesty the announced closure would have had little effect on me as I am not a hardcore trader. That aside what really got to me about the whole thing was the sheer lack of warning and/or consultation to the community you hold so dear. Thank the gods you were able to see the error of yer ways before it was too late.
With that I say nice job dodging the bullet on this one, had you stayed the course our faith in you woulda taken a wicked shot to the heart.

Eventually all empires come to and end because they lack political and social sensibility. You can see this happening in real life right now. If at least you had half a braincell of the political and social sensibility needed to explain us players, why you want to close the trade forums.
At times -all times- I view you so arrogant, as if no other space fantasy game will ever be able to compare and surpass EVE.
Games are made up of programs and nice graphics, but they last only while WE players feel WE are well treated.
So, you want to reflect 100 thousand players online at all times instead of 29 thousand players?
As anyone can tell by the player status graphic in EVE, the 30 thousand mark doesn't last long, because WE have severe lag problems when that mark is attained and then most of US players just take off to some other game in the net. This marketing through the contracts will make it unbearable to play.
